Did Life on Earth Start in Space? An Asteroid Reveals Clues

asteroid sample of bennu

Imagine if the ingredients for life didn’t start on Earth but instead came from space. Sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie, right? Well, recent discoveries from NASA’s study of asteroid Bennu suggest that this might be true. Scientists have found key organic molecules, such as amino acids and DNA components, inside samples taken from the asteroid, providing strong evidence that space rocks like Bennu could have delivered the building blocks of life to our planet billions of years ago.

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission collected dust and rock samples from Bennu in 2020, and when the capsule landed back on Earth in September 2023, researchers were stunned to find even more material than expected. These samples have remained untouched by Earth’s environment, making them the purest extraterrestrial material scientists have ever studied. Now, researchers are uncovering incredible details about what may have happened in the early solar system.

The Ingredients for Life are Older than Earth

Asteroid Bennu is not just an ordinary space rock—it is a carbon-rich asteroid. This means it contains materials that are essential for life. When scientists analysed the samples, they found water, carbon, nitrogen and a variety of organic molecules, including 33 different amino acids. Amino acids are crucial because they help form proteins, which are the building blocks of life as we know it.

Even more exciting, the team detected all five nucleobases that makeup DNA and RNA: adenine, guanine, cytosine, thymine and uracil. These molecules carry genetic instructions for life on Earth. In simple terms, this indicates that the basic materials needed to create life might have existed in space long before Earth was formed.

Bennu’s samples also contained important minerals and salts, including some that had never been seen in asteroid samples before. Scientists believe these materials were once part of a much larger asteroid that formed about 4.5 billion years ago, possibly far from the Sun, where icy conditions allowed complex organic molecules to develop.

Did an Asteroid Deliver Life to Earth?

This discovery strengthens a long-standing scientific theory: asteroids and comets bombarded the early Earth, bringing water and organic materials that helped life begin. If this happened here, could it have happened on other planets too?

One puzzling question remains. If Bennu had all the right ingredients for life, why didn’t life form there? Scientists think it may be because the right environmental conditions, like stable water and warmth, were missing. However, the presence of water-rich minerals suggests that liquid water once existed inside Bennu’s parent asteroid. This means that chemical reactions could have taken place, helping to form the complex molecules needed for life.

Another surprising detail is that the amino acids in Bennu’s samples exist in two “mirror-image” versions, like left and right hands. On Earth, life only uses left-handed amino acids, but Bennu’s samples contain an equal mix of both. This suggests that before life began, both forms of amino acids were present, and something later caused Earth’s life forms to favour only the left-handed ones. Scientists are still trying to figure out why this happened.

These findings open up new questions about how life began—not just on Earth but possibly elsewhere in the universe. If space rocks like Bennu delivered the materials for life to our planet, could the same thing have happened on Mars, Europa (Jupiter’s moon), or Titan (Saturn’s moon)? Scientists plan to keep studying the Bennu samples to learn more about how these organic compounds formed and changed over time.

One thing is clear: the story of life on Earth may have started long before our planet even existed, written in the dust and rocks of ancient asteroids. As we continue exploring space, who knows what other secrets we’ll uncover?

What’s ‘Pakkay Dost’ and Why your Kids Should Watch it

pakkay dost by bilal

If you grew up in Pakistan, you might remember Uncle Sargam from Kaliyan, a beloved puppet show that entertained and educated generations. However, as time passed, Urdu programmes for children slowly faded from mainstream media. That’s where Pakkay Dost comes in. It is a vibrant and entertaining puppet show created by Bilal Maqsood, the legendary musician from Strings.

With Pakkay Dost, Maqsood has brought back quality Urdu-language content for kids. The show blends engaging storytelling, lively music and lovable puppet characters. It’s not just about fun—it’s about making learning enjoyable, instilling cultural pride and helping children grow emotionally and socially.

Now, Pakkay Dost is taking things a step further by partnering with ConnectHear to introduce sign language interpretation. This means that deaf children can also enjoy and learn from the show, making it an inclusive entertainment in Pakistan.

What Bilal Maqsood did to Make Pakkay Dost Stand Out

Unlike the sea of English-language cartoons and Hindi dubs dominating screens, Pakkay Dost fills a crucial gap by offering content in Urdu. The show isn’t just about language, it’s about values. Through its catchy songs and engaging narratives, it teaches kids about kindness, empathy and resilience.

Maqsood personally writes the scripts and songs, ensuring that every episode carries a meaningful message. He takes inspiration from everyday life and the lessons children need to learn. Whether it’s about expressing emotions, understanding friendship, or tackling social issues like body shaming and racism.

The best part are the characters; they are unforgettable. From Jagga, the grey monster who loves jalebis, to Bajjo, the wise green puppet inspired by Fatima Surayya Bajia, every puppet has a distinct personality that kids can relate to. The show has already sparked excitement among young audiences, with children forming strong connections with their favorite characters.

Creating a high-quality puppet show wasn’t easy. Bilal Maqsood spent nearly two years assembling a team, designing custom-made puppets and finding the right voices to bring them to life. But the effort has paid off—Pakkay Dost is now a rising favourite among children and parents alike.

Sindh University Protests Continue as Bill Sparks Outrage

Sindh University Protests Continue as Bill Sparks Outrage

Protests against the Sindh government’s proposed amendment to the Sindh Universities and Institutes Laws Act have been ongoing since January 6, disrupting academic activities at all public universities in the province. Educators oppose the bill that permits bureaucrats and non-academic officials to become vice-chancellors (VCs). Previously, a PhD was required, but now candidates with only a master’s degree can qualify, raising concerns about academic leadership and research quality.

Academics argue that individuals without research experience cannot effectively lead institutions that rely on research output for rankings. A VC with a master’s degree, instead of a PhD, may struggle to manage academic and research affairs. Professors worry that someone with a master’s degree in engineering can lead an engineering university. A medical university can be led by someone with a master’s degree, while a general university can be led by someone with a master’s in arts.

Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah defended the bill, saying it aims to improve university governance and combat corruption. However, education experts reject this reasoning, questioning whether bureaucrats are immune to such issues. Professors argue that no discussions were held with faculty members before drafting the bill. Since the 2018 amendment, which shifted university authority from the Governor to the Chief Minister, key positions have faced delays in appointments. Despite this, the Sindh government insists on passing the bill without consulting the academic community.

The protests have left universities deserted, disrupting students’ studies. Many spend the day wandering hallways before leaving. Professors assure that missed coursework will be covered, but students remain worried about their future. With no resolution in sight, the Sindh government must engage in discussions with educators to address their concerns.

New Zealand Mountain Becomes a Legal Person

New Zealand Mountain Becomes a Legal Person

It’s only January and we’re seeing the weirdest things happen. Currently, Taranaki Maunga, a sacred mountain in New Zealand, has been granted legal personhood by the nation. Legally, this means the mountain is entitled to have human rights and obligations. The bill that passed on Thursday is part of a larger movement to restore Māori rights and recognise the acts of injustice committed against them during colonisation.

Why was the Law Passed?

The mountain holds deep cultural, spiritual and historical importance for the Māori people of Taranaki. However, during colonisation, British settlers took the land and ignored Māori traditions. The New Zealand government has now recognised these past injustices and is making amends. This decision is part of a broader effort to return stolen land and recognise Indigenous rights.

How can a Mountain be a Person?

The new law grants Taranaki Maunga a legal identity under the name Te Kāhui Tupua. This status includes the mountain’s peaks and surrounding land. A new governing body will now act as the mountain’s voice. This group will include four members from local Māori tribes and four appointed by the government.

A Long History of Struggle

An ancestor to the Māori, Taranaki Maunga has watched over its children and grandchildren for centuries. In 1770, English navigator James Cook renamed it Mount Egmont. By the 19th century, the government had confiscated the mountain and much of the land around it. Māori traditions were outlawed and replaced with the encouragement of tourism.

In the 1970s and 80s, Māori activists fought to reclaim their cultural heritage. This led to greater recognition of Māori rights and language in New Zealand law. The government’s 2023 agreement with the eight Taranaki tribes was a step toward justice.

What Does this Mean for the Mountain?

With legal personhood, the mountain’s rights will help protect its environment. The new status will prevent forced sales, restore traditional Māori practices and support conservation efforts. Authorities will keep the land open to the public, but will now protect it in a way that respects its cultural significance.

Other Places with Personhood in New Zealand

So, this is not the first time something like this happened; New Zealand has done this before. In 2014, the government recognised Te Urewera, a large native forest, as a person. The local Tūhoe tribe became its guardian. In 2017, the Whanganui River also gained legal personhood to protect its sacred status.

A Moment of Unity

New Zealand’s Parliament voted unanimously in favour of the law, with all 123 members supporting it. After the vote, the public gallery erupted in a Māori waiata (song) as a celebration. This moment of unity comes at a time of debate over Indigenous rights in New Zealand.

Granting personhood to Taranaki Maunga is more than just a legal move. It is a recognition of the mountain’s deep cultural meaning and a way to heal historical wounds. This decision helps protect Indigenous heritage and ensures future generations can honour and care for their sacred land.

Black Boxes Recovered After Deadly American Airline Crash

Black Boxes Recovered After Deadly American Airline Crash

On Thursday investigators recovered the black boxes from an American Airlines passenger plane involved in a midair collision with a US Army helicopter over Washington’s Potomac River, killing 67 people on board.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed on Friday that it had recovered both the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder from the Bombardier passenger jet.

“The recorders are at the NTSB labs for evaluation,” the agency said in a post on X.

Jennifer Homendy, NTSB Chairman, earlier assured reporters that the agency would ‘leave no stone unturned’ in its probe into the incident, the first fatal U.S commercial airline crash since 2009.

“We are going to conduct a thorough investigation of this entire tragedy, looking at the facts,” Homendy said.

Trump’s Reaction to the Crash

The announcement comes following Donald Trump’s remarks, who suggested that diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies at the Federal Aviation Administration could have contributed to the tragedy.

“These are not people who should be doing this particular job,” Trump said at a news conference, without specifying whom he was referring to. “We want brilliant people doing this. This is a major chess game at the highest level.”

Before landing at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on Wednesday, air traffic controllers asked the pilots of American Airlines Flight 5342 if they could use Runway 33. The pilots adjusted their flight path accordingly.

Getting Ready for Ramadan: A Physical and Spiritual Guide

Getting Ready for Ramadan: A Physical and Spiritual Guide

The holy month of Ramadan is celebrated all over the world by Muslims. It is a month in which Muslims fast, pray and reflect to reinforce their faith, develop self-discipline and draw closer to God. However, for most Muslims, the preparations for Ramadan require intensive spiritual and practical work to have a seamless passage into the momentous month. With some planning, you can put the blessings of this time to good use.

Strengthening Your Faith before Ramadan

The first step in preparing for Ramadan is to set clear intentions. Take some moments to focus on what you would like to achieve spiritually. You may want to be more patient and concentrate on prayer, kindness and charity. Whatever your intentions are, it would help to keep them prominent in your mind so that they help you remain steadfast throughout the month.

Keeping up the habit of reading the Quran regularly before Ramadan gives you a head start for reading during fasting days. If you intend to finish the Quran during the month, consider dividing it into manageable portions for each day. Extra prayers and occasional supplications added to your daily life also help acclimatise your spirit and mind for the impending spiritual time.

Learning more about Ramadan enriches the experience as well. Attending lectures or reading about its significance strengthens understanding and motivation. The more knowledge you gain, the more meaningful the month becomes.

Preparing your Body for Fasting

Fasting for long hours can be a challenge, especially in the first few days. Preparing your body ahead of time makes it easier to adjust. Changing your sleep schedule gradually helps you adapt to the early morning Suhoor and late-night prayers. Going to bed earlier ensures that you get enough rest while making the most of Ramadan’s spiritual benefits.

Adjusting eating habits before the month starts can also make fasting smoother. Reducing caffeine and sugar intake helps prevent headaches and energy crashes. Eating smaller, balanced meals trains your body to go without food for longer hours. Staying hydrated is equally important, so drinking plenty of water before Ramadan keeps your body in good shape for fasting days.

Fasting a few days in the month before Ramadan, especially during Sha’ban, is a great way to prepare. It helps the body adjust to staying without food and strengthens self-control before the full month of fasting begins.

Connecting with the Community and Giving Back

Ramadan is not just about personal growth—it is also about supporting others. Planning charitable activities before the month starts ensures you can give back in meaningful ways. Whether through donations, feeding the needy, or volunteering time, acts of kindness add to the blessings of the month.

Strengthening family and community ties is another important part of Ramadan. Planning iftar gatherings or virtual meetups bring loved ones together, creating a sense of unity and shared faith. Educating non-Muslim friends and colleagues about Ramadan also promotes understanding and respect, making it easier to observe fasting in different social settings.

Organising your Home and Routine

A peaceful space makes it easier to focus on worship and reflection. Cleaning and organising your home before Ramadan helps create a calm and distraction-free environment. A tidy home sets the stage for a peaceful and productive month.

Meal planning saves time and energy, allowing more focus on prayer and worship. Preparing healthy, energy-boosting meals in advance makes Suhoor and Iftar easier to manage. Choosing foods that provide long-lasting energy helps make fasting more comfortable throughout the day.

Setting a daily Ramadan routine keeps everything balanced. Allocating time for prayer, Quran reading, work and rest ensures that no part of life is neglected. A structured day helps you stay consistent in worship while managing daily responsibilities smoothly.

However one prepares for Ramadan, one will surely experience its beauty and spirit. Preparation gives room to focus on spiritual fitness, physical fitness and social awareness. Thus, one can step into the holy month with an open mind and a willing heart. With these mindsets and preparations in place, Ramadan is viewed not only as a time for fasting but also as a journey to enhance the self on a personal and spiritual level. So keep yourself prepared with these tips, and make the most of this Ramadan!

Virat Kohli Out of ‘Fab Four’? Ricky Ponting Thinks So!

has-virat-kohli-lost-his-edge-cricket-virat-kohli-out-of-fab-four-ricky-ponting-thinks-so

Virat Kohli not in the ‘Fab Four’? That’s a shocker! But according to legendary Australian captain Ricky Ponting, the Indian superstar no longer makes the cut. Instead, Ponting’s list includes Steve Smith, Joe Root, and Kane Williamson—leaving Kohli out of the conversation.

Kohli’s Recent Struggles

Kohli hasn’t been at his best lately, and his performances in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia didn’t help. Sure, he kicked things off with a century in the first Test, but after that, things went south.

Across five matches, he managed just 190 runs. For a player of his calibre, that’s below par. Ponting acknowledged that Kohli was once unmatched. Five years ago, he was the benchmark, scoring runs for fun across all formats.

But times have changed, and the other three have outperformed him in Test cricket over the last few years.

Read More: Cricket’s Dirty Secret: The Growing Payment Crisis in Franchise Leagues

“Five or six years ago, when this big four emerged, with [Virat] Kohli being one of those as well, Joe was probably down near the bottom part of that because he hadn’t made the hundreds the other guys had made, but he’s made 19 hundreds in the past four years,” Ponting told The Sydney Morning Herald.

Steve Smith Leading the Charge

While Kohli struggled, Steve Smith has been in phenomenal form. He smashed 141 runs in the first Test against Sri Lanka, marking his third century in just four matches. That innings also saw him reach the 10,000-run milestone in Test cricket—becoming only the fourth Australian to do so.

Ponting didn’t hold back in praising his fellow Aussie. “Is he [Steve Smith] the best player of his generation? It’s hard to argue against it,” he added.

“Joe Root is the other one now, and [Kane] Williamson’s record is outstanding as well. Joe’s last couple of years have elevated him right back up there, I think.”

He also pointed out that Joe Root’s resurgence has been remarkable. In the last four years, Root has piled up 19 Test centuries—numbers that put him right up there with the best. Kane Williamson, too, has been a model of consistency, making the Fab Four debate even more intense.

Read More: Mitchell Marsh Out Of Champions Trophy: What It Means for Australia?

The ‘Best of the Best’ Debate

Ponting admitted that opinions on the best batter of this generation vary based on nationality.

  • Ask an Aussie, and they’ll say Steve Smith.
  • Ask an Englishman, and it’s Joe Root.
  • Ask a Kiwi, and they’ll pick Kane Williamson.

But when you look purely at numbers, Smith, Root, and Williamson have edged ahead of Kohli in the longest format.

What’s Next for Kohli?

Being left out of the Fab Four conversation is a big deal, but Kohli has bounced back from setbacks before. With his hunger and work ethic, don’t be surprised if he proves the doubters wrong. After all, great players always find a way to rise again.

For now, though, it seems the Fab Four might just be the Fab Three. What do you think—has Ponting got it right, or is Kohli’s comeback just around the corner?

Mitchell Marsh Out Of Champions Trophy: What It Means for Australia?

mitchell-marsh-out-of-champions-trophy-australia

Australia has been dealt a big blow ahead of the Champions Trophy—Mitchell Marsh is out. A nagging back injury has ruled him out of the tournament, and he might not play again this season.

This isn’t just any player we’re talking about. Marsh is Australia’s T20I captain and has often stepped in as ODI skipper. His absence forces the selectors to rethink their plans, especially in the top order.

A Season to Forget for Mitchell Marsh

Marsh’s season has been far from ideal. He struggled during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India, scoring just 73 runs in seven innings. His bowling was limited, and fitness concerns followed him throughout the series.

After returning home, he played just one BBL match before taking a break to refresh physically and mentally for the Champions Trophy. But the back issues persisted, and now he’s sidelined.

Read More: Champions Trophy: Gaddafi Stadium’s New ‘Running Man’ Statue to Welcome Fans

A Cricket Australia statement confirmed the injury, calling it “lower back pain and dysfunction.” The selectors decided that [Mitchell] Marsh needed an extended period of rehab rather than risking further complications.

Who Replaces Marsh?

With Mitchell Marsh out, Australia must rethink their balance. A few names are already in the mix:

  • Jake Fraser-McGurk: The explosive youngster could be a like-for-like replacement at No.3, but he’s yet to prove himself in List A cricket.
  • Will Sutherland: A solid allrounder who was set for an ODI tour last year before a back injury ruled him out.
  • Beau Webster: The man who replaced Marsh in the Test squad could now get an ODI call-up.
  • Cooper Connolly: A spin-bowling allrounder, but Australia already has plenty of spin options.

Adding to Australia’s headaches, Pat Cummins is also uncertain for the tournament due to an ankle injury. If he misses out, Australia will need a new captain. Steven Smith, Travis Head, and Josh Inglis are all potential candidates.

Read More: Cricket’s Dirty Secret: The Growing Payment Crisis in Franchise Leagues

Marsh played a crucial role in Australia’s 2023 ODI World Cup win, smashing centuries against Pakistan and Bangladesh. Since moving up the order in early 2023, he has averaged 44.54 with a strike rate of 109.13.

Replacing him won’t be easy. But Australia has until February 11 to make changes to their squad without ICC approval.

Before the Champions Trophy kicks off, they have two ODIs in Sri Lanka on February 12 and 14. These games could be the perfect chance to test out replacements and finalize the squad.

Reflecting on her move to Istanbul, Farheen shared how she balanced a high-profile corporate role while ensuring her family’s well-being – proving that women do not have to choose between ambition and family—they can create their own balance. She also spoke about her leadership in Pakistan’s male-dominated tea industry, where she remains the only woman in key boardrooms, showing that leadership is not granted, it is claimed.

As a company committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace, Lipton Teas and Infusions Pakistan has implemented initiatives such as enhanced maternity and paternity leave, flexible work arrangements, and structured career re-entry programs to support women at every stage of their professional journey. These initiatives reflect the company’s belief that breaking biases requires not just conversations, but tangible actions that enable women to lead and succeed.

She left the audience with a bold call to action: “Don’t just take your seat at the table—shake it. Challenge outdated norms and pave the way for the next generation of women leaders.”

The power problem stems from a faulty PMT (Pole-Mounted Transformer), which has been malfunctioning for a while. Despite multiple requests for its replacement, no action has been taken. The technical issues with the PMT cause daily power disruptions, endangering patients, especially during surgeries. While the generators are keeping the power on, they come with added costs.
