International Migrants Day: A Path Ahead

International Migrant Day

December 18 marks International Migrants Day, an opportunity and time to reflect on the challenges migrants face and the immense contributions they make globally. Migration can be considered both a necessity and an opportunity and has been a key driver of human progress. From the historic migration during the Partition of India in 1947 to the evolving dynamics of today, migration shapes societies and transforms lives.

Migration As A Global Challenge and Opportunity

Migration is not a new phenomenon. The Partition of India in 1947 saw one of the largest human migrations in history. Millions were observed crossing borders in search of safety and belonging. While this event was extremely challenging and filled with hardships, both emotional and physical, it highlighted the resilience of individuals striving for a better future- not as much for themselves but for their children and families.

Fast-forward to today and migration remains a critical global issue. The UNU-MERIT is an institute with over 15 years of migration research. Recently it pointed out that this is both a challenge and a transformative opportunity. The work they have done emphasises the need for thoughtful and evidence-based migration policies.

Prof. Dr. Melissa Siegel is the Head of Migration Studies at UNU-MERIT. She identified pressing issues for 2025. These were inclusive but not limited to labour shortages in ageing economies, waning public support for migration, and ongoing conflicts driving asylum demands. She stressed the importance of safeguarding refugee protections and creating efficient legal pathways to rebuild trust in migration policies.

Moreover, UNU-MERIT’s research highlights the interconnectedness of migration with education and economic development. Inclusive learning environments and pragmatic policies not only benefit migrants but also strengthen host communities.

A Critical Perspective On Female Migrants

Migration impacts everyone, but migrant women face unique challenges. According to reports, there are 117.6 million female migrants of working age worldwide. Many work in sectors like domestic and care work, often isolated and vulnerable to exploitation. The COVID-19 pandemic intensified these vulnerabilities, with 8.5 million migrant women’s jobs at risk.

Women Migrants
Women Migrants

Migration offers significant opportunities for women. It provides a chance to escape repressive conditions and improve their social standing. Female migrants also play a crucial role in shaping cultural norms and driving development in their home countries. To address the widening gender gap in migration, experts call for greater gender equality and targeted protections for female migrants.

As UN Secretary-General António Guterres notes moving should be a choice, not a necessity. Migrants often take on crucial roles, from healthcare to transportation, that keep societies functioning, especially during crises like COVID-19. However, political and media narratives frequently oversimplify this, overlooking their complexities and benefits.

On this International Migrants Day, let’s commit to reimagining the difficulties faced by migrants. By fostering and celebrating the contributions of migrants, we can create societies that value human dignity and resilience.

How To Decide if Dropshipping is For You

Dropshipping

Dropshipping is one of the simplest ways to start an online business without worrying about managing inventory or shipping products. Yes, it is just that simple. In this business model, you sell products directly to customers without handling them yourself. Instead, a supplier stores, packages, and ships the products on your behalf. But the profit? It’s all yours! This business model is super low-risk and can be done from any corner of the world. Moreover, it is the perfect opportunity to exploit the magic of social media marketing. So, let’s break down how it actually works.

How Does Dropshipping Work?

Dropshipping starts with choosing a niche for your online store. If you’re wondering what a niche is, it’s simple. A niche is essentially the category or theme of products you want to sell. It’s important to pick something you’re interested in or have a good market demand, like fitness gear, pet supplies, or home décor.

Once you’ve picked your niche, ensure you find a very reliable supplier. Platforms like AliExpress, Oberlo, or Spocket connect you with suppliers that specialise in dropshipping. You can reach out to them and proceed with your business dealings accordingly. Look for suppliers with good reviews, fast shipping times, and high-quality products to avoid disappointing your customers.

Next, set up your online store. You can use platform-specific sites that cater to dropshipping entrepreneurs. Then, create a professional-looking website. These platforms are easy to use, even for beginners, and come with templates and tools to help you start selling.

After your store is ready, add products by importing them from your supplier. You don’t need to hold any stock yourself. When a customer places an order, you purchase the product from your supplier, who ships it directly to the customer. This means you don’t need to worry about packing or delivery. How convenient!

What is Dropshipping?
What is Dropshipping?

The key to success in dropshipping is marketing. Using social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook to promote your store is the most important step. Paid ads can also help you reach more potential customers. Content creation, like blogs or videos, can build trust and attract buyers to your site.

Dropshipping has many benefits. You don’t need to invest in inventory upfront, making it affordable for beginners. It’s also flexible—you can work from anywhere and choose your own hours. However, there are challenges too. Since you rely on suppliers, shipping times can vary, and you have less control over product quality.

Is It Right for You?

Dropshipping is a great way to start an online business with minimal investment. It’s ideal for people who want to test products or learn about e-commerce without the risks of traditional retail. With the right niche, marketing strategy, and supplier, you can build a profitable store. This is the perfect side hustle for everyone!

Inauguration of Pakistan’s First Genetic Molecular Lab

Pakistan's First Molecular Laboratory

Karachi has achieved a significant milestone in healthcare with the inauguration of Pakistan’s first genetic molecular laboratory at Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU). The Association of Pakistani Physicians of North America (APPNA) established this groundbreaking facility. It Promises to revolutionise medical diagnostics in the country.

Early Detection of Genetic Disorders

The laboratory is intended to fill a critical gap in the early detection and management of genetic disorders. Equipped with cutting-edge technology, it diagnoses physical and mental disabilities in premature babies and identifies genetic defects in children and adults. This allows families to predict health risks and receive early interventions and tailored medical care.

Speaking at the launch event at the Karachi Press Club, APPNA President Dr. Asif Mohiuddin highlighted the lab’s transformative potential. “This facility is a significant step toward modernising medical diagnostics in Pakistan. It will enable us to detect genetic disorders and prevent complications in premature infants,” he stated.

State-of-the-Art Capabilities

It provides prenatal diagnostic capabilities like assessing genetic makeup and establishing a child’s gender through extraction from maternal fluid. It has brought Pakistan up to global medical genetics standards, opening new avenues of hope for thousands of families.

Prof. Amjad Siraj Memon, Vice Chancellor of JSMU, pointed out that such facilities are urgently needed in the region as resources are scarce. Sindh’s public hospitals are dealing with an enormous number of patients, such as over 1,000 cases of brain and spinal injuries daily. Only 15 neurosurgeons spread over eight facilities handle these. Statistics like these call for modern diagnostic and treatment tools.

The Role of Diaspora Organisations

The establishment of the lab also reflects the critical role diaspora organisations such as APPNA play in Pakistan’s healthcare development. Their funding and expertise fill gaps in a system limited by scarce resources and infrastructure.

With this lab, Pakistan is taking bold steps to face its healthcare challenges, thus ensuring a healthier future for generations.

Netflix Fined €4.75M by Dutch Authorities Over Data Privacy Issues

The Dutch Data Protection Authority (AP) fined Netflix €4.75 million ($4.98 million) for failing to adequately protect consumer data between 2018 and 2020. The AP stated that Netflix provided insufficient information about its data processing practices, including the purposes, how data is shared with third parties, retention duration, and security measures for transmission outside Europe. AP chairman Aleid Wolfsen remarked, “A company with a billion turnover must explain quite properly to millions of customers worldwide how it is handling their data. That must be crystal clear.”

Netflix responded by highlighting its cooperation with the AP and updates to its privacy policies. A spokesperson said, “Since this investigation started more than five years ago, we have been actively engaging with the Dutch Data Protection Authority and have further developed our privacy information to be even more transparent to our members. We have also taken exception to this decision.”

While Netflix is appealing the fine, the AP emphasised the need for transparency for companies handling vast amounts of personal data. This case underlines the growing importance of clear communication and robust privacy practices in today’s digital landscape.

Mohsin Naqvi Reaffirms Commitment To Host ICC Champions Trophy 2025

why-icc-champions-trophy-2025-schedule-is-still-under-wraps

The excitement is building as Pakistan takes bold steps toward hosting the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. At the heart of this preparation is the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), led by Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who presided over the 76th Board of Governors (BoG) meeting in Islamabad this week.

All Eyes on the Champions Trophy

In the meeting, Naqvi shared encouraging updates about the much-anticipated event. The message was clear: Pakistan is fully committed to hosting the Champions Trophy on home soil. With confidence in his leadership, the BoG members stood firmly behind this vision.

“This is a matter of national honor, and we will not let it be compromised,” Naqvi said passionately. He reiterated PCB’s readiness to make the tournament a grand success, highlighting their dedication to keeping cricket apolitical and focused on the fans.

Upgrading the Game: Stadium Preparations

One of the key points of discussion was the ongoing upgrades at major cricketing venues in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi. These renovations aim to meet international standards, ensuring Pakistan shines on the global stage.

The members were pleased with the progress and praised the work being done. With these improvements, Pakistan is on track to showcase its cricketing prowess to the world.

While preparations for the Champions Trophy are underway, the Champions T20 Cup is already creating buzz at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Earlier this year, PCB successfully hosted the Champions One-Day Cup in Faisalabad, demonstrating its ability to organize top-tier events.

The Fusion Formula: A Diplomatic Solution

The road to the 2025 Champions Trophy hasn’t been without challenges. The PCB’s innovative ‘fusion formula’ gained approval from the ICC, resolving a key hurdle.

According to this arrangement, India will play its tournament matches in the UAE instead of Pakistan. In return, Pakistan will not travel to India for the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Instead, their matches, including the highly anticipated India-Pakistan clash, will be held in Sri Lanka.

This compromise ensures both nations participate in major tournaments while addressing political sensitivities.

Imam-ul-Haq Calls Out Pakistan’s Cricket Crisis

imam-ul-haq

Pakistan cricket is never short on drama, but the recent statements of Imam-ul-Haq have added a whole new layer to the conversation. In a candid interview, the 28-year-old opening batter pulled no punches as he criticized the team’s selection process and reflected on what he described as the “worst state” of Pakistan cricket in his seven-year career.

What’s Going Wrong?

Imam-ul-Haq didn’t shy away from addressing the elephant in the room—the inconsistent selection policies. According to him, favoritism and a lack of uniform criteria are at the heart of the team’s struggles.

“If one player gets 15 matches to prove himself and another with similar talent only gets three, you’re setting yourself up for trouble,” Imam explained. He believes this “liking and disliking” culture not only undermines fairness but also destroys players’ confidence.

From Confidence to Collapse

It’s no secret that Pakistan’s performances have been shaky in recent months. Imam highlighted key moments, like the shocking loss to the USA and a heart-wrenching collapse against India in a match that seemed firmly in Pakistan’s grasp.

“You get into a winning position, needing just a run-a-ball, and then lose. Moments like these kill confidence,” he said, clearly frustrated.

Imam-ul-Haq also pointed out that only victories can restore the morale of the team. “Wins are crucial. It’s the only way to stop this downward spiral,” he added.

Imam admitted he wasn’t part of the squad during the T20 World Cup but shared unsettling stories he’d heard. “I feel some things were worse than what happened in the ODI World Cup,” he revealed.

While he discussed these issues with captain Babar Azam, Imam emphasized that there’s a difference between hearing about something and experiencing it firsthand.

Imam’s criticism is a reflection of deeper issues in Pakistan cricket. However, he remains hopeful that with the right approach and a few wins under their belt, the team can turn things around.

Keshav Maharaj Ruled Out Of ODI Series Against Pakistan: A Blow for South Africa

keshav-maharaj-out-south-africa-pakistan-odis

South Africa has been dealt a tough hand just before the second ODI against Pakistan. Their star left-arm spinner, Keshav Maharaj, has been ruled out of the ongoing series due to a groin strain. It’s a major setback for the Proteas, who are already under pressure after losing the first ODI in Paarl.

Injury Woes for Maharaj

Maharaj picked up the injury during the warm-up before the first match and had to sit out. He was replaced by all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo in the Playing XI. After undergoing scans, the diagnosis confirmed a left adductor strain.

To focus on recovery, Maharaj is heading back to Durban for rehabilitation. The good news? South Africa is hopeful he’ll be fit in time for the Test series against Pakistan starting later this month.

South Africa didn’t waste time finding a replacement. Bjorn Fortuin, another left-arm spinner, has been called up for the remaining ODIs. Fortuin is a talented bowler who can bring variety to the attack, but filling Maharaj’s shoes won’t be easy. His experience and control were key to South Africa’s plans, especially on pitches that favor spin.

What’s Next for South Africa?

The Proteas now face an uphill battle. They’re already trailing 1-0 in the series, and losing Keshav Maharaj adds more pressure. The second ODI, happening today in Cape Town, is a must-win for them to keep the series alive. The third and final match will be in Johannesburg on December 21.

After the ODIs, the focus will shift to the two-match Test series. The first Test starts in Centurion on December 26, followed by the second in Cape Town on January 3. Maharaj’s fitness for these games will be closely monitored.

California Declares State of Emergency over Outbreak of Bird Flu

California Declares state of emergency over outbreak of Bird Flu

California Gov. Gavin Newson declared a state of emergency on Wednesday, over bird flu infection in cattle herds. Newsom called the measure a ‘proactive action’ after more bird flu cases were declared in Southern California dairy cows.

On the same day, the first severe illness in a person, from Louisiana, was also seen due to the bird flu. “This proclamation is a targeted action to ensure government agencies have the resources and flexibility they need to respond quickly to this outbreak,” Newsom stated.

Bird Flu in Humans

Federal health officials say that there have been 51 cases of bird flu detected in humans, mostly among people who have had close contact with dairy herds or farmed poultry. 34 of these cases were from California. However, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention says there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission of bird flu. Despite the state of emergency, the overall risk to the US public from the current outbreak remains low.

Alibaba.com Introduces Trade Assurance in Pakistan, Enabling Local SMEs to Trade with Enhanced Confidence

The 2025 Alibaba.com Pakistan Supplier Export Summit brought together more than 500 SME representatives from Sialkot

Sialkot, Pakistan, December 18, 2024 – Alibaba.com, a leading global business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce platform, today announced the launch of Trade Assurance in Pakistan, enabling local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to trade with enhanced confidence. With this launch, Pakistan joins the ranks of a select few markets where Alibaba.com has introduced this valued service for suppliers.

The launch was announced at the 2025 Alibaba.com Pakistan Supplier Export Summit, held in Sialkot, a hub of industrial excellence. At the event, Alibaba.com shared insights into the growth opportunities and emerging trends within the global apparel industry, which is projected to reach a market size of $1.79 trillion in 2024, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.81% from 2024 to 20281.

“Alibaba.com’s decision to hold the Pakistan Supplier Export Summit in Sialkot underscores the city’s industrial importance and potential,” said Ikram Ul Haq, President of the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry. “This event has brought immense value to our local businesses by connecting them with global opportunities and introducing the tools needed to succeed in international markets. Initiatives like this reflect Alibaba.com’s dedication to supporting Sialkot’s SMEs to grow and thrive on a global scale.”

Bringing Peace of Mind to Pakistani Suppliers

Global B2B trade can be fraught with challenges, including concerns over costs, product quality, shipment timelines, and more. Trade Assurance, a proprietary order protection service offered by Alibaba.com, alleviates some of these risks, providing both suppliers and buyers with confidence throughout the entire transaction process. Suppliers who opt for this service can conduct business with peace of mind, knowing that their transactions are securely safeguarded by a trusted platform. The service stipulates that the buyer makes payment at the time of purchase, with the funds held in escrow by Alibaba.com until the buyer confirms the satisfactory receipt of the order within a reasonable timeframe.

“Pakistan represents a high-potential supplier market for Alibaba.com, boasting robust production capabilities and a diverse range of product categories that capture substantial global buyer interest. To capitalize on this potential, we have introduced the Trade Assurance service in Pakistan. This service is designed to foster trust between suppliers and global buyers while streamlining transaction processes. Our goal is to enhance efficiency and unlock new business opportunities for Pakistan suppliers to support their growth and success,” said Roger Luo, Head of Southeast Asia at Alibaba.com.

Participating suppliers stand to benefit significantly from Trade Assurance, as the service not only enhances buyers’ trust in them but also allows them to build a robust online transaction history. By enhancing their online profile, suppliers can improve their ranking and visibility on Alibaba.com, ultimately leading to a wealth of future business opportunities.

“Trust is the foundation of success in international trade. When dealing with buyers from different parts of the world, ensuring that both sides feel secure is critical. Trade Assurance bridges this trust gap by offering payment protection and transparent processes, which are crucial for fostering long-term relationships. With this service, buyers feel confident placing large orders, and sellers like us can focus on delivering quality products without worrying about payment risks,” said Tayyub Hussnain, Founder of Norwich Streetwear, a Sialkot-based verified supplier on Alibaba.com specializing in custom apparel. In 2023, the company secured more than $1 million’s worth of orders through Alibaba.com.

“We are thrilled to bring Trade Assurance to Pakistan. Conducting transactions through this service will enable Pakistani SMEs to build a robust online transaction history, bolster their credit ratings, and enhance their reputation with global buyers. We believe the comprehensive order protection it offers can reduce trade barriers for SMEs, opening pathways for them to flourish in the global marketplace,” said Summer Gao, Head of Global Supply Chain Services at Alibaba.com.

Supporting Pakistani Apparel Suppliers

The 2025 Alibaba.com Pakistan Supplier Export Summit brought together more than 500 SME representatives from Sialkot to explore emerging business trends, innovative technologies and future-ready solutions poised to redefine their operations in the digital era. Recognizing Pakistan’s strong position in the apparel sector, Alibaba.com highlighted the potential for local businesses to penetrate international markets, driven by global demand for quality apparel products.

To bolster Pakistani clothing suppliers, Alibaba.com has recently introduced a suite of services tailored specifically for the apparel industry, offering tools and resources that enhance product visibility, streamline operations and facilitate connections with buyers worldwide. This strategic focus on the apparel sector aims to help Pakistani businesses maximize their growth potential and strengthen their presence in the competitive global market.

President Vladimir Putin himself has likewise pointed out that Russian scientists are almost prepared to come up with cancer vaccines. He said in February, “We are very close to making what is called the cancer vaccines and the immunomodulatory new generation drugs.”

Even though the vaccine’s formal name and cancer types it targets are still unknown, other nations are investigating comparable developments. According to Newsweek, the British government has teamed with the German biotech business BioNTech to develop personalised cancer treatments. Gintsburg went on to say that artificial neural networks might dramatically shorten the process of generating personalised vaccines, potentially lowering it to less than one hour.

In parallel, pharmaceutical giants Moderna and Merck & Co are also working on their own experimental cancer vaccines. A mid-stage clinical trial of their vaccine indicated that it could reduce the risk of melanoma recurrence or death by 50% over a three-year period.
