Another Pakistani University Couple Goes Viral For Proposing

It seems that this is a new trend; Pakistani university couple on the university premises. In a recent viral clip, a couple is seen where the boy goes on his knees, and with a bouquet of flowers, he proposes to his, who we assume to be his girlfriend.

The girl accepts, and the two hug each other. This happened next to a heart made out of rose petals. There was also an ‘O heart R’ written inside the heart. Have a look at the video to see how the event transpired.

The viral proposal

The backlash on the couple

People were quick to bash. They brought in ethical issues, moral issues and discussed religious limitations to the expression of love. But they were not this kind about it. And the taunts were quite harsh.

This comes not too long after another Pakistani University Couple went viral for a proposal. In that, instead of the guy, the girl proposed, going on her knee. But after being bashed and the university becoming the highlight, the university had expelled the two.

It was later announced that the two, Hadiqa and Shehryar, got married to each other. Will the new couple also get expelled because they belong to the same city and, allegedly, the same university?

Top 6 Medical Clinical Trials That Went Horribly Wrong

Worst clinical trials that went wrong

The thirst for human knowledge sometimes can cause drastic results. But when you are curious, you need to conduct clinical trials. Since clinical trials are a step into the unknown, humans can make grave mistakes that lead to dangerous effects over time. There have been some of those trials where many people died or went through a near-death experience. Some of the worst clinical trials that shocked the world include:

1. Leukemia clinical trials

In 2016, a biotechnology company named Juno Therapeutics launched a clinical trial for cancer immunotherapy. In the trial, doctors injected the CAR-T into the affected individuals. The CAR-T therapy can kill the malignant cells in the patients, resulting in tumor cells’ death. The multiple side effects included headaches, altered consciousness, and toxicity. However, three patients died as a result of swelling in the brain.

2. Thalidomide clinical trial

In 1956, the drug thalidomide was introduced as a sedative medicine. Later, an Australian obstetrician discovered that the medication is safe for consumption in pregnant females for morning sickness. The medicine was then available OTC for frequent use because it had no possible side effects. By 1960, over 10,000 children were born with severe impairments, including missing limbs and cleft palates. There were also multiple cases of stillborn and miscarried pregnancies. In 1961, the same Australian doctor, William Mcbride discovered the relationship of thalidomide with birth defects. Within a year, the doctors banned thalidomide worldwide. This is one of the worst cases of a clinical trial on human beings.

3. Gene therapy clinical trial

An 18-year-old was suffering from a condition called ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency (OTC). He lacked an enzyme that does not cause the breakdown of ammonia in the body. As a result, ammonia accumulates in the liver, causing toxicity. In the late 1900s, a clinical trial started at the University of Pennsylvania, which aimed at removing the defect of the newborn at birth. The 18-year-old teen took part in the clinical trial, which resulted in a massive immune response in his body resulting in multiple organ failure and brain death.

4. The elephant man drug trial

In March 2006, 8 men took part in a clinical trial for an experimental leukemia drug known as TGN1412. The drug was successfully tested on monkeys, but there was no data of humans trials. As a result, they went through multiple organ failures and death. The clinical trial survivor recalls the horrendous experience of staying in the hospital for four weeks. After the incident, the patient had to get blood transfusions every twenty-four hours. He got frostbite in his fingers and toes, which lead to amputation.

5. John Hopkins asthma trials

A 24-year-old woman died while participating in a drug trial. Hexamethonium was a drug that was not FDA-approved. Doctors wanted to relate the action of the drug hexamethonium for asthmatic patients. The drug led to a cough which resulted in the breakdown of lung tissue and ultimately kidney failure.

6. Antipsychotic drug clinical trials

In 2003, Dr. Stephen Olson, an associate professor at the University of Minnesota’s recruited a young individual for a clinical trial. He wanted to study the effect of antipsychotic drugs in patients with their first psychotic episode. However, as a result of this trial, the patient’s condition kept deteriorating, and he ended up killing himself in his bathroom.

In conclusion, lack of adequate knowledge regarding human clinical trials can cause harmful effects, and these effects sometimes can be passed on to future generations.

Mardan Bride Demands A Unique Haq Mehr Worth Rs. 100,000

Mardan Bride

Often, women set Haq Mehr that is so interesting that they go viral. In the past, there was this man who gave a handwritten Quran to his wife. Today, a Mardan bride has demanded a haq mehr worth PKR 100,000 but not in currency notes.

Mardan Bride and books

The woman belongs to Mardan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and she has demanded that her husband provides books as haq Mehr. Usually, Haq Mehr is set by the girl’s family in our culture. And it is almost always a financial amount. But in originality, the Haq mehr is the bride’s right. And the Mardan bride has used it by telling her husband that more than money, she would prefer getting books. But the books, in total, should be worth 1 lac rupees.

Naila Shamal, the bride, is an author herself and hence, loves reading. Moreover, she is marrying someone who is also an author.

So it seems that the two authors decided to strengthen their bond with the exchange of books as the first gift post marriage.

Breaking stereotypes

She says that it is her way of breaking the stereotypical wrong traditions that have been embedded in our wedding customs.

“I asked for books because, firstly, everything has become so expensive. We can’t afford these things [lavish weddings] due to inflation. I did this because we need to put an end to wrong customs. Our lives are getting so difficult due to them.”

“Every woman wants gold and money, but as a writer, I asked for books. If, as a writer, I myself do not value books, how can I expect ordinary people to value them? This was the real reason I asked for books for my haq mehr — we need to value books ourselves so we can ask others to do so as well.”

Mehwish Hayat Stops Vasay Chaudhry On Body Shaming Joke

mehwish hayat

Amidst Aiman Khan skinny shaming Mawra and telling the fans they were mistaken in perceiving what she said, it turns out we do have celebrities who realize the significance of being on a public platform. Mehwish Hayat appeared on Vasay Chaudhry’s Ghabrana Mana Hai, the same show that was the Yasir Hussain-Nausheen Shah’s controversy starter.

Body Shaming Ahmed Ali Butt

Many conversations took place on the show. And as the show structure goes, Vasay scours the celebrities’ social media accounts and discusses the context they were taken in. During these topics, Mehwish named Ahmed Ali Butt. Vasay cut her response in between and went on to make a joke hinting towards Ahmed’s body.

Mehwis Hayat stops it midway

Mehwish was not going to have it. She immediately stops it, saying that she will not be involved in any body-shaming humor. Ghabrana Mana Hai host tried recovering from the unexpected setback, saying that he is friends with Ahmed and that he also makes such jokes. Mehwish said that it might be true, but she is of the understanding that jokes about friends should be made when sitting with those friends and not on a platform available to the masses.

Mehwish Hayat on Ghabrana Mana Hai

Having a celebrity who knows the burden of responsibilities that befalls their shoulders is our good luck. More stars who have gained fame from these very screens need to internalize these screens’ significance and the impact they leave on the viewers. And it is nice to see Mehwish Hayat has taken the lead of being the responsible personality we need in today’s day and age.

Sindh Govt Issues New SOPs For Smart Lockdown During Third Wave

Smart Lockdown
Credits: Express Tribune

[Update]: After the third wave of COVID in Pakistan, the Sindh government is imposing a smart lockdown. New guidelines have been issued for it.

According to the order, marketplaces will shut down at 10 pm with the exception of medical stores, petrol pumps, etc. Amusement parks will close off by 6 pm and indoor weddings will remain off-limits. Cinemas, gyms, theatres, all indoor activities will stay closed even though in the past order, it was said that they will reopen by 15th March.

You can find the detailed clauses in the attached document. Until further notice, the smart lockdown will stay in place until 15th April 2021.

[Nov 19th, 2020]: The year 2020 has not been the most kind to the people of this Earth. It started off with the advent of a virus. It soon developed into something far more serious and the world was forced to go indoors. New habits were made and new normals were set. It became an everyday thing to always wear a mask outside the house. Pakistan saw the first wave hit with quite a lot of pressure.

However, due to the right amount of precautions and procedures, we made it through with less of a toll. Now, with the second wave said to be approaching fast, the government has decided to take some more precautions. The cases are higher than ever before and the winter effect had amplified it. In light of recent events, the Ministry Of Education has proposed to shut down educational institutions, yet again.

Ministry Of Education shutting schools

The Second Coronavirus Wave

The second wave of the pandemic picked up around September and October. Cases saw a sudden spike in everyday numbers. The numbers were higher than they were in the summer, and they were not coming down. This gave a hint that maybe there was a need to implement stricter procedures. Even in the United States, the severity of the second wave was much higher than the first one.

Pakistan had a more significant issue to deal with besides the pandemic too. Due to a lot of the labor force being on daily wages, entirely shutting down the country was not an option. Pakistan had to deal with the virus and poverty. Schools and Colleges were shut down; classes were shifted online.

Shutting Down

Now, the Ministry Of Education has decided to close down the educational institutions yet again. Their decision states that schools are to be closed from November 24th. They will reopen after 31st January. Even then, the situation of the virus would be evaluated before opening.

Primary schools are to be closed from November 24th, with Middle schools from December 2nd and Secondary High from December 15th. They have also recommended that Matriculation and Intermediate exams be held in June 2021. This decision is taken with the hint of hope in attempts to slow down the spread of the virus.

Ministry Of Education to close educational institutions

Moving Towards The End Of 2020

As the end of the year approaches, the Ministry Of Education also stated an extension. The extension was to extend the academic year till May 31st. Pakistan has reported 37 Deaths and 2800 cases on Wednesday 18th November 2020. It is quite a wise decision to shut down educational institutions. Many of the workloads can be handled online, and any lab work can have students coming at intervals. What must not be done is to have gatherings of students inside labs.

Beyond the educational institutions, the government has also ordered the closure of wedding halls and banquet ceremonies. Not more than 300 people are allowed to attend, and that too with masks. The concept of smart lockdown is seemingly again in view as December approaches.

We hope Pakistan can ride out the second wave with the same amount of smoothness as the first one.

Tesla Raises Prices Of Four Of Its Electric Vehicles

Elon Musk’s electric cars’ prices are on the upward trend, and it appears the billionaire is looking to become a trillionaire. Will he be the first one to achieve this status?

tesla electric vehicles raises price

Four Vehicles’ Price Raised

Electric-vehicle major Tesla has increased prices on four of its models. The electric cars’ website shows that the price of its Model 3 Standard Range Plus has been increased by 1.4% to $37,490 from $36,990. Secondly, the Model 3 Long Range All-Wheel-Drive now costs $46,490, up 1.1% from $45,990.

The third price raise was for Model S Plaid Plus, which moved up $10,000, or 7.1%, to $149,990 from $139,990. Lastly, Tesla also raised its Model Y Long Range 2% price, or $1,000, to $49,990.

The raise itself is minimal, ranging from 1.1% to a maximum of 2%. However, when you consider the prices, to begin with, the increase is substantial.

Why The Increase?

Car enthusiasts are questioning why the increase is being witnessed now. This is especially the case because last month, Tesla cut the base models of its Model 3 and Model Y vehicles.

Moreover, according to automotive news, the company lowered the prices for its Model 3 in Japan in February. This was also an unpredictable move considering the market was a highly competitive one.

tesla electric vehicles raises price

Last Thursday, the standard model’s base price was cut fully 16% to 4.29 million yen ($40,500) from 5.11 million yen. On the other hand, the long-range version saw an even steeper drop of 1.56 million yen, or 24%, to 4.99 million yen.

Tesla – The Market Leader

Automobile analysts have been calling the company “the global leader in the EV market.”

The analysts are saying that Tesla remains the leader in “one of the fastest-growing global markets.” This market is the one for electric vehicles, which is expected to grow at about a 30% compound annual growth rate through 2030.

Analysts have also noted that Tesla’s model, “similar to Apple’s vertically integrated model,” drives innovation and pushes manufacturing costs lower. Then why the price raise?

Would You Invest?

tesla electric vehicles raises price

Considering the market for electric vehicles is only beginning to gain popularity in Pakistan, would you invest that staggering amount in Tesla? More than anything, Tesla has become a symbol of wealth. There was a Mercedes or, at best, a Rolls Royce to distinguish yourself in the olden days. Nowadays, it’s a Tesla!

Ali Zafar Replies To A Fan’s Marriage Proposal From Netherlands

ali zafar fan proposal

Ali Zafar is coming in people’s dreams as their husband and being proposed to. It’s the funniest (and most relatable) thing to come across!

Question and Answer Session Turned into Proposal

Ali Zafar tweeted to his fans to have a question and answer session. A fan named Cynthia R. Sitara did not beat around the bush. She had one question to ask and she popped it!

Bhai’s Response?

Ali Zafar’s response was extremely characteristic of him: hilarious and direct! He had to turn down his fan but he did it with a sprinkle of humour because we hope you understand!

Bhai (Har Jagah) Hazir Hai?

A Portuguese fan of Ali Zafar apparently dozed off for only 15 minutes and ended up dreaming the most hilarious of events. In her dream, she was married to none other than Ali Zafar and envisioned herself as his wife.

She, surprised and amused, took to Twitter to let the star know what effect he has on people. It seems her lucky stars were all coming in order because the real Ali Zafar – not the dream one – also noticed her!

Not Too Happy With The Translation!

When fans saw the translation of the girl’s tweet, hilarity ensued. Many started joking about how they had either been in the same position or would love to be in one.

Another fan shared the translation with Zafar after he asked for the “tarjuma”.

Fans’ Reaction

Zafar is known to interact and engage with his fans routinely on his social media profiles. This engagement was particularly funny and so, many fans hopped on board to have a good laugh. Here’s how people were reacting.

Why Engaging With Fans Is Important

All celebrities also adopt a different persona on social media. Some are just as open and carefree while others lead a posed life to be it in terms of posting or interacting.

However, it has generally been noticed that those celebrities who interact with their fans have a higher engagement. Their fans follow them and engage with them more in the chances of being noticed.

The benefit of that? More brands want to endorse that celebrity then. Greater engagement means greater audience and reach which means more partnerships. Hence, if you ever become a celebrity, don’t forget to chat with your fans!

Santex Products Steps In To Tackle Period Poverty In Sindh Prisons

Santex

PAKISTAN, Karachi, 12th March, 2021: Santex Products Private Limited, a leading name in the personal hygiene care industry in Pakistan, has signed an MoU with Sindh Prisons and Correctional Services Department (Government of Sindh) and Committee for the Welfare of Prisoners- Legal Aid Society (CWP-LAO), to improve the access of menstrual products to female prisoners in Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur & Larkana.

Adequate access to safe sanitary products has always been a struggle due to the shame and stigma that surrounds periods. The situation is even more unsettling for the incarcerated women whose menstrual needs largely go unmet due to lack of resources.

Santex Products through its Butterfly Outreach program has been donating monthly supplies of sanitary napkins to the prisons to ensure accessibility of necessary menstrual hygiene products for inmates. Awareness sessions are also being conducted on Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) to educate female prisoners about the importance of safe feminine hygiene practices. The MoU with the Sindh Prisons and Correctional Services Department and CWP-LAO is a further extension of these efforts on a formal ground.

Speaking about the importance of this partnership, Ms. Rodrigues, Marketing Lead Santex Products, said, “We believe every woman from any walk of life, should be able to go through her monthly cycle with dignity. Access to menstrual products is a challenge for most and we are happy to see our joint efforts with CWP-LAO and Sindh Prisons Departments will result in better access and personal hygiene awareness for the female inmates”

Inspector General of Prisons (IGP) Sindh, Mr.  Kazi Nazeer Ahmed shared that this partnership initiative is an avenue to promote healthy recreational activities for inmates, also resulting in their improved mental health. It will support to secure improved rights for menstruating populations in prisons through ensuring improvement in the knowledge, attitude and practice parameters related to menstrual health of prisoners and prison staff.

Speaking on this signing ceremony, Justice (R) Nasir Aslam Zahid, Chairperson, CWP-LAO stated that “incarcerated women are less likely than males to have outside financial support and they do not earn enough from in-prison jobs to pay for necessities quantities are often limited and not always available when needed. it will be easier to ensure more visibility of the excellent work carried out through this partnership by Santex Products and the Sindh Prison Department, thus to improve confidence and self-esteem among the women inmates and the initiative will also help reduce anxiety amongst them.

Sri Lanka Announces Burqa Ban & Shutting Down Of Madrassas

After France, Sri Lanka is following suit. It will be banning Muslim women from wearing a burqa. Aside from that, they will also be shutting down more than a thousand Islamic schools. The announcements were made on Saturday by a government Minister.

Srilankan Minister announces Burqa Ban

Sarath Weerasekera, Minister for public security, brought up the conversation in a news conference that because of the burqa, the individuals have their faces covered. And it is becoming a hindrance to national security. So, to tackle this, Weerasekera signed a paper and sent it to the cabinet for approval.

The minister said: “In our early days, Muslim women and girls never wore the burqa. It is a sign of religious extremism that came about recently. We are definitely going to ban it.”

Sri Lanka and extremism

Srilanka, the Buddhist majority nation, had banned the burqa once earlier as well. This was a follow-up to when there were church and hotel bombings in 2019. The bombings killed 250 individuals.

The news hints at further extremist policies of Sri Lanka. In the past, they had given the order of cremating the fatalities of COVID-19. This goes against the Islamic values and hurts the Muslim Srilankan’s sentiments.

Various human rights activists spoke up regarding that. In conversation with a publication, one activist, Shreen Saroor, said that these moves come “at a time when the Muslim community has been constantly targeted. It’s part of the Islamophobic reaction in Sri Lanka.”

Following this situation, people in India have started demanding a burqa ban now.

Considering the burqa is worn by Muslims, is this another nation’s way of pushing the Muslim population to only the Muslim majority countries. Is that not going to create a divide between different religions?

4 Dangerous Side Effects Of Drinking Too Much Coffee

Caffeine is often believed to be an incredibly healthy beverage given that its ingredients can boost metabolism, stabilize moods, and alert a person. However, too much of anything has always been undesirable, and it’s the same case for coffee! Have too much, and the same ingredients work against you. Here’s how:

1. Caffeine-Induced Anxiety

Caffeine is known to promote alertness in a person by blocking the effects of the brain chemical that makes you feel tired. However, simultaneously it also releases adrenaline in your brain, the hormone associated with increased energy. At higher intakes, these effects become pronounced, leading to anxiety and nervousness in a person.

This has also been proven medically given that caffeine-induced anxiety disorder is one of four caffeine-related syndromes listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) published by the American Psychiatric Association.

2. Induced Insomnia

We get it; almost all of us, be it a student, a parent, an employee, or whoever, we have all had coffee to say awake because it genuinely helps in doing so. But too much caffeine can actually reverse that and make it difficult to get any sleep at all.

Medical studies have found that higher caffeine intake increases the amount of time it takes to fall asleep. As a consequence, it can also decrease the total sleeping time. By contrast, low or moderate amounts of caffeine don’t seem to affect sleep very much in people. This means coffee won’t disturb your sleep as long as you take it in a controlled amount!

3. Digestive Issues

People usually opt for coffee also because a good morning cup can get the bowels moving. Coffee has a laxative effect, which is courtesy of the release of gastrin, a hormone the stomach produces. Moreover, caffeine also stimulates bowel movements by increasing peristalsis, the contractions that move food through your digestive tract.

However, too much caffeine can lead to loose stools or even diarrhea amongst people. As aforementioned, the good qualities of caffeine are only best reaped when taken in a controlled amount.

4. Addiction

It is addictive. We know that we have experienced it, and we have witnessed it. Medical studies have proven that coffee triggers brain chemicals, similar to what drugs do. Though it does not cause the type of addiction drugs to do, it creates a psychological dependency or even a physical one. Again, as a cause of high dosages.

The moral of the story then is: have coffee every day but make sure you are having coffee, not the other way around!
