Harbhajan Singh Rejects Claims Of ICC Favoring India In T20 World Cup

harbhajan-singh-icc-india-t20-world-cup-india-pakistan-champions-trophy-2025

Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has hit back at Michael Vaughan’s accusations that the International Cricket Council (ICC) favoured India during the T20 World Cup 2024. Vaughan had claimed that India received preferential treatment by having their semi-final match scheduled in Guyana instead of Trinidad.

Vaughan’s Accusations

Michael Vaughan took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice his concerns before the first semi-final between Afghanistan and South Africa, stating, “Surely this Semi should have been the Guyana one .. but because the whole event is geared towards India it’s so unfair on others.”

He argued that India had an advantage because they were informed in advance that they would play their semi-final in Guyana, regardless of their position in the Super 8 group.

After the match between India and England, Vaughan stated that “Guyana has been a lovely venue pick for India,” hinting at India benefitting from playing in spin-friendly conditions in Guyana.

Harbhajan Singh’s Response

Harbhajan Singh did not take kindly to Vaughan’s comments. Following India’s 68-run victory over England in the second semi-final at the Providence Stadium in Guyana, Harbhajan responded to Vaughan’s insinuations.

The former spinner did not mince his words and asked Vaughan to ‘stop being silly,’ urging him to accept the fact that England lost fair and square.

“What makes you think Guyana was a good venue for India?” Harbhajan replied. “Both teams played on the same venue. England won the toss, that was an advantage. Stop being silly. England was outplayed by India in all departments. Accept the fact and Move on.”

Despite Vaughan’s claims, Harbhajan pointed out that both teams faced the same conditions. England winning the toss was a significant advantage, but India’s comprehensive performance across all departments was the key to their victory.

Indian fans and former players rallied behind Harbhajan, supporting his stance against Vaughan’s comments. India now moves on to the T20 World Cup 2024 final against South Africa, set to be played at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on June 29, 2024.

LHC Backs CCP As Mezan Beverages Face Trouble

If you’re a fan of local energy drinks, we have some good news and some bad news. The good news is, that Mezan is coming out with another exciting drink, “Storm”. The unfortunate news is that they got sued by Pepsi Co Inc. It seems Pepsi and Mezan are head-to-head in an ongoing battle for their energy drinks.

Mezan Fights Allegations In Court

On June 28, 2024, the Lahore High Court dismissed a writ petition filed by Mezan Beverages Pvt. Ltd against the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP). And if you don’t know already, a writ petition enforces your rights. This petition was in response to a show-cause notice issued by the CCP regarding alleged deceptive marketing practices.

The issue began when Pepsi Co Inc. complained under section 37(2) of the Act. They claimed that Mezan was copying the packaging of Pepsi’s energy drink ‘Sting’ for its own product ‘Storm’. Following this complaint, the CCP conducted an inquiry and recommended a show-cause notice to Mezan Beverages.

In response, Mezan Beverages filed a writ petition. They did so to challenge the CCP’s inquiry process. Moreover, the issuance of the show-cause notice. In August 2021, the Lahore High Court temporarily suspended the show-cause notice, halting the CCP’s proceedings.

However, after a detailed hearing, the Lahore High Court upheld the Supreme Court of Pakistan’s decision in ‘CCP v. Dalda Foods Ltd’, which supported the statutory powers of the CCP to initiate inquiries and gather information.

It is vital to share that the court clarified the distinct jurisdictions of the CCP and the Intellectual Property Organization of Pakistan (IPO). The CCP deals with competition law, while the IPO focuses on intellectual property laws. Both bodies have separate regulatory frameworks and mandates. The IPO Act specifically excludes the competition law from its schedule. This helps indicate that the legislature intended for the CCP to have jurisdiction over deceptive marketing practices.

This ruling highlights the importance of maintaining distinct regulatory bodies for different legal domains and supports the CCP’s role in promoting fair competition in Pakistan.

The Story Behind South Africa’s ‘Chokers’ Tag In Cricket

the-story-behind-south-africa-chokers-tag

South Africa defied their “chokers” tag by defeating Afghanistan in the first semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2024. This victory marks the first time the Proteas have qualified for an ICC World Cup final, shedding a weighty label that has haunted them since their return to international cricket in 1992. But many young fans wonder why they are called “chokers,” here is how it all began.

The Origins of “Chokers” Tag

Despite producing legends such as Allan Donald, Lance Klusener, AB de Villiers, Shaun Pollock, Jacques Kallis, and Dale Steyn, the Proteas have frequently faltered at crucial moments. Their sole triumph was the 1998 Champions Trophy (called the ICC KnockOut Trophy back then).

This reputation as ‘chokers’ stems from multiple failures to cross the finish line, particularly in the knockout stages of global events. While some of these setbacks can be attributed to bad luck, many have resulted from their own mistakes. Here is a list of matches that contributed to South Africa’s ‘chokers’ tag:

1992 World Cup Semi-final: Rain and Misfortune

South Africa’s bad luck began in the 1992 World Cup semi-final. Chasing 253 in 45 overs against England, they needed 22 runs from the last 13 balls. However, a rain delay reduced their target to an impossible 22 off one ball, ending their campaign in a highly controversial manner.

the-story-behind-south-africa-chokers-tag

1999 World Cup Semi-final: A Heartbreaking Tie

The 1999 semi-final against Australia is one of the most memorable ODIs ever. Chasing 214, South Africa needed just one run off four balls with one wicket in hand. A mix-up between Lance Klusener and Allan Donald resulted in a run-out with the scores tied, sending Australia to the final based on their superior performance in the group stage.

2003 World Cup: A Costly Miscalculation

In 2003, South Africa misread the Duckworth-Lewis calculations in their rain-affected match against Sri Lanka. Believing they had reached the winning score, Mark Boucher blocked the final ball before the rain resumed, leaving the scores tied and knocking South Africa out in the group stage.

2011 World Cup Quarter-final: A Sudden Collapse

In 2011, South Africa faced New Zealand in the quarter-final. Chasing 222, they were well-positioned at 121/3 before a sudden collapse saw them crumble to 172 all out, following a series of run-outs and pressure from the Kiwis.

2015 World Cup Semi-final: Elliott’s Last-Gasp Heroics

The 2015 semi-final against New Zealand saw South Africa post a formidable 281/5 in a rain-shortened match. Despite being in control with New Zealand at 149/4, a brilliant partnership between Grant Elliott and Corey Anderson turned the tide. With 12 to defend off the last over, Dale Steyn brought the equation to 5 off 2, however, Elliott hit a massive six to seal South Africa’s fate.

2023 World Cup Semi-final: Another Close Call

In the 2023 semi-final against Australia, South Africa struggled to 212 after a shaky start courtesy of David Miller’s gutsy century. Despite reducing Australia to 137/5, the Proteas couldn’t finish the job, with Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins guiding Australia to victory with an unbeaten 20-run stand.

Breaking the Curse

Fast forward to 2024, South Africa’s victory over Afghanistan signifies a new chapter. This win not only propels them to their first ICC World Cup final but also offers a chance to rewrite their legacy. The journey hasn’t been easy, but the Proteas have shown resilience and determination to overcome their past.

As South Africa prepares for the T20 World Cup final, fans hope this is just the beginning of a new era. With the “chokers” tag finally behind them, the Proteas are poised to take on the world and aim for T20 World Cup glory.

Virat Kohli’s Struggles Continue: Critics Question His Place In Team

virat-kohli

India’s dominant run in the T20 World Cup 2024 continued with a victory over England in the semi-final. However, their star player Virat Kohli extended his poor run of form in the tournament. The 35-year-old managed only nine runs before being bowled by Reece Topley, marking the fifth time he has failed to score double digits in this World Cup.

A Rare Slump for Virat Kohli

Kohli’s performance in this tournament has been surprisingly lacklustre. In seven innings, he has failed to score a single fifty, accumulating just 75 runs at a strike rate of 100. This is uncharacteristic for Virat Kohli, who boasts over 1100 runs in T20 World Cup history and has won two Player of the Tournament awards.

Notably, this is Kohli’s first failure in a T20 World Cup semi-final, contrasting sharply with his previous heroic performances against South Africa in 2014, West Indies in 2016, and England in 2022. He scored an unbeaten 72 off 44 in 2014, an unbeaten 89 off 47 in 2016, and 50 off 40 in 2022.

Criticism and Support

Fans and former cricketers alike are criticizing Kohli’s performance. Former India coach Ravi Shastri expressed his dissatisfaction, suggesting that Kohli is out of form and trying to play shots that are not natural to him.

“This is not Virat Kohli’s game. He should play according to situations and play his natural game. Then he has the capability to score quickly and catch up at the last. He is trying to manufacture shots. This is what you do when you are not in form,” Shastri told Star Sports.

Meanwhile, renowned commentator Harsha Bhogle asked fans to ‘show class’ while criticising a player. He also urged fans to show support for Kohli and expressed hope that the star batter can produce a match-winning knock in the final.

Fan Reactions

Fans have mixed reactions to Kohli’s slump. Some suggest he should bat at No.3 if India qualifies for the final, while others think it might be time for him to retire from T20 cricket.

Here are a few fan reactions:

Rohit Sharma Backs Virat Kohli

Despite the criticism, Indian captain Rohit Sharma has expressed confidence in Kohli, believing that he might be saving his best for the final.

“Virat is a quality player. Any player can go through that. We understand his class. When you have played for 15 years, form is never a problem. He’s probably saving it for the final,” Sharma remarked.

As India prepares for the T20 World Cup final, all eyes will be on Kohli to see if he can turn his form around and deliver when it matters most.

MSME Day 2024: Alibaba.com Commits to Scaling AI Tools for MSMEs

Strategic plans for a diverse supplier network and enhanced trade opportunities unveiled

PAKISTAN, June 27, 2024 – Alibaba.com, a leading platform for global business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce and a unit of Alibaba International Digital Commerce Group, today honored businesses in their pursuit of success and global growth ahead of Micro-, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise (MSME) Day on June 27. Reaffirming its dedication to supporting MSMEs, Alibaba.com said it has been rolling out artificial intelligence (AI) tools for global suppliers, which have so far attracted adoption by around 30,000 businesses on its platform.

This year’s MSME Day marks the seventh anniversary of the United Nations’ designation to recognize the vital role played by MSMEs in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the contributions of MSMEs to the global economy. On this meaningful occasion, Kuo Zhang, President of Alibaba.com, participated in a panel discussion on the topic of global trade during the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) bi-annual Global Review of Aid for Trade. Together with four MSMEs from Ethiopia, Vietnam, Italy and India, Zhang also joined a session held by the United Nations International Trade Centre (ITC) to celebrate MSME Day.

From left to right: Sieu To, Deputy Managing Director of Hanh Sanh Co., Ltd; Nupur Goyal Monga, CEO of Pinkweave, India; Maria Francesca Aceti, CEO of Deltha Pharma SRL, Italy in a session moderated by James Howe (right)

Emphasizing the importance of ensuring that no MSMEs in underdeveloped countries are left behind in the era of AI, Zhang mentioned that among the top 20 countries making the most frequent use of Alibaba.com’s AI tools, approximately 10 are developing countries.

Global MSME sentiment towards AI

“As a member of the private sector, we are honored to have worked alongside international agencies such as ITC and supported MSMEs worldwide over the past 25 years,” said Zhang. “As we promote wider adoption of our AI tools amongst MSMEs, we also hope to expand our global supplier base to cover 100,000 suppliers in the next three years. In a nutshell, we are building a global supply chain by and for MSMEs leveraging AI.”

MSMEs Embrace the Power of AI

A recent survey conducted by Alibaba.com of MSMEs that utilize its platform showed that they are regularly seeking out innovative solutions and offerings like AI. In fact, 25%-30% of the MSMEs surveyed use AI on a daily basis.

On Alibaba.com alone, approximately 30,000 MSMEs globally are using the platform’s AI tools. As a result of leveraging these tools, the companies surveyed saw a 37% increase in product exposure, creating greater opportunity for new business deals and growth. Additionally, those MSMEs surveyed that are already utilizing Alibaba.com’s AI tools are furthering their businesses through AI’s expertise, as they have collectively accepted 70% of the optimization suggestions from the tools.

“Using AI has helped put my Alibaba.com store on autopilot and saved us a lot of time since it’s just me and one employee managing our business,” said Sieu To, Deputy Managing Director of Hanh Sanh Co., Ltd, a Vietnam-based electric fan company. “For many business owners who are new to e-commerce, I think AI tools will draw them closer to the platform.”

MSMEs Have Growing Access to Global Suppliers

In addition to a growing suite of innovative solutions to support their businesses, MSMEs on Alibaba.com can diversify their product sources by connecting with suppliers with specific industry and product focuses. These key global digital supply chain clusters include the following:

  • In Northeast Asia, buyers can connect with natural ingredient skin care suppliers out of Korea and partner with home furniture and camera, photo and accessory manufacturers in Japan.
  • In Southeast Asia, Vietnam is the supplier hub for seasoning and condiments, as well as home and outdoor furniture. Buyers can also seek out expert suppliers in India and Pakistan for loose gemstones and horse racing gear.
  • In West Asia and Europe, carpets, men’s clothing and construction and building machinery suppliers can be found in Türkiye. Buyers are able to tap into suppliers in Germany for industrial machinery and suppliers of wine, textile machinery and women’s apparel from Italy.

“As one of the first Italian businesses on Alibaba.com’s platform, I have always had faith in our quality Italian supplements products. Alibaba.com has helped me expand my business beyond Europe into markets like China, Vietnam, Bangladesh and Ghana,” said Maria Francesca Aceti, CEO of Deltha Pharma.

Alibaba.com Expands Supplier Support in Developing Countries

As Alibaba.com seeks to expand its supplier base, it is stepping up its efforts to onboard suppliers in developing countries. Of note, Alibaba.com is setting out to help 100 MSMEs across Africa establish a presence on its platform to sell their products globally. Additionally, of the 500 events and seminars Alibaba.com is rolling out this fiscal year (April 2024 to March 2025) for global suppliers, about 300 are set to be held in developing nations.

“Starting with brick-and-mortar and transitioning to e-commerce has been a strategic journey for my business,” said Dagmawit Abebe, owner of Ethiopian coffee brand Kedemt Coffee. “Leveraging e-commerce platforms like Alibaba.com has been crucial in overcoming local market challenges and expanding our reach.”

Alibaba.com connects more global MSMEs now than ever before, serving more than 48 million buyers and more than 200,000 suppliers on its platform worldwide. Alibaba.com will continue to place MSMEs at the forefront through innovation and new solutions focused on simplifying global sourcing and selling.

Five Batters Who Retired Too Soon: A Look at What Could Have Been

five-batters-retired-too-soon-featuring-jonathan-trott

Afghanistan cricket team shocked the world by reaching their first-ever semi-final in the T20 World Cup 2024 under the coaching of former England batter Jonathan Trott. But who is Trott? The same Trott, who went viral for signalling Afghan players to slow the game down against Bangladesh, prompting Gulbadin Naib to fake an injury.

Well, some players leave a lasting legacy with their extraordinary performances and long careers, like the great Sachin Tendulkar or Brian Lara.

However, there are also those who, despite showing immense promise, have their careers cut short for various reasons, like Mohammad Waseem and Trott. Whether due to health issues, personal struggles, or team dynamics, these players often leave fans wondering what could have been.

Here, we explore five such batters whose careers ended prematurely but left a mark on the cricketing world.

Mohammad Wasim (Pakistan)

Playing Career: Less than four years

Before becoming a renowned cricket analyst and successful coach, Mohammad Wasim burst onto the international scene as a 19-year-old batter in 1996. He started his Test career with a duck, but it was his century in the second innings that caught everyone’s attention.

Despite Pakistan losing the match, Wasim’s performance was instrumental in their triumph against India in 1996 and during the World Series Down Under, where his strokeplay impressed many.

However, Wasim’s slow batting and inconsistency led to his dropping from the team, especially with the emergence of Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan. Wasim played 18 Tests and 25 ODIs in four years, scoring 783 and 543 runs respectively, before his career ended.

Marcus Trescothick (England)

Playing Career: Six years

Marcus Trescothick was England’s go-to opening batsman from 2000 to 2006, known for his powerful batting. In six years, he scored 26 centuries for England—14 in Tests and 12 in ODIs.

However, Trescothick’s career was cut short by anxiety attacks, particularly during foreign tours. Although he played his last few matches in England, the constant travel and the emergence of Alastair Cook as his replacement forced him to retire in 2008, two years after his final Test.

Jonathan Trott began his career with a bang and ended it on a low note. From 2009 to 2015, Trott was a key player for England, scoring nearly 4,000 runs in 52 Tests and 3,000 in 68 ODIs, with averages of almost 45 in Tests and over 50 in ODIs.

The South Africa-born batter was often considered as the most consistent batter of England until his career was cut short.

However, a stress-related illness caused him to leave the Ashes tour in 2013 abruptly. Despite a brief comeback, Trott’s struggles with anxiety led to his retirement, leaving fans to wonder what more he could have achieved.

Asim Kamal (Pakistan)

Playing Career: Less than two years

Asim Kamal was the Fawad Alam of early 2000’s. A left-handed batter from Karachi, who was always part of the discussion due to his good domestic record. However, unlike Alam, Kamal never got a proper run.

Asim Kamal’s short but impressive career saw him score eight fifties in 12 Tests. He proved to be a reliable lower-middle-order batsman, displaying elegance and class.

Despite scoring 717 runs at an average of 38 and performing well against teams like India, West Indies, and Australia, Kamal was dropped in 2005 and never recalled. His untimely departure from the team remains a mystery and a point of contention among fans.

Neil Johnson (Zimbabwe)

Playing Career: Less than two years

Neil Johnson’s career with Zimbabwe was brief but impactful. As a gifted all-rounder, he played a crucial role in Zimbabwe’s progress to the second round during the 1999 World Cup, earning three Man-of-the-Match awards.

In his short stint, Johnson scored 532 runs in 13 Tests and 1,679 runs in 48 ODIs, along with 50 international wickets. His departure to South Africa left a void in the Zimbabwean team that has never been fully filled.

Feroze Khan

Feroze Khan is one of Pakistan’s most renowned actors. Currently, he is making headlines after sharing insights about his life after marrying Dr. Zainab, his second wife. Known for his impressive acting, Feroze’s personal life has been under the spotlight for years. Particularly after his tumultuous divorce from his first wife, Aliza.

Feroze Khan Hopes Everyone Gets to Experience the Magic of Marriage

Feroze and Aliza’s marriage ended on a bitter note, with accusations of domestic violence and a contentious custody battle over their two children. Ultimately, Feroze gained custody of their son, Sultan, while Aliza retained custody of their daughter, Fatima. Moving past this difficult chapter, Feroze has started anew with Dr. Zainab, his cousin. The two married recently.

At a recent movie premiere, Feroze candidly spoke about how his life has changed after his second marriage. “I feel excellent, Alhamdulillah. It is a great feeling,” he stated. He added, “My life has changed completely after marriage.”

If you don’t know the talk of the town already, Feroze announced his second marriage to Dr. Zainab earlier this month. Feroze posted a picture of the newlyweds on Instagram on June 1, with the caption, “- welcome to my life; gorgeous,” accompanied by a series of emojis and the hashtag, ‘Nothing can stop us, we are up.’

Dr. Zainab is a psychologist by profession. Despite his previous marriage ending horribly in 2022, Feroze is looking forward to a brighter future. However, he did not address his past marriage or children during this conversation, it is clear that Feroze is ready to move forward. Which shouldn’t be difficult, as the media did not hold him accountable for his actions for too long. Feroze Khan was able to build his name in the industry soon, shortly after his public trial against charges of domestic violence.

In light of new beginnings, we wish Dr. Zainab and Feroze well in all their future endeavors.

‘Open Your Mind’: Rohit Sharma Responds To Inzamam’s Ball-Tampering Allegations

rohit-sharma-responds-inzamam-ball-tampering-allegations

India captain Rohit Sharma has hit back at former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq, who recently accused Indian pacers of ball-tampering during their T20 World Cup 2024 match against Australia.

Inzamam questioned how India’s bowlers, particularly Arshdeep Singh, managed to reverse swing the ball so early in the game.

Rohit’s Clever Response

Speaking at a press conference ahead of India’s semi-final against England, Rohit Sharma didn’t hold back. Known for his witty remarks, Rohit urged critics to “open your mind” and understand the conditions under which they are playing.

“What answer will I give? If you are playing under the sun and the wickets are this dry, the ball will reverse on its own. The ball is reversing for all teams. Not just for us,” Rohit stated.

“Sometimes, it’s important to open your mind (use your brain). You have to understand where we are playing. We are not playing in England or Australia,” he added, emphasizing the natural conditions contributing to the reverse swing.

Inzamam’s Accusations

Earlier, Inzamam-ul-Haq had raised eyebrows by questioning Arshdeep Singh’s ability to reverse swing the ball as early as the 15th over in their match against Australia.

“Arshdeep Singh, when he was bowling the 15th over, the ball was reversing. Is it too early [for reverse swing] with the new ball? This means the ball was ready for reverse swing by the 12th or 13th over. Umpires should keep their eyes open [to spot] these things,” Inzamam had stated on a local news channel.

Rohit Sharma’s Take on the Scheduling Controversy

The allegations come amid ongoing discussions about India potentially having an advantage due to the World Cup’s scheduling.

Former England cricketers Michael Vaughan and David Lloyd have accused the ICC of favoritism, noting that India was the only team to know their semi-final venue (Guyana) and date (June 27) even before the tournament started.

Rohit Sharma, however, dismissed the notion that India had any advantage. “I don’t think it’s an advantage – I mean, a lot of these players have played in different types of venues. I’m sure a lot of these English cricketers have played at this venue,” stated Sharma.

“So, I don’t see this as an advantage. At the end of the day, you’ve got to play good cricket to win a cricket game. That’s how I look at it.”

Michael Vaughan Slams ICC for Giving India ‘Unfair Advantage’ in Semi-Final

michael-vaughan-slams-icc-favoring-india-in-semi-final-champions-trophy-michael-vaughan-india-refusal-pakistan

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has stirred up controversy by accusing the International Cricket Council (ICC) of favoring India in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024. His criticism centers on the scheduling decisions for the semi-finals, which he believes were designed to benefit India.

Scheduling Controversy

Vaughan’s primary issue is with the first semi-final between Afghanistan and South Africa, which was held in Trinidad. He argued that it was unfair to schedule this crucial match in Trinidad right after Afghanistan’s victory in St. Vincent.

“So Afghanistan qualify for the WC semi winning in St Vincent on Monday night .. 4 hr flight delay on Tues to Trinidad so no time to practice or get accustomed to a new venue .. utter lack of respect to players I am afraid,” Vaughan posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Accusations of Favoritism

According to Vaughan, the first semi-final should have been between India and England, but the ICC tailored the schedule to suit India’s preferences. He criticized the decision to have India play their semi-final in Guyana, which conveniently aligns with prime-time viewing in India.

“Surely this Semi should have been the Guyana one .. but because the whole event is geared towards India it’s so unfair on others,” Vaughan posted.

For those unfamiliar, India was set to play their semi-final in Guyana regardless of their group standing because the match starts at 10:30 AM local time, which is prime-time 8:00 PM in India.

This timing aims to maximize viewership from the subcontinent. As a result, South Africa and England had to wait for India’s group status before knowing their travel plans for the semi-finals.

t20-world-cup-india-top-group-a-if-they-finish-second

Moreover, the rain may play spoilsport during India’s semi-final, which does not have  reserve day. If the game is washed out, the team that finished higher in their Super 8 group will advance to the final.

India, having topped Super 8 Group 1, are in a favorable position compared to England, who finished second with two wins out of three games. Meanwhile, South Africa comfortably defeated Afghanistan in the first semi-final, securing their spot in the final.
