In retaliation for Harvard's noncompliance, federal officials acted quickly, saying they would freeze $2.2 billion in multiyear research.
Harvard University, the world’s richest university, has sued the Trump administration, pushing back against the government’s threats to slash billions of dollars in research money from the institution. The lawsuit represents an escalation of the fight between President Trump and leading U.S. higher-education institutions.
Background of the Conflict
The Trump administration has long set its sights on elite universities, framing its actions as part of a larger effort to fight antisemitism and other matters. But critics contend that the administration has also had its sights on curtailing programs related to racial diversity and gender studies, prompting the anger of many academic institutions, including Harvard.
In an earlier move this month, Harvard declined to bow to a series of demands from the federal government that it considered illegal. The resistance represented the strongest pushback from an institution of higher education to the political agenda of the Trump administration.
In retaliation to Harvard’s noncompliance, federal officials acted quickly, saying they would freeze $2.2 billion in multiyear research grants to the university, as well as a $60 million contract. Harvard leaders have denounced the actions, maintaining that the government is employing fiscal leverage to try to intrude on the university’s academic autonomy and decision-making.
The Lawsuit
Harvard sued in federal court in Massachusetts, charging the Trump administration with a sweeping attack on trying to exert control over academic choices at the university. The lawsuit makes clear that the government’s action is an overreach, seeking to control academic programming through money manipulation.
Furthermore, the suit highlights other great universities that experienced similar funding reductions as part of the Trump regime’s attempt to impose its political will on the higher education community.
The Broader Implications for Higher Education
This case extends beyond monetary issues. It is a wider defence of academic freedom and the independence of universities in the United States. The resolution of this court case could have far-reaching consequences for the interplay between government funding and academic autonomy.
Harvard’s action is likely to have ripple effects throughout higher education institutions, potentially influencing future policy on government influence over universities and academic offerings.
Harvard’s lawsuit against the Trump administration highlights the existing conflict between the federal government and educational institutions. As the battle in the courts progresses, it may establish significant precedents for the future of higher education and the part played by government funding in determining academic policies.

From Hailstorms to Earthquakes: Is the Earth Trying to Say Something?
As Earth Day 2025 arrives, it’s time to confront an undeniable truth: our planet is increasingly overwhelmed by natural disasters and human actions have a significant hand in their intensification.
On April 17, 2025, Pakistan was hit by an unusual and ominous double strike; a destructive hailstorm in Islamabad and mild earthquake tremors across multiple regions. This tragedy is more than just a coincidence; it is a glaring reminder that the climate crisis is not just about rising temperatures and melting ice—it’s about a rapidly destabilising planet that is now showing its fury in unpredictable ways.
They’re warnings, and we’re running out of time to respond.
Is Nature Furious?
These occurrences are not merely extreme weather events; they are the direct consequence of a warming planet. This strange confluence of storms and seismic activity highlights the urgent need to reassess our relationship with nature.
While many might see these events as simply “bad luck,” there’s a deeper, more troubling reality. The science is clear: climate change is driving extreme weather and may even be influencing geological activity.
Yes, earthquakes are primarily caused by tectonic shifts, but the environmental stress caused by deforestation, water scarcity, and rising temperatures can aggravate these geological processes.
Nature is Furious
Climate Change: The Reason Behind the Disasters
The rising frequency of extreme weather is a direct consequence of the changing climate. Global warming has caused shifts in atmospheric pressure, moisture levels, and wind patterns, creating the perfect conditions for freak hailstorms to form where they were once rare.
But let’s take this a step further: the climate crisis doesn’t only influence atmospheric conditions, it also exacerbates the impact of natural disasters. As temperatures rise, glaciers melt, rivers swell and ecosystems become unstable. Hence a highly volatile environment is created in which natural systems are more prone to failure.
Why Earth Day Should be a Call to Action, Not Just Reflection
On this Earth Day, we must confront the reality that climate change is not some distant threat—it is here, and it is intensifying the frequency of natural disasters. We are not just facing rising sea levels or dangerous heatwaves; we are witnessing a convergence of catastrophes through storms and earthquakes, floods and wildfires, landslides and droughts.
We cannot afford to ignore the warning signs any longer. While hailstorms and earthquakes may seem disconnected at first glance, their increasing frequency is a testament to how deeply the planet’s natural systems are being altered by our actions. From deforestation to carbon emissions, every facet of our destructive footprint has a role to play in these disasters.
Strong Action Must Be Taken
Earth Day should not just be about commemorating the Earth—we must use it as a rallying cry for urgent action. The clock is ticking. As we continue to push the planet’s ecosystems beyond their breaking points, we can expect more of these deadly, unpredictable “double strikes.”
Here is what needs to be done (if we truly want these unpredictable natural disasters to stop):
Stop treating climate change like a future problem. It’s present tense.
Hold polluters accountable. Corporate greenwashing and empty pledges aren’t enough.
Prioritise renewable energy—and make it resilient. We can’t afford fragile solutions.
Demand stronger climate policies. Our government works for us.
We’re not just celebrating Earth today—we’re fighting for it. And if you’re not angry, you’re not paying attention.
This Earth Day, let’s pledge to confront the climate crisis head on. Words are not enough, it’s time for tangible action. The planet’s warning bells are ringing louder than ever and it’s high time that we listen.

By Helen Brand OBE, Chief Executive, ACCA The Passport to Possibility: Global Talent Mobility in a Changing World In the great economic chessboard of the 21st century, it is talent, not oil or capital, that is the most valuable resource. And like any high-value asset, it must move across borders. Unlocking Borderless Careers in Finance.
For finance professionals, the world is no longer a collection of silos. It’s a dynamic, digitised, and deeply interconnected marketplace, and mobility is a golden thread that binds it all together.
Whether it’s a Pakistani accountant supporting a tech firm in Dubai, or a sustainability expert in Karachi consulting for a social enterprise in London, one thing is clear: the future belongs to those who are agile and global in their mindset.
At ACCA, we’ve long understood this shift. In fact, we’ve designed our entire ecosystem to empower it.
Finance without Borders
ACCA’s Qualification has always been a passport to worldwide opportunity. With members in 180 countries and offices in all major economic centres, we’ve built a truly global profession. But a qualification alone is not enough – it’s the mindset, the network, and the continuous learning that makes mobility meaningful.
Our Global Talent Trends survey of almost 10,000 finance professionals in 2024 backs this up: 44% of professionals worldwide are planning a career move within 12 months, and 45% of them want to move internationally in their career at some point.
Pakistan boasts one of the largest youth populations in the world. It is digitally literate, globally aware, and (when given the right tools) eager to contribute to the world stage. ACCA’s mission is to equip young professionals not only for employment, but to thrive on the global stage. We prepare them to work anywhere, for anyone, and in ways that are both future-focused and ethically grounded.
The Business Case for Mobility
This isn’t just a win for individuals, it’s a game-changer for business. Companies that embrace mobile talent gain access to new markets, fresh ideas, and a richer blend of experiences. They benefit from professionals who understand international compliance frameworks, digital finance, and ESG imperatives – skills that are increasingly non-negotiable in a global economy.
That’s why ACCA works closely with employers to understand their evolving needs. Our qualifications are updated regularly, our Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) with global bodies make transitions smoother, and our CPD (Continuing Professional Development) ensures our members stay relevant, regardless of geography.
But technical skills alone are not enough. In today’s landscape, finance professionals must also lead in embedding ESG, sustainability, and climate action best practices. These are no longer optional – they’re foundational to brand value, public trust, and long-term, inclusive growth.
ACCA has placed sustainability at the heart of our qualification and our thought leadership, preparing professionals to help organisations balance profit with purpose and comply with evolving global reporting standards.
Making Careers More Accessible
But here’s the real story: mobility must not be the privilege of a few. At ACCA, we’re deeply committed to levelling the playing field. That means reducing barriers to entry, offering flexible study options, and making our qualification accessible to those from all walks of life, including working mothers, first-generation students, and professionals in underserved regions.
When we talk about mobility, we don’t just mean flying across continents. We mean climbing up the ladder, crossing the digital divide, and bridging social gaps. That’s the kind of mobility that transforms economies from within.
Pakistan: The Emerging Global Talent Hub
If we’re serious about economic recovery, foreign investment, and inclusive growth, then talent mobility must be a national priority. Pakistan has what it takes to become a regional (and even global) talent hub. Its professionals are capable, its entrepreneurs are resilient, and its shared services and outsourcing (SSO) ecosystem is quietly booming.
International firms are increasingly tapping into Pakistan for finance and business services. This presents an extraordinary opportunity, not only to create jobs but to export knowledge and services to the world.
But to unlock this potential, we need stronger public-private collaboration, better support for upskilling, and policy frameworks that enable mobility, not restrict it.
Mobility also means moving with the times. At ACCA, we’re urging professionals and organisations alike to embrace the power of AI, understanding its potential to enhance decision-making and efficiency, while also managing its ethical risks. Our members are trained to be more than technicians; they are strategic thinkers who must navigate the complex intersection of innovation, governance, and trust. As automation transforms finance, it is the human judgment behind the algorithms that will set organisations apart.
At ACCA, we stand ready. We’ve seen what happens when countries invest in their people and trust them to take on the world. It’s transformative. It’s lasting. And it’s time Pakistan claimed its place in that story.

Hello to Hola: WhatsApp Users will Soon be Able to Translate Messages within the Chat
WhatsApp is preparing to make the conversations even smoother with a new feature that lets users translate messages right in chats — without the need to jump to other apps. The feature, now in testing among beta users, might be available widely very soon, allowing individuals of different languages to communicate easily.
Translate Without Leaving the App
The feature, which was seen in recent beta releases, adds a “Translate Messages” switch in chat options. After enabling it for a particular chat, users can select a desired language like Spanish, Arabic, Hindi, Russian, or Brazilian Portuguese. The app downloads the corresponding language pack and performs translations on the device completely — keeping it private and quick.
Source: Republic World
Users can view the translation through the familiar three-dot menu in a chat and select “View Translation.” Both the original and the translated text will be shown side by side so that clarity will not be confused with. There is also an option to turn off the translation or hide it, which gives users control over when and how they utilize the tool.
Privacy-First, Like Always
One of the unique features of this tool is that it functions entirely offline, with local processing and language pack downloads. That means WhatsApp maintains its adherence to end-to-end encryption, even while making it more feature-rich.
This isn’t the first time WhatsApp has ventured into smart language tools. In 2024, the company announced on-device voice note transcription, assisting users in turning voice messages into text using the same privacy-sustaining architecture.
For millions of users in multilingual homes, international communities, or those who travel frequently, this new translation feature could be a game-changer. Rather than copying and pasting messages into third-party translators like Google Translate, users can remain within the app — saving time and minimising the friction of cross-language conversations.
Source: GSM Arena
Though Meta hasn’t announced a public launch date yet, the fact that testing commenced in mid-2024 and is currently in advanced beta implies a complete launch could occur in weeks.
Through this step, WhatsApp continues to transform from an easy messaging platform to a clever, privacy-focused communication tool — making global discussions smoother, more intuitive, and more inclusive.

The second phase of stadium renovation at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi will begin right after the HBL Pakistan Super League Season 10 ends. As per early reports, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will launch a complete reprofiling of the stadium stands, followed by a wide-scale redevelopment project.
This upgrade aims to bring the stadium’s infrastructure up to international standards and make it a more welcoming venue for both local and international matches. The decision comes after a notably low turnout during HBL PSL 2025 matches in Karachi, which many fans and stakeholders linked to outdated facilities and a poor spectator experience. Authorities are now moving fast to address these problems.
The renovation includes redesigning all seating areas with better comfort, spacing and improved sightlines. Architectural updates will also focus on giving the stadium a modern look while maintaining its historical importance.
PCB is also restructuring the stadium’s entry and exit routes to make crowd flow smoother, improve safety, and cut down on congestion. Parking will be reorganized with designated zones to fix the long-standing issues faced by visitors, especially on match days.
While the PCB has not shared a fixed timeline for completing the renovation, sources confirm that work will begin right after the league ends. The planned changes reflect the PCB’s commitment to improve the stadium environment, ensuring a better experience for spectators, teams and officials.
By focusing on comfort, aesthetics, safety, and accessibility in the second phase of stadium renovation, PCB hopes to attract larger crowds in future events and restore the stadium’s reputation as one of the country’s top cricket venues.

In a night filled with drama, tension, and a few fiery moments, Karachi Kings edged past Peshawar Zalmi in a last-over thriller at the National Bank Stadium. But while the Kings walked away with two crucial points, their all-rounder Aamir Jamal didn’t escape unscathed.
Aamir Jamal Crosses the Line
During the 15th over of Zalmi’s innings, Aamir Jamal got a little too fired up after dismissing Hussain Talat. Instead of celebrating and walking back to his mark, Jamal had a few words for the departing batter—words that didn’t sit well with the match officials.
The result? A 5% fine on his match fee under Level 1 of the PSL Code of Conduct. The offence falls under Article 2.5, which deals with provoking gestures or remarks aimed at dismissed batters.
On-field umpires Faisal Afridi and Paul Reiffel immediately flagged the incident, and Jamal accepted both the charge and the penalty handed out by match referee Iftikhar Ahmed.
Controlled aggression is part of the game, sure. But the line between passion and provocation? That’s one players still need to respect.
Kings Snatch a Nail-Biter
On the cricketing front, Karachi Kings pulled off a heart-stopping two-wicket win, their third victory of PSL 10. And boy, did they have to work for it.
Chasing 148 on a sluggish surface wasn’t going to be easy. The chase began on a shaky note—Tim Seifert gone for a golden duck on the very first ball. Luke Wood’s inswinger was just too good. James Vince didn’t last long either. At 15 for 2, things looked wobbly.
But David Warner stepped up, showing composure in a tense situation. His 60 off 47 balls held the innings together. He stitched together small, gritty partnerships with Saad Baig, Irfan Khan, and Mohammad Nabi to keep the scoreboard ticking.
Yet, even with Warner’s effort, the Kings weren’t home and dry. When he fell in the 17th over, Karachi found themselves teetering at 133 for 8.
Enter Khushdil Shah: The Finisher
And then came Khushdil Shah. Calm under pressure, he turned the game around. His unbeaten 23 off 17, including three well-timed boundaries, was exactly what the Kings needed.
With just three balls left in the match, Hasan Ali sealed the deal with a leg-side boundary that sent the Karachi fans into a frenzy. This win keeps Karachi’s campaign alive and kicking, and they’ll carry that momentum into their next match against Quetta Gladiators at Gaddafi Stadium on April 25.

The Viral Dubai Kunafa Chocolate has Caused a Global Shortage of
A TikTok video. One bite. 120 million views. And just like that, Dubai’s Kunafa chocolate has become the world’s most unlikely disruptor — not just in dessert trends but in the global pistachio market.
Source: Tribune
Released in 2021 by FIX Chocolatier, the then-infamous chocolate bar “Can’t Get Knafeh of It” softly blended nostalgia and innovation. Bringing together creamy pistachio filling, crushed pretzels, and silky milk chocolate, the bar was inspired by the classic Middle Eastern dessert Kunafa. But it wasn’t until December 2023 that it burst onto the international scene — courtesy of Dubai-based influencer Maria Vehera, whose ASMR video savouring the treat went viral.
From Viral Treat to Market Shake-Up
Since the video, however, the bar has transformed into more than a sweet fad. It’s a luxury fixation, a limited-edition gem sold for only two hours a day in the UAE. That scarcity only piqued global appetites. Chocolate brands Lindt and Läderach soon followed suit, launching their own pistachio-laden versions — and that’s when the pistachio panic set in.
Already shaken by weak 2023 crops, the pistachio industry was stretched to the breaking point. Prices have risen from $7.65 to $10.30 per pound in less than a year, and demand keeps exceeding supply. “The pistachio world is tapped out,” nut traders say.
A Nutty Global Impact
The leading pistachio exporter, the United States, had a smaller harvest last year. That left a void which the second-largest exporter, Iran, has moved in to take. Its exports of pistachios to the UAE have grown by 40%, showing just how far this chocolate phenomenon has shifted global trade.
But even at premium prices, demand has not fallen. Stores are restricting customer purchases, and premium versions of the Kunafa chocolate — such as Lindt’s £10 bar — remain flying off the shelves.
The Fix Effect
FIX, the founder, refers to it as “a movement in chocolate.” With sparse distribution and cult-like popularity, their Kunafa bar has altered not just our perception of dessert but also the way that food trends around the world can percolate out into agriculture, trade, and pricing.
Source: Reddit
What started as a niche item is now a cultural phenomenon — evidence that in the TikTok era, a chocolate bar can move markets, drain nut stocks, and still leave us wanting more.

Mohammad Amir doesn’t mince his words. He never did on the field, and he’s certainly not doing it off the field either.
In a candid interview with a local news channel, the former Pakistan pacer and current Quetta Gladiators spearhead pulled no punches—be it about on-field aggression, his struggles post-World Cup, or even Babar Azam’s recent form.
“If You Hit Me First Ball, I Won’t Hug You”
Amir set the tone right away. “If someone hits a shot off my first ball, I’m not going to go hug him—I’ll obviously say something to him to throw him off focus,” he said with a grin that hinted at the fierce competitor within.
According to him, cricket isn’t just about skills—it’s a mental game. He reminisced about the sport’s golden era, saying, “In the past, cricket used to be fierce. Sir Vivian Richards is with us—ask him. Back then, it felt like someone might actually hit you with the bat.”
Aggression, he believes, is part of the game’s beauty. You rattle the batter, shake their focus, and force mistakes. That’s how you win moments in high-pressure contests.
Aggression Without Disrespect
But Amir made it clear—he’s not here to cross the line.
“Disturbing someone on the field doesn’t mean disrespecting them,” he explained. “Off the field, we’re all chatting like friends.”
He also talked about controlled aggression—that perfect balance between passion and discipline. “If I use inappropriate language, the umpire will catch me, and the match referee will fine me. But if no one is penalizing me, it means I’m being aggressively controlled.”
It’s that old-school mindset, mixed with modern rules, and Amir seems to walk that line well.
“Thank You Very Much to International Cricket”
The conversation then shifted to a more personal and emotional note. Mohammad Amir revealed the sacrifice he made to represent Pakistan at the T20 World Cup, walking away from a lucrative county contract.
“Whatever I played in the World Cup, I ended up spending more money myself. My trainer travelled with me, and I bore all those expenses personally.”
But what stung more than the financial hit? Silence.
“After the World Cup ended, no one even talked to me,” he said. “No one told me about any plans. A wise man needs no further explanation.”
That silence, he said, spoke volumes. So now, Amir has made up his mind. “Thank you very much to international cricket.”
Amir’s rivalry with Babar Azam often dominates social media debates, but in this interview, he kept it real.
“Babar Azam is Pakistan’s best cricketer. No doubt about that. But right now, he’s going through a bad patch — and it’s been a bit too long.”
He pointed out a technical issue too: “Babar is arriving a little late to the ball, and because of that, he’s struggling with shot selection.”
No shade. No drama. Just a fast bowler’s perspective on a top batter who’s trying to find his groove again.

The hunt for Pakistan’s next permanent head coach is heating up — and the name at the top of the list? Mike Hesson.
Yes, the same Hesson who made waves as New Zealand’s head coach from 2012 to 2018. The same guy is now calling the shots at Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). And now, it seems, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is looking to bring him on board for the national side.
Why Mike Hesson?
Let’s face it — Pakistan cricket has had a rough time finding stability in its coaching staff.
Jason Gillespie came in as the red-ball coach last year, but that tenure didn’t last long. He exited in December after a string of underwhelming performances and what we can safely call “internal drama.”
Before that, Gary Kirsten tried his luck with the white-ball team — but even the South African legend couldn’t stick around. He left just six months in, reportedly unhappy with how things were being run.
So, enter Mike Hesson.
What Makes Hesson a Strong Contender?
Here’s the thing about Hesson: he’s calm, methodical, and understands modern cricket. During his time with New Zealand, he took a talented but inconsistent side and turned them into serious contenders on the world stage.
Let’s not forget — Hesson was at the helm when the Black Caps reached the 2015 World Cup final. He also played a big role in grooming players like Kane Williamson and Trent Boult into global stars.
And with coaching stints in high-pressure T20 environments like the IPL, Hesson isn’t new to handling big egos and media scrutiny — something that comes with the territory in Pakistan cricket.
A Familiar Face in Pakistan
He’s not a stranger to the Pakistani cricket circuit either. Currently coaching Islamabad United, he’s already well aware of the local talent pool, team culture, and, yes, the expectations that come with the job.
That familiarity might work in his favour, especially in a system that has burned out several top coaches in just a matter of months.
The PCB has set a deadline of May 4 for applications. Candidates must hold at least a Level III coaching certificate, and with limited local options available, the board seems pretty clear: they want another foreign coach.
It’s a pattern now. From Mickey Arthur to Kirsten to Gillespie — the PCB keeps turning to overseas names. The big question is: will they finally find the right fit?

A Speedy Summary of Netflix YOU S4 Before Joe Goldberg Returns this Thursday
Before Joe Goldberg possibly returns to our screens, let’s revisit the gory mayhem of his European escapade in Season 4 of Netflix YOU. Swapping Paris for London, Joe assumed the identity of Professor Jonathan Moore, hoping to leave his murderous past behind and embrace a quiet academic life. Of course, that didn’t last. Joe soon found himself entangled with a toxic circle of London socialites, thanks to his neighbour Kate Galvin and the charismatic author-turned-mayoral candidate Rhys Montrose. His plan to quietly observe from the sidelines quickly unravelled when members of this elite circle began dropping like flies — victims of the enigmatic “Eat the Rich” killer. Ominously, the murderer seemed to know Joe’s true identity and began tormenting him, framing him for the crimes.
A Different Joe
For the first half of the season, Joe became an amateur detective, frantically trying to uncover the killer while protecting Kate, with whom he shared a complicated relationship. He ultimately identified Rhys Montrose as the killer. But Part 2 revealed the season’s most shocking twist: Rhys — the killer and tormentor — was largely a creation of Joe’s fractured mind, a projection of his darkest urges that he had tried (and failed) to repress after faking his own death at the end of Season 3. Joe himself was the Eat the Rich killer, committing the brutal murders while in a dissociative state.
The real Rhys Montrose was merely a public figure Joe had fixated on. When the truth surfaced, Joe spiralled, leading to a dramatic confrontation with his imaginary “Rhys” and a failed suicide attempt. He was saved — only to fully embrace his murderous nature.
In a ruthless move to tie up loose ends, Joe framed his sharp-witted student, Nadia, for his crimes, effectively silencing her after she uncovered the truth. The season ended with Joe back in New York City, now alongside the wealthy Kate Galvin, who had come to accept him — darkness and all. To the outside world, Joe presented a sanitised, sympathetic persona, cleared of all charges and seemingly more powerful, guiltless, and dangerous than ever.
Joe Goldberg is back in his element — fully integrated with his killer instincts — and the stage is set for more deadly drama to come. Only Season 5 will tell what will happen next.

Who Could Replace Pope Francis? A Glimpse at the Possible Candidates
After the passing of Pope Francis, speculation is only natural about who could eventually replace him. A new pope is elected in a conclave — a private assembly of the College of Cardinals under the age of 80 — wherein the selection of the next leader of the Catholic Church is said to be guided by the Holy Spirit. Forecasting the outcome is notoriously difficult, since cardinals tend to seek out qualities appropriate to the perceived needs of the Church at that particular moment. The familiar maxim, “He who enters the conclave a pope, leaves it a cardinal,” testifies to this uncertainty.
Yet, based on their current positions, experience, and influence within the Church, a number of cardinals are frequently named by Vatican commentators as likely candidates, or papabili. A few notable ones include:
Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle (Philippines, born 1957)
Credentials: Currently the Pro-Prefect for the Section of New Evangelisation of the Dicastery for Evangelisation. Formerly Archbishop of Manila and Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples. Holds doctorates in sacred theology.
Profile: Known for his pastoral warmth, communication skills, and focus on the “Church of the poor.” Seen by many as a symbol of continuity with Pope Francis’s vision and representative of the Church’s growing role in Asia. His relative youth is also a noted advantage.
Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle
Cardinal Pietro Parolin (Italy, b. 1955)
Credentials: Vatican Secretary of State since 2013 — effectively the Holy See’s chief diplomat and administrator. Former Apostolic Nuncio to Venezuela. Holds a doctorate in canon law.
Profile: As a central figure in the governance of the Church during Pope Francis’s pontificate, Parolin represents experience, stability, and a deep understanding of both the Roman Curia and global Church diplomacy. Often viewed as a candidate for continuity and administrative efficiency.
Cardinal Pietro Parolin
Cardinal Péter Erdő (Hungary, b. 1952)
Credentials: Archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest and Primate of Hungary. A respected canonist and theologian with doctorates in both fields. Twice elected President of the Council of Episcopal Conferences of Europe (CCEE).
Profile: Considered a leading intellectual with significant pastoral and administrative experience. Often seen as representing a more traditionally oriented European perspective, yet pragmatic and respected across theological lines.
Credentials: Archbishop of Bologna and President of the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI). Long affiliated with the Community of Sant’Egidio, known for peace mediation and humanitarian work. Appointed by Pope Francis as his peace envoy for the war in Ukraine.
Profile: Respected as a pastoral leader with a strong commitment to social justice, interfaith dialogue, and peacebuilding. His influence within the Italian Church and alignment with Pope Francis’s vision of mercy and outreach make him a prominent candidate.
Cardinal Matteo Zuppi
Cardinal Charles Maung Bo (Myanmar, b. 1948)
Credentials: Archbishop of Yangon, Myanmar. President of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC). Member of the Salesians of Don Bosco.
Profile: Leads the Church in a nation facing profound political and social challenges. A strong advocate for democracy, human rights, and interreligious harmony in Asia. His election would highlight the Church’s universality and its expanding role in the Global South.
Cardinal Charles Maung Bo
Other Considerations:
This list is far from exhaustive. Cardinals from Africa, Latin America, North America, and other parts of Europe could also emerge as strong contenders, depending on the dynamics within the conclave. Factors such as age, health, linguistic ability, pastoral experience, administrative skills, and theological orientation all play a role.
Ultimately, the decision rests with the cardinal electors, who will seek divine guidance in choosing the best-qualified individual to lead the Catholic Church after Pope Francis.

Try to listen beyond the daily din. Below the whirr of servers and the wheezing sounds of engines — can you hear it? The laboured, ragged gasp of a planet stretched to its breaking point? Ditch the soft whispers; the Earth is sending signals, encoded in numbers and an nual conservation reports. Is our vibrant home showing the vital signs of dying?
Look at the Fever
Global temperatures have already risen about 1.2°C above pre-industrial levels, driving weather extremes once thought biblical. Record heatwaves scorch continents, reducing fertile land to dust. Megadroughts dry up riverbeds, while elsewhere, record floods drown cities. These are not anomalies; they are signs of a climate system being brutally destabilised.
Look at the Haemorrhaging of Life
Scientists say we have entered the Sixth Mass Extinction — caused by human activity. Species are disappearing at 100 to 1,000 times the natural background rate. One million species are projected to be at risk of extinction, many within decades. We are cutting the web of life strand by strand, losing pollinators essential to our food, forests that regulate our air and water, and biodiversity that forms the foundation of planetary health. Every year, millions of hectares of irreplaceable forest vanish, taking with them untold species.
The water bodies absorb much of our excess heat and CO₂, warming and acidifying — endangering marine ecosystems. Over 11 million metric tonnes of plastic waste pour into the seas every year, suffocating life and poisoning the food chain. More than half of the world’s coral reefs — colourful cradles of sea life — are already severely damaged or lost, bleached ghost-white from heat stress.
Most marine debris (80%) comes from trash and debris in urban runoff,
Our Water and Air Bear the Marks
Air pollution, primarily from fossil fuel combustion, causes an estimated seven million premature deaths worldwide annually. Freshwater sources are dwindling or becoming polluted with industrial and agricultural runoff.
These are not just statistics; they are failing vital signs. Loss of biodiversity, climate disruption, ubiquitous pollution — these are indicators of systemic stress, possibly pushing us towards catastrophic tipping points. We talk of progress, but our path resembles that of a parasite overrunning its host.
The resilience of the Earth is vast — but not infinite. The statistics present a grim picture, not of some distant threat, but of a crisis unfolding now. The question is not simply whether the Earth is dying, but how fast we are racing toward its death — and whether we have the will, as a nation and as a species, to change course before the diagnosis becomes fatal.

Nawaz Sharif's London Stay Extended—Political Talks or Health Issues?
ISLAMABAD, April 22: Former Prime Minister and PML-N President Nawaz Sharif has prolonged his visit to London following new medical guidance from global experts. The three-time prime minister is still receiving comprehensive health assessments, which have delayed his return to Pakistan.
Sharif had first come to London from Belarus this month on what was intended to be a brief, two-week medical trip. However, experts tracking his condition advised further treatment and observation, and he extended his stay in the UK capital. Sources close to the PML-N leader confirmed that his medical team advised against travelling immediately because of persistent health issues.
Despite health priorities, Nawaz Sharif is politically active. He continues to have strategic meetings with top PML-N leaders and advisors who are stationed in the UK. The London chapter of the party has started making arrangements to organise a workers’ convention in his name, further emphasising his continued political significance. On April 12, PML-N workers, including top UK-based leader Ahsan Dar, received Sharif at Luton Airport, reflecting the party’s unity overseas.
Sharif’s prolonged stay in London is more than a matter of medical necessity—it also indicates his continued dominance over party policy and internal decision-making at a time of key political transition. With Pakistan facing exigent economic and governance issues, Sharif’s distance from the home front continues to be watched closely by political analysts and business interests alike.

Top Schools in Lahore: A Detailed Look at the Best Educational Institutions
When it comes to education, Lahore is no ordinary city. With a rich history, a flair for the arts, and a booming population of young minds, Lahore has become a hub for some of the best schools in the country. But with so many options out there, how does one decide on the right fit? Here is a list of the top schools in Lahore that don’t just churn out high grades, but nurture creativity, character and critical thinking.
List of Best Schools in Lahore: The Schools that are Shaping the Youth
It’s a battlefield out there. However, only some institutions are able to set themselves apart and become known as the best.
Here are the schools that the whole nation agrees on; perhaps the world too.
1. Aitchison College
When you think of elite education in Lahore, Aitchison College tops the list. And rightfully so. Aitchison College is known for its rich and illustrious history as one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious schools. It was founded during the British colonial period with the main goal of educating the children of Punjab’s ruling class and young men from respectable families.
This historic all-boys institution is more than just a school—it’s a legacy. It has a central 200-acre campus in Lahore containing academic buildings, sports facilities, and boarding homes. Known for its academic severity, the college also has affiliations with esteemed examination centres such as Cambridge and the Agha Khan Examination Centres. It even has its own SAT Centre registered under the American College Board.
The sprawling colonial campus alone feels like stepping into a different world. From horseback riding to cricket on pristine grounds, it offers facilities most schools can only dream of. But what truly sets it apart is the sense of brotherhood, discipline, and quiet confidence its students carry long after they graduate.
Important: Alumni of Aitchison include prime ministers, athletes, diplomats, and business leaders. So if a child is enrolled in Aitchison, there is a high chance that he is studying with one of the biggest names. Or perhaps he is the big name in question.

The investigation team has collected ample evidence against Armughan, Shiraz, and Kamran Qureshi in several cases of kidnapping and murder.
KARACHI, Apr 22: Investigators found a major lead in the Mustafa Amir kidnapping and murder case, where the main suspect, Armughan Qureshi, bought weapons from an illicit arms supplier in Peshawar, Inspector Muhammad Ali, the investigation officer, shared.
Inspector Ali introduced this disclosure at the court proceedings, where he recounted a statement by Kamran Qureshi, Armughan’s father. The authorities documented Kamran’s statement inside prison upon receipt of a court order. He acknowledged that his son had received the weapons from someone named Farhatullah residing in Peshawar.
In an exclusive interview, Inspector Ali confirmed that police had proclaimed Farhatullah a fugitive in the interim challan. Law enforcement officials have already initiated efforts to arrest and trace the arms dealer.
Inspector Ali also informed that he will submit the forensic report and case property next week. In the meantime, he will file the interim challan against co-accused Shiraz and Kamran Qureshi in the special court later this week.
He emphasised that the CCTV footage shows clearly that Armughan has fired at the police officials while conducting the raid, making the case of the prosecution stronger.
The authorities will shortly shift the murder case of Mustafa Amir from Hub, Balochistan, to Karachi to facilitate the trial and investigation process.
The investigation team has collected ample evidence against Armughan, Shiraz, and Kamran Qureshi in several cases of kidnapping, murder, and assault on police. Inspector Ali confirmed that the police will initiate full legal proceedings against the accused to serve justice.
In a parallel development, Judicial Magistrate South’s court, Shahzad Khawaja, conducted a hearing at Karachi Central Jail on Kamran Qureshi on illegal arms and drug charges. The jail administration, however, did not present Kamran in court.
The probe is ongoing at full pace as law enforcers step up efforts to bring all culprits to book.

Pakistan's Mineral Wealth: Control at a Crossroads?
Pakistan rests on a geological goldmine, valued at trillions of dollars in minerals—from Reko Diq’s copper and gold in Balochistan to the massive coal deposits of Thar and precious gemstones scattered across its northern areas. Pakistan’s Mineral. And yet, with this huge potential, there has been one nagging question: Is Pakistan gaining control over its mineral wealth or losing it?
The situation is multifaceted. For decades, the development of these resources has been hindered by a combination of factors: long-term underinvestment, old technology, variable policies, bureaucratic barriers, and high security issues, especially in resource-rich but unstable areas. This has generally translated to Pakistan not having the indigenous capacity – both technical and financial – to develop its mineral industry on its own. As a result, foreign investment has become a requirement.
The Reko Diq Dilemma
The recent revival of the Reko Diq project, this time headed by Barrick Gold, is a good example of this. Such partnerships, while injecting vital capital, skills, and access to the international markets, inevitably lead to concerns about sovereignty and equitable benefits sharing. Arrangements made without tight regulation, transparency, and terms guaranteeing substantial long-term returns to Pakistan and its local population can seem more like takeovers and less like partnerships. The government’s effort like the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) seeks to streamline such foreign investments, but the long-term effects on national control must be carefully examined.
In addition, the ongoing problem of illegal mining, frequently working below the radar or in collusion with locals, is a straightforward loss of control and finances. It not only exhausts resources without adding to the national purse but also generates instability and environmental degradation, eroding state control in targeted regions.
Are We Heading Toward Sustainable Gains?
So, is Pakistan losing control? Maybe it’s better to say Pakistan is having a hard time establishing effective control and strategically managing its mineral resources. The problem isn’t so much overt foreign capture, but rather making sure that development, whether through indigenous effort or foreign collaboration, becomes concrete, sustainable gains for the country. This means strong governance, open contracts, investment in local capacity, strict environmental regulations, and making sure local communities are key beneficiaries. In the absence of a unified national plan covering these aspects, Pakistan stands to lose its buried riches to someone else’s advantage, essentially losing control over its own geological fate.

Is the America-China Tariff War Taking the Shine Off of Luxury
In the world of luxury, perception is everything. Designer brands have carefully cultivated an image of exclusivity, craftsmanship, and heritage for decades. But after a prolonged tariff war between the United States and China, those polished veneers are beginning to crack. What started as a geopolitical trade dispute is now exposing the underbelly of an industry built on illusion—and it’s shaking the foundations of luxury as we know it.
The Exposure Luxury Never Wanted
The luxury industry has always thrived in the shadows. Behind the scenes, high-end labels have quietly relied on Chinese manufacturing to meet global demand, all while clinging to the romance of “Made in Italy” or “Parisian couture.” But with tariffs disrupting global supply chains and triggering a wave of factory closures, that secrecy is now unraveling.
Chinese manufacturers, caught in the crossfire, are revealing long-held contracts with luxury brands. These aren’t mere accessories or components—entire handbags, shoes, and garments are produced in Chinese facilities, only to receive their final stitch or label in Europe. The illusion is broken: what consumers believed were handcrafted heirlooms are increasingly exposed as mass-produced goods with premium price tags.
The Exposure Luxury Never Wanted
The Rise of the “Factory Original”
This reckoning has birthed a new phenomenon—the “factory original.” These are near-identical products manufactured in the same Chinese factories used by luxury brands but sold unbranded, often at a fraction of the price. A handbag that would retail for $2,000 under a designer label can now be purchased for $300, made with the same materials, by the same hands, in the same place.
It’s not counterfeiting. It’s revelation.
And it forces an uncomfortable question: are we paying for quality—or just the name?
The Rise of the “Factory Original”
Luxury’s Vulnerability is Now Visible
While luxury conglomerates like LVMH, Hermès, and Kering might have once believed themselves immune to market volatility, the reality tells a different story. In recent quarters, even the titans have seen profits dip. LVMH, for instance, reported a drop in fashion and leather goods revenue, triggering market anxiety across the luxury sector. The brands blame macroeconomic headwinds and softening consumer demand—but there’s more at play.
Today’s aspirational consumers—the middle-class buyers who once saved for months to afford a single designer piece—are becoming disillusioned. With inflation biting and social values shifting, status symbols don’t hold the same appeal. Quiet luxury, with its muted tones and logo-less designs, has emerged not just as a trend but as a statement: wealth doesn’t need to scream anymore.
The irony? The very audience that luxury brands relied on to sustain their image is now turning away from them.
A New Age of Consumer Awareness
The tariff war has done more than raise prices—it’s raised awareness. Buyers are becoming smarter, more skeptical, and increasingly value-conscious. As more learn about the true origins of luxury goods, they begin to question whether the markup is truly justified. In an age of global transparency and digital access, mystique alone isn’t enough.
Brands can no longer rely on storytelling without substance. A logo, no matter how iconic, can’t hide behind trade secrets forever. When craftsmanship can be replicated, when materials are globally sourced, and when consumers have access to that information—it changes the game.
What Happens Next?
Some brands are trying to pivot. Louis Vuitton has opened production sites in the U.S., aiming to reduce reliance on overseas manufacturing and dodge tariff-induced price hikes. Others are considering similar moves. But the truth is, manufacturing alone won’t save luxury.
To stay relevant, brands must rethink what luxury means in this new world. Transparency can no longer be a liability—it must become a feature. Authenticity must be more than a slogan; it must be evident in every stitch and statement.
The tariff war may have begun as a battle over trade deficits, but its consequences have been far more nuanced. It has pulled back the velvet curtain, forced an industry reckoning, and perhaps, most importantly, empowered the consumer.
Luxury may still sparkle—but the shine now comes with questions. And it’s about time.

How to Prevent Sunburn and Skin Damage this Summer
Let’s be honest: everyone loves a good summer glow. But there’s a fine line between enjoying the sunshine and walking around looking like a lobster with regrets. Sunburn isn’t just annoying and painful — it’s a sign that the skin has been damaged. And over time, that damage adds up in the form of wrinkles, sunspots, and potentially something way more serious like skin cancer. Sike!
The good news? Preventing sunburn and skin damage is totally doable without turning into that person who hides inside all summer. Here’s how to be smart about it — and still enjoy every bit of Vitamin C the season has to offer.
1. Sunscreen Isn’t Optional. It’s the Bare Minimum.
If you’re still only applying sunscreen when you go to the beach, it’s time for a mindset shift. Sunscreen should be part of your everyday routine, not just for vacations and pool days. A broad-spectrum SPF 30 (or higher) is your best friend. Think of it like skincare armor; it protects against UVA rays (which ages the skin) and UVB rays (which burn the skin).
Here’s a tip most people ignore: Use more than you think you need. Most people underapply. And if you’re swimming, sweating, or just existing for more than two hours? Reapply. Yes, even if it’s cloudy.
Sunscreen Isn’t Optional. It’s the Bare Minimum.
2. The Sun is Stronger than You Think
Peak sunlight hours — between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. — are basically a UV warzone for your skin. If you’re planning outdoor time, aim for the early morning or late afternoon. Shade is your friend. No, sitting under a tree doesn’t make you uncool. It makes you someone who values their skin.
Also, invest in a UV index app. Knowing when UV levels are dangerously high helps you avoid unnecessary exposure and take action before you start sizzling.
The Sun Is Stronger Than You Think
3. Clothing Matters (And No, it Doesn’t Have to Look Nerdy)
Some people act like covering up in the summer is a tragedy. It’s not. Long sleeves and pants made from lightweight, breathable fabric can protect your skin without making you melt. Even better, look for clothing with a UPF rating. It’s like sunscreen, but for your clothes.
A wide-brimmed hat? Non-negotiable if you’re serious about keeping your face wrinkle-free. And sunglasses that block UV rays aren’t just about looking cool — they protect your eyes and the skin around them from long-term damage.
Clothing Matters (And No, It Doesn’t Have to Look Nerdy)
4. Think Beyond Sunscreen
Here’s where the real pros shine. Sunscreen is great, but adding extra barriers — like umbrellas, UV-blocking visors, or sun sleeves — gives your skin a break. Especially if you’re at the beach or by the pool, where the sun reflects off water and sand, giving you double the exposure.
And while we’re at it, let’s talk lip balm. Your lips can burn, too, and it hurts like hell. Get a lip balm with SPF and use it often.
Think Beyond Sunscreen
5. Hydration and Diet are Underrated Heroes
Dry, dehydrated skin is more vulnerable to sun damage. So drink more water — especially if you’re in the sun all day. But hydration goes beyond just fluids. Your diet matters too. Foods rich in antioxidants, like berries, leafy greens, and nuts, help your skin fight off damage from the inside out.
It sounds small, but it makes a difference. Your skin will thank you later.
Hydration and Diet Are Underrated Heroes
6. Stop Trusting the Clouds
If you think overcast days mean you can skip protection, think again. UV rays still get through, and they love to sneak up on you when you’re not paying attention. Sunburns on cloudy days are the sneakiest kind because you don’t even see them coming. Don’t be fooled — protect your skin no matter the forecast.
Live the Best Life in Summers
A bit of effort and common sense can go a long way in keeping your skin healthy, glowing, and free from damage. Summer is for living your best life, not nursing sunburns and worrying about skin cancer.
So slather on that SPF, grab a stylish hat, and enjoy the sunshine like a pro.
