A new survey shows that most Punjab residents have a positive view of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s leadership, especially in education, healthcare and infrastructure. However, people remain concerned about employment and inflation.
The Institute of Public Opinion Research (IPOR) conducted the survey across 36 districts in Punjab. It found that 62% of respondents rated Maryam Nawaz’s first year in office as “remarkable” for solving public issues.
In education, 73% of people gave the government a “good” or “very good” rating, while 68% did the same for healthcare. On the other hand, 63% expressed disappointment with job creation efforts, rating them as “poor” or “very poor.”
Overall, 57% of respondents said governance had improved over the past year, while 17% felt it had declined. The same percentage believed the government had addressed major public concerns effectively.
According to the survey, 60% of people in Punjab believe Maryam Nawaz has performed better than the chief ministers of other provinces. Her most praised initiatives include upgrades in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and the “Clean Punjab” campaign.
The report showed a 15% improvement in education, 14% in healthcare, 11% in infrastructure and 11% in cleanliness. Despite these gains, residents listed employment (13%), healthcare services (13%) and inflation control (12%) as the most urgent issues.
The survey also revealed that 53% of respondents feel Punjab’s governance has improved under Maryam Nawaz compared to the previous Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government.
The poll took place between February 3 and 18, gathering input from 66,000 people across both rural and urban areas.

Punjab Zakat Department to Pay Fines for Prisoners
The Punjab Zakat Department started a project to help prisoners who finished their sentences but stay in jail because they can’t pay their fines. The government allocated Rs50 million for this initiative.
The department raised the monthly Zakat allowance for low-income families from Rs1,500 to Rs2,000. It also increased the marriage grant from Rs25,000 to Rs100,000.
Financial aid for over 300,000 Zakat beneficiary families will restart before Eidul Fitr. This support had stopped for 13 months. The government will release funds collected from banks during Ramadan to make this possible.
They asked the inspector general of prisons for a list of eligible prisoners. Officials will start paying fines and releasing prisoners a week before Eid.
Many prisoners, who already served 5 to 10 years, remain in jail only because they can’t afford the fines.

International Women’s Day went by quietly in Faisalabad, with no major government events, rallies, or awareness programmes.
The only official recognition came from Commissioner Mariam Khan, who shared a statement through the information department to show support for Pakistani women. She spent the day in an official meeting about the Ramadan pay order distribution package.
Deputy Commissioner Captain (retd) Nadeem Nasir also had limited involvement, focusing on chairing a District Design and Planning Committee meeting. The committee approved commercial projects like plazas and petrol pumps in the city.
Despite Faisalabad’s large female population, the lack of official events at women’s day stood out compared to previous years. However, the private sector stepped up. Human Rights Focus Pakistan (HRFP) and the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy (TFD) held an event. The event focused on gender equality and the struggles of marginalized women.
Held under the UN theme “For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment,” the event brought together women from different backgrounds to discuss discrimination and the need for collective action. The discussions highlighted gender equality as a key element in achieving the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
HRFP President Naveed Walter stressed that gender equality is a fundamental human right. Yet, he noted that deep-rooted discrimination still limits opportunities for women. Wage gaps and workplace segregation remain major issues.
Walter also pointed out the unique challenges faced by women from religious minority communities, especially Christian and Hindu women. He explained that they face a higher risk of physical, sexual and psychological abuse, along with forced conversions and marriages.
While official recognition was lacking, the private event served as a powerful reminder of the ongoing fight for equality and the need for continued efforts to protect and uplift all women.

India vs New Zealand: Clash for Champions Trophy Glory Today
India will face New Zealand in the Champions Trophy final today in Dubai. This match could be the last match for veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in ODIs. Kohli, 36, and Rohit, 37, have been key players of India for over 15 years. After retiring from T20 internationals last year, this final might be their last ODI appearance, with the next 50-over World Cup set for 2027.
“I’m sure Rohit will lead India to another title,” said former bowler Praveen Kumar. “Virat and Rohit, give us one more ICC trophy before you retire.”
India entered the final as favorites, having won all four of their matches in the tournament. They defeated New Zealand by 44 runs in the group stage, though both teams had already secured semi-final spots. India played all their games in Dubai, avoiding travel to host nation Pakistan due to political tensions.
Kohli silenced critics with an unbeaten 100 against Pakistan and a match-winning 84 against Australia in the semi-final. While Rohit’s highest score has been 41, he provided quick starts, helping India build competitive totals in the played matches.
India aims to win the Champions Trophy for a record third time. Their powerful spin attack has been crucial, as they stuck with the same spin-heavy lineup against Australia, and it paid off again.
New Zealand, hoping for their second title after winning in 2000, reached the final by beating South Africa by 50 runs in Lahore.
Rachin Ravindra, who has Indian roots, has scored 226 runs in the three matches despite an earlier head injury. “We’re not sure how the Dubai pitch will play,” Ravindra said. “We focus on adapting to the conditions and will see what happens on the day.”
While India might have crowd support in the 25,000-seat stadium, New Zealand have recent history on their side. They stunned India with a 3-0 Test whitewash last year and lead their head-to-head record in global white-ball tournaments with nine wins, six losses, and one no-result.
The stage is set for a thrilling final, with cricket fans eager to see whether India lifts another trophy or the Black Caps pull off another upset.

In a groundbreaking advancement that could change the future of computing, Chinese scientists have developed the world’s first carbon-based microchip capable of running artificial intelligence (AI) tasks using a revolutionary ternary logic system.
This innovation, spearheaded by researchers from Peking University and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, marks a significant leap forward in semiconductor technology, potentially surpassing the limitations of traditional silicon-based chips.
The newly developed chip utilises carbon nanotubes (CNTs), a material that offers exceptional mechanical and electrical properties.
CNTs are tiny cylindrical tubes made from graphene sheets, and they have been used primarily as conductive additives in lithium-ion batteries.
However, due to their superior electrical conductivity, excellent stability, and ultra-thin structure, CNTs are now seen as a promising material for the next generation of semiconductors.
This breakthrough differs from conventional silicon chips in that it employs ternary logic instead of the traditional binary system, which uses only zeros and ones.
The new chip processes data not just in ones and zeros, but also in a third state, which enables faster computations while using less energy.
This ternary logic system improves the efficiency of data transmission within the same physical space, allowing for quicker and more energy-efficient computing.
The team of researchers designed a novel carbon nanotube transistor using a concept known as source-gated transistors (SGTs).
By adjusting the gate voltage, the CNT transistor can switch between three distinct current states, thus creating the foundation for ternary logic circuits.
This new design promises to overcome the limitations of current chip technologies, particularly in terms of power consumption and processing speed.
To test the capabilities of their new chip, the researchers built a neural network capable of learning and reasoning by mimicking the connections between neurons in the human brain.
Extensive experiments revealed that the CNT-based neural network achieved perfect accuracy in classifying handwritten digits, demonstrating its vast potential for AI applications, including image recognition and machine learning tasks.
One of the lead researchers, Peng Lianmao, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has been studying carbon-based chip technology for over two decades.
His team has made remarkable progress in developing high-performance CNTs and achieving precise control over nanotube arrays.
In 2020, they fabricated an eight-inch CNT wafer that outperformed similar silicon-based devices in integrated circuit performance.
This achievement cemented China’s position at the forefront of global research in carbon-based semiconductor technology.
The new chip is not only highly efficient but also offers high stability and strong resistance to interference, making it ideal for use in high-performance computing, machine learning, AI, and low-power storage devices.
It also has applications in Internet of Things (IoT) devices, where energy efficiency is a crucial factor.
Despite the many advantages, carbon nanotube chips still lag behind traditional silicon chips in terms of integration density. For example, Nvidia’s RTX 5090 GPU, which was announced in January 2025, contains a staggering 92 billion transistors, far exceeding the current capabilities of CNT technology.
However, the development of carbon-based chips is viewed as the next frontier in semiconductor technology, and China is currently leading the way in this race.
Peng Lianmao expressed his optimism about the future of carbon nanotube-based chips, stating that the ultimate goal is to make them mainstream within the next 10 to 15 years.
If successful, this technology could replace silicon-based chips in a wide range of applications, from supercomputers and data centres to smartphones and other electronic devices.
This transition would mark a significant shift in the semiconductor industry, paving the way for a new era of high-performance, low-power computing solutions.

The recording, which surfaced on Thursday, reportedly features Armaghan’s uncle, Asif Jamil Qureshi, in conversation with a senior police officer.
In the conversation Qureshi identifies himself as the establishment in charge under DIG CIA Muqaddas Haider. He claims in the recording that he had personally ensured Armaghan’s surrender and stayed with him for two hours at a bungalow prior his arrest.
The officer assures Qureshi that Armaghan would not be subjected to torture. He acknowledges that Armaghan was kept in a “good place” due to his uncle’s influence and that the same had been communicated to Armaghan.
The leaked audio also suggests that Qureshi had attempted to offer Rs500,000 to secure additional privileges for his nephew.
The officer is heard rejecting the amount, stating that Armaghan was not a “five-lakh party” and that a prison official had demanded Rs5 million for better conditions in jail.
The two then also discuss the ultimate outcome of the case, aggreing that an ‘agreement’ was the most likely conclusion to be reached by both parties.
Officials have yet to comment on the authenticity of the recording.

We Pakistanis lack awareness of the importance of tax filing and some even mix it up with tax paying; they are not the same thing! Tax filing is simply documenting your income, assets and expenses, while tax paying is simply paying taxes on anything you buy, sell and keep.
This is the national duty of all Pakistanis and must not be skipped at all costs.
But how do you even become a filer in Pakistan? Though perceived as complex, the process can be very simple if one gets a clear-cut idea of the steps involved.
Importance of Tax Filing
Income tax return filing is a legal obligation on all the citizens of the country and is their part to play in the country’s economy. The Income Tax Ordinance Act of 2001 makes it a legal requirement to file your tax returns, as an individual, businessman, or a company.
By tax filing, you can:
Maintain a clear financial record.
Avoid potential audits or unnecessary inquiries from tax authorities.
Build a credible financial profile that can aid you in your future investments and loans.
Who is Eligible to Become a Filer in Pakistan
Before you start to file, check whether or not you are eligible to become a filer. Verify if you come in the following categories of people who are entitled to income tax return filling:
Individual who are earning over a certain amount (for example, PKR 600,000 per year). Check if you come in this income level “threshold.”
People who have a taxable income in the country, despite of their “residential status”, are required to file their tax returns. It doesn’t matter whether you are a resident or a non-resident; income generation from the country means compliance with tax filing.
Lastly, legal age is the most important indicator of eligibility. If your age is 18 years or older, then you are eligible to file your taxes.
Essential Documents Required for Becoming a Tax Filer
Once you have verified that you are eligible for Tax filing, you will have to gather all the important prerequisites. Here is what you will need:
Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs)
National Tax Number (NTN)
Proof of Income
Bank Statements
Proof of Tax Deductions and Credits
Dependent Information
Property & Asset Details
Registered Phone Number
How to Become a Filer in Pakistan? The National Duty of Every Citizen
The Step-by-Step Process of Income Tax Return Filing
Once you have gathered everything, you will officially be starting the “Income Tax Return” filing process. Here are the steps to follow:
Step 1: Obtain Your National Tax Number
Log onto the FBR Website: Open your browser and go to the Federal Board of Revenue’s official website.
Sign Up or Create your Account: Create an account using your CNIC (Computerized National Identity Card) number.
Apply for NTN: Fill out the online form and receive your NTN online, right away.
Step 2: Again, Go to FBR’s IRIS Portal
Log on to the FBR Iris portal through your NTN and password.
Start completing your profile with all the remaining personal details i.e your address, contact information and bank details (these details you are not supposed to share with anyone; they are called “personal” for a reason).
Make sure your email and phone number are verified for your account security.
Step 3: Verify Your NTN Number and Filing Status
After your account is ready, you will need to verify your filer status. Once the NTN pin is added, the FBR will display your current filer status. This indicates whether you are a recognised tax filer, a non-filer, or a provisional filer.
You can also check it through their SMS service by sending your CNIC number to “9966”
Step 4: Start Filing the Income Tax Return Form
Select the relevant income tax return form for the current tax year.
Enter the necessary information regarding your income, expenses and any deductions.
Attach required documents such as salary certificates, bank statements and proof of deductions.
Review all information for accuracy.
Hit the submit button once you are sure everything that you have entered is accurate.
Step 5: Ensure Verification and Acknowledgment
Once you submit the income tax return filing form, FBR will process your return and will send you an acknowledgment with a receipt. Keep this receipt safe as it’s very important in attaining the tax filing certification.
If you have previous due taxes pending, then you will have to clear them first to receive the tax filing certification in time. Settle your taxes through your bank or other convenient payment methods like mobile banking, and make sure to keep a record of every transaction.
Consequences of Being a Non-Filer
Ignoring tax filing isn’t an option. The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) takes non-compliance seriously and not filing promptly can result in serious repercussions like:
High withholding tax (WHT) rates
Restrictions on purchasing property and vehicles
SIM card blocking
Higher Taxes on Banking Transactions
Legal action and confiscation of property
Visa and travel restrictions
Ineligibility for government contracts and tenders
Restrictions on loans and credit
Checking the Filer Status/FBR Active Taxpayer List
For regular compliance, you need to keep yourself up to date with your filing status. Here is how you can check that:
Method 1
For individuals, text “ATL [your 13-digit CNIC Number]” to 9966.
To check for AJ&K taxpayers, text “AJKATL [your CNIC without dashes]” to 9966.
Method 2
You can download the Active Taxpayers List from the FBR Active Taxpayer List link and look for your name.
Become a Responsible Citizen Today
If you are ignoring the tax filing process, you are putting yourself in trouble. Being a Tax filer is more than just a legal obligation; it’s a step toward financial discipline. You will not only be a responsible citizen but also contribute to national development by making it easier for the government to keep check and balance.
Do it now and free yourself from legal hassles and penalties!

Pakistani dramas have a unique ability to touch hearts, especially those with compelling stories that celebrate the strength and resilience of their characters. This Women’s Day, why not immerse ourselves in stories that revolve around powerful female characters, women who stood up, broke our societal barriers, fought for justice and truth and truly inspired us?
In this article we’ll list a few dramas; these dramas are a perfect reminder of how women shape the world with their unwavering strength.
Zindagi Gulzar Hai
Zindagi Gulzar Hai would always remain a classic for a reason. Kashaf is the kind of character who stays with you long after the drama ends. She grew up facing hardships, carrying the weight of her family’s struggles as the eldest daughter and had to navigate her life holding on to the trauma and beliefs she grew up with. Her journey from bitterness to self-acceptance and eventually to love is raw and so real. It’s a story that reminds us how daughters/women often carry the world on their shoulders, and in the end, they still rise, stronger than ever.
Shehr-e-Zaat
Falak’s journey in Shehr-e-Zaat is one of the most soul-stirring narratives ever told in a Pakistani drama. It’s about a woman who has everything but still feels lost. When life shatters her illusion of perfection, she embarks on a spiritual quest to find her true self. This drama gave us chills, had us crying, and left us on the path to reflect on our actions and be better people. It beautifully captured the inner battles women fight: the need for validation, the pressure to fit into societal moulds and the eventual realisation that self-love and inner peace are the real victories one can get.
Udaari
Udaari is not an easy watch, but it’s a critical one. It fearlessly addresses child abuse and portrays women who refuse to stay silent in the face of injustice, highlighting their journey and the strength it took them. Meera’s character, a singer who fights to protect her loved ones, is a powerful reminder of the lengths women go to for the people they care about. It’s a drama that makes you cry, makes you angry and most of all, makes you admire the courage it takes to stand against a broken cultural system.
Khaas
Saba’s story in Khaas is painfully relatable for many women. It shows the reality of emotional abuse many women go through and how it slowly chips away at a person’s confidence and self-worth. But the beauty of this drama lies in Saba’s transformation. She rebuilds herself piece by piece, struggling to get out of a toxic marriage, and moving on. She ultimately learns that walking away from toxicity is not weakness but the ultimate act of self-love and respect you can give to yourself.
Khaas
Cheekh
If you’re looking for a drama that’ll have you screaming at your screen, Cheekh is it. Mannat’s relentless fight for justice after her friend’s murder is gut-wrenching but so incredibly powerful. She loses almost everything, but her resolve just never breaks. The story is a raw depiction of what it means to be a woman who refuses to back down, no matter what it costs her.
Dil Na Umeed Toh Nahi
This drama dives into the harsh realities of human trafficking and shows the intertwined lives of women who are fighting for their freedom. It’s heartbreaking but hopeful, a reminder that even in the worst circumstances, women together find ways to lift each other, share strength and help hold on to each other’s dreams.
Baaghi
Inspired by real-life events, Baaghi tells the story of a woman who dared to live life on her own terms, despite the judgement and cruelty she faced. She challenged the rooted societal norms and paid the price for her audacity by the ever-so-perfect and just men. It’s a hard watch, especially knowing how society punishes women for stepping outside ‘the lines.’ But it’s also a powerful tribute to every woman who’s ever been told she’s “too much” (tbh every single woman.)
Churails
Churails is wild, chaotic and unapologetically fierce. The story follows a group of women running a secret agency to expose cheating husbands, but it’s so much more than that. It shatters stereotypes and tackles issues like domestic violence and body shaming. The show portrays that sometimes women have to become the “villains” to fight for what’s right (hence the play on the word churails.)
Rehaai is incredibly heartbreaking to watch, but the way the characters find hope and push for the much-needed change makes it an incredibly empowering story. This drama highlights the horrors of child marriages and shows the strength of women who fight for their future generations.
Dobara
Dobara breaks the stereotype that life ends and stops for women after a certain age. It follows Mehru, a widow who rediscovers herself and finds love again, despite the judgement she faces. It’s a beautiful reminder that women have every right to seek happiness, no matter where they are in life.
Why These Stories Matter
These dramas do more than entertain; they start conversations, break taboos and show the world what women are capable of. They remind us that every woman has a story worth telling, whether it’s a story of survival, self-discovery, or simply choosing happiness in a world that often denies happiness to them.
This Women’s Day, let’s celebrate the women in our lives and the women on our screens who inspire us to be braver, kinder and unapologetically ourselves.

Pakistan cricket never runs out of debates, and the latest one comes from former pacer Mohammad Amir. He isn’t too happy with the appointment of Salman Ali Agha as Pakistan’s new T20I captain. In fact, he believes the job should have gone to Mohammad Haris instead.
Speaking in a recent interview, Mohammad Amir acknowledged Agha Salman’s contributions in ODIs and Tests but questioned his appointment in the shortest format.
Instead, he pointed towards Haris, highlighting his leadership experience with Pakistan Shaheens and the Champions Cup.
“Haris is captaining everywhere. He led the Pakistan Shaheens, and he also captained in the Champions Cup,” Amir stated, emphasizing that Haris has already been groomed for leadership.
At just 23 years old, Haris is eight years younger than Agha Salman. His aggressive playing style fits the modern T20 approach, making him a strong long-term option for Pakistan’s leadership.
For Amir, the decision was simple: If Pakistan was looking for a fresh captain, they should have gone with someone already groomed for the role.
While he didn’t get the captaincy, Haris has made his way back into the national side. He has been called up for Pakistan’s upcoming T20I series against New Zealand, set to begin this month.
The series, which runs from March 16 to April 5, will feature five T20Is followed by three ODIs. Haris, who last played a T20I for Pakistan in 2023, will be eager to make an impact.
With just nine T20Is under his belt, he has scored 126 runs at a strike rate of 127.27. Now, with a fresh opportunity ahead, he’ll be looking to prove why Mohammad Amir—and many others—see him as a future leader.

Another ICC tournament, another controversy. This time, it’s all about scheduling of the ongoing ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025. Former England cricketer and popular commentator David Lloyd didn’t hold back, calling the entire setup “farcical” and “embarrassing.” And honestly, he’s got a point.
A Travel Nightmare for South Africa
Imagine preparing for a crucial semifinal, only to be thrown into a chaotic travel mess just before the big game. That’s exactly what happened to South Africa. With the venues finalized less than 48 hours before the match, the Proteas had to fly from Dubai to Lahore and then back again.
David Lloyd, never one to shy away from speaking his mind, called out the ICC in a fiery video on social media. “It’s really embarrassing that this is one of the most important events in world cricket, and the arrangements for playing are farcical,” he said.
The scheduling confusion didn’t just affect South Africa. Both Australia and the Proteas were left in the dark, waiting for India’s match against New Zealand to decide their next move.
It meant they had to travel to Dubai, unsure of where they’d be playing next. For a tournament of this magnitude, that’s just unacceptable. On top of that, Dubai hosted two major games in just three days, further fueling concerns about poor planning.
Lloyd, clearly frustrated, slammed the ICC’s approach, saying, “You have teams who go from here to there; you might play here, you might not, you might have to go back.”
David Lloyd also hinted at what many fans have been whispering—was the scheduling favoring India? With Dubai as their home base, India had the luxury of playing in a consistent environment throughout the tournament. They made the most of it, beating Australia in the semifinal before marching into the final.
“The fact that you have two games in three days in Dubai… it’s just not right,” Lloyd concluded. And honestly, he’s not alone in thinking that.
This isn’t the first time ICC tournaments have faced criticism for poor scheduling, and it probably won’t be the last. But when a legendary figure like David Lloyd calls it “laughable,” it’s time for cricket’s governing body to take a hard look at its planning process.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has apologised after facing backlash for a social media post referencing Pope Francis in the context of The Ashes. The post was made in response to the Pope’s Ash Wednesday message, where he reflected on the significance of ashes in faith.
His post stated, “The #Ashes remind us of who we are, which does us good. It puts us in our place, smooths out the rough edges of our narcissism, brings us back to reality and makes us more humble and open to one another. None of us is God; we are all on a journey.”
In reply, the ECB wrote, “Even the Pope loves the Ashes,” making a lighthearted reference to the England vs. Australia Test series. While some found it humorous, many criticised it as insensitive, given that Pope Francis has been hospitalised since February 14 with double pneumonia and a complex lung infection. His condition is reportedly stable, but his health remains a concern.
Following the backlash, the ECB swiftly deleted the post and issued an apology. An ECB spokesperson stated, “This was an ill-judged post and was swiftly deleted. We apologise for any offence.” Pope Francis is known for using social media to share messages of faith, but this response from the ECB did not sit well with many of his supporters.
The controversy highlights the increasing scrutiny sports organisations face over their social media presence. Many are calling for a more thoughtful and measured approach to public communication, especially when engaging with sensitive topics.
