LSA Board Of Governors Realign Award Categories

KARACHI: As the LUX Style Awards announced categories last week for the 20th LUX Style Awards, the Board of Governors’ for 2021 met to discuss the way forward (for the 21st Awards) for the country’s most recognised Awards event.

The Board of Governors for Pakistan’s most established Awards show in 2021 includes Aamna Haider Isani (Fashion), Hasan Zaidi (Film), Malahat Awan (Music) and Raheel Rao (Television). They discussed ways to modernise and update the age-old institution by initiating critical changes and realignment in award categories. All changes come into effect from next year (2022) to allow participants to absorb all changes and work towards their respective portfolios.

The category for Best Fashion Photographer will be recategorized to be inclusive of all imagery and will be called Best Visual Artist to recognise fashion videos as well as still photography. The criteria for judging will include Originality of Concept, Creativity in Execution and Technical Expertise of fashion shoots/campaigns.

Says Aamna Isani, “Fashion is a rapidly evolving realm and with the digital revolution upon us, it is unfair to restrict the fashion visual to still photography alone. Covering the many modes of expression, Best Visual Artist will include photographers and videographers who are conceptualising content for print as well as digital mediums.”

The Film category will include an addition of Best Film Score to be a category from the year 2022 for the 21st LUX Style Awards. Hasan Zaidi said, “In every major film award, the overall score of a film (songs + background score) is what is judged since that is what a film jury instinctively feels while assessing a film and because that has a direct impact on the perception of the film as well.

“Moreover a Musical Score is judged not only on its standalone quality as music but also with reference to how that music fits in with the rest of the film. The jury will be looking for appropriate themes, enhancement of scenes and emotions, enhancement of another element to the perception of the film. The criteria for judging would be Musical Quality and Arrangement, Appropriateness/Contribution to Film Narrative, Songs Memorability and Background Score Usage.

“The film music category needs to be taken as a whole and for the award to be designated to the Film’s Music Director/s.”

NCOC Issues Guidelines For The Ongoing Cambridge Exams

Cambridge Exams are already underway for Pakistani students. While Cambridge may have given lax treatment to other countries and opted for no exams in the UK as well, they have not given any such option to Pakistan.

COVID and Cambridge Exams

So in order to ensure that the students don’t lose out on an academic year to COVID, the government is trying to accommodate the exams as best as possible. And all this alongside the pressure from students who did not want to go ahead with the exam in such troubling times. NCOC (National Command and Operations Centre) has thus issued regulations for SOP implementation. They have instructed the concerned parties linked with these examinations to make sure that SOPs for coronavirus is being followed.

Statement by Federal Minister of Education

Shafqat Mehmood, the Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training has wished all the appearing students who have chosen to appear now and not postponed it for the October/November session all the very best of luck. He has acknowledged that these are tough times and difficult decisions were made for the sake of students.

NCOC on the pandemic and exams

Asad Umar and National Coordinator Lieutenant General Hamood-Uz-Zaman Khan co-chaired the NCOC session. In the session, NCOC announced that these exams were being conducted on the orders of the Ministry of Education.

One of the orders by NCOC was that each centre would allow only 50 students. And that no parents to be allowed inside the venue.

Many car brands occupy the roads of Pakistan today. If we look back three decades, we may not have had twice as many brands as we do now. The world is moving at such a brisk pace that no one wants to be left behind. We are all headed towards a clean energy era, filled with electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles. One of the titans, Honda, has also decided to make such a goal as their primary target. Honda intends to move towards full electric and hydrogen soon.

While it may not seem as advanced right now, electric technology has come a long way since Edison. It has actually been discussed by historians that Edison and Ford had plans to move forward with an electric vehicle. However, after the prototype was built, the car was never entered into production.

This is mostly because the vehicle was expensive and inconvenient at the time. Then, after many decades of sitting quietly, the concept rose yet again. Today, electric-powered vehicles are one of the hottest topics and only seem to be going higher from here.

Honda setting sewer aims:

Like a lot of car brands today, Honda has also decided to join in the electric race. While they may not be immersed in it a lot, they have certainly started to shift in that direction. The mere production of hybrid cars shows that people are willing to work towards electricity.

Honda Freed is considered one of the best vehicles to ever hit the road. It is not only fit for the family; the fuel average is enough to take friends along too. So, what is the aim of the company?

According to sources, Honda intends to shift to electric and hydrogen by 2040. This means that they will completely stop the production of petrol and diesel vehicles. Long gone will be the days when cars require exhaust pipes and engine blocks. They intend to shift 40% by 2030, 80% by 2035 and 100% by 2040. This seems like quite a reasonable goal and one that can be pursued.

Moving towards clean energy:

Apart from this, the brand is also aiming to be carbon neutral by 2050. It is barely 2021 and they have already set plans for three decades from now. This shows how much they are progressing in terms of forward-thinking.

However, this means that the company will invest quite a hefty sum in research and development. It seems like a justified investment because there can be no progress without research. Hydrogen fuel cell technology is still relatively new and a lot of it is under testing right now.

While Musk may refer to it as not the right kind of technology, it is certainly proven otherwise. The hydrogen boot is one impressive vehicle. Maybe we see the sale of hydrogen fuel cells sometime in the future. It is no longer impossible to imagine a future where combustion engines are history.

Proton Set To Launch The X50 SUV In Pakistan Soon

Wherever there are humans, development is set to take place. At the end of the day, what counts is the ability for someone to get through the day itself. In Pakistan, we see lots and lots of development being done every day. Whether it is the pop culture department or the technological one, progress does not stop. In terms of automobiles, Proton has decided to launch a new SUV, also coming to Pakistan soon. Yes, we are referring to the new Proton X50 SUV.

It can be quite interesting to note the name of the brand itself. It has this science-like feel to it and it gives off a premium vibe. Driving the X70 can be no small accomplishment as it is one impressive vehicle. It is not only known for its comfortable drive but also the strength beneath the hood.

Despite there being many other brands present, Proton has managed to make a mark quite high in the market. Right now, it seems to be one of the hottest vehicle brands and everyone wants to drive it.

Releasing Proton X50:

While this may sound like a predecessor, it is not one at all. It is definitely newer than the X70 and may even have features that surpass the X70. Firstly, the Proton X50 has a similar feel to it as Honda HR-V and Nissan Juke. It may not be as huge as some SUVs but it can certainly hold its own in battle.

Talking about the engine, the vehicle runs on a 1.5-litre turbocharged one. It has three cylinders alongside a 7-speed DCT transmission. You can forget about driving slow when it comes to this vehicle unless your wish is to drive slowly.

While it is an entry-level crossover SUV, it still has a whole plethora of features and functions. You can never get tired of trying out new things in this vehicle. It has a total of six airbags alongside ABS, Hill hold assist, 360-degree camera. Additionally, there is AEB, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, as well as auto park, assist. You can spend quite a lot of hours just going through the many features of the Proton X50.

New Horizons:

While this may not be the biggest vehicle on the market, it is certainly a good one. It can definitely give its counterparts a run for their money. You may not even be able to feel the road bumps when driving this one. Its price is expected to be around Rs.31 lac, on the base level variant. The highest it is expected to go could be Rs.41 lac and that is still less than a lot of SUVs on the market.

We hope that Proton continues to release such vehicles under its banner. It is a new day in Pakistan for the automotive industry and we feel proud to see the progress. With the stellantis group coming to Pakistan, we may expect newer and newer vehicles touching the streets every day.

Promoting your products on the digital medium has become the need of the time. Pakistani brands are actively using the medium, given its popularity amongst the target market. The caption that accompanies the post, commonly known as ‘copy,’ is full of complicated wording that an ordinary Pakistani would not use in their day-to-day lives.

If you haven’t yet picked up a dictionary, well then, this campaign may have been drafted just for you. Otherwise, people all over social media were in fits of confused laughter.

Netizens react

People had a number of opinions relating to this. While some thought that bots had been employed to come up with the copy, others assumed it to have been plagiarized from novels. Some even joked that they’d need a dictionary before forming an opinion which was a strong opinion itself.

There was another speculation, and looking at the copy, it does make sense. What if it is the same copywriter who came up with them because the style does seem similar.

All that said, if the goal; of the brands was to capture attention, they certainly succeeded at it.

Apple To Face Lawsuit For Marketing iPhone As ‘Waterproof’

Apple claims some of its products to be waterproof which means that were they to interact with water, they would remain operational. But as it turns out when you do bring it in contact with water, it stops working and Apple takes no responsibility for it. This is why the tech giant is facing a lawsuit.

Water-resistant – IP Rating

The higher the IP rating the more water-resistant a product is. And Apple takes pride in claiming its products to have higher IP ratings i.e. more water-resistant. iPhone 8, to be specific, claims to have an IP rating of 67. Hence, with this rating, the company claims that the user can take the iPhone to any water-infested area be it the water tank for the house, or a vacation at the beach. While encouraging users to take the iPhone to these places, if the iPhone was to malfunction due to water, Apple would not entertain it.

How would they know that the malfunction happened because of water? It’s simple. There is an indicator that becomes red on interaction with water. So when the customer takes it to the Apple outlet, they will point blank refuse to take it for warranty coverage after seeing the red indicator because the company does not compensate for water-related problems.

Lawsuit against Apple

An exasperated Antoinette Smith took this issue to court on the basis of Apple overstating iPhone’s water-resisting capabilities. The lawsuit mentions that IP rating is ‘insufficiently qualified by fine print disclaimers.’ This was after an incident with her iPhone 8. Her phone accidentally fell in the water. She took it to the nearby outlet for the company but they refused to accommodate her.

We don’t yet know who will emerge victorious in this lawsuit but it does go beyond logic. If the phone is really water-resistant as they claim, should they not cover the repair cost of it as well. And if they still do not want to cover the warranty for it, then should they not promote the phone to be water-resistant?

With the rise in coronavirus cases all over the country, the situation is turning alarming for Pakistan. To emphasize and make the public follow the COVID-19 protocols, new lockdown measures have been implemented. As hospital wards start to fill up again, it is a grave situation and only a matter of time until we face oxygen shortage, just like in India.

Demand Of Oxygen Supply

With the rise in the number of COVID-19 patients and the need for cylinders. The manufacturers have alarmed the possible shortage of oxygen in the upcoming days. The prices of oxygen cylinders have shot up surprisingly by 2000-4000Rs. However, there is no reduction in the supply of oxygen, say the manufacturers.

Recently, a joined statement has been released by the owners. In the statement, they mentioned that oxygen is produced in its full capacity for now. However, it is only a matter of time before things could turn horrendous, just like in India.

Most of the oxygen produced in the country is being allocated to the hospital settings for now. Federal Minister Asad Umar says that the countries oxygen supply capacity is under stress. The Federal minister took to Twitter to comment about the current situation.

The Current Situation

A spike in coronavirus cases has taken over 2,400 lives just in April. Last week Pakistan reported the highest number of deaths of patients on ventilators during the ongoing month. The situation is reaching critical levels in some cities.

According to a city-wise breakdown, 88% of ventilators in Gujranwala, 85% in Multan, 82% in Lahore, and 65% of ventilators in Mardan are occupied. According to the data by the National Command and Operation Centre on its official web portal, 5,870 new coronavirus cases were recorded last week.

As the situation worsens for Pakistan, it is becoming more important to follow the protocols and limit all the activities as much as possible. As a nation, our fate does not turn out to be like our neighbors.

Indian Man Sells Fake Hand Sanitizers

This man produced hand sanitizers using methanol instead of ethanol just because methanol was easily available and cheaper. Methanol is a dangerous chemical, and yet, the Indian man had already made PKR 200 Million (INR 100 Million) from selling the fake hand sanitizers. The process had been ongoing for the past ten months. The hand sanitizers were produced by AK Industries, Nitin Kotwani, which they would sell under different brand names.

The arrest comes thanks to a tip-off to the Pollution Control Board. The Board conducted a raid and seized 8,025 liters of the hand sanitizer. The sanitizer containers amount up to 14,741 in varying sizes (50 ml, 100 ml, 200 ml, 500 ml, and 5 liters packaging. In total, these goods would have sold for 45.47 lac.

The police are now investigating all the stores, Kotwani was supplying his products to.

When Changan came out with the sedan, a lot of people were doubtful at first. However, eventually, the reviews started to pour in. What might have been expected as a slow rise, turned out to be a swift one to the top. Right now, the brand is among the most popular ones in Pakistan. They have now released details related to an upcoming SUV.

However, the launch date of the SUV is in 2021 so we can only do rough comparisons at the moment. The Changan SUV, in question, goes by the name of UNI-T. Let us dive into the details of its comparison with Kia Sportage!

KIA Sportage:

This is one of the most robust SUVs to exist in the country today. The new and improved version took to higher skies only a few years back. With comfortable seats and a smooth drive, it is definitely a vehicle worth investing in.

When it comes to under the hood, it has a 2.0-litre engine with a total of three variants. All three are automatic and petrol-based, with differences in wheel configuration. While the FWD variant is at a price of Rs.49 Lac, the AWD is at Rs.54 Lac. The vehicle gives an average of 12 to 14 kilometres to the litre. This is quite a good one, considering how much engine power it delivers. It has a 5 person seating capacity alongside a plethora of on-deck features.

Changan Uni-T:

While we may not know a whole lot of details on the vehicle, we do have some of them here. Firstly, the variants being offered in China are set at a 1.5-litre capacity. However, the engine is turbocharged, giving it a cosmic 177 horsepower. This puts the vehicle directly in league with the other SUVs on the road. It is sure to give Kia a hard competition. It has also been quoted that the car will have a more powerful 2.0 litre variant in the future.

The UNI-T comes installed with ABS, Ventilated disc brakes alongside a 7-speed DCT transmission. This seems like quite an impressive portfolio for a newly appearing car. All of this gives the SUV a fuel average of 16 kilometres to the litre! That is a whole lot of average and is sure to give a good run for the money. You can easily go on long road trips and come back on a full fuel tank. The price, converted from Yuan, translates to starting from Rs.28 Lac and going as high as Rs.35 Lac. Seems like quite a bargain in exchange for all that the customer is getting.

1. Easy One Bowl Banana Bread

This easy bread recipe is a perfect hassle-free option when you need a quick healthy dessert fix. Just roll the ingredients in a bowl, mix them up and shove them in the oven. Could it get any simpler than that?

Ingredients

3-4 ripe bananas, mashed
1/3 cup butter, melted
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 egg, beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup chopped walnuts, plus extra for topping if desired

Instruction

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease and flour an 8.5×4.5-inch loaf pan or spray with baking spray.
In a large bowl, combine the mashed bananas with the melted butter, then add the sugar, egg, and vanilla. Stir well with a large wooden spoon.
Sprinkle the baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt over the banana mixture. Stir to combine.
Add flour and walnuts or chocolate chips (if desired), and stir just until no streaks of flour remain. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan.
Bake for 50-60 minutes, until a knife inserted in the center of the loaf, comes out clean. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack and cool completely. Slice into 10 thick slices and serve.

2. Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Banana Bread

If you like your dessert extra sweet, then this combination of peanut butter and chocolate chips in banana bread is for you.

Ingredients

cups all-purpose flour
1 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1½ cup mashed banana about 3-4 bananas
1/2 cup applesauce unsweetened or sweetened
1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
1/4 cup canola OR vegetable oil2 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup miniature semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

Heat oven to 350°. Spray two 8×4-inch loaf pans with cooking spray. You can also use 4-5 miniature loaf pans instead. There is too much batter for just one 9×5-inch loaf pan, so don’t try and do that.
In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and pumpkin pie spice. Stir with a whisk to break up any clumps.
In a separate smaller bowl, combine the mashed bananas, applesauce, peanut butter, oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Use a whisk (I use the same one from before) and mix it.
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and stir together with a rubber spatula or wooden spoon. Stir in the chocolate chips.
Divide the batter between the two pans. Each pan should only be about half full. Sprinkle some additional chocolate chips on top (if wanted).
Bake for 45-50 minutes. Cover loosely with foil (just lay a piece of tin foil over the top of the loaf pans) for the last 15 minutes of cooking, so the bread does not get too brown.
Let the bread cool in the pan for about 15-20 minutes and then take it out and let cool on a cooling rack completely. Or eat a piece warm with butter! Yum!

3. Banana Walnut Bread Recipe

Easy to make delicious, moist, and sweet banana bread is made with simple ingredients.

Ingredients

2 cups flour — all-purpose
2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cinnamon — optional
1/2 cup butter — melted
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup light brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
4 medium ripe bananas — mashed (1 3/4 – 2 cups)
1/2 cup walnuts or pecans

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 F. Sprays a 9×5-inch loaf pan with cooking spray.
In a bowl, combine the dry ingredients – flour, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon.
In a separate bowl, beat together butter and sugar for 3 minutes, until well incorporated.
Add the vanilla and eggs. Beat for 2 more minutes.
Add in the bananas and whisk to combine.
Add the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overtax the batter because the bread will be tough.
Bake for 60-70 minutes until the toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cover with aluminum foil halfway through so the top does not burn.

4. Copycat Starbucks Banana Bread Recipe

Ingredients

2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon salt
1 egg
1⅛ cup sugar
½ cup vegetable or canola oil
2 tablespoons buttermilk or milk
½ teaspoon vanilla
3 bananas mashed very well
½ cup chopped walnuts

Instructions

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
Add flour, baking soda, and salt to a small bowl and set aside.
Mix egg, sugar, and oil and stir until well combined
Add the dry ingredients to the wet and stir well. The mixture will be thick and dry.
Next, add milk, vanilla, and bananas and stir until incorporated.
Mix in walnuts and pour into a loaf pan.
Cook 50-75 minutes, regularly checking until a knife comes out clean.

5. Low-Fat Banana Bread

Ingredients

1 1/4 cups flour
1/4 tsp salt
3/4 tsp baking soda
2 1/2 – 3 ripe bananas, mashed
1/4 cup apple sauce

2 tbs butter, softened
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
2 egg whites
walnuts (optional)

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit
Whisk flour, baking soda, and salt in a small bowl. Set aside.
Blend softened butter and sugar. Add egg whites, mashed bananas, apple sauce, and vanilla extract and beat until thickened and smooth.
Slowly add the flour mixture (I add a small amount at a time). Add walnuts if using.
Pour into a prepared bread pan and bake for about 50 minutes or until a fork comes out of the center clean.

IBA Students Share Spine-Chilling Haunted Campus Stories!

Somehow educational institutes always were called haunted. We would get the explanation: oh, but that’s because they were made on graveyards. Now, graveyard or not, we would be scared like anything, but we also like to hear all those stories and get to the root of whether the ghost is on that ancient-looking tree or that room in the basement. So we decided to approach universities and find out about the most haunted stories.

Today, we will be sharing all the stories that IBA students contributed.

1. The whisperer

So this IBA student mentioned her summer story. She went to the campus located in Sadar. Since it was Summers, the campus was not crowded. So the girl went to the washroom and started washing her hands while reading about a ghost girl at Karachi University. Right then, she started hearing someone whispering. The moment she noticed it, the washroom door swung open and closed with a bang. She ran away with all her might.

2. The Girls Mosque

The placement of the girls’ mosque in the city campus is interesting, at least for students from the other campus. So this student from the main campus shares that once she reached the prayer room after being lost in the maze of corridors. When she reached the prayer room, no one was there. She started praying. And suddenly, from the corner of her eye, she sees a woman praying two rows ahead of her. When her prayer ended, she saw no one. 2 other girls also felt someone was next to them in the prayer area when they were alone.

3. Who is there… or not there?

Another girl shares how she and her friend ran to their class since they were late. They got to the conference room, opened the door, but no one was there. They assumed that they confused the room and ran to the other conference room. But that was empty too. So they decided to go back to the first room. This time everyone was already there; the teacher had taken the attendance and had started the lecture. The girl was confused because they had left the room only 30 seconds ago…

4. Nearly Headless Nick

IBA has its personality, nearly headless nick. So a student shared that when he went to the parking of the main campus, he realized that someone was following him. It was nightfall, and the follower was matching the speed and not overtaking him. So he turned to see that maybe its a friend. But guess who it was. You guessed it right. The student ran to his car and never went to the parking alone again.
