Pakistani companies are being exposed for exploiting people and their skills and talents. A thread broke out on Twitter in which such experiences are being shared. Getting to know about such cases may benefit us by making us warier, but hearing about them is unfortunate nonetheless.

At a time when there are a global recession and a brain-drain in the country, companies’ exploitation is appalling. There will be many who will know that they are being exploited and will turn away; however, some will not. Others might agree to exploitative conditions out of desperation and the need for experience to earn.

Some Shocking Experiences To Learn From

The thread on Twitter is uncomfortable to go through. The embarrassment, humiliation, and feelings of being taken for granted are terrible to sympathize with, let alone empathize. People have been repeatedly called, interviewed, and coerced into joining companies for no good reason.

Working Experiences In Pakistan

In Pakistan, paid internships are still an alien concept even though internationally, they’re being disregarded. Many educated and learned people are exploited in the name of “experience” in unpaid internships. While these interns pick up the load of everyone and positively contribute to the workplace, they have nothing to gain.

Something else to notice is also how they’re thrown under the bus by brands always. If you’ve ever seen a brand be called out for plagiarism, their public statement will blame “the interns.”

For women, the idea of workplaces can be triggering. Workplace harassment is prevalent for several reasons. Firstly because most companies don’t have stringent laws curbing the problem. Secondly, because most workplaces in Pakistan are male-dominated, working in a male-dominated space with men who have patriarchal and misogynistic mindsets is not a small feat. Kudos to all who are making their space one day at a time!

Corporate Exploitation

Corporate exploitation is not new to Pakistan, but it must become a thing of the past if we want qualified people to remain here. Most students looking to choose a University for their degree have a dream of going abroad. Why? Because the job prospects after graduating are insanely amazing.

Moreover, even the internships often during the academic period are excellent. Companies understand that you don’t have experience yet but are willing to learn. They pay you suitably and don’t exploit you. However, that is genuinely not to say that only Pakistani companies exploit. It exists everywhere. The only difference is that some countries have strict laws in place to deal with it.

1. Strawberry Sundae

Ingredients you need:

– Your favorite biscuits
– Strawberry ice cream
– Whipped cream
– Strawberry syrup
– Crushed pistachios (for a pop of color)
– Fresh strawberries (finely diced)

Layer it up!

For the base, add a layer of biscuits, a scoop of strawberry ice cream, drizzle some strawberry syrup, add a dollop of whipped cream, another layer of biscuits, a scoop of ice cream.

2. Nutty Peanut Butter & Chocolate Sundae

Who wouldn’t fancy a nutty, caramel-y, ice cream sundae?

Ingredients you need:

– Chocolate or coffee ice cream
– Brownie chunks
– Chunky peanut butter (yes, chunky)
– Crushed peanuts (you can never have enough of them)
– Chocolate sauce (to drizzle on top)

Layer it up!

For the base, add a layer of brownie chunks, then add ice cream, chunky peanut butter, chocolate sauce, and repeat.

Top it off with a generous drizzle of chocolate sauce and crushed peanuts!

3. Mango Sundae

It’s mango season and there’s no way you can miss out on a mango dessert! Try this mango ice cream sundae!

Ingredients:

– Mango ice cream
– Fresh mangoes (bite-sized chunks)
– Whipped cream
– Canned fruit cocktail
– Mint leaves for garnish

Layer it up!

Add a scoop of mango ice cream, add a spoonful of canned fruit cocktail and mango chunks, add another scoop of ice cream. Top it off with a dollop of whipped cream and a mint leaf.

4. Creamy Banoffee Sundae

Let’s call it a deconstructed banoffe pie? Yum! Try it out!

Ingredients:

– Vanilla ice cream
– Ripe bananas
– Store-bought chocolate chip cookies (crushed)
– Whipped cream
– Chocolate shavings
– Caramel sauce

To make easy caramel sauce, here’s what you need:

– 1 cup packed brown sugar

– 1/2 cup butter

– 1/4 cup milk

– 1tsp vanilla extract

Bring brown sugar, butter, and milk to a gentle boil and cook until it’s thickened. This would take around 1 to 2 minutes. Once thickened, remove from heat,add vanilla extract and give it a good stir. Voila!

But how legit is this? Did they score the same marks by accident, or do they share a telepathy link? These questions are a little hard to answer. But psychologists have observed a mysterious connection between twins.

Another Set of Mysterious Twins?

One psychologist, in trying to find evidence about this mystery, tracked down a set of twins who were separated at birth. People from different cities adopted both. Coincidentally, they got the same names. When they married, their wives had the same first name. And they named their children (again, identical twins) the same. They were surprised by this mystery when the brothers reunited after almost 40 years.

But it’s uncanny. If we are not considering any sci-fi explanations, then it implies that they understand concepts at the same frequency. Or that they doze off in class at the same time. The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has announced to giveaways fully-funded overseas scholarships for MS/MPhil and Ph.D.

Students from all over Pakistan are encouraged to apply, including those from Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

These scholarships are for the session of Spring and Fall 2021. However, the scholarships are being offered to selective students.

MS/MPhil scholarships are being offered in Engineering Technology, while Ph.D. scholarships are limited to specific fields.

If successful, the chosen candidates will get a chance to study in HEC-recognized top-ranked foreign universities for educational purposes. Moreover, to qualify for the Ph.D. scholarships, all candidates must have an MS/MPhil/ME degree or an equivalent (18 years) with a minimum 3 CGPA (first division in case of the annual system).

On the other hand, HEC has shared that all candidates will only be allowed to have just one 2nd division throughout the academic career before their final degree.

If the applied candidates are full-time regular faculty members of public sector universities/colleges and employees of the public sector, R&D organizations registered with the Pakistan Council for Science & Technology (PCST) and are aged 35 or less on or before 12 October can apply for the scholarship program.

It is essential to add here that HEC will reward all candidates who have applied based on merit, based on the HEC Aptitude Test (HAT) organized by the Education Testing Council (ETC) Pakistan that is set to take place on 18 October.

Only candidates that will secure a minimum of 70% of marks in HAT will be considered for the MS/MPhil and Ph.D. scholarships.

The scholarship will cover all their academic tuition fees, other academic fees, round airfare tickets, monthly stipend, accommodation fees, book allowance, and health insurance.

It is also essential to add that all scholarship students are expected to return to Pakistan once their degree/program comes to an end. Those who fail to comply with the terms will be added to the list of defaulters, and their scholarships will be considered as null. Their names will be published on HEC’s website under the defaulter tab.

Previously, HEC shared 132 defaulters from Pakistan who had failed to return after completing their degree. Moreover, a subcommittee of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) was shocked to learn that out of 583 projects, around 106 research projects were still incomplete, at various educational institutes, even after a decade despite funding the Higher Education Commission (HEC).

The committee was also informed that 82 scholars had not returned to Pakistan after completing their PhDs, while 52 had been declared fail by various foreign universities.

The chairman shared that some recoveries had been made and that the cases have been registered in the court accordingly. It was found that only one defaulter had returned the money.

GIK or GIKI University is known for excelling in the discipline of Engineering. If you are hoping to make your mark as an engineer, try out the GIKI admissions process this year, and who knows, maybe you will get into one of the top engineering university.

So let’s get started, shall we?

The admission at GIKI largely depends on the past educational achievements and the admission test. The test is comprised of multiple-choice questions on Physics and Mathematics subjects of intermediate level. Moreover, the candidates are also gauged on their English language skills, considering the education medium of the institute is primarily in English.

This test is held in all the significant cities, namely Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Peshawar, and Quetta. You will get to know about the test venue online when you get your admit-card. Interestingly, the applicants can choose their platform according to what suits them. Successful candidates will be informed online, as well, moreover, if a former GIK applicant whose enrolment was canceled can reappear for the test.

Eligibility

Let’s talk about the eligibility now. For Engineering & Computer Science Programs, the candidates should have one of these:

HSSC (Pre-Engineering, i.e., Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry), 60% or above marks in Mathematics, Physics & Overall.

HSSC (Pre-Medical) with Additional Mathematics, 60% or above marks in Mathematics, Physics & Overall.

A-Levels in three subjects Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry with D or above in Mathematics & Physics. Note that Pakistanis should have 8 O-levels (English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Computer Science, Urdu, Islamic Studies & Pakistan Studies). But if the applicant is applying from abroad, they need 5 O-levels with 60% or above marks as per the IBCC equivalence formula.
If candidates have an American or Canadian High School Diploma or International Baccalaureate Diploma, they need Mathematics (with Calculus) for sure. Also, with Physics and chemistry, they need 60% or above marks, as per IBCC equivalence formula, in Mathematics, Physics & Overall.

So the cycle for admission starts in mid-April each year and ends by mid-August. Potential candidates can find the advertisements in prominent newspapers of the country. The process is entirely online. You can find instructions at http://admissions.giki.edu.pk

So, first of all, you register at the above link as a candidate. Then you fill and submit the online admission form. You will have to pay the registration amount in any HBL branch. You will then get the Prospectus from GIK. Appear at the admission test with your admit card and a paid Bank Challan and SSC or O-Level certificate.

Earlier, we made a PS4 and PS5 comparison. And we decided on that maybe gamers can choose to wait for a little for PS5′ digital version. But today we have another interesting comparison to make; PlayStation 5 and XBOX Series X. So let’s see if gamers should choose Xbox or PS5.

Design

The first angle we will be approaching is Design. For the Xbox series X design, we have a minimalist outlook. Microsoft has presented us with a rectangular ‘tower’ resembling a small desktop PC. On the front, it has an illuminated Xbox logo and a disk slot. As far as the console is concerned, it is not very large, but it might still not fit some entertainment centers. i-VTEC vs. VVT-i Car Engine – What’s The Difference?

Many new drivers are unaware of what they should research before they buy a new car. Some think that the only difference between variants is their features, while others believe its the capacity and fuel-efficiency.

While the above is true, that the variants are distinctive due to their features, fuel capacity, and efficiency, there are also other factors. This includes specifications such as manual transmission, auto transmission, cabin space, ABS, etc.

But, another significant difference, particularly between Honda and Toyota cars, is their engines. Toyota cars come equipped with the VVT-i engine, while the Honda ones are fitted with i-VTEC. Both engines use different technology which differentiates between the two.

Honda i-VTEC vs. Toyota VVT-i

As mentioned above, Toyota uses VVT-i technology, which is also known as Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence. The name in itself is a complete explanation of the technology, timing of the intake valve. For example, if the valve was opened for 5 seconds, it will now open for 10 seconds after the VVTi has been engaged.

What happens here is that the engine generates more power while remaining economical at low RPMs. On the other hand, Honda’s engineers came up with i-VTEC, also known as Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control with intelligence.

Unlike Toyota’s technology, Honda’s engine doesn’t only change the timing of the open valve, it also alters as to how deep the valve will open. For example, if the valve opened about 3mm, it will open at 6mm at higher revs. This technology increases efficiency at low RPMs and givers a lot more power at high RPMs than VVTi.

So, in a nutshell, VVTi technology alters the valve timings, while the i-VTEC alters the timing and depth (or lift) of valves. Also, it is essential to add here that VVTi only works on the intake valve, whereas the i-VTEC makes changes to both the intake and exhaust valves.

In conclusion, the i-VTEC engine by Honda is more potent than rival Toyota’s VVTi when it comes to being ore powerful at high RPMs; it is also close to being economical at low RPMs like the VVTi tech. There is no real winner here as both the technologies are more or less like one another with small to mere differences.

Team Up To Develop Safe User Mechanisms Across Platforms, Proposes TikTok Head

In the wake of the controversial August 31 Facebook Livestream and video clips of 33-year old Ronnie McNutt carrying out self-harm and suicide, Head of TikTok, Vanessa Pappas, has requested the heads of nine social and content platforms to come together and work on devising collaborative mechanisms to improve user safety across user-generated content platforms.

The McNutt video remained on Facebook three hours after his death. Its derivative short video clips continued to go viral on different social media platforms weeks after – even disguised as cute animal videos – as social media platforms tried to keep up with detecting and removing the reshares.

MOU as the Answer

To address any future similar situation, Pappas proposed in her letter sent to her peers at Facebook, Google, Instagram, Pinterest, Reddit, Snapchat, Twitch, Twitter, and YouTube that the respective Trust and Safety teams of the digital platforms should meet and work on developing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) collectively, which clearly defines the types of content that need to be acted upon immediately and will enable the platforms to “quickly notify one another,” and deal with any violent or explicit content shared by users as soon as it is detected on any one of the platforms.

According to the script of the letter, “…it’s clear that early identification allows platforms to respond to suppress highly objectionable, violent material more rapidly.” Also, since regulatory measures differ globally across regions, nations, etc., Pappas acknowledges that it will be essential to involve necessary stakeholders and analyze and discuss how the matter can be dealt with comprehensively worldwide.

Never Have I Ever has gathered quite some attention, mainly due to it being released during the peak of lockdown during COVID. Ok, this is a bit old, but like they say, old is gold. Freaks and Geeks belong to the ’80s. You may say that this show is a bit of an outlier considering it shows today’s parents as teenagers. But see, this is the point. The parents need to watch this to remind themselves of the time they were teenagers too. Remembering what they would do would make them a bit more understanding of their children.
