Water Tanker Kills Man and Pregnant Wife

A man and his pregnant wife were killed in an accident when a water tanker hit a bike in Karachi, on the main Shahra-e-Faisal road on Monday, according to police and hospital officials.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Pir Mohammed Shah of the Karachi Traffic Police said that the water truck was travelling from Model Colony to Shahra-e-Faisal without making a left turn. According to him, there were freshly placed concrete barriers on the spit, but the driver broke through them when the car’s brakes failed and struck the family on a bike.

“As a result of the water tanker accident, the couple and their newborn baby were killed,” the Traffic DIG said. He also added that the traffic police officials present at the scene caught the errant driver and seized the tanker, handing it over to the police for investigation.

Following the unfortunate tragedy, the full-term pregnant mother gave birth to a baby, however the infant did not survive, according to Korangi Senior Superintendent of Police Mohammed Tariq Nawaz. The accident happened while the husband was allegedly taking his wife to the hospital for a check-up.

The bodies of the couple and their newborn son were delivered to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), police surgeon Dr. Summaiya Syed informed Dawn.com.

Not the First Water Tanker Accident

This was, however, not the first accident of such nature in the city. According to medical records, there was a startling rise in traffic accidents in Karachi in 2024, with approximately 500 fatalities and 4,879 injuries brought on by a variety of factors, including careless driving and construction.

The city also recently enacted regulations limiting the movement of heavy trucks and tankers, permitting them to only operate from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. However, many drivers don’t seem to follow these regulations resulting in accidents.

Pakistan Customs Stops Major Drug Smuggling Attempt

Pakistan Customs successfully stopped a large drug smuggling attempt from Balochistan to Karachi. Officials launched the operation after receiving a tip-off about the transportation of narcotics. A Customs spokesperson confirmed the operation and stated that they would take strict action against those involved.

Customs officers had received intelligence regarding a car carrying drugs to Karachi. In response, the authorities instructed the Anti-Smuggling Organisation (ASO) teams stationed at RCD Highway, Northern Bypass, and Super Highway to increase surveillance and closely monitor suspicious vehicles.

At the Northern Bypass, ASO officials signalled a car with registration number BMS-188 to stop for inspection. However, the driver ignored the order and attempted to escape by steering the vehicle into a riverine area near the highway. Customs staff at the Super Highway were immediately informed and launched a coordinated search operation.

After an extensive search, officials located the abandoned vehicle. Realising that law enforcement was closing in, the driver had fled before officers could apprehend him. Despite the escape, Customs officers proceeded with a thorough inspection of the vehicle.

During the inspection, officers discovered 84.5 kilogrammes of hashish hidden inside the car. The estimated market value of the seized drugs is Rs14.2 million. Authorities took possession of both the vehicle and the drugs, ensuring they were secured as evidence.

Authorities have registered a formal case, and investigators are now working to trace the individuals responsible for the smuggling attempt.

Pakistan Customs remains committed to cracking down on drug smuggling, ensuring strict measures are in place to prevent narcotics from reaching cities. Authorities have urged citizens to report any suspicious activities to help combat smuggling and maintain law and order.

Salaried Class Paid Rs331 Billion Income Tax

Salaried Class Paid Rs331 Billion Income Tax
Salaried Class Paid Rs331 Billion Income Tax

The salaried class paid Rs331 billion income tax in the eight months of the current fiscal year—1,350% more than retailers. However, the government was still unable to seek relief from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for the marginalised segment.

During the July–February period of this fiscal year, salaried individuals paid a total of Rs120 billion in income taxes, which is 56% more than the Rs211 billion collected during the same period last fiscal year.

Last year, the salaried class paid Rs368 billion in taxes. Despite this hefty burden on the salaried people, who pay taxes on the gross income without adjusting expenditures, the government did not lessen this burden with the IMF during the recently held talks.

Read More: PM Shehbaz Orders Audit of Ramadan Relief Package 2025

In contrast to Rs331 billion income tax paid by the salaried people, the shopkeepers, primarily unregistered, contributed barely Rs23 billion on account of withholding income tax on their sales. The traders’ tax payment under section 236-H was 1,350% lower than the salaried individuals’ tax payment.

The wholesalers and distributors also paid Rs16 billion withholding tax in eight months as almost half of them were not registered with the FBR.

The Unfair Burden

The Rs331 billion income tax on the salaried class is the result of the massive unfair burden the government has put on them since last June by the reduction in slabs. The highest slab’s overall tax rate is 38.5% because the maximum 35% rate is now unjustly applied to a monthly income of Rs500,000 plus a 10% surcharge.

The tax target for March is Rs1.220 trillion, which the FBR will once more fall well short of. The FBR has a massive challenge of raising Rs704 billion this week after collecting Rs515 billion up to Sunday. The final working day before the Eid holidays is Friday.

Aramco clarifies free water bottles distributed in Ramadan were not Zam Zam

Saudi oil company Aramco issued a clarification after public commendations for offering complimentary water bottles and dates at its fuel outlets throughout Ramadan. Unlike popular perception, the company explained that the free water bottles were not Zam Zam water but plain bottled drinking water that was procured from a factory in Sheikhupura, Punjab.

The gesture, intended as a goodwill initiative, was widely appreciated across Pakistan, with many lauding Aramco’s efforts to provide comfort to travelers during the holy month. However, the misunderstanding arose when some consumers, expecting the revered Zam Zam water, noticed the bottles were labeled as “Bottled Drinking Water.”

Addressing Consumer Concerns

The explanation by Aramco followed social media chatter, with some consumers complaining of disappointment over what they saw as misleading labeling. Most called for Aramco to provide clearer and more transparent labeling to prevent similar misunderstandings in the future.

While the company’s aim was to serve convenience and hospitality during Ramadan, it has taken seriously the feedback, clarifying that no statement was made about the bottles having Zam Zam water. The incident serves to underscore the sensitivity of religious feelings and the need for accurate communication in marketing campaigns.

Aramco’s Expansion in Pakistan

Aramco’s move is in accordance with its overall drive to make a mark in Pakistan’s fuel sector. In the previous year, the company opened its first branded gas station in Lahore, close to Liberty Chowk, in partnership with Gas & Oil Pakistan Ltd. (GO). The step followed Aramco’s acquisition of 40% of GO, one of Pakistan’s top petroleum marketing firms.

This strategic alliance is intended to raise fuel quality and customer service levels in Pakistan, especially as the energy needs of the country continue to grow. Aramco’s entry into Pakistan’s fuel market is likely to bring in high-end services and improve the overall consumer experience.

Learning from the Incident

The recent controversy regarding bottled water is a lesson for foreign market companies to be sensitive to cultural and religious sentiments. Aramco’s quick action reflects its dedication to responding to consumer issues and upholding a good image.

As the company further increases its presence in Pakistan, transparency and good communication will be essential in building its relationship with the locals.

Kamran Tessori Responded to Murtaza Wahab's Statement

Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori has responded to Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab’s statement, saying that his focus during Ramadan is entirely on serving the public, especially during Sehri and Iftar. He emphasised that his commitment to community service during this month leaves no time for anything else, particularly until after Sehri.

Tessori shared that he had the privilege of hosting Iftar for the Consuls General of Saudi Arabia, Iran, Oman, Turkiye, Malaysia, Russia and Bangladesh. Additionally, he had the honour of offering Iftar to 10,000 individuals at the Governor House. He stated that while serving the public, he also gains spiritual merit and highlighted that he provides daily gifts such as residential plots, Umrah tickets, motorcycles and phones, along with distributing Sehri at various locations.

Addressing Critics

He also addressed his critics, advising them to focus on making improvements instead of being jealous of the love and support he has received from the people. Tessori stated that this Ramadan, he has shown his commitment to all citizens and that people from all backgrounds—Muhajirs, Sindhis, Punjabis, Baloch and Pashtuns – consider him a brother and a son. He urged others to win hearts through service, saying that true success lies in public service, not in being envious of popularity.

Mayor Murtaza Wahab has urged the Prime Minister of Pakistan to fulfil his promises regarding Karachi’s development and called on MQM to clarify its stance on local government powers. Wahab said he has received a response from Governor Sindh Kamran Khan Tessori and will reply soon.

During the inauguration of development projects near Machi Miani Market, Wahab emphasised that the Old City Area is the foundation of Karachi and assured that municipal issues, particularly the blocked sewerage system, were being addressed. He criticised the Governor for focusing on the Iftar and Sehri parties instead of addressing Karachi’s problems. He also called for the release of Rs100 billion that was promised for the city’s development.

Wahab further criticised MQM for its unclear stance on local governance, stating that while the party had previously supported grassroots governance, it now advocated for PIDCL to take over KMC’s responsibilities. He mentioned ongoing efforts to resolve Karachi’s water shortage and development projects in Keamari Fish Market and Lyari, adding that no obstacles in Karachi’s development would be tolerated.

Pakistan’s First PKR-Denominated Green Bond Launched To Accelerate Climate Finance

In a groundbreaking move for Pakistan’s sustainability-focused financial sector, Parwaaz Financial Services Limited (PFSL), a subsidiary of Karandaaz Pakistan, has launched the country’s first-ever PKR-denominated Green Bond under the Parwaaz Green Action Bond initiative. The bond, which is also the first ever Green Bond to be listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), aims to mobilise capital for environmentally sustainable projects and strengthen Pakistan’s green investment ecosystem.

The PKR 1 billion bond includes investment commitments from leading financial institutions—including Bank Alfalah, Bank of Khyber, Allied Bank, Pak Brunei Investment Company Ltd., Pak China Investment Company Ltd., Pak Libya Holding Company Ltd., Pak Oman Investment Company, Saudi Pak Industrial & Agricultural Investment Company Ltd., and Al Falah Insurance. The initiative reflects strong investor confidence in Pakistan’s green finance sector.

At the launch, Mr. Muhammad Aurangzeb, Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, underscored its importance: “Pakistan’s economic resilience depends on our ability to embrace sustainability in finance. The launch of this Green Bond is a testament to our commitment to fostering an investment-friendly environment for climate initiatives. This initiative not only aligns with the transformation of Pakistan’s financial sector but also paves the way for attracting green investments at scale.”

The UK has played a key role in bringing today’s Bond to market, including through specialist expertise to help structure it. PFSL received technical assistance from the UK government’s Mobilising Institutional Capital Through Listed Product Structures (MOBILIST) programme. Karandaaz Pakistan was also created with significant UK support. British High Commissioner, Jane Marriott CMG OBE, said: “This Green Bond is a brilliant example of how intelligent financial innovation can drive both private sector led economic growth and greater climate resilience. Pakistan needs $348 billion by 2030 to adapt and make the green transition, so the need to mobilise climate finance has never been more urgent. Congratulations to those who have helped to deliver today’s Bond, which is good for the economy and good for the planet.”

Karandaaz Pakistan has been at the forefront of mobilizing green finance. Syed Salim Raza, Chairperson of the Karandaaz Pakistan Board, reiterated Karandaaz’s long-term commitment to sustainability, stating, “Our vision for green finance is rooted in long-term economic resilience. This bond demonstrates that Pakistan can attract serious investment in sustainability-focused projects while ensuring that financial growth does not come at the cost of environmental degradation. The success of this initiative will pave the way for a more robust green financing ecosystem in the country.”

Speaking at the launch, Waqas ul Hasan, CEO of Karandaaz Pakistan, described the bond as “not just a milestone for Karandaaz and Parwaaz Financial Services but a defining moment for the entire financial sector of Pakistan. Karandaaz is proud to lead the way in mobilizing capital for green investments, ensuring financial instruments work for both economic progress and environmental sustainability. We will continue to strive for instruments which enable capital allocation to development outcomes of the country”

The bond builds upon PFSL’s existing track record in green financing. Mr. Javed Iqbal, CEO of PFSL, highlighted that “This bond is the result of years of strategic effort to create financial instruments that generate measurable environmental and economic impact. By directing capital into renewable energy and clean transportation, we are not only financing infrastructure but also laying the foundation for Pakistan’s green transition.”

Sindh Announces Holiday on April 4 to Honour Zulfikar Ali Bhutto

Sindh Announces Holiday on April 4 to Honour Zulfikar Ali Bhutto

The Sindh government has declared April 4 a public holiday to mark the death anniversary of former Prime Minister and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) founder Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

A notification from the provincial government confirmed that all government offices, autonomous bodies and educational institutions under its control will remain closed on the day.

This holiday follows the Eid ul Fitr holidays, which will end on April 2 in Sindh. The move reflects the province’s tradition of honouring Bhutto’s contributions to Pakistan.

Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari awarded Nishan-e-Pakistan, the country’s highest civilian honour, to Zulfikar Ali Bhutto yesterday. The ceremony took place at Aiwan-i-Sadr, where Bhutto’s daughter, Sanam Bhutto, accepted the award on his behalf.

Zulfikar Ali Bhutto played a key role in shaping Pakistan’s politics. He served as prime minister from 1973 to 1977 and introduced major reforms in foreign policy and the economy. He also strengthened Pakistan’s nuclear programme and led the creation of the country’s first unanimous constitution in 1973.

However, his tenure ended when General Zia-ul-Haq overthrew his government in a military coup. A controversial trial led to Bhutto’s death sentence, and he was executed on April 4, 1979. Many debates over the trial’s fairness continue.

Each year, PPP leaders, workers and supporters gather at his mausoleum in Garhi Khuda Bakhsh to pay tribute. This year’s event will include party meetings, public addresses and a remembrance ceremony.

Bhutto’s influence remains strong in Pakistan’s politics, with his party still playing a key role. The public holiday in Sindh serves as a reminder of his legacy and lasting impact.

Pakistan and Bangladesh Drop ODIs for T20Is in Upcoming Series

Pakistan and Bangladesh decided to remove One Day Internationals (ODIs) from their upcoming bilateral series in May and July. Instead, they will play Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) to prepare for the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) Director of Media and Communications, Sami Ul Hasan, confirmed the change on Sunday. He stated that both teams want to focus on T20 cricket ahead of 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup, which will take place in India and Sri Lanka in February.

Bangladesh was originally set to tour Pakistan in May for three ODIs and three T20Is under the Future Tours Programme (FTP). However, Pakistan and Bangladesh boards agreed to replace the ODIs with two additional T20Is, making it a five-match T20I series.

Similarly, Pakistan was scheduled to visit Bangladesh in July for three ODIs, which were not part of the FTP. These matches will also be replaced with a three-match T20I series.

Before the T20 World Cup, both teams will also compete in the Asia Cup in India this September. The tournament will be played in the T20 format.

Following these international commitments, Pakistan’s players will shift their focus to the 10th edition of the PSL. The tournament will take place from 11 April to 18 May, providing another platform for players to prepare for the T20 World Cup.

This shift in scheduling highlights Pakistan and Bangladesh teams’ commitment to strengthening their T20 performances ahead of the global event.

In the viral video, a sweeper named Abid caught stitching wounds and dressing injuries, due to the absence of qualified medical staff.

Following the video’s circulation, citizens expressed outrage over the lack of medicines and the absence of emergency staff at Pattoki Hospital. They claim that despite receiving substantial funds, the hospital remains under-equipped and mismanaged, raising serious concerns about corruption.

The Punjab government is now facing pressure to address the issue. Residents have urged Chief Minister Punjab to take immediate notice and hold those responsible accountable after reviewing the viral video.

Meanwhile, another case of medical negligence has surfaced in Lahore. In a separate incident, an infant girl suffered severe burns due to alleged negligence at Gangaram Hospital. The baby was placed in an incubator that malfunctioned, causing a temperature rise and resulting in burns.

According to the infant’s father, Rafaqat Ali, the hospital staff was uncooperative and rude when he questioned them about the incident. He alleged that they even expelled him from the nursery. He has appealed to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for justice and an investigation into the incident.

It is important to note that in 2023, a similar incident occurred when an infant died of burns after being exposed to overheating in an incubator at Lahore’s Children’s Hospital. The infant suffered burns due to severe negligence by doctors, nurses, and medical staff.

How to Pray Tahajjud? An Important Guide

How to Pray Tahajjud? An Important Guide
How to Pray Tahajjud? An Important Guide

Tahajjud is one of the most rewarding voluntary prayers in Islam. This special night prayer holds immense significance in a Muslim’s spiritual journey. Tahajjud is performed after Isha and before Fajr in the last third of the night. However, most people often get confused about how to pray tahajjud.

The practice of waking up in the stillness of the night to pray brings believers closer to Allah and provides a unique opportunity to seek His mercy and guidance. Though Tahajjud is not obligatory it is an invite from the Almighty. Hence, many devoted Muslims try to incorporate it into their daily lives as a form of worship. The most important thing is that at this time, the door of repentance is wide open.

However, many believers often don’t know how to pray Tahajjud and overlook the importance of this night prayer. Little do they know what they are missing out on.

The Importance of Tahajjud Prayer

The Tahajjud prayer is highly emphasised in Islamic teachings. This prayer is believed to be the most virtuous among the Nafl prayers as it is part of the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). It is mentioned in the Quran and reinforced by numerous hadiths of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Reference From Quran:

Translation: ” And rise at ‘the last’ part of the night, offering additional prayers, so your Lord may raise you to a station of praise.(Quran, 17:79)

Reference From Hadith:

Abu Hurayra (Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Messenger of Allah, our beloved Prophet (PBUH) said,

“Our Lord (glorified and exalted be He) descends each night to the earth’s sky when there remains the final third of the night, and He says: ‘Who is saying a prayer to Me that I may answer it? Who is asking something of Me that I may give it him? Who is asking forgiveness of Me that I may forgive him?’” [Bukhari (also by Muslim, Malik, at-Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud)]

The hadith alone shows how important this phase of the night is for the believer. It is even advised by all the scholars that if one wishes to get anything, they must then ask it in Tahajjud. Otherwise, they don’t want it bad enough.

How To Pray Tahajjud: The Proper Methodology

Tahajjud is supposed to be prayed minimum of 2 Raka’ats each. The Sunnah is to pray up to 8 Raka’ats in total with 2 sets each. However, a believer can pray as many as they want until the fajr prayer given that there are at least two rak’ahs with one salutation (salam) for every two rak’ahs.

Before beginning, one must prepare themselves by performing Wudu (ablution), then find a quiet and clean space for prayer.

Here are the step-by-step instructions on how to pray Tahajjud:

1. The Sunnah Tahajjud prayer starts with reciting the Niyyah (Intention) to pray. This Niyyah can be in the same way as the obligatory prayer or one can recite:

                           ” أُصَلِّي سُنَّةَ التَهَجُّد رَكعَتَينِ لِلَّهِ تَعَالَى “

Translation: I intend to pray the Sunnah prayer of Tahajjud two raka’at for Allah s.w.t.

2. Once you have made your Niyyah, give the Takbir (Allahu-akbar) and perform two Raka’at prayers.

3. End the prayer after two Raka’at with salam.

4. Add your own prayers (dua) after you’ve completed the number of Raka’ats you set out to pray. Make sure that they are sincere, respectful and done in complete devotion to Allah. This is the ideal moment to be as vulnerable as possible.

5. Once the Tahajjud prayer is complete, it must be ended with a final Witr Salah. The Witr Prayer is the last prayer of the night.

Extra: Dua For Tahajjud

As narrated by Ibn `Abbas (R.A): When the Prophet (ﷺ) got up at night to offer the Tahajjud prayer, he used to say:

Translation:Oh Allah, to You be praise, You are the light of the heavens and the earth, and everyone therein. To You be praise; You are the holder of the heavens and the earth, and everyone therein. To You be praise; You are True; Your promise is true; Paradise is true; Hell is true; the Hour is true; the Prophets are true and Muhammad is true. To You have I submitted; in You I put my trust and in You I have believed. To You I turn in repentance; by Your help I argue; to You I refer my case; so, forgive me for my past and future sins, what I have done in secret and what I have done openly. You are the One Who brings forward and puts back. None has the right to be worshipped but You, and there is none who has the right to be worshipped other than You.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1120)

Tahajjud in Ramadan

During Ramadan, the significance of Tahajjud increases manifold. Many Muslims observe it in the form of Qiyam-ul-Layl or Tarawih. Here is why Tahajjud is very important to be prayed in Ramadan.

  1. Laylatul Qadr: Praying Tahajjud during the last ten nights of Ramadan holds special blessings as it may coincide with Laylatul Qadr, a night better than a thousand months (Quran 97:3).
  2. Extra Rewards: Since deeds are multiplied in Ramadan, praying Tahajjud becomes even more rewarding.
  3. A Habit for the Whole Year: Ramadan trains Muslims to engage in extra prayers, and those who regularly pray Tahajjud during this month can continue even after Ramadan ends.

Tahajjud Time in Karachi

In Karachi, you can pray Tahajjud between 9:01 PM and 5:11 AM (preferably the latter). In Islamic tradition, the last third of the night is from approximately 2.30 AM to dawn, which is why this time is most recommended.

Pak vs New Zealand: NZ Takes 3-1 Series Lead

New Zealand dealt a crushing blow to Pakistan’s aspirations of levelling their T20 series, defeating them by 115 runs in the fourth game at Mount Maunganui. The Black Caps’ dominant performance in Pak vs New Zealand gave them an unbeatable 3-1 lead in the five-match series. However, there is one match remaining to be played.

New Zealand’s batting was on fire, spearheaded by Finn Allen’s 50 from 20 balls and Tim Seifert’s 44 off 22 balls. Their 59-run partnership in the opening stand put the innings on the right trajectory. Captain Michael Bracewell signed off in style, clubbing 46 not out off 26 balls to steer his side towards a strong 220-6.

Pakistan’s Batting Collapse

Pakistan’s pace attack could not hold back the hosts, though Haris Rauf did better with 3-27. The target the Kiwis left was impossible right from the beginning.

Pakistan’s collapse with the bat was nothing less than catastrophic in the Pak vs New Zealand match. The visitors were reduced to 9-3 within two overs, Jacob Duffy destroying by taking two wickets in the first over. Zak Foulkes then joined the wreckage by taking three wickets for 25 runs, reducing Pakistan to tatters at 56-8.

The lone two Pakistani batsmen who demonstrated any sort of resilience were Abdul Samad and Irfan Khan. Samad’s heroic unbeaten 44 prevented Pakistan from registering their lowest-ever T20 score. Irfan Khan scored 24, but the rest of the batting order collapsed, being unable to read the movement and turn coaxed by New Zealand bowlers.

Record-Breaking Defeat

Pakistan’s 105 all-out in the 17th over recorded their largest T20 loss by runs against any country, beating a 95-run defeat against New Zealand in Wellington nine years ago.

New Zealand’s triumph was thanks mostly to their accurate seam attack, which flourished under the floodlights. Even leg-spinner Ish Sodhi was able to turn the ball sharply, adding to Pakistan’s difficulty in the chase.

Talking after the match, Pakistan captain Ali Agha conceded the team had been comprehensively outplayed. “We have to give them credit, they bowled very well and they outplayed us. It was swinging and turning too. It did a lot in the second innings but we are an international team and we have to do better.”

With the last match approaching in Wellington, Pakistan is in for a tough fight to regain some dignity in a series that has already gone out of their hands.
