“We have requested the government to provide us with a security consultant during the tour who will maintain communication with them at all times regarding the security issues,” Yunus explained.

Jalal Yunus assured reporters that Pakistan has committed to providing state-level security to Bangladesh team, similar to the arrangements during the Asia Cup. “We go there because they assure us of state-level security, and after they assured us about it, the tour was fixed,” he said.

Economic Confidence Among Finance Professionals Edges Higher Globally Despite Big Fall In North America

Lahore – July 31, 2024: The latest ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) and IMA^® (Institute of Management Accountants)  Global Economic Conditions Survey (GECS) suggests that confidence among accountants and finance professionals edged slightly higher in Q2 2024 and is just above its historical average. For chief financial officers (CFOs), all the key global indicators rose, with sharp gains evident in the New Orders and Capital Expenditure indices.

There were some notable regional differences. Western Europe-based accountants reported another decent increase in confidence as the euro area and UK economies continue to stage recoveries. Even Asia Pacific saw a small rise off the back of a huge gain previously, and the New Orders Index increased strongly. The region is benefitting from improvements in the global economy, including in the manufacturing sector and the upward moving technology cycle. However, North America’s financial professionals reported a sharp fall in confidence, which was even more pronounced in the U.S.

The proportion of global respondents reporting ‘increased costs’ eased in Q2 but remains elevated by historical standards. Cost pressures remain high in all regions except the Middle East.

The GECS also asks accountants to rank their top three risk priorities and, for the first time in a year, the economy is not the top concern for respondents working in financial services, although it is close to the highest it has ever been for those in the corporate sector. The Q2 survey responses also reveal how organisations are increasingly struggling to get a grip on cybersecurity, which was ranked as the third-highest risk priority for all sectors combined.

Alain Mulder, Senior Director Europe Operations & Global Special Projects at IMA^® said: ‘The American economy has slowed from the heady pace of expansion in the second half of 2023, and the latest results raise the risk of some further moderation over coming quarters. The probability that the U.S. Federal Reserve begins easing monetary policy after the summer has increased, although inflation developments over coming months will be crucial.’

Jonathan Ashworth, Chief Economist, and ACCA, said: ‘The GECS points to some further improvement in the global economy in Q2. Further signs of a pickup in the important Western European and Asia Pacific regions are encouraging, although the decline in the North American and U.S. indices bear watching closely.’

Confidence is significantly higher than its historical average in Asia Pacific, slightly above in the Middle East and Western Europe, at its average in South Asia, slightly below average in Africa, and well below average in North America.

Ashworth concluded: ‘Despite the resilience of the global economy so far in 2024, many important downside risks and challenges remain. Sticky inflation could limit central banks’ scope for monetary easing, while geopolitical and political risks remain very elevated and will continue to create significant uncertainty.’

I was looking forward to the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics Games. Now personally, I love a big spectacle. If you can recall, the 2008 opening ceremony in Beijing, is often called “the greatest ever” because of its grand extravagance. And of course, the one in London in 2012, which included everything from politics to humor and great music. It presented the very essence of Britain to millions of viewers worldwide.

Paris Olympics Disappoints Many

If you’re an Olympic fan, then last Friday must’ve been a dream for you. Sitting in front of the TV, anticipating what Paris had in store for you. However, if you were like any other fan, we’re sure it was a crashing disappointment for you too. It wasn’t just the rain that dampened the proceedings. It was also the perplexing artistic choices made by the organizers and the lackluster performances of many involved.

The French media reported that it cost around $130 million, which is four times the cost of London’s critically acclaimed 2012 offering. Where was the money spent?

If you did yourself a favor and didn’t watch the Paris Olympics, here is what you missed. Initially, it seemed like a biblical scene of Christ and his 12 apostles sharing a last meal, but with a twist. There were drag queens, a transgender model, a near-naked Greek god of wine, and music by DJ Butch. Her presence, being proudly Jewish, fat, and a lesbian, seemed to tick a lot of boxes in the A-Z of “inclusivity,” which appeared to be the primary theme of this year’s ceremony.

Around Eid, thousands of animals have been sacrificed. However, a shocking case shocked the entire nation. A man brutally amputated a beautiful camel. The story resulted in everyone coming to its aid.

Yet, no one learned a lesson. Cases such as another amputated donkey, and brutally murdered dog still showed up.

Animal cruelty in Pakistan is a widespread issue, not just isolated incidents. A national news channel report shared that these acts of cruelty are alarmingly common which helped in highlighting a systemic problem that requires urgent attention. If they ever are enforced. The legal framework is weak, with minimal penalties that do not deter offenders. When requested to put the man responsible for murdering an innocent dog, it was revealed that the bail amount was only 100PKR.

Additionally, law enforcement agencies often lack the necessary training and resources to handle animal cruelty cases effectively. Why? Because there is absolutely no funding for animal welfare, leading to a culture of impunity.

To combat this issue, Pakistan must implement comprehensive animal protection laws with strict penalties. Establishing specialized animal protection units within law enforcement is essential. Training police officers to handle animal cruelty cases can significantly improve the response to these incidents.
