The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has rejected a proposed tax amnesty that would allow individuals to buy high-value properties, flats or housing units without disclosing their source of income. In a National Assembly Sub-Committee on Finance and Revenues meeting led by MNA Bilal Azhar Kiani, Hassan Bakhshi from the Association of Builders and Developers of Pakistan (Abad) presented proposals for the Tax Laws Amendment Bill 2024. Abad proposed allowing non-filers to purchase properties worth up to Rs25 million, reducing their initial demand of Rs50 million. However, FBR stood firm against the proposal.
The FBR’s Member Tax Policy clarified that tax amnesty could not be granted. Under the proposed amendment bill, only properties valued below Rs10 million can be purchased without additional requirements. Buyers of properties exceeding Rs10 million must prove their declared worth in previous tax returns. To facilitate this, FBR plans to launch an app for voluntary return amendments, allowing buyers to meet the required eligibility.
The sub-committee has yet to finalise its recommendations and will reconvene on Friday (today) to develop a proposal for the NA Standing Committee on Finance.

On Thursday investigators recovered the black boxes from an American Airlines passenger plane involved in a midair collision with a US Army helicopter over Washington’s Potomac River, killing 67 people on board.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed on Friday that it had recovered both the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder from the Bombardier passenger jet.
“The recorders are at the NTSB labs for evaluation,” the agency said in a post on X.
Jennifer Homendy, NTSB Chairman, earlier assured reporters that the agency would ‘leave no stone unturned’ in its probe into the incident, the first fatal U.S commercial airline crash since 2009.
“We are going to conduct a thorough investigation of this entire tragedy, looking at the facts,” Homendy said.

Virat Kohli not in the ‘Fab Four’? That’s a shocker! But according to legendary Australian captain Ricky Ponting, the Indian superstar no longer makes the cut. Instead, Ponting’s list includes Steve Smith, Joe Root, and Kane Williamson—leaving Kohli out of the conversation.
Kohli’s Recent Struggles
Kohli hasn’t been at his best lately, and his performances in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia didn’t help. Sure, he kicked things off with a century in the first Test, but after that, things went south.
Across five matches, he managed just 190 runs. For a player of his calibre, that’s below par. Ponting acknowledged that Kohli was once unmatched. Five years ago, he was the benchmark, scoring runs for fun across all formats.
But times have changed, and the other three have outperformed him in Test cricket over the last few years.
“Five or six years ago, when this big four emerged, with [Virat] Kohli being one of those as well, Joe was probably down near the bottom part of that because he hadn’t made the hundreds the other guys had made, but he’s made 19 hundreds in the past four years,” Ponting told The Sydney Morning Herald.
Steve Smith Leading the Charge
While Kohli struggled, Steve Smith has been in phenomenal form. He smashed 141 runs in the first Test against Sri Lanka, marking his third century in just four matches. That innings also saw him reach the 10,000-run milestone in Test cricket—becoming only the fourth Australian to do so.
Ponting didn’t hold back in praising his fellow Aussie. “Is he [Steve Smith] the best player of his generation? It’s hard to argue against it,” he added.
“Joe Root is the other one now, and [Kane] Williamson’s record is outstanding as well. Joe’s last couple of years have elevated him right back up there, I think.”
He also pointed out that Joe Root’s resurgence has been remarkable. In the last four years, Root has piled up 19 Test centuries—numbers that put him right up there with the best. Kane Williamson, too, has been a model of consistency, making the Fab Four debate even more intense.
Ponting admitted that opinions on the best batter of this generation vary based on nationality.
Ask an Aussie, and they’ll say Steve Smith.
Ask an Englishman, and it’s Joe Root.
Ask a Kiwi, and they’ll pick Kane Williamson.
But when you look purely at numbers, Smith, Root, and Williamson have edged ahead of Kohli in the longest format.
What’s Next for Kohli?

Marsh’s season has been far from ideal. He struggled during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India, scoring just 73 runs in seven innings. His bowling was limited, and fitness concerns followed him throughout the series.
After returning home, he played just one BBL match before taking a break to refresh physically and mentally for the Champions Trophy. But the back issues persisted, and now he’s sidelined.
A Cricket Australia statement confirmed the injury, calling it “lower back pain and dysfunction.” The selectors decided that [Mitchell] Marsh needed an extended period of rehab rather than risking further complications.
Who Replaces Marsh?
With Mitchell Marsh out, Australia must rethink their balance. A few names are already in the mix:
Jake Fraser-McGurk: The explosive youngster could be a like-for-like replacement at No.3, but he’s yet to prove himself in List A cricket.
Will Sutherland: A solid allrounder who was set for an ODI tour last year before a back injury ruled him out.

Adding to Australia’s headaches, Pat Cummins is also uncertain for the tournament due to an ankle injury. If he misses out, Australia will need a new captain. Steven Smith, Travis Head, and Josh Inglis are all potential candidates.
Marsh played a crucial role in Australia’s 2023 ODI World Cup win, smashing centuries against Pakistan and Bangladesh. Since moving up the order in early 2023, he has averaged 44.54 with a strike rate of 109.13.
Replacing him won’t be easy. But Australia has until February 11 to make changes to their squad without ICC approval.
Before the Champions Trophy kicks off, they have two ODIs in Sri Lanka on February 12 and 14. These games could be the perfect chance to test out replacements and finalize the squad.

On Thursday, Azad Jammu and Kashmir Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwarul Haq announced that Kashmir Solidarity Day will be observed on February 5 to show support for the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJ&K).
Anwarul Haq stated this during the 29th meeting of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir cabinet, attended by the ministers and high officials of the government.
The meeting approved the decisions made in the 27th and 28th cabinet sessions.

Karachi, 30 January, 2025 – Security Papers Limited (SPL) has announced its unaudited financial results for the half year ended December 31, 2024. The company has achieved robust growth, with a remarkable 7.5% rise in after-tax profit compared to the same period last year, alongside a 7.5pc increase in earnings per share (EPS).
During H1 FY2024-25, SPL reported net sales of Rs. 4.1 billion, a notable increase from Rs. 3.4 billion, driven by strong demand across key product lines.
SPL’s after-tax profit for H1 FY2024-25 reached Rs. 802 million, marking a 7.5pc increase over Rs. 746 million from H1 FY2023-24. Earnings per share (EPS) for the period came in at Rs. 13.54, compared to Rs. 12.59 last year.
