The federal government has decided to reduce electricity prices, by proposing a reduction of Rs2 per unit for the second quarter of the 2024-25 fiscal year. The adjustment will hopefully be implemented in March and is expected to provide consumers with approximate relief of above Rs52 billion.
The power distribution companies have submitted quarterly tariff revision applications to the NEPRA.
The regulator will hold a public hearing on the proposal on February 12
In case of approval, the reduction will be applied to electricity bills for March, April and May.
The Lifeline service customers will not benefit from the price reduction. K-Electric customers will be included in the adjustment.
Due to inflation and instability in the economy, the proposed reduction aims to ease the financial burden on consumers.
Nepra will make the final decision, determining if the adjustments meet the economic and energy policy objectives.
If approved, the revised rates will be implemented in the coming months, affecting millions of electricity consumers across Pakistan.

One person died and thousands of others are under evacuation orders in Australia’s north Queensland state after heavy rain caused severe floods on Sunday.
Flooding has affected large areas of the North Queensland coast since Friday, with Ingham and the nearby city of Townsville facing significant damage. Residents in low-lying coastal areas have been advised to evacuate immediately.
North Queensland is home to significant zinc reserves, along with large deposits of silver, lead, copper and iron ore. Townsville serves as a key processing hub for the region’s base metals. In 2019, severe flooding in the area halted rail shipments of lead and zinc concentrates and caused extensive property damage.
“Residents in low-lying areas should collect their evacuation kit and move to a safe place on higher ground. This situation may pose a threat to life and property,” regional emergency management authorities said on Sunday morning.

On Sunday, at least 56 people were killed and 158 injured when a shell struck a crowded vegetable market in Omdurman, Sudan’s Health Ministry confirmed.
The attack, blamed on the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has been defined as one of the deadliest in recent weeks and has further exacerbated the humanitarian crises in the war-ravaged country.
Sudan’s Minister of Culture and government spokesperson, Khalid al-Aleisir strongly condemned the attack, pointing out that many of the victims were women and children. “This criminal act adds to the bloody record of this militia,” he stated. “It constitutes a blatant violation of international humanitarian law.”
According to the eyewitnesses, the shelling originated from the western Omdurman, RSF-controlled area and was accompanied by drone strikes.
“The shells fell in the middle of the vegetable market, that’s why there are so many victims and wounded,” one survivor told AFP. Another resident described the constant bombardment, saying rockets and artillery shells rained down on multiple streets simultaneously.
Medical staff at the nearby Al Nao Hospital struggled to manage many patients. A hospital volunteer said, “We are in dire need of shrouds, blood donors and stretchers to transport the wounded.”
According to the local Emergency Response Room (ERR), in another incident in Khartoum, two civilians were killed and dozens injured in airstrikes in an area controlled by the RSF.
The violence occurred just a day after RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo vowed to retake Khartoum from the army. “We expelled them before, and we will expel them again,” he said in a rare video message.

Saudi Arabia’s new airline, Flyadeal, has officially started its flight operations to Pakistan.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has launched the Agriculture Tubewell Solarisation project through a balloting procedure in Lahore.
Under the initiative, The Punjab Government will offer a subsidy of worth five lakh rupees for a 10-kilowatt solar installation, 7.5 lakh rupees for a 15-kilowatt system and 10 lakh rupees for a 20-kilowatt solar system.
In the first phase, the selection of eight thousand tube wells from across the province will be made through balloting for conversion to solar energy.
At the event, Maryam Nawaz instructed that the solarisation process in the first phase be concluded by June of this year.
CM Punjab also highlighted other current projects, including the Farmer’s Card, Agricultural mechanisation and internships, which aim to improve the lives of farmers. She also highlighted that the solarisation project would open a new chapter for agricultural growth in Punjab and provide a substantial uplift to the sector.

During an operation in the Mangocher area of Balochistan’s Kalat district, eighteen soldiers were martyred. This happened during the night of January 31 and February 1, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed on Saturday.
According to the military media wing, last night terrorists made an attempt to establish illegal roadblocks in the region, aiming to disrupt the peaceful environment in Pakistan. Following the orders of “inimical and hostile forces”, the attackers targeted innocent civilians.
Security forces and law enforcement agencies launched an immediate counter-operation by responding swiftly to the condition. The forces successfully eliminated the threat, killing 12 terrorists and ensuring the safety of the local community.
“However, during the conduct of operations, eighteen brave sons of soil, having fought gallantly, made the ultimate sacrifice and embraced shahadat,” the statement read, emphasising the bravery of soldiers who embraced martyrdom.
To find and capture the remaining accomplices and enablers, security forces launched extensive sanitisation efforts in the area after the operation.
The ISPR emphasised that, alongside the nation, Pakistan’s security forces are dedicated to preventing any efforts to undermine the peace, stability and progress of Balochistan, stating that “sacrifices of our brave soldiers further strengthen our resolve.”

Following the mid-air collision of a passenger plane and a military helicopter in Washington earlier this week authorities reported that a medical jet carrying six Mexican nationals crashed into a busy Philadelphia neighbourhood on Friday causing yet another aviation disaster in the United States.
According to the FAA the aircraft involved was an American-French business jet the Learjet 55 that had just departed Northeast Philadelphia Airport and was travelling to Branson Missouri.
She and her mother along with the flight and medical teams that accompanied them were killed in the crash according to the childrens hospital that treated the girl AFP reported.
“The patient had received care from Shriners Children’s Philadelphia and was being transported back to her home country in Mexico on a contracted air ambulance when the crash happened,” said Mel Bower, a spokesman for Shriners Children’s.
Confirmation about Casualties
All six onboard were Mexican citizens according to a statement from country’s foreign ministry.
“The airline company confirmed to the consulate that six people of Mexican nationality were travelling on the aircraft,” the ministry wrote on X.
In a statement to US media the operator Jet Rescue Air Ambulance confirmed that there were two passengers and four crew members on the flight, adding, “At this time, we cannot confirm any survivors.”
Emergency workers gathered in large numbers at the scene, which was located outside Roosevelt Mall, a strip mall in Northeast Philadelphia featuring stores and food vendors.
In a statement posted on his Truth Social platform on Friday US President Donald Trump said he was sad to see more souls lost in the Philadelphia tragedy.
He praised first responders, adding, “God Bless you all.”
Witnesses told local media stations about seeing body parts in or near the wreckage and Mike Driscol,l a member of the Philadelphia City Council voiced concern that people on the ground or residents might have been killed. “It doesn’t look good. And it’s a sad situation here,” he told CNN.
The FAA said it was launching an investigation with the National Transportation Safety Board.

A women’s football match in Joypurhat, Bangladesh, was cancelled after protests by students from a religious school led to vandalism at the venue.

Meta is taking strict action against employees responsible for leaking internal discussions after private remarks from CEO Mark Zuckerberg were made public. During a company meeting on Thursday, Zuckerberg expressed frustration over the frequent leaks of internal conversations, admitting, “We try to be really open and then everything I say leaks. Karachi-bound Shalimar Express met with an accident near Shahdara, Lahore, as three of its bogies derailed, causing major disruptions in train operations. Railway officials confirmed that engineering teams were dispatched immediately to the site to begin relief operations.

Lahore has taken a major step towards eco-friendly public transport with the launch of Punjab’s first fully electric bus service. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif inaugurated the service, which aims to provide a modern, safe and efficient commuting experience.

Social worker Ramazan Chhipa has provided shelter, food and clothing to an American woman found wandering in distress in Karachi. “We gave her clothes and food. The Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore is undergoing a major expansion, with a new terminal set to be completed by September 2026, according to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Express News reported. This expansion aims to enhance passenger experience, reduce congestion and improve airport efficiency.
The new terminal will introduce key upgrades, including a sixfold increase in immigration counters and a threefold expansion in baggage handling capacity. Dr Tauqeer Iqbal, the project lead at CAA, highlighted the upcoming improvements: departure immigration counters will increase from 10 to 64, while arrival counters will go from 18 to 80. Additionally, the number of check-in counters, security checks and baggage conveyor belts will also be significantly expanded.
Once operational, the terminal will accommodate over 12 million passengers annually, addressing long wait times and easing congestion. Currently, 5 to 5.5 million passengers travel through the airport each year, with 48 to 55 daily flights. With international travel restrictions lifted, flights to Europe and the UK are expected to increase, further boosting passenger traffic.
The existing terminal will primarily handle international flights, while the new terminal will cater to domestic passengers, with some counters allocated for international departures and arrivals. Passengers can look forward to modern facilities, including better parking, easier access to departure areas and improved boarding bridges. The project is progressing round-the-clock to meet future travel demands and enhance overall passenger convenience.

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has rejected a proposed tax amnesty that would allow individuals to buy high-value properties, flats or housing units without disclosing their source of income. The tax authority asserted that individuals must meet eligibility criteria by declaring their income before acquiring assets.
In a National Assembly Sub-Committee on Finance and Revenues meeting led by MNA Bilal Azhar Kiani, Hassan Bakhshi from the Association of Builders and Developers of Pakistan (Abad) presented proposals for the Tax Laws Amendment Bill 2024. Abad proposed allowing non-filers to purchase properties worth up to Rs25 million, reducing their initial demand of Rs50 million. However, FBR stood firm against the proposal.
The FBR’s Member Tax Policy clarified that tax amnesty could not be granted. Under the proposed amendment bill, only properties valued below Rs10 million can be purchased without additional requirements. Buyers of properties exceeding Rs10 million must prove their declared worth in previous tax returns. To facilitate this, FBR plans to launch an app for voluntary return amendments, allowing buyers to meet the required eligibility.
The sub-committee has yet to finalise its recommendations and will reconvene on Friday (today) to develop a proposal for the NA Standing Committee on Finance.
