The 2025 Alibaba.com Pakistan Supplier Export Summit brought together more than 500 SME representatives from Sialkot

Sialkot, Pakistan, December 18, 2024 – Alibaba.com, a leading global business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce platform, today announced the launch of Trade Assurance in Pakistan, enabling local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to trade with enhanced confidence. With this launch, Pakistan joins the ranks of a select few markets where Alibaba.com has introduced this valued service for suppliers.

The launch was announced at the 2025 Alibaba.com Pakistan Supplier Export Summit, held in Sialkot, a hub of industrial excellence. At the event, Alibaba.com shared insights into the growth opportunities and emerging trends within the global apparel industry, which is projected to reach a market size of $1.79 trillion in 2024, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.81% from 2024 to 20281.

“Alibaba.com’s decision to hold the Pakistan Supplier Export Summit in Sialkot underscores the city’s industrial importance and potential,” said Ikram Ul Haq, President of the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry. “This event has brought immense value to our local businesses by connecting them with global opportunities and introducing the tools needed to succeed in international markets. Initiatives like this reflect Alibaba.com’s dedication to supporting Sialkot’s SMEs to grow and thrive on a global scale.”

Bringing Peace of Mind to Pakistani Suppliers

Global B2B trade can be fraught with challenges, including concerns over costs, product quality, shipment timelines, and more. Trade Assurance, a proprietary order protection service offered by Alibaba.com, alleviates some of these risks, providing both suppliers and buyers with confidence throughout the entire transaction process. Suppliers who opt for this service can conduct business with peace of mind, knowing that their transactions are securely safeguarded by a trusted platform. The service stipulates that the buyer makes payment at the time of purchase, with the funds held in escrow by Alibaba.com until the buyer confirms the satisfactory receipt of the order within a reasonable timeframe.

“Pakistan represents a high-potential supplier market for Alibaba.com, boasting robust production capabilities and a diverse range of product categories that capture substantial global buyer interest. To capitalize on this potential, we have introduced the Trade Assurance service in Pakistan. Restrictions on X Causing Minimal Impact as Less than 2% Pakistanis Use It

The ban on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has created a heated debate in Pakistan. State Minister for IT Shaza Fatima Khawaja clarified that the decision, taken by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) under directives from the Ministry of Interior, has very minimal implications, affecting just 2% of the population.

Balancing Security and Connectivity

Responding to a question in the National Assembly, the minister pointed out that the restriction on X is not free speech under attack. She defended it by saying that it falls in keeping with national security priorities at sensitive periods like when the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation or SCO had their summit recently.

To address the connectivity issue, Khawaja explained that there is quick reaction from the government. “Teams worked overnight to address such disruptions to cause minimal impact upon users,” she said

Potential of Improvement

While Khawaja noted a 28% improvement in internet speeds and a 24% increase in mobile internet users over the past year, challenges remain. Pakistan ranks 198th globally in internet speed, according to the World Population Review. With an average mobile internet download speed of 19.59 Mbps and a broadband speed of 15.52 Mbps, the country lags behind war-torn Palestine, Bhutan, and even Libya.

This is in stark contrast to global leaders like the UAE, where internet speeds are over 200 Mbps. Neighbouring countries like Iran and India also outperform Pakistan in connectivity.

Investments in Digital Infrastructure

The government is putting its emphasis on fibre-optic infrastructure as part of the strategy to improve digital access. LTO Karachi Sets New Record with 20% Tax Collection Growth

The Large Taxpayer Office Karachi has shown improvement in tax collection. It has reached new heights with a benchmark of 20% over the same period of last calendar year. According to the LTO Karachi, the provincial government received Rs1,110 billion in taxes during the first five months of FY 2024-25. It shows a noteworthy increase from Rs924 billion in the same period of the last fiscal year.

The direct tax collection also registered a significant 20% increase to Rs542 billion compared to Rs451 billion last year. Moreover, LTO Karachi disbursed refunds of Rs47 billion during the said period.

This growth was mainly due to increased local activity as seen in the increased local transactions. Just the sales tax collection was up 30% to Rs203 billion. However, the FBR sources revealed that the collection of import sales tax faced challenges because of a decline in import bills.

Despite these achievements, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has faced criticism from its officers. The Inland Revenue Service Officers Association (IRSOA) has blamed tax administration and policies for the shortfall in tax collection targets. In a statement, the IRSOA rejected claims that officers were at fault for the shortfall, attributing the failure to flaws in the administration and policies.

The association also criticised the FBR’s transformation plan, calling it a “show-piece” that has caused dissatisfaction among tax officials. They highlighted that 80% of junior field tax officers have the lowest salaries and lack access to basic facilities such as transport, fuel, and residential options. Furthermore, large-scale transfers to remote areas have created logistical difficulties. The IRSOA emphasised that frequent transfers and corruption allegations are damaging the officers’ reputation and morale. “Harsh administrative practices and poor tax policies are undermining the officers’ capabilities and morale,” he stated.

Sara Sharif Murder Case: Father, Stepmother Jailed for Life

The tragic murder of 10-year-old Sara Sharif revealed significant failures in the child protection system. Her father, Urfan Sharif (42) and stepmother, Beinash Batool (30), received life sentences for her murder. Sara’s uncle, Faisal Malik (29), received a 16-year sentence for causing or allowing her death. Justice John Cavanagh stated that Sara’s death resulted from “years of neglect, frequent assaults and what can only be described as the torture of this small child.”

During the trial, prosecutors shared shocking details. Urfan Sharif confessed to UK police that he “legally punished” Sara. He admitted, “I beat her up too much,” though he claimed he didn’t mean to kill her. On August 10, 2023, police discovered Sara’s body under a blanket in her bunk bed. She had over 70 fresh injuries, including burns, fractures and bite marks, along with older wounds. After her death, Sharif, Batool and Malik fled to Pakistan with their five other children.

The court also revealed that Sara’s father made her wear a hijab to hide her bruises. Despite her suffering, a video taken two days before her death showed her dancing and smiling. Her smile regardless of the abuse showed nothing but bravery.

Despite multiple warnings, social services failed to intervene. Her father removed her from school to avoid investigations, leaving her without an education. Rachel De Souza, Children’s Commissioner for England, called this a “heartbreaking reminder” of the system’s weaknesses. She added, “We have failed time and time again to correct them.”

Sara’s mother, Olga Sharif, condemned the perpetrators. She called them “cowards, sadists and executioners” and added, “She is now an angel who looks down on us from heaven. She is no longer experiencing violence.” In response, Surrey County Council pledged to review the case and look at how they could have protected Sara.
