The Rise of Indoor Cricket in Karachi

The Rise of Indoor Cricket in Karachi

Indoor cricket is gradually gaining popularity in Karachi, a city that already breathes cricket. With a rather different format and more practical accessibility, indoor cricket promises to open new doors in the game for all to play without weather and even space constraints. Several state-of-the-art facilities have emerged in Karachi, providing high-quality pitches and modern amenities to cater to the city’s burgeoning community of indoor cricket enthusiasts.

What is Indoor Cricket?

Indoor cricket is an organised sport that originated in Germany in the 1970s and has since spread across the globe. It keeps the fundamental principles of traditional cricket but is adapted for an enclosed environment, making it perfect for urban settings where outdoor spaces are often limited. A typical indoor cricket game consists of two innings, each with 16 overs, and takes about 60 to 70 minutes to complete. The game is played on a smaller pitch surrounded by a net, ensuring that the ball remains in play and the game progresses quickly.

Indian Media’s Propaganda Against Pakistan Women’s Cricket Team

unequal-treatment-of-pakistan-women-cricket-team

The cricketing world is buzzing again, but this time it’s not about a thrilling match or a superstar’s heroics. Instead, it’s about the hybrid model approved for ICC events and its ripple effects. Unsurprisingly, Indian media has reignited propaganda, raising doubts about Pakistan Women cricket team and their participation in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025.

The Hybrid Model: A Game-Changer?

First, let’s set the record straight. The International Cricket Council (ICC) recently confirmed the hybrid model for the Champions Trophy 2025. This means the event will be hosted across Pakistan and a neutral venue. For matches involving India and Pakistan during the 2024-2027 ICC cycle, neutral venues are now the go-to solution.

This move, though pragmatic, has sparked plenty of debates. Indian media, in particular, has spun it into a fresh narrative, this time targeting Pakistan’s women’s cricket team.

Read More: PSL 10 Draft Heads to Gwadar: Cricket Meets Coastal Charm

What’s the Real Story?

So, what’s the fuss about? According to Indian media, Pakistan Women team might not make it to the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025. But let’s break it down rationally.

Qualification for the Women’s World Cup isn’t a straightforward ticket. The top five teams from the ICC Women’s Championship 2022-25, along with host India, will qualify directly. Pakistan, currently ranked eighth, has missed the direct qualification bus.

That’s where the qualifier rounds come in. Two spots are still up for grabs through the Women’s World Cup Qualifier 2025. Pakistan will compete with teams like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Ireland, West Indies, and New Zealand to secure their place.

The Road Ahead for Pakistan

Pakistan’s women’s team faces a steep climb. Their recent performances in ODI series against New Zealand, West Indies, and Bangladesh haven’t been stellar. These losses have left them in a tough spot for the qualifiers.

But let’s not count them out just yet. Cricket, after all, is unpredictable, and the qualifier round offers a fresh start. With focused preparation and strong performances, Pakistan’s women’s team can still make it to the World Cup.

Adding to the mix, Pakistan has confirmed that their matches during the Women’s World Cup will be held at a neutral venue. The team will not travel to India for the tournament, maintaining consistency with the hybrid model.

This decision aligns with the same approach used for the Champions Trophy 2025. While it’s not an ideal scenario, it ensures that cricket remains the priority without political distractions.

PSL 10 Draft Heads to Gwadar: Cricket Meets Coastal Charm

psl-10-draft-heads-to-gwadar-cricket-meets-coastal-charm

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced that Gwadar, the breathtaking port city in Balochistan, will host the Player Draft for Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10. This exciting event is set to take place on Saturday, January 11, 2025.

Why Gwadar? A Bold and Brilliant Choice

Gwadar is known for its stunning coastline, strategic importance, and untapped beauty. By choosing this port city as the venue for the Player Draft, the PCB is making a powerful statement.

According to PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, this decision isn’t just about logistics—it’s about vision. “Gwadar represents the heart of Pakistan’s economic future,” he said. The event aims to inspire the youth of Balochistan to take up cricket professionally while showcasing the city’s cultural and economic significance.

Naqvi also highlighted the unifying power of cricket. “Hosting the draft in Gwadar celebrates the unity cricket brings to our nation,” he added.

Expanding PSL’s Reach

PSL CEO Salman Naseer echoed similar sentiments, calling the move a step towards expanding PSL’s reach. “It gives me great pride to announce Gwadar as the host city for the PSL 10 Player Draft,” he said.

Naseer emphasized that PSL isn’t just a league—it’s a celebration of Pakistan’s passion and talent. Taking the draft to Gwadar is a way to inspire young cricketers in Balochistan and beyond to dream big.

What Does This Mean for Cricket?

This decision is a game-changer. For years, Balochistan’s cricketing potential hasn’t been fully realized. Hosting such a high-profile event in Gwadar sends a strong message—it’s time to invest in the region’s talent and infrastructure.

The event will also shine a global spotlight on Gwadar, a city with immense beauty and potential. The PCB’s decision could pave the way for more cricketing events in the region, encouraging local talent and boosting the area’s profile.

Hackers Steal $2.2 Billion from Crypto Platforms

Hackers Steal $2.2 Billion from Crypto Platforms

The research firm Chainalysis has released a new report claiming that North Korean hackers were responsible for more than half of the $2.2 billion in cryptocurrency thefts in 2024, which is 21% more than the previous year but still less than the thefts that broke records in 2021 and 2022.

North Korea’s Massive Share of Crypto Thefts

North Korean hackers were responsible for $1.3 billion of the stolen amount; double what they stole last year. Some of these hackers involved North Korean operatives pretending to be remote IT workers to infiltrate crypto and tech firms, according to the study.

North Korea has been accused by the US government of using these embezzled funds to support its weapons programs and avoid international sanctions. In fact, a federal court in St. Louis recently charged 14 North Koreans with participating in a massive extortion scheme.

Big Crypto Heists of 2024

This year saw some significant crypto thefts, including:

  • $300 million stolen from DMM Bitcoin, a Japanese crypto exchange.
  • $235 million swiped from WazirX, an Indian crypto platform.

Read more: Luxury Brands Embrace Crypto Payments

Why Crypto is Being Stolen

The primary cause of these thefts, according to the report, was compromised private keys. Cryptocurrency assets are accessed and managed using private keys, and losing them can have disastrous results.

“Centralised exchanges manage substantial amounts of user funds, so a private key compromise can be catastrophic,” a study noted.

Bitcoin’s Surge and a Changing Landscape

Bitcoin’s price has more than doubled this year, fueled by optimism that incoming US President Donald Trump will be more favourable toward cryptocurrency than Joe Biden. The increase in cryptocurrency thefts, however, highlights the necessity of stronger security measures to counteract increasingly complex hacking methods.

A Reward for Information

Anyone with information about North Korea’s supposed cryptocurrency theft schemes could receive up to $5 million, according to a reward offered by the US State Department.

As cryptocurrencies gain more value and attention, they are becoming an even bigger target for hackers. The industry must improve its security to protect users’ funds in an ever-evolving threat landscape.

Babar Azam Breaks Half-Century Drought & MS Dhoni’s Record

babar-azam-breaks-half-century-drought-ms-dhoni-record

When Babar Azam walks onto the field, there’s always a sense of anticipation. And during the second ODI against South Africa at Newlands, the former Pakistan skipper didn’t disappoint. Not only did he break his half-century drought, but he also etched his name into the record books, surpassing none other than MS Dhoni.

Breaking Records and a Drought

Pakistan’s batting maestro scored a solid 73 off 95 balls, laced with seven beautiful boundaries. This wasn’t just another fifty; it was his first since November 2023. To make it sweeter, it was his 33rd in ODIs and his 39th 50+ score against SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) countries across formats.

With this knock, he overtook Dhoni’s tally of 38 such scores. For fans, it was a reminder of why Babar Azam is often touted as one of the best in the modern game. His calmness, technique, and ability to deliver when it matters most were all on display.

Partnerships That Matter

Babar’s innings wasn’t a solo show. He shared a crucial 115-run partnership with Mohammad Rizwan, who played a gutsy knock of 80 off 82 balls. Rizwan’s innings featured ten boundaries, including three towering sixes.

While the partnership laid a strong foundation, it was Kamran Ghulam who provided the fireworks. His blistering 63 off just 32 balls, including five sixes and four boundaries, pushed Pakistan’s total to an imposing 329.

South Africa’s Fight and Fall

Chasing 330 is never easy, and South Africa learned that the hard way. Their innings never really found rhythm, thanks to some fiery bowling from Pakistan’s pace duo.

Shaheen Afridi was at his lethal best, grabbing four wickets, while Naseem Shah chipped in with three crucial scalps. Heinrich Klaasen tried his best to steady the ship, smashing 97 off 74 balls with eight boundaries and four sixes. But it wasn’t enough.

South Africa were bowled out for 248 in just 43.1 overs, handing Pakistan an 81-run victory and an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.

With the series in the bag, all eyes now turn to Johannesburg for the third ODI on December 22. While it’s a dead rubber, Pakistan will look to make a clean sweep, and South Africa will aim for a consolation win.

The couple was reported missing at 6:30 pm, prompting a search and rescue mission by Pattaya City authorities. Nattanon Chamnankul, head of Pattaya City Sea Rescue, explained, “We received a call at 6:30 pm from a jet ski operator that one of their jet skis and the clients were missing. So, we set out on a search operation.”

Despite dark seas and challenging weather, the search initially failed to locate the couple. Abdulrahman used beach lights as a guide and swam ashore, arriving in a state of extreme exhaustion. Chamnankul said, “The husband had swum for five hours to reach the shore and was worried about his wife.”

The rescue team then resumed their search with Abdulrahman on board. Six hours after the search began, they found Atheer at 2 am. Although she sustained a minor leg injury, both were in good health. They later returned to Saudi Arabia after settling a 50,000 Thai baht ($1,400) damage fee with the jet ski operator.

Clemency Petition for Aafia Siddiqui Submitted to White House

Clemency Petition for Aafia Siddiqui Submitted to White House

The White House has received a clemency petition for Dr. Aafia Siddiqui. Siddiqui is a Pakistani neuroscientist who is currently serving an 86-year prison sentence in the United States.

Before his term ends on January 20, 2025, supporters are pleading with President Joe Biden to release her on humanitarian grounds.

Pakistani Delegation Advocates for Release

A delegation from Pakistan, led by Senator Bushra Anjum Butt, visited the United States to press for Siddiqui’s release. The group included Senator Talha Mehmood and psychiatrist Dr. Iqbal Afridi. Acting on instructions from the Islamabad High Court, they met with several US lawmakers and officials, including Congressman Jim McGovern, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, and Senator Chris Van Hollen, a Democrat born in Karachi.

Elizabeth Horst, the principal deputy assistant secretary of state for South and Central Asia, was given an update by the delegation on Siddiqui’s case. They discussed legal options during these discussions and emphasised how urgent it is to grant clemency.

Meeting Dr. Aafia Siddiqui

The delegation visited Dr. Siddiqui at her detention facility, the Federal Medical Centre in Fort Worth, Texas. Senator Talha Mehmood described their three-hour meeting to be “encouraging.”

“President Biden has over 60 pardon requests on his desk, including Dr. Aafia Siddiqui’s. We are hopeful that her case will be prioritised and that the president will consider it with compassion,” he added.

Efforts from Pakistan’s Leadership

The delegation’s efforts are part of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s larger diplomatic campaign. In an October 2024 letter to President Biden, Sharif pleaded for Siddiqui’s clemency because of her deteriorating health.

Clemency Petition for Aafia Siddiqui Submitted to White House
Clemency Petition for Aafia Siddiqui Submitted to White House

In his letter, Sharif stated, “I urgently request you to exercise your authority as the leader of the United States to grant clemency to Aafia Siddiqui and secure her release on compassionate grounds.”

Siddiqui’s Background

Born in Karachi, Dr. Aafia Siddiqui moved to the US in 1990 on a student visa, earning a doctorate in neuroscience from Brandeis University. Allegations of her links to Al Qaeda surfaced in 2003 after the capture of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, her second husband’s uncle and a key figure in the 9/11 attacks.

In 2008, she was caught in Afghanistan with documents mentioning US landmarks and cyanide, according to reports. Siddiqui was found guilty in 2010 and given an 86-year sentence after it was alleged that she attempted to seize a US officer’s rifle while being questioned. However, many people in Pakistan see her as a victim of injustice.

A Complicated Path Forward

A South Asia expert. Michael Kugelman, highlighted the political complexities, tweeting: “Could we see Imran Khan supporters call on the incoming Trump administration to propose to Pakistan an Imran Khan/Aafia Siddiqui release deal?”

The request for clemency is a major diplomatic effort to get Dr Siddiqui released. As President Biden’s term draws to a close, her supporters are still holding out hope for a kind ruling. “We’re keeping our fingers crossed,” said one member of the Pakistani-American community.

We will begin to gradually implement this in India over the next few months,” the company stated in its blog post.

The initiative will roll out gradually in India over the coming months. Creators will be given a grace period to adjust their content in line with YouTube’s updated guidelines. International Migrants Day: A Path Ahead

International Migrant Day

December 18 marks International Migrants Day, an opportunity and time to reflect on the challenges migrants face and the immense contributions they make globally. Migration can be considered both a necessity and an opportunity and has been a key driver of human progress. From the historic migration during the Partition of India in 1947 to the evolving dynamics of today, migration shapes societies and transforms lives.

Migration As A Global Challenge and Opportunity

Migration is not a new phenomenon. The Partition of India in 1947 saw one of the largest human migrations in history. Millions were observed crossing borders in search of safety and belonging. While this event was extremely challenging and filled with hardships, both emotional and physical, it highlighted the resilience of individuals striving for a better future- not as much for themselves but for their children and families.

Fast-forward to today and migration remains a critical global issue. The UNU-MERIT is an institute with over 15 years of migration research. Recently it pointed out that this is both a challenge and a transformative opportunity. The work they have done emphasises the need for thoughtful and evidence-based migration policies.

Prof. Dr. Melissa Siegel is the Head of Migration Studies at UNU-MERIT. She identified pressing issues for 2025. These were inclusive but not limited to labour shortages in ageing economies, waning public support for migration, and ongoing conflicts driving asylum demands. She stressed the importance of safeguarding refugee protections and creating efficient legal pathways to rebuild trust in migration policies.

Moreover, UNU-MERIT’s research highlights the interconnectedness of migration with education and economic development. Inclusive learning environments and pragmatic policies not only benefit migrants but also strengthen host communities.

A Critical Perspective On Female Migrants

Migration impacts everyone, but migrant women face unique challenges. According to reports, there are 117.6 million female migrants of working age worldwide. Many work in sectors like domestic and care work, often isolated and vulnerable to exploitation. The COVID-19 pandemic intensified these vulnerabilities, with 8.5 million migrant women’s jobs at risk.

Migration offers significant opportunities for women. It provides a chance to escape repressive conditions and improve their social standing. Female migrants also play a crucial role in shaping cultural norms and driving development in their home countries. To address the widening gender gap in migration, experts call for greater gender equality and targeted protections for female migrants.

As UN Secretary-General António Guterres notes moving should be a choice, not a necessity. Migrants often take on crucial roles, from healthcare to transportation, that keep societies functioning, especially during crises like COVID-19. However, political and media narratives frequently oversimplify this, overlooking their complexities and benefits.

On this International Migrants Day, let’s commit to reimagining the difficulties faced by migrants. By fostering and celebrating the contributions of migrants, we can create societies that value human dignity and resilience.

How To Decide if Dropshipping is For You

Dropshipping

Dropshipping is one of the simplest ways to start an online business without worrying about managing inventory or shipping products. Yes, it is just that simple. In this business model, you sell products directly to customers without handling them yourself. Instead, a supplier stores, packages, and ships the products on your behalf. But the profit? It’s all yours! This business model is super low-risk and can be done from any corner of the world. Moreover, it is the perfect opportunity to exploit the magic of social media marketing. So, let’s break down how it actually works.

How Does Dropshipping Work?

Dropshipping starts with choosing a niche for your online store. If you’re wondering what a niche is, it’s simple. A niche is essentially the category or theme of products you want to sell. It’s important to pick something you’re interested in or have a good market demand, like fitness gear, pet supplies, or home décor.

Once you’ve picked your niche, ensure you find a very reliable supplier. Platforms like AliExpress, Oberlo, or Spocket connect you with suppliers that specialise in dropshipping. You can reach out to them and proceed with your business dealings accordingly. Look for suppliers with good reviews, fast shipping times, and high-quality products to avoid disappointing your customers.

Next, set up your online store. You can use platform-specific sites that cater to dropshipping entrepreneurs. Then, create a professional-looking website. These platforms are easy to use, even for beginners, and come with templates and tools to help you start selling.

After your store is ready, add products by importing them from your supplier. You don’t need to hold any stock yourself. When a customer places an order, you purchase the product from your supplier, who ships it directly to the customer. This means you don’t need to worry about packing or delivery. How convenient!

What is Dropshipping?
What is Dropshipping?

The key to success in dropshipping is marketing. Using social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook to promote your store is the most important step. Paid ads can also help you reach more potential customers. Content creation, like blogs or videos, can build trust and attract buyers to your site.

Dropshipping has many benefits. You don’t need to invest in inventory upfront, making it affordable for beginners. It’s also flexible—you can work from anywhere and choose your own hours. However, there are challenges too. Since you rely on suppliers, shipping times can vary, and you have less control over product quality.
