Asya Branch, First Black Woman To Be Crowned ‘Miss USA 2020’

From Miss Mississipi to Miss USA

Meet Asya Branch, formerly known as Miss Mississippi USA, was named Miss USA for the year 2020 on Monday night. The Miss USA pageant, initially held in spring 2020, was rescheduled because of the coronavirus pandemic. The branch was crowned by Miss USA 2019, Cheslie Kryst.

Asya Branch is a 22-year-old and a native of Booneville. She has made history by becoming the first Black woman from her state to take Miss USA’s crown. The branch is a graduate of the University of Mississippi, and her plans are incredible! As Miss USA, she will now move on to compete for Miss Universe 2021.

Branch’s victory is made all the more tremendous by the fact that she defeated 50 other contestants. 

What’s The Cause Of Her Victory?

We’ve seen movies of pageantries, have we not? There is a segment when finalists have to speak on a political topic. The topic is taken out of a box, so it’s an absolute surprise to the contenders. Branch offered her thoughts on gun control.

“As someone who grew up in a home with guns, I learned at an early age how to load, how to fire and gun safety, and I think that education should be available to everyone,” Branch said. “We should require people to pass training and safety courses before they’re allowed to purchase a gun or before receiving a permit. I think it’s important that we do not ban guns. People will find a way to get what they want anyway. But I think it’s our Second Amendment right, and we just need more safety surrounding that.”

Is Branch A Trump Supporter?

Sources point out that branch also sang the national anthem at a Trump rally in Mississippi in October 2018. Many articles show an Instagram post from Branch that says, “Incredible honor to sing the national anthem tonight in Southaven for the President Trump rally.” 

The post, however, no longer appears on Branch’s Instagram page. Could she have taken it down to avoid backlash now that she is in a prominent position?

The world is praising the recently elected Vice President of the USA, Kamala Harris. She’s the first woman to have held that political seat, and most importantly, she’s the first woman of color to do so. However, Kamala Harris has already shared her plans to support Israel, is homophobic, and also against trans movements.

Is this a victory we can celebrate full-heartedly? We celebrate her for paving the way for women, but we have to acknowledge that’s where the line is drawn.

LAHORE: 11 November, 2020 – PSDF, the largest skills development fund in Pakistan (funded by FCDO and the Government of Punjab), has partnered with Coursera, one of the world’s leading online learning platforms, to offer globally recognized courses, free of cost for our youth. The partnership was announced during Coursera CEO’s Global Keynote at the Coursera virtual conference.

While online learning is a relatively new phenomenon in Pakistan, amidst the current COVID-19 pandemic, interest and necessity have jointly dictated the shift to online learning particularly for school, colleges and universities. Internet penetration, growing cellular subscribers have facilitated the uptake of online learning, providing access to the world’s best education, and promoting inclusion in learning.

PSDF’s partnership with Coursera taps into this potential, offering a wide variety of courses in market relevant fields, and are particularly geared towards enhancing career advancement, increasing income avenues, and promoting self-employment.

The courses currently offered through PSDF, are 4-months long, and are in the fields of Digital Marketing (for learning SEO, Social Media Marketing and Marketing Analytics), IT (ranging from APP development to coding languages of JAVA & PYTHON), to Finance (Financial Accounting Fundamentals). Through PSDF, these courses will be offered free of cost to the youth that need them the most, with PSDF further incentivizing upskilling with a stipend of PKR 6,000 to be received upon completion of the course.

Every course on Coursera is taught by top instructors from 190 world-class universities and organizations (University of Virginia, UCDavis, Google, IBM etc.) with over 40+ Million learners till date. Learners can take advantage of learning at their own pace through on-demand video lectures, homework exercises, and community discussion forums. After completion of their respective courses, 85% Coursera learners reported gaining more confidence at work, and 87% reported improved team performance.

Speaking on occasion of the launch of the partnership, CEO PSDF, Mr. Jawad Khan expressed the importance of online learning for youth to gain marketable skills for the 21st century: “As we navigate our way out of the global Coronavirus pandemic, digital preparedness and online learning have become the need of the hour. PSDF has once again been ahead of the curve, bringing Coursera to Pakistan, on such a large scale, bringing world class learning opportunities to the homes of millions of Pakistani students and workers. The PSDF and Coursera partnership has thus officially been launched and will be available for free for poor and vulnerable youth in the country. The courses are accessible through learn.psdf.org.pk. Seats are limited, so applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible to kickstart their career, upgrade their skills and discover new income avenues.

Punjab Minister has just announced the Rehmat-ul-Aalmeen Scholarship scholarship worth PKR 500 million for students researching Hazrat Mohammad S.A.W.W. 

Religion has always seen turmoil because of intolerance in humankind; the intolerance of seeing someone else practice a belief that they do not practice. Recently, an incident sparked a similar case turmoil all over the world. French President made remarks about Hazrat Mohammad, Islam’s religious leader. The intolerance against Islam saddened Muslims. And so we are seeing the reactionary actions of them. However, while most of them might not have yielded anything positive, this one reaction needs to be acknowledged.

CM Punjab on Disrespect of Holy Prophet

Punjab’s Chief Minister, Sardar Usman Buzdar, conducted a press conference in Lahore. And there he said that while people may be trying to taint the reputation of the Holy Prophet, he, like most Muslims around the world, will not tolerate it. And that the Prophet’s personality demands utmost reverence and respect.

“Any act of disrespecting Hazrat Muhammad (Salla Allahu Alaihe Wa Aaalihee Washabihee Wasallam) Khatam-un-Nabiyeen, in the garb of freedom of expression, will not be tolerated.”

CM Punjab condemned the making of caricatures of the Holy Prophet and has demanded the UN and OIC take notice of the situation. And ban any act that disrespects any prophet.

To register protest against French who disrespected the Holy Prophet under the shelter of ‘freedom of expression,’ he announced a scholarship. It is named Rehmat-ul-Aalmeen Scholarship, and it will be worth 500 million Pakistani rupees. Of course, the eligible candidate will be from Punjab.

The process will include the establishment of the Rehmat-ul-Alameen (PBUH) Chair in divisional universities. Also, there will be scholarship funds for students in international universities, should they choose to pursue research into the Holy Prophet’s life.

Half of the amount, the PKR 250 million, has been kept for position holders and the rest for all other students. Moreover, the needy matriculate students can apply for the scholarship to continue their studies.

Other elements

He also announced that alongside this scholarship, we need to celebrate a Rehmat-ul-Aalameen week. And in that week, we need to conduct events featuring Naat khawani, speeches on the Holy Prophet’s life, etc. The week needs to be celebrated every year, he said.

The government has also announced another component. There will be a competition of documentaries. Candidates will submit documentaries made on the life of the Holy Prophet. They will get airtime on TV and also on social media platforms. And how they act as a response to the French is that they will be run in English and French subtitles.

The competition winner will get a cash prize and a certificate.

Apple is a company known for hosting memorable events. There was a time when Apple’s events took so much time and consideration; it was almost godly. With audiences now at the edge of their seats, the semi-finals will have 64 teams try to dominate the leaderboard for another four days. Semi-finals will raise the curtains on the prowess of experienced talent while setting the stage for new squads on the verge of national recognition. Teams will fight it out to make it to the top 16 slots. And it all finally comes down to the epic online finals as these 16 teams’ race to the finish line over three action-packed days. With 5 matches scheduled per day, this intense battle royale is where the nation’s new champions will be unveiled.

1. Relax

Given the context, it may seem very weird to be asked to relax. But the more you worry, the more uncomfortable you will be during the test. 4. Look up, take deep breaths, count, and close eyes

Practice deep belly breaths. And when the nasal test is happening, continue deep breaths through your mouth. Count with each breath up to 20 and close eyes if you want to avoid looking at the person in front of you.

Master Tiles received FBR notice for the extravagant wedding celebrations demanding explanations for the explanation of the wedding expenditure

Remember the people who didn’t invite us where they had an unending dessert table? Yes, the Jalal & Sons and Master Tiles Wedding! While we were crying at not having personally witnessed it, it turns out we didn’t just miss out on the food; we also missed out on the 24 Karat gold wrapping of the dessert give away.

Can you believe that? All that gold, just gone!

It’s Viral!

So while we were all googly-eyed for the dessert table, the internet was raging with their photoshoot, which by the way, we were the first ones to cover (You are welcome!). The photos were going viral mostly because we could not relate to the expenditure of the wedding ceremony.

Master Tiles indeed went over the top for Unzila Mehmood, the bride. The extravagant wedding attracted eyeballs not just for the crazy expenditure in this COVID-infested economy but also for the COVID-infested atmosphere where many people were invited.

The Definition of Grand!

Alongside entertainment celebrities, famous political personalities were present as well.

And Maulana Tariq Jameel conducted the nikah ceremony at Blanca Club Lahore. OPM Shoots were in charge of the photography for the event.

That was all Master Tiles, but then the valima had its charm. This event by Jalal & Sons featured Turkish gymnasts!

I am all in for the celebration that you want. If someone wants a simple festival, well and fair. Suppose someone wants a lavish wedding, great. But what is the point of having gymnasts perform at a wedding when you can have a good all fashioned gol gappey wala prepare gol gappey to live?

Jokes aside, people are struggling with basic needs, but that there are ordinary people who have had to change their wedding plans and still lost their money on wedding halls. Due to government-imposed restrictions, banquets could not entertain weddings, and they could not even return everyone’s deposits. So an ordinary Pakistani lost money this way as well. But here, there was no check and balance, and guests enjoyed the gymnastic show.

With the whole country reacting, government bodies got wind of this fiasco as well. And guess what? FBR has served a notice to Master Tiles demanding how exactly they could spend this much on their daughter’s wedding.

GoP Announces Restart Of Loan Application For Kamyab Jawan Program

The loan applications for Kamyab Jawan Program (KJP) are restarting, the Government of Pakistan (GOP) has announced.

The First Round Kamyab Jawan Program

One of PM Imran Khan’s electoral promises included jobs for millions of the youth in Naya Pakistan. The project was named Kamyab Jawan Program. Last time, more than 1 million individuals applied. All those eligible for the Youth Entrepreneurship scheme would generate employment for many more Pakistani jawans. And hence, investing in them would be the best way to ensure the creation of jobs. Therefore, the government intended to disburse PKR 100 billion in the first phase to those entrepreneurs.

KJP restarts

That scheme has restarted. The loan applications for that program have been renewed. Entrepreneurs can once again submit loan applications, and if approved, they will be eligible to attain a loan for their business. The idea behind it is that sometimes entrepreneurs are not able to achieve their full potential or even go towards entrepreneurship because of the lack of financials. To remove that barrier, the program was established.

The eligibility criteria for the program is that an applicant can be either a male or a female within the age bracket of 15 to 29 years. They will have to go to the Kamyab Jawan Program website to find the online form. The applicants can then keep an eye on the bank’s website once they have submitted the form.

Track Record

Since October, the government has already distributed soft loans up to PKR 1.4 billion to entrepreneurs who had applied for the KJP program. It has been a successful program because, ultimately, the idea is that that money would generate employment. And considering COVID has led to many layoffs, the KJP program becomes more valuable.

If we look at the statistics for KJP, the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) for Youth Affairs relayed 30% of the loan recipients were female. And this, while not higher, is still a good number considering women do not get an environment to get into entrepreneurship. Moreover, whatever be the ratio between men and women for loan recipients, the main idea was to generate employment. Whatever gender maybe for the entrepreneur, the employment will be created!

So all a recipient has to do is be qualified, and according to reports, loans of Rs. 100,000 to Rs. 500,000, and Rs. 0.5 million to Rs. 5 million have been provided issued to them.
