Twitch Streamers Enraged Over Burger King Recent Marketing Stunt

The platform, Twitch, has an exciting twist. Its content creators are live, and you never know how things are going to proceed. Their audience can donate money to their favorite channel. However, the primary source of income of most Twitch Streamers is sponsorship. And, Burger King, accuse Twitch Streamers, bypassed that by advertising what would generally cost them an arm and a leg, at $5.

On August 18^th, Ogilvy tweeted a video with the caption ‘Burger King turned Twitch’s donation feature into a marketing campaign.’ What happened there was, some Twitch Streamers use the text-to-speech feature to read out messages from fans. Burger King took advantage of that and donated $5 alongside leaving comments about Burger King Products.

To this, Twitch Streamers responded with bafflement, surprise, and anger.

“When it first happened, I thought it was a joke,” said Ross O’Donovan, who runs a Twitch channel, RubberNinja. He has hundreds of thousands of followers.

Ross said:

“We generally follow protocol when it comes to doing advertisements. You have to disclose that it’s an ad to your viewers. “It costs a lot more than $5 for a company to partner with a streamer, so it’s just very scummy to circumvent that whole thing and do it through a donation.
We work hard to try to keep our audiences entertained and to have our streams hijacked like that is just unethical. It’s not fair, and I hope they use this as a study to show marketing students in the future what is OK and what is not OK, because this wasn’t.”

Not just RubberNinja, other streamers were also very upset because usually, the companies have to go through ad agencies. The streamers talk to the agency and then make a deal. Another thing that upset them was that when they do an advertisement, they tell their viewers beforehand. And because of this, they went as far as calling Burger King stunt, guerrilla warfare.

Ben “CohhCarnage,” Cassell said on Twitter, “This is shallow class. Is it taking advantage of a system meant to support these streamers, utilizing it for big-name companies that could easily afford to do it properly and then bragging about it? Predatory marketing. Cool.”

“It happens to me like once a month or so; a company will donate money or gift subs just to advertise,” longtime Twitch partner AnneMunition said on Twitter. “I really despise when companies take advantage of my live content in order to push their ads without clearing it with me first or offering what I should be paid for the marketing, which is more than $5, I’m pretty sure.”

AnneMunition was not featured in Ogilvy/DAVID’s video, but others, like Tyler “TeePee” Polchow, were. After fans recognized him in the ad, Polchow said that it was, indeed, him and that the company never made a direct request for him to participate in an ad campaign.

UET On-Campus Exams: Many Students Test Positive For COVID-19

Social Media has been talking about several things. From PUBG to the rain spells across Pakistan, Coronavirus, and even the University of Engineering and Technology (UET).

But, what has grabbed the attention of Pakistanis is that there have been at least five alleged confirmed coronavirus cases at the Lahore and Narowal campus.

However, the UET administration has denied any claims and has stated that only two boarding students from Lahore had symptoms of COVID-19.

Furthermore, the administration shared that the students were completely isolated at the university’s hostel and will be tested.

As the lockdown in Pakistan eased, with active cases falling shy of 10,000 now, the UET re-opened its campus to students on 17th August reportedly. The students were to give on-campus examinations.

What is even more interesting is that a UET official, who wished to remain anonymous shared that the university VC had received some fake emails in recent days in which some students had demanded online examinations.

The ‘source’ further shared that the media reports of the alleged COVID-19 cases could also be fake as not a single case has been 100% confirmed at the time in either campus. Moreover, they added that SOPs were strictly being followed throughout all branches, and those students who had been coughing during the examinations were immediately isolated.

But, according to several students and some of the UET faculty, they demanded that the university halt examinations on the campus at once ensure everyone’s safety. They had placed forth the argument that if the institute can conduct online classes, then they can also take online examinations, keeping the safety of students and faculty before exams.

COVID-19’s Impact In Pakistan

The novel coronavirus pandemic has impacted Pakistan and the world in several ways. Many businesses have shut down or have wholly gone bankrupt, collapsing economies.

Moreover, all industries have severely been hit by the virus, including the education sector. Students, as well as teachers and institutes, found themselves in a situation where classrooms had to be made digital.

From Montessori to university, classes went online as both ends tried to work their way through the hardships of teaching and learning online. Many institutes opted for Zoom while others opted for Google Classroom and other mediums of schooling.

Last year, the monsoon rains paralyzed the city or so the headlines read; Shopping malls closed, retail and wholesale shops shuttered. But this year is different. The business activity was already, if not halted, slowed. So how will Karachi Rains affect the business this time?

Since COVID-19-induced-lockdown had somewhat eased, the business world was easing towards normalcy. Even though it was not at its full potential but restaurants were opening up for dine-in, and malls were opening for allotted time slots. This normal may look very different from the normal before COVID-19, but it was the new normal.

Let’s look at some of those ways.

1. Power Failure

With even a drizzle, electricity in Karachi disappears like magic, but with the recent Karachi rains bringing heavy showers, power failure continued for as long as 16 hours in some areas. All businesses, even retail shops, need electricity to be able to sell cold beverages. For B2B companies, the power failure hindered contact. Considering work-from-home (WFH) is in effect for most, online zoom meetings would have been affected.

2. Transportation / Supply Hindrance

For businesses such as wholesale and retail that were already suffering from supply shortages due to COVID, lockdown could not access their supplies. Transporters could not take the products from warehouses through streets filled with water that came up to the waist.

3. Halting Operation at Manufacturing Companies

With machinery that needs electricity to run, most manufacturing companies come to a standstill due to Karachi Rains. Even if the workers are all present, there is almost no production. So while products are not being delivered to retails shops, they are not being produced either.

4. Storage Affected

Since in most areas of Karachi, the rain fills up the roads and the houses, and the cars float away, warehouses get affected too. These storage places, the warehouses located in these areas, fill up with water, and destroy the stored goods.

5. Mobility

And even if a business is not affected by all that, it suffers from the lack of mobility. If customers cannot reach the retail store or the mall still open, there will be no sales. Also, those businesses that deliver their products will have trouble moving from one location to another as well, considering they will have to find routes unaffected by rain, which is next to impossible in Karachi.

Rains that should be a blessing start choking businesses. For a city that is already being choked, wouldn’t this be more dangerous?

The new iPhone 12 is going to offer stylish modern design, 5.4-inch and 6.7-inch display sizes, amazing camera tech, performance upgrade, 5G, and competitive pricing. But how to get that competitive pricing? Well, Apple has decided to compromise on the battery.

Apple insider Ming-Chi Kuo revealed that Apple would not opt for a massive price increase, and this might hurt iPhone rivals. They are doing this by downgrading battery technologies. Understand it in this way; the upgrade edition is said to increase the iPhone cost by almost $200 to 300$. However, by slashing the battery cost up to 50%, Apple can reduce the price.

iPhone 13 battery further compromised?

The brand is also planning to further work on this idea, and so the later editions can witness up to 30% to 40% total cost. But how good is that for the user, that remains to be seen. Considering that after two years, the iPhone battery usually gives up, we will have to wait for iPhone 13 for that. It is quite possible that the technology iPhone plans to use for the battery is calm and does not compromise on the user experience.

Now, this move by Apple may win new fans and iPhone users for the sake of affordability and the brand name attached to it. However, the brand may lose its age-old users who have stuck with it for quite some time, upgrading their phones with each new release. The Sehat Sahulat Programme launched in KPK by the Prime Minister is a significant step forward. In terms of being a welfare state, Pakistan has a long way to go, and health insurance always seemed like a perfect fantasy.

However, as the details of the program are shared, we’re more than happy to report, this is the new reality for the residents of KPK!

On his official Twitter account, KP Minister Taimur Khan Jhagra’s tweets showed that he was elated. To him, this was Imran Khan and KP Chief Minister Mahmood Khan’s second gift. Only last week, the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) Peshawar was inaugurated.

He also recognized the roles played by former chief minister Pervez Khattak and former health minister Shahram Khan Tarakai in starting the program.

What Does It Cover?

The program has been divided into three categories that operate in the form of tiers. Firstly, there is the necessary treatment; then, there is an advanced treatment section, and lastly, additional coverage.

1. Basic Treatment

Primary treatment covers medical facilities that cost approximately Rs. 200,000. These include emergency operations, admission, maternity services, including standard deliveries and C-section, fractures, and injuries. Families also get Rs—1,000 maternity allowance.

In addition to that, general surgery, including gallbladder, biopsy, colon, prostate, hernia, is insured. General medicine, including diabetes, hypertension, and cardiac-related issues, are also covered under the same plan. For many residents of KPK, it can take years until families can save up Rs. 200,000. Thus, this is an incredible initiative.

2. Advanced Treatment

The ‘Advanced Treatment’ plan will cover medical expenditures worth up to Rs. 400,000. These will be covered for the facilities related to cardiovascular, including angioplasty and bypass. Artificial limbs (Prosthesis), kidney diseases (Dialysis), breast cancer screening, and management of neurosurgical diseases are included too. Moreover, the facility of transportation compensation worth Rs. Two thousand will also be given to the cardholders.

Under the advanced treatment, life-threatening diseases can be treated for many, which previously was not possible.

3. Additional Coverage

Beyond these two tiers, there is also an additional coverage category that covers other treatments and diseases. The range for these treatments also lies within the ballpark of Rs. 400,000. This will include cancer treatment (Chemo, Radio, Surgery), kidney transplant, accident, and emergency and intensive care unit (ICU) care.

All in all, this is a significant step forward for Pakistan. Hopefully, the facilities’ quality will not nosedive now. A country can indeed get nowhere if its people aren’t happy and healthy!

Kobe Bryant would have turned 42 on August 23, 2020. Nike pays tribute on this occasion to the athlete through a compelling short film.

Lamar Narrates Nike Film

The brand released the film yesterday. Kendrick Lamar, the American rapper, songwriter, and record producer, is the narrator. In the video that compiles clips of Kobe and his daughters amongst other athletes, Lamar gives words to Mamba personality. The phrase stands for being better. Lamar Narrates:

“Kobe taught us to be better. Better dreamer. Better waker. Better stretcher. Better walker. Better talker. Better walking the walk and talking the talk.”

We can hear Kobe’s voice in the video as well. The voiceover says: “I don’t care who you are, where you’re from, doesn’t matter. You wake up every single day to get better today than you were yesterday. That’s always the most important thing.”

The video ends with a caption on the screen, ‘Mamba forever’, illustrating that we need to embrace the Mambe personality at all times to strive to be better versions of ourselves.

Remembering Kobe

Earlier this year, on January 26, Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna passed away along with seven others in a helicopter crash. PUBG Pakistan: Another Teenager Commits Suicide Over The Game!

Players Unknown’s Battlegrounds, popularly known as PUBG, is a viral shooter game. PUBG is not just famous in Pakistan but has several global players.

However, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that it is one of the most controversial apps or games in history. There have been several reports of children and young adults dying because they were obsessed with the competition.

Reportedly, the game once again has become the reason for yet another loss of life. Police reported that a 16-year-old from Lahore belonging to the Ichhra neighborhood committed suicide. The reason was that his parents had refused to permit him to play the addictive game.

His brother Shoaib reportedly told the investigators that Shehryar was an addict of the online game.

Earlier in June, two young boys belonging from Punjab had also committed suicide. A 20-year-old took his own life in the Saddar Bazaar area, whereas a 16-year-old claimed his own life in Gulshan-e-Abbas Phase 2 neighborhood.

PUBG Ban In Pakistan

The series of problems associated with PUBG led to its temporary ban in Pakistan by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) in June. The complaint registered against it claimed that the addictive game was a significant waste of time and had a very negative impact on the minds of young children.

A teenage boy in Karachi has developed some serious mental health issues after playing PlayerUnknowns Battleground (PUBG) excessively. The coronavirus pandemic became a primary reason why young teens and adults were trapped at home with very little to do, eventually becoming hooked onto gameplays.

There had been several complaints registered against the game as well from individuals all over the country who supported the ban. However, PTA and PUBG were consistently in talks to improve the scenario. When the PUBG reps met with PTA, the telecom authority decided to lift the ban.

“Keeping in view the positive engagement and response of the company, the PTA has decided to unban PUBG,” the official statement had said.

Social media had become furious when PUBG had been banned for a limited time. #UnbanPUBG and other related hashtags started to trend on Twitter, and other social media platforms on top as many fans of the game spoke out.

According to these fans, video games are healthy for individuals in many ways, and the game has no such adverse effect. The individuals also claimed that banning games like PUBG does more harm than good. It kills the potential for young gamers to emerge victoriously and shoots their shot into going into esports.

Well-known global esports winner Arsalan Ash also gave his two cents on the matter. According to the Tekken champion:

“The current situation, during crisis…there is so much unemployment, and during the lockdown, people are still earning through esports. Some companies are making pathways for players, making a source of earning for them, and the PUBG ban is totally unacceptable because many players are earning through the game.”

We have now yet to see if the authorities will take another step against PUBG.

LUMS Students Angry At The Admin For Not Reopening The University

LUMS has never got as much bad publicity as it is getting at the moment. Various hashtags are trending in association with the university, while students have conducted a peaceful protest as well. So what is the #ReopenLums hashtag about?

The LUMS Way

While government authorities have said that all educational institutes, even Universities, will be opening for in-person classes by September 15th, LUMS has taken a different route. The administration of the prestigious university has decided to keep the university closed indefinitely.

Some sources have divulged that the administration even went as far as to say that LUMS will most probably not open until a vaccine has been introduced.

Is that wise to do? There are several vaccines in their clinical trial stages currently. That means that they will require at least 2-3 months before they can officially be termed as the right vaccine for the virus. Moreover, how long will it take for the vaccine to reach Pakistan and who will all be able to afford to access the vaccine?

These questions are unanswered and not considered by the admin when they decide to relax in their homes overseas.

Why Do Students Want To Open The Campus?

Students want to open the campus for several reasons. It’s not as if they wish to their campus opened because they’re so unhappy being protected from the virus that they want to be exposed to it.

One of the reasons why is because many, many students hail from toxic households. Said students’ households are unsafe for them, mentally distressing, and not conducive to learning.

A hybrid model of opening LUMS – where those who want to come on campus urgently can – will benefit these students. Moreover, several students come from remote areas for whom online classes are unsuitable for their surroundings.

The Hole That Burns In The Pocket

LUMS has also exponentially increased its fee. It has recently changed its new fee structure because of which students, on average, pay 4.5 lakhs per semester. Now the students are reasonably demanding that since the campus is closed, the fee should be reduced. Why? Because half of the campus expenses are not applicable currently, and the others are not available to the students.

However, you know the drill. LUMS has refused to do something about that. Thus, this is also why the students are saying that if you don’t want to reduce the fees, then call us back on the campus.

Are Students Entitled To Their Opinion?

When you’re paying 4.5 lakhs per semester, can you be entitled to your opinion? The administration of LUMS has been treating its students in the worst way possible. Only 1% of emails sent to the Office of Student Affairs were responded to while instructors still cut marks for having a bad internet connection. It may be a prestigious university, but when it comes down to their ethics, everything seems questionable.
