World’s Tallest Hotel Tower In Dubai To Smash World Records

Yahya Jan’s creations are probably what you notice if you gaze out at the Dubai skyline. He holds the positions of president and design director for the architecture and engineering firm NORR, which is responsible for some of the most recognizable structures in the city, such as the Atlantis and Shangri-La Hotels. He is now engaged in one of his most significant projects. The Ciel Tower, which will be finished in 2023 and stand at a height of over 1,200 feet (365 metres), will include more than 1,000 rooms and suites spread out over 82 levels.

The passion behind the success

For the project, Jan was entrusted with creating the skyscraper’s design on a triangular parcel of land in Dubai Marina that had a limited — for a structure that height — space of just 2,500 square meters. It’s a really compacted characteristic, he remarked. “Similar to what you could encounter in Manhattan or London. We had to find a way to overcome the severe limitations.” Heart of Europe, Dubai’s ambitious megaproject, is about to complete its first phase. According to the developer, The First Group, a glass observation deck would provide 360-degree views of the city, the coastline, and famous sites like the man-made Palm Jumeirah Island.

Check out this video:

Where architecture and engineering meet

The project is not only visually pleasing but also energy-efficient, Jan noted, utilizing 25% less electricity for air conditioning than is normal for buildings of comparable size. “It’s not only about architecture in this endeavor. The integration of engineering and architecture is the focus”, he added. “I adore the project so much because of this. The marriage of science and art is one of my greatest passions.”

Jan’s unplanned legacy

Jan never imagined he would leave such a legacy in Dubai, creating some of the most recognizable malls, business buildings, and residential towers when he first came to the city in 1996. He was born and raised in Karachi, Pakistan, and at age 18, he traveled to the US on a scholarship. He received a Master’s in architecture from Princeton after studying structural engineering there. After that, Jan spent nine years working in the US and had no plans to return until he was given the opportunity to work as a senior designer on the Emirates Towers office and hotel complex.

He said that he had never intended to stay in the UAE for as long as he has, at 57. “25 years in Dubai have been incredible,” he stated. “The enthusiasm here got the better of me.”

Jan believes that the Ciel Tower, which takes its name from the French meaning sky, will be regarded as timeless like the Empire State Building or the Chrysler Building in New York City.

“The reason I prefer the name Ciel is because I feel the sky is the limit in our own lives, and that’s definitely the case in my own life,” he remarked. “I’ve got the opportunity to develop and achieve things that I never thought I’d have the chance to do”.

Reasons Why Being Multilingual Is Just Awesome

Reasons Why Being Multilingual Is Just Awesome

Approximately one in five American children over the age of five speak both English and another language at home, according to the American Community Survey, a component of the US Census. These bilingual/multilingual youngsters include hearing children of Deaf individuals! How does their social, emotional, and psychological development change in a bilingual environment? Here are 6 compelling arguments for why being bilingual rocks!

  1. Enhanced communication skills

Youngsters who speak many languages are exposed to a wider variety of social experiences than monolingual children. As a result, multilingual kids frequently learn how to take into account other people’s viewpoints, which helps them communicate more effectively. One of the most important communication skills is the capacity to take into account other points of view, which may be useful in both personal and professional contexts. Studies suggest multilingual exposure boosts children’s communication skills by NPR, explains more about the connection between language and communication.

  1. Executive functioning

Cognitive talents known as executive functioning skills include problem-solving, planning, and reasoning. According to studies, multilingual kids frequently have stronger executive functioning abilities than their monolingual peers, especially in the areas of inhibition and monitoring.

  1. Comfortable with their surroundings

Being multilingual has several benefits, one of which is the capacity to constantly observe the surroundings. Spanish scholar Albert Costa from the University of Pompeu Fabra claimed, Bilinguals frequently jump between languages; for example, you might need to speak to your mother in one language and your father in another.

  1. More career opportunities

Reasons Why Being Multilingual Is Just Awesome

A multilingual candidate may have a distinct edge over a monolingual applicant in the job market due to their ability to communicate in many languages. The capacity to communicate in many languages is seen by the global business sector as an “indispensable instrument for relationship development and financial success.” Finding employment may become simpler as a result, and salaries may rise as well. “Those entering the workforce in 2014 with second language competence may expect an additional 10 to 15 percent wage rise,” says Ryan McMunn, a language specialist and CEO of BRIC Language Systems.

  1. Delay the onset of Alzheimer /Dementia

According to research from the Institute of Medical Sciences in Hyderabad, India, those who speak a second language experience a 4.5-year delay at the beginning of Alzheimer’s disease. This is because utilizing many languages requires ongoing mental control, which keeps the brain active and prevents cognitive decline.

  1. Increased ability to multitask

Due to their capacity to transition between languages, multi-linguals have proven to be stronger multitaskers. When a bilingual person routinely speaks two languages, the control network must be used, according to researchers quoted in a US News story, “to prevent interference from the other language and to maintain the dominance of the desired language.”

Being multilingual has several social and cognitive benefits, many of which are derived from early and ongoing language exposure. Don’t panic if you haven’t started learning a second language yet. It’s never too late to learn, says Dr. Ellen Bialystok of York University in Toronto, Canada. Consider teaching a new sign language to your family and studying it together if you currently speak two or more languages at home.

How To Use Dry Shampoo The Correct Way

How many of us have stepped out of the house with flat/greasy hair? Probably none of us. The idea of stepping out of the house without washing your hair is no more horrific – thanks to dry shampoo. This miracle product is the answer to all our greasy hair problems.

Dry shampoo is great for busy women, or for women who want an efficient clean feeling as well as for women who don’t want or need to wash their hair too often. Dry shampoo is great to keep color-treated hair vibrant, and can even help after a sweat session to minimize odor. It works by helping to grab excess oil and then disperse it.

If dry shampoo is your best friend then here are the do’s and don’ts you need to keep in your mind.

Do Focus On The Roots

With dry shampoo, sectioning your hair is the key to getting a proper application. Meanwhile, focusing on your roots is the way to clean your hair since the oil is produced on the scalp. Make sure to direct the product towards the scalp rather than the tips of the root since they are already dry.

Don’t Go Overboard

Since dry shampoo can suck oil and moisture, it can also lead to dryness of the hair shaft. Spraying more than what is needed can make your hair dry and prone to breakage.

Do Massage It In

Dry shampoo tends to sit on the hair so in order to make it work efficiently massaging it into the scalp is key. The clean look can only be achieved if the dry shampoo has absorbed and soaked all the oil and grease.

Don’t Spray Too Close

A maximum of six to ten inches gap must be maintained between the spray and scalp. If you spray too closely it can lead to product buildup and a white residue making it hard to blend.

Do Brush Your Hair

Evenly spread out the dry shampoo by brushing your hair generously to distribute the product through your hair and give them the life they deserve.

Don’t Touch Your Hair

Don’t forget to give your hair time after applying the shampoo. Wait for the dust to settle, so to speak, then blend.

Modernising Agriculture

Fatima Fertilizer’s Sarsabz Pakistan mobile app has marked a record number of over a hundred thousand downloads in its first ten months, making it the country’s fastest-growing mobile app within the agriculture sector. The mobile app – launched last year in the month of November – reflects on Fatima Fertilizer’s commitment to promoting agri-technology, in addition to their pledge to reach out to farmers and offer them relevant and useful information to empower them on making more informed decisions about their land and crops.

According to Rabel Sadozai, Director Marketing and Sales, Fatima Fertilizer, the success of Sarsabz Pakistan app indicates a dire demand for Pakistani farmers to modernize their farming practices through the use of technology and achieve maximum growth and efficiency.

“This app serves as a convincing prologue to the fact that digital transformation of Pakistan’s agriculture sector is the only way to realize its utmost potential so that it can play a pivotal role in reviving our over-stressed economy,” she says.

Despite the fact that Pakistan’s agri-sector moves nearly 20% of the country’s economy through crop production and related jobs, Sadozai believes, we are far from exploring the sector’s full potential to achieve self-sufficiency, and although our population might not see any drastic reduction anytime soon in our agricultural output, it is imperative that the country starts enhancing its food production by adopting modern practices at par with world practices and standards.

“It was with this very vision in mind that we introduced Sarsabz Pakistan app to harness the country’s immense agri-potential and transition from age-old farming practices towards precision-based farming methods, led by scientific knowledge and technology,” she says.

The Sarsabz Pakistan app features crop planning and management support to help manage multiple farms and crops in a given season by providing step-by-step alerts. It also has a fertilizer calculator that provides precise application of fertilizer according to the land and crop type, in line with the 4R rule (right source, right rate, right time, and right place). According to the company, the app is a one-stop solution for farmers to conveniently access information related to farming including video tutorials and guides, as well as customized assistance on best farm management practices.

Moreover, the app also updates farmers with crucial weather forecasts for timely planning and application of farm inputs, accessibility to fertilizer at company rates through a comprehensive list of nationwide Sarsabz dealers (along with their contact and location details), updates on current commodity market rates and latest news related to the agriculture sector.

The app’s content and information are consistently updated on its administrative dashboard, which is maintained by Fatima Fertilizer’s technical app development team.

Fatima Fertilizer also maintains a fleet of 75+ technical service officers (TSOs) working across the country at the territory level to engage with farmers on a daily basis. These officers are responsible for providing farm advisory services and support to farmers, as well as guiding them on using the Sarsabz Pakistan app to harness the potential benefits of its technical features to increase crop yield and productivity.

“During the initial launch period of this app, we also conducted a pilot trial with 300 farmers across the country who were able to use this app successfully and shared their positive feedback with the TSOs. Based on this successful trial, the app was launched online for all farmers with ongoing advisory and support from the TSOs,” adds Sadozai.

Moreover, since the brand key is farm focused, the TSOs not only train the farmers on using the app but also conduct sessions on the importance of using the app and learning through it. They hold small farmer meetings to larger seminars to build farmer confidence and train them, according to global standards.

“Fatima Fertilizer is the only company providing free-of-cost soil and water testing facilities to farmers in Pakistan, whereby they can request the company’s qualified agronomists through the app to visit their land site and collect water and soil samples for testing purposes. The test results are also shared with them through the app, which not only saves the farmers the entire hassle of visiting labs with the samples but also precious time which can be spent on tending to the crops,” says Sadozai.

The Sarsabz Pakistan mobile app is available to download on Google Play Store. The company is making consistent efforts to spread awareness about the app on digital media. A tutorial/hand-holding video on social media platforms was published, shortly after the launch of the app to educate farmers about its features, efficacy, and potential benefits. The app communicates with its users in Urdu language so the farming community can easily understand the advisory updates.

Going forward, the company plans to further enhance the app by allowing farmers to avail quick micro loans and lease farm machinery on easy terms so that farmers can procure and manage essential farm inputs in a timely and convenient manner.

Jazz partners with NFRCC to develop Seed Distribution App for farmers affected by floods

Jazz, Pakistan’s leading digital operator and the largest internet and broadband service provider, collaborated with National Flood Relief Coordination Centre (NFRCC), to develop an App for Seed Distribution for the farmers affected by floods, as part of its commitment to provide technological support to the government for flood response and relief.

The app is being launched in time for the Rabi season for wheat plantation.

Key features of this app include farmer registration, claim submission, stock maintenance, claim verification and seed distribution.

Its adoption will enable distribution of seeds to farmers in an efficient, quick transparent manner.

Additionally, the industry has assisted its teams with SMS integration, framework for SMS rates and shortcodes, which is led by the Ministry of National Food Security & Research.

Whilst speaking about the initiative, Ahsan Iqbal, Chairperson National Flood Response Coordination Centre (NFRCC)  stated, “Farmers are scrambling to salvage whatever they can right now, with increasing debts and decreasing yields. With nearly 15% of Pakistan’s rice crop lost, 40% of cotton crop drowned and 4 million acres of crop land washed away, it is imperative for industry to step up and come forward for such tech-based partnerships. It is heartening to see Jazz come onboard and collaborate on this initiative with the government”.

Aamir Ibrahim,  Chief Executive Officer, Jazz said, “Provision of IT & telecom services remains the central tenet of our response to the recent floods, given the fact that connectivity is an essential during any crisis. As part of that support, our recent partnership with NFRCC, for the App is key in highlighting how digital solutions can help assist in any disaster response.”

TikTok, Zindagi Trust hold Digital Safety workshops at government schools

TikTok and Zindagi Trust continued their commitment to creating digital safety awareness in Pakistan with another round of workshops in government schools. Announced earlier this year, this partnership has seen Zindagi Trust conduct over 20 workshops so far in their adopted government schools, impacting nearly 1800 students, teachers, and parents who have learnt about critical aspects of online safety and how they can become responsible digital citizens.

The latest workshops were conducted in Karachi at the SMB Fatima Jinnah Government School and the Khatoon-e-Pakistan Government School, with the aim of disseminating information on how to navigate the digital world securely. Prior to the workshops, surveys were conducted by Zindagi Trust to gauge the level of understanding people have of the internet and its usage and the results were used to prepare contents for the sessions.

Close to 1000 students, aged 13+, attended the workshops, along with 200 teachers and more than 600 parents, to discuss and learn about best practices of internet usage and how they can become responsible digital citizens, to cultivate a safe online community across the nation. The workshops covered a range of topics including; safety features available on TikTok for parents and students, harmful behaviors prevalent on social media, ways to share appropriate information, identifying fake news and misinformation, and reporting mechanisms to report illicit and harmful content.

These workshops also provided an extensive guide on how to be a responsible digital citizen keeping in mind the diverse facets of the digital realm. Awareness regarding countering problems such as falling prey to fake news, cyber harassment, scamming etcetera was shared. Furthermore, the attendees were debriefed on different protection and correction mechanisms, local cyber laws and reporting platforms.

A grade 7 student from SMB Fatima Jinnah quoted: “These sessions taught me about safety features available on TikTok and ways to identify scamming, cyber-bullying and cyber-harassment. It has also helped me navigate social media platforms more safely.”

Mr. Adnan, a parent who attended the workshop remarked: “This initiative is unlike any other, I believed I had a comprehensive knowledge about most things digital but I’m walking out having learned so much more.” Another parent stated: “Being here made me realize how important it is to have a progressive dialogue with our children rather than restricting them from digital access, awareness for parents about such topics will definitively help bridge the generational disconnect present.”

Another essential component of the workshops was constructing and strengthening trusting relationships between students, their parents and all school teachers, so students have trusted adults to turn to at schools and at home, in case they find themselves in any sort of cyber trouble.

In order to maximise knowledge retention about this subject, a digital safety module has been included in Life Skills Based Education curriculum in the schools adopted by Zindagi Trust and efforts are underway to promote this intervention across more government schools in Pakistan. Meanwhile, Zindagi Trust is also using its official TikTok account to publish informative videos and create public awareness about online safety.

Changes Elon Musk Has Made Ever Since He Took Over Twitter

Elon Musk

Elon Musk changed Twitter’s site less than a day after completing his $44 billion acquisition of the company. Employees with knowledge of the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity because their statements were made without the company’s consent said that he asked that the Explore page, which displays current tweets and news items, be diverted for logged-out users accessing Twitter.com. When logged out, the Twitter homepage used to display just a sign-up form, which encouraged users to create accounts in order to access tweets.

Although Musk didn’t specifically state why the modification was made, the message was apparent to the staff members who saw it: no more holy cows. Such a choice would have been debated over for weeks inside the old Twitter. But this was Twitter as it was then. That’s absolutely one way to show that you’re in control now, a former CEO told me.

Mass Layoffs

With less than three days under his belt as “Chief Twit,” Musk has already begun to quickly transform the firm from the inside out, as seen by his alteration of Twitter’s site. He has accelerated improvements to Twitter itself, even as he plans to fire a sizable percentage of his staff in the coming days.

Currently, staff members worry that layoffs will start before November 1st when a sizable portion of them is scheduled to get stock awards paid out in cash at $54.20 per share. Musk tweeted “This is incorrect” in response to a tweet referencing another article that claimed the layoffs will occur before that date shortly after this one was published.

Introduction to subscriptions

In a hurried upgrade to Twitter’s mobile app, Twitter also mandated that its premium subscription feature, Super Follows, be changed to “Subscriptions.” He has also talked of bringing Twitter to nations where it is now difficult to access utilizing Starlink, his satellite-based internet service at SpaceX.

Choosing who to keep in Twitter’s engineering team has been Musk’s first item of business. On Friday, Musk and Tesla engineers requested that engineers print out their most recent code contributions from the last 30 to 60 days and bring them in for assessment. Then, as promptly reported by Casey Newton of Platformer, they were instructed to destroy their printouts and instead display the code on their laptops.

Elon Musk

In anticipation of Musk and the Tesla employees stopping by the company’s New York City headquarters on Monday to begin code reviews, some engineers have been obsessively following a Twitter account that records the whereabouts of Musk’s private plane.

Managers have been informed that Musk wants to filter out engineering managers who don’t frequently write code by using performance reviews to determine who can work as quickly and efficiently as he requires. “Software managers who can’t develop excellent code are equivalent to cavalry captains who can’t ride!” in May, he tweeted.

Meet This E-Rickshaw Powered By Audi E-Tron Batteries

Yes, the batteries powering this rickshaw are actual Audi e-tron batteries. Yes, you are quite unlikely to ever drive one.

Since this is a rickshaw and Audi isn’t really a player in that market, it isn’t officially an Audi. However, the four rings have played a significant role. Batteries aside, Audi finances Nunam, a non-profit organization that is delivering e-rickshaws to India, and the Neckarsulm team contributed to the development of the e-ricks. As a side note, daycare drop-off would be so much more interesting if Audi could make these, label them “e-ricks,” and put us on the list for them.

Nunam contends that beyond their “useful life” in an electric automobile, EV batteries have much more to offer. And we wholeheartedly concur. However, while we’re considering home power storage or living off the grid, the somewhat more charitable types at Nunam are considering that whole ‘helping others’ thing, providing people with access to renewable power by reusing batteries… which just so happens to minimize contamination and waste at the same time.

The strategy is very simple: when prototyping is complete, old batteries from Audi’s e-tron test vehicles will be removed, repackaged, and utilized for stationary batteries as well as in a fleet of Bangalore rickshaws. The large permanent batteries are charged by solar cells, and the batteries subsequently power the rickshaws day or night. And if you’ve ever lived in a region with that kind of latitude — such as southern India, the Philippines, Vietnam, the Caribbean, etc. — you’ll know that solar electricity isn’t exactly in short supply.

The manufacturer adds that the battery’s life cycle in an electric automobile has ended, but it hasn’t yet reached the end of its life cycle in an e-rickshaw. It is still possible to utilize it to run stationary devices like LED lights.

Now for the less apparent but far more Top Gear question: can they perform the wheelies if they have e-tron power and rickshaw weight? The e-ricks will feature modest electric engines since they “don’t need to be very strong, as rickshaw drivers in India go neither quickly nor far,” according to reality, which is typically a general fun-sponge. They’ll go on to warn us that these electric rickshaws can’t jump camels, fight off thugs, or smash through well-placed wall posters. Are they even driven by famous tennis players, or what?

Planning On Coloring Your Hair? 7 Important Tips You Need To Know

Dyeing your hair isn’t just a fashion statement it also has become a major form of self-expression. While the dream of achieving your flawless color goals is nothing short of exciting, things can be a bit tricky when dyeing your hair for the very first time. Be it ombre, balayage, highlights, lowlights, or streaks – every hair dye style requires a whole lot of maintenance and care.

If you are planning on changing the way your hair looks, here’s what you need to know.

1. Do Your Research

By reading this article, you’re already on the right track. No matter if you color at home or in the salon, it’s best not to dive right into it without any sort of prep. Finding the right tools or the right colorist for your particular head of hair is crucial. While you research, consider what kind of color change you are exactly going for. Some drastic dye jobs require a few salon visits, so keeping cost and upkeep in mind is always important before making any coloring decisions.

2. Estimate The Maintenance

Certain treatments take more maintenance and upkeep than others, so it’s important to consider that when choosing your color. According to stylists, the average time to get your roots touched up is typically four to six weeks. No matter how well you take care of your strands, fading is inevitable, and since hair grows about half an inch every month, you’ll have to get your roots redone in that time frame.

3. One Shade Down

If you are taking the plunge to dye your hair at home, it is advised to go one shade down gradually, say the experts. When you are choosing a box color, make sure you pick a shade lighter or half a shade lighter than your natural hair color. This plays it safe so you don’t end up with a color that doesn’t match your natural color.

4. Go Bold Or Go Home

If you’re looking for a low-maintenance shade, you might want to reconsider going ginger. The red color is the hardest to get, the hardest to achieve, the hardest to get rid of and also has the possibility of fading the fastest. says the experts. It’s the trickiest color that’s out there. If you want to go red, be ready to commit.

5. Consider Your Skin Tone

You may see a pic of Selena Gomez’s new highlights or Billie Eilish’s green strands and want the same, but before you run to the nearest salon or drugstore, keep in mind that certain colors will look different on different skin tones. Most colorists will do a consultation to help you decide if the color you want is realistic and if it’ll turn out how you envision it to. And if you need a visual, try doing a peek-a-boo strand, which is dyeing one lock of hair that hides under the rest of your hair, to see if you like the color.

6. Get The Right Tools

Dyeing your hair at home properly also is about selecting the right tools, so you’ll want to be extra careful in what gear you select. To get the job done correctly, Meaghan Scarlett a hair stylist recommends picking up tools like a dye brush, bowl, and latex gloves to help you out.

7. Stop The Heat

If you are about to try dyeing your hair at home, Wright recommends you stop using hot tools at least a week before giving it a go. The heat from straighteners, curling irons, and blow dryers cause brittle, dry, and damaged strands, which will not result in vibrant color.

Act Smart: How To Avoid WhatsApp Scams

One of the most widely used instant messaging apps in the world, WhatsApp has over two billion users. Given its popularity, it’s not surprising that some are attempting to use it as a means of stealing your financial and personal information. Through texts or phone conversations, scammers using the messaging app get in touch with victims while frequently posing as trustworthy organizations.

In certain cases, they’ll demand money while threatening to hurt a loved one. Because WhatsApp scams are continuously changing, some of them can be difficult to recognize. However, there are a few techniques to spot the most typical warning signs.

Types of scams

  1. Family Emergency Scams

Impersonation scams, often known as family emergency scams, occur when a con artist approaches the victim while posing as a relative. The con artist may claim that their phone broke and that they are now utilizing a replacement or a friend’s phone to persuade victims. The faker then demands money in order to cover a cost. For instance, the person can claim that their wallet was stolen and that they urgently need money.

  1. Government Impersonator scam

A scammer poses as a government employee or sends a text message that appears to be from a legitimate organization, such as the Internal Revenue Service or the Social Security Administration. Then, in order to avoid legal action, the person requests that you pay a fine or debt. They may even be aware of some details about you, such as your name or address. Keep in mind that government entities will never text, call, email, or even leave you a voicemail.

  1. Give away scam

The target receives a text message letting them know they won a contest. The next step is to reply with personal information or click a link to receive your prize.

  1. Online romance scam

Online dating services like Tinder and eHarmony are notorious for having a high rate of romance scams. However, the con artist can persuade you to switch the chat to WhatsApp once you’ve been matched with someone through these dating services.

  1. Cryptocurrency scam

Trending cryptocurrency scams involve con artists posing as financial gurus and offering unrealistic investment prospects.

  1. Kidnapping scams

In this kind of deception, con artists get in touch with you and say they have abducted a friend or relative. Then they threaten to use violence if you don’t pay the ransom.

  1. Account takeover scam

In account takeover scams, you can get a text requesting fast attention for one of your online accounts.

How to avoid these whatsapp scams

  • Any mails for money should be avoided. To evaluate the matter, get in touch with the alleged individual or organization.
  • Any alleged relatives or friends calling from unfamiliar numbers should be questioned.
  • Watch out for any grammar or spelling errors. Error-free texts come from reputable businesses or services.
  • If the writer claims to be someone you know, think about if their writing style is consistent with how they typically communicate.
  • Ask the con artist a question that only a friend or family member would know the answer to.
  • Use none of the links or contact information provided in the text. Find the company’s or organization’s official contact details online.
  • Keep in mind that government entities will never call or text you. Never provide information about your financial accounts or personal data, such as your Social Security number or birthdate.
  • Put two-factor authentication in place. By using this security step, your Whatsapp account is protected from hackers.

Scientists Now Have A Cure For Nightmares

Scientists have found a way to fend off occasional nightmares. Sound therapy can also be used to treat nightmare disorder- a condition characterized by frequent nightmares that cause distress or impair the patient’s ability to function during everyday activities such as work or social situations.

Imagery rehearsal therapy (IRT) is one commonly used treatment method for nightmare disorder.

Sound Therapy For Nightmares

The method could boost the effectiveness of an existing treatment for people with chronic nightmares, say, researchers. According to experts around 4% of the general adult population might suffer from frequent nightmares at any given time, and nightmares are even more common for people with certain mental health conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder.

The technique refers to playing a sound that is linked to an uplifting daytime experience. They emitted this sound through a wireless headband while participants were asleep, reducing nightmare frequency.

“There is a relationship between the types of emotions experienced in dreams and our emotional well-being,” says senior author Lampros Perogamvros, a psychiatrist at the Sleep Laboratory of the Geneva University Hospitals and the University of Geneva, in a media release.

“Based on this observation, we had the idea that we could help people by manipulating emotions in their dreams. In this study, we show that we can reduce the number of emotionally very strong and very negative dreams in patients suffering from nightmares.”

Sound Therapy Observations

The observations noted by the researchers following the sound therapy course included fewer nightmares as well as more joy during their dreams, says study authors.

Three months later, people in the control group reported an average of 1.5 nightmares a week, while those in the sound group reported less than 0.5 nightmares a week. People given the sound cue also reported having more dreams where they simply felt joy.

“We were positively surprised by how well the participants respected and tolerated the study procedures, for example performing imagery rehearsal therapy every day and wearing the sleep headband during the night,” says Perogamvros.

“We observed a fast decrease in nightmares, together with dreams becoming emotionally more positive. For us, researchers and clinicians, these findings are very promising both for the study of emotional processing during sleep and for the development of new therapies.”

According to the study authors, the study has a relatively small sample size, so the results shouldn’t be seen as definitive proof that sound cues can help people chase away bad dreams. But if these findings are validated by additional, larger studies, then the applications of targeted memory reactivation during sleep might extend well beyond nightmare therapy.
