In order to address one of the key challenges hindering economic growth of Pakistan to its full potential, State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has launched a national dialogue on its forthcoming policy to reduce the gender gap in financial inclusion. Dr. Reza Baqir, Governor SBP hosted a webinar titled “Launch of Consultation on Banking on Equality policy: Reducing the Gender Gap in Financial Inclusion” on Monday, December 21, 2020.

The webinar featured an exclusive panel discussion around women’s financial inclusion with international thought leaders in the area of gender and finance including Princess Zahra Aga Khan, Director Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN); Ms. Ceyla Pazarbasioglu, Director of Strategy, Policy and Review Department, IMF; and Dr. Reza Baqir Governor, SBP. Dr. Anita Zaidi, President of Gender Equality at Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation moderated the discussion.

Deputy Governor SBP, Ms Sima Kamil made a presentation on the state of women’s financial inclusion in the economy and shared the features of the Banking on Equality policy. The webinar was attended by diverse local and international stakeholders representing public offices, international agencies, banks and associations. In addition, nearly 1,000 people also watched the webinar live through social media platforms.

Governor SBP, Dr. Reza Baqir, in his opening remarks said that improved gender parity in financial and economic opportunities can enhance overall socio-economic development outcomes of a nation, for not just the present but future generations. He noted that the event had three key goals. The first objective was to bring attention to the shared goal of reducing the gender gap in women’s financial inclusion.

The second goal was to share the content of the Banking on Equality policy that was being launched for consultation. Finally, the third goal was to get feedback from stakeholders on the policy itself. He welcomed the feedback that was provided by the international participants and others that would be provided over the course of next several weeks.

He noted that central banks in developing and emerging markets, where there are often market failures, have an important role to play in ensuring that important sections of the society don’t get left out from benefitting from the financial system through access to saving, borrowing, insurance and other financial products.

He said that the SBP looked forward to working with other domestic and international partners to further the cause of improving women’s financial inclusion. In this context he also appreciated the support being provided by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for helping advance SBP’s agenda on promoting financial inclusion in Pakistan.

In her presentation Deputy Governor SBP, Ms. Sima Kamil, noted that the gender gap in financial inclusion is rising. She noted that only 11.7 million, or 18% of the adult women, have active bank accounts compared to 51% for men.

Deputy Governor Kamil unveiled five key pillars of the Banking on Equality policy under which actions are targeted towards improving institutional diversity, product diversification and development capability, customer acquisition and facilitation approaches towards women segments, gender disaggregated data collection, and prioritizing gender focus in SBP’s policies. The policy recommendations will be applicable on all banks, microfinance banks, DFIs and EMIs.

During the panel discussion, Princess Zahra Aga Khan, Director AKDN, shared her views on how to make headways in the gender diversity landscape, and also shared her experience on what steps can make a difference. Ms Ceyla Pazarbasioglu, Director IMF, gave her valuable thoughts on the importance of gender diversity in financial service providers that can improve overall women’s financial inclusion in a country. She also shed light on key demand and supply side barriers that globally exist for women’s low financial inclusion.

Now, as the consultation process has commenced, SBP will conduct series of focused stakeholders’ consultation sessions with commercial banks, microfinance banks, women working in FIs, prominent female thought leaders, women chambers, women entrepreneurs and housewives to get more feedback. Based on the broader feedback, the policy will be further enriched. After the feedback is complete, the policy is expected to be launched in early February 2021. The elements that the scholarship cover are airfare, tuition fees, stipend (living allowance), warm clothing allowance, study travel grants, and paid mid-term visit (airfare) to your home country. If you are traveling with your family, they will also provide family allowances. So you can attain education for the next four years worry-free.

Here is an important detail, however. The candidate needs to submit two applications; one for the commonwealth and the other for HEC. Failure to submit even one will lead to disqualification of the candidate.

The IPG Group Bags Exclusive Rights For SCA T10

Singapore: Singapore Cricket Association (SCA) has awarded the marketing and organizing rights for the SCA T10 Cricket to Dubai/Pakistan based Innovative Production Group (IPG). Five companies had submitted an expression of interest (EOI) after SCA had floated an RFP (request for proposal) for the sale of rights in August this year. The IPG Group has emerged as the highest bidder for the rights. This is the second major cricket league for which the IPG Group has bagged the rights after the successful Lanka Premier League (LPL) in Sri Lanka.

A virtual contract signing ceremony was hosted jointly by SCA and IPG Group in compliance with Covid guidelines on 16th December 2020 where SCA President Mr. Mahmood Gaznavi signed the contract documents on behalf of host Governing Body SCA in the presence of Deputy President Mr. Subir Ghatak, Vice Presidents Mr. Manesh M and Mr. S Santhanam, Hon. Treasurer Mr. Neeraj S and CEO of the SCA Mr. Saad Khan Janjua.

Managing Director of the IPG Group, Mr. Jawad Ghulam Rasool added, “The IPG Group will work closely with SCA and will always thrive to add value to the existing cricketing eco-system in Singapore.”

The 10-year rights bagged by the IPG Group include TV & digital broadcasting rights, production rights, franchisee sales rights and league management rights. This is the first T10 league where both men and women’s teams will be participating. The first year will have six teams in the fray and the number will be increased to eight teams from the third year onwards. The league is scheduled to be held in the second half of 2021 in Singapore.

Islamabad To Introduce Electric Train In Upcoming Safari Park

Islamabad zoo was established in 1978, but recently, it has gathered several people’s attention. And it has not been getting the positive attention one seeks, rather it has all been quite negative. Amidst animals dying, the poor condition they are kept in, or being taken away from the zoo to better countries and better places, the Zoo has finally had something good to look up to. The authorities are planning to install electric trains at the zoo.

The zoo that previously housed Suzie and Kaavan is now going to get its own Wildlife Safari Park. This will become one of the tourist attractions built under the idea of a pollution-free amusement park. This is an initiative by the Ministry of Climate Change. In talks with a publication, the Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Climate Change discussed wildlife conservation and information center. The main goal, according to SAPM Malik Amin Aslam, was to spread public awareness on local flora and fauna.

And even without many animals that have been shipped away, the 10 hectares of land is home to many species that the tourists can learn more about. So these indigenous species will be protected in the conservation center.

This is a landmark news because, in 2018, 30 animals died in Pakistan when the new zoo in Peshawar opened.

Now that all the animals of the Islamabad Zoo have left and it has been closed for the public as well as the officials, the work to change it into an amusement park will officially start soon with an electric train taking tourists around the 10 hectares, probably more, of the land expanse. This will hopefully lead to a positive impact on the tourism industry of the country.

Drunk Woman In Lahore Caught Assaulting A Police Officer

A situation involving alcohol, a woman and a police officer got out of hand in Lahore’s posh area yesterday. As disappointing as the event may be, it is sadly a routine.

Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop

Sources have confirmed that the restaurant was Gloria Jeans in which this incident happened although now reports are leaving out the name. A woman at said restaurant, in DHA, was consuming alcohol in public. Naturally, a police guard came and asked her to stop this activity as it is illegal too.

To what effect did he stop her? She started abusing him! Not just verbally but also literally and there are videos that prove that.

What Action Is Being Taken?

The suspect got in the car with her friends after and left the scene. The restaurant has also reported that she heavily misbehaved with the staff of the restaurant before too. After the videos went viral, CCPO Umar Sheikh took notice of it and promised that he suspects would be arrested in no time.

Moreover, he applauds the said guard for not responding to the woman physically despite her misbehaviour.

The Elites and The Educated, Represent!

This incident occurred at the most posh area of Lahore, where restaurants are flooded with the so-called elites and the so-called literate people. Such is the state of such prestigious people, that when they are denied something, their privilege instructs them to start getting physically abusive.

If a guard ever stopped a woman from a lower economic background, do you think she would respond this way? Never! The woman responded like she did because she knows her ‘money’ and her ‘connections’ will help her evade accountability. If the leaders of this country can do that, so can she!

If The Tables Were Turnt

This situation is incredibly problematic also because of the fact that the woman felt she had a right to thrash the police officer. If the tables were turned and there was a policewoman who had stopped a male from something, would we accept the male hitting the female officer?

The question remains: people need to raise their voice against this more loudly!

The fact that the guard in question was a male is not grounds to assume he can be hit. Had he responded, given the woman delivered the first hit, would we accept that?

TikTok has been that one platform that has provided everyone with an equal opportunity to become famous. Now, while some people use their talent to get recognized, some people try other tactics. These tactics include having fake scandals, incidents, and even deaths. It does bring them in the news, they get followers, and then after some time, they seek social media to explain how it is fake news, and they were innocent in all this.

It hasn’t been much time really when Adil Rajput, a Tiktoker had adopted this strategy. He wanted to gain followers. His wife was a part of the hoax. She made a video as well where she was crying, confirming the news. It all fell apart when their fans started gathering around their residence and caught a glimpse of Adil walking around very much alive.

Naila Jutt Fakes Death

Naila Jutt, it seems, is following in the footsteps of Adil Rajput. Last week, a picture went viral of Naila Jutt, which claimed that she had passed away. In those voice notes, it was implied that she was very much a part of this plot. And her voice claims that it is an excellent way to increase fan following.

There are quite a lot of scandals and news that erupted in social media every day. They can be often seen between celebrities and even between a celebrity and a fan. There are some actors and actresses who are known to not treat their fans nicely. Then there are examples like Keanu Reeves, Tom Hanks, and Emilia Clarke, who treat their fans like royalty. Of course, it is because of the fans that the personality has seen a rise in their careers.

It is crucial to them that their people support them. Similarly, there have been clashes between celebrities as well as allegations. Some have turned out to be true, others have been redeemed as false. The absolute truth is what the involved parties know and the twisted version is what is sometimes displayed.

One such case that has been going on for a while is the Harassment allegation against Ali Zafar. After Meesha Shafi came forward, some more women followed suit. Now, Ali Zafar has tweeted in response to an Alleged Exposure of Meesha Shafi.

It is of utmost vital for an authority to evaluate both sides of the coin. Meesha Shafi came forward with an allegation. The authorities involved, the investigators, have no reason to question the victim’s motives or reasons. In law enforcement, it is taught that, whatever the victim is telling you, you have to treat it as the truth. Not believing the victim, first and foremost, is a hint towards a botched investigation.

Then, this whole event became quite viral due to outrage from both sides. Ali Zafar fans claimed he was innocent and referred to the other side with some unsanitary remarks. Meesha Shafi’s fans claimed she really was a victim in this. The ‘Me Too’ term was also used during this time.

From a video released by ‘Pakistan Observer’, they state that proof has come forward about some illegal ongoings. The video says that Meesha Shafi’s lawyer, Nighat Dad, has been involved in doing some allegedly illegal work under cover of the organization that stands with ‘Me Too’. The #metoo movement has a solid standing because it stands up for the right thing.

Ali Zafar has responded to this news, as you can see above. He states ‘Unbelievable’ and follows that by the use of the ‘Me Too’ hashtag. Now, one can say that this is a misuse of the hashtag because the context that’s being used in is not what it was meant to be used in. There are a lot of murky waters surrounding this case, but the truth cannot stay hidden.

The involved parties know who is at fault in this entire case. It is advised to you not wholly adhere to an opinion unless you know both sides of the story. If an organization has been allegedly exposed, it does not mean that the initial allegation is wrong. These are two separate incidents.
