A lot of people had issues with the kind of digital content that was being created on the app. Youngsters and adult-like were creating content that was considered indecent and against the values of the country or culture. TikTok On The Verge Of A Ban

TikTok got banned in India for grave reasons. The country deemed the app to be a threat to national security. India banned the app after its skirmishes with China in the Galway Valley. They alleged that the app stole data from users illegally upon the download of the app.

Around that time, Pakistan had banned PUBG over concerns of the deteriorating mental health of its youth. Following that, people started protesting digitally for a ban of TikTok, and the government issued a warning for the ban of TikTok.

Islamabad: Pakistan’s economy has been under the spotlight due to myriad reasons. Ever since the government led by Imran Khan took charge, a lot of changes were made at critical positions. One such individual to join in the vital area as the Governor of State Bank of Pakistan was Mr. Reza Baqir.

His time has been a challenging one. He inherited plenty of problems—however, none graver than the COVID-19 pandemic. In a recent interview with Marco Hive, the IMF veteran spoke about how Pakistan needs to move forward, the state of the economy, and much more.

According to Mr. Baqir, there were multiple issues, including an overvalued exchange rate, a historically low savings rate, and a State Bank with insufficient reserve holdings and twin deficits. To face this challenge, leadership at the top had to recognize the magnitude of the issue. With the blessing of Prime Minister Imran Khan, a reform package supported by the IMF came about.

State Bank Raises Hope Of Economic Revival

One of the key objectives was to move from a fixed exchange rate to a market-based approach. Due to a fixed exchange rate, Pakistan has had issues in meeting foreign exchange obligations. The government is working on a model to ensure the country doesn’t face this issue again.

This was a tricky phase as the rupee was depreciating. The governor used the phrase “swimming against the tide.” Hence, the Central Bank’s management worked hard to push forward a unified message. While the rupee value depreciated, the Bank communicated with corporate banks and supported them through this period. Nonetheless, the governor assured that the State Bank would still be able to play a role if there are any disorderly market movements in terms of exchange rates.

Given that a policy decision was made to move towards a market-based exchange rate, the apparent challenge was inflation expectations. According to Mr. Baqir, the range of market predictions was somewhere the State Bank had expected. This was possible because of the detailed discussions held with the leading market analyst. The wider business community got clarity regarding the Central Bank’s policy decision.

The biggest concern of them all has been how Pakistan will recover from COVID Crisis on a financial level. Again, the decisions made during a problematic reform have helped the country’s economy, showing in the improving macroeconomic indicators. However, being an EM country, with high public debt and low foreign reserves, things could turn quickly.

To combat the COVID crisis, changes have been made to the Monetary Policy. Interest rates have been dropped by 625bps, which is significant. A one-year extension in principle payments of borrowers to the bank was introduced. The period in which the bank’s clients could restructure loans had been doubled to 180 days. Another step was to add concessional credit facilities for payroll financing, targeting job savings, etc.

With these steps, the economy has shown some positive signs, which has led Mr. Baqir to say that the worst in terms of financial turmoil is behind us. If the current improvement in the health crisis continues, it will also positively reflect our economic situation in the short to medium term.

However, to sustain this improvement in the long term, a few things need to happen as per the Governor’s advice. We need to increase our exports. Moreover, credit should be redistributed from large players to SMEs, women, and underprivileged sectors. Plus, a culture of saving has to be promoted.

Given the pressure on the government and the prediction of doom, the Governor’s interview gives us cautious optimism. Time will tell if these measures have a long term and lasting impact. For now, we have some hope

Bilawal Inaugurates And Makes Promises

PPP’s chairman, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, inaugurated the place on Saturday.  He believes that the people of Karachi will benefit from the People’s Square because of the underground marking that eases the traffic. Moreover, the masterpieces of architecture created within the square are a sight for sore eyes!

He added that under the Neighbourhood Improvement Project, with the assistance of the World Bank, all districts in Karachi will get a People’s Square. Not just that, they will be restored and beautified further. 

As a result of the 18th amendment, provinces are given financial autonomy. That, according to Bilawal, acts in Sindh’s favor. He remarked that Sindh has fought with its fair share of terrorists, and now it’s time to move onto greater things.

More Projects Underway

Bilawal said similar projects were also under construction in Malir and other districts of Karachi. A project would be launched at the Wazir Mansion in Kharadar, where Quaid-e Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah was born. He appreciated the Sindh government’s plans to put sewerage and other utility services networks underground throughout Karachi to protect the historic sites and the people. 

He said,” We believe that if Karachi develops, then not only Sindh province but the whole of Pakistan will grow, but there are problems and difficulties.”

COVID-19 and social distancing have everything messed up, and we don’t know what will become of this tradition. 1. Ishqiya (ARY Digital)

One of the top singers, Asim Azhar, sang ‘Ishq Kiya’ in his soulful voice with Kaiynat John. The song was the OST for ARY drama Ishqiya. Interestingly, alongside singing, Asim Azhar wrote and also composed it.

2. Malaal e Yaar (Hum TV)

Malaal e Yaar aired on Hum TV in the second half of 2019. Ahmed Jahanzaib and Nish Asher sang the OST for the drama. The story of the show was about a love story of a feudal lord with his wife, whom he forcefully marries to follow tradition. And its song entrances the audience and convinces them to watch the entire FIFTY-FOUR episode drama series.

3. Alif (Geo TV)

The blockbuster drama Alif that sparks a spiritual journey in the viewer had an even more amazing of an OST. Shuja Haider wrote and composed the song. Haider alongside Momina Mustehsan sang the OST for the drama aired on Geo TV.

4. Ehd e Wafa (Hum TV)

Having followed and loved Sunehrey Din and Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, the bias for Ehd e Wafa was strong. The show was about military training and sacrifice, reviving the memories of the old PTV Days of the two army dramas. But this one had his own strong identity as well. Moreover, the song lyrics too sparked the patriotism within us. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan sang the ISPR official song.

5. Ghisi Piti Mohabbat (ARY Digital)

Three singers join forces and sing the OST for a drama revolving around dark comedy. We know that the song adds the flavor to a show, so if a song does not match it, the scene loses its touch as well. The Soch Band so entirely composes this OST. The lyrics bring humor for the audience in the right sense instead of employing cheap comic tactics. And even the singers Saniya, Muqaddas, and Shehnaz, are seen to be enjoying the song. What can be better than that?

The now late student, Nadia Ashraf, leaves a million questions and realizations in her wake.

What Led To A Promising Student’s Suicide?

Nadia Ashraf was a Ph.D. student. She was studying at Karachi University, in the Dr. Panjuani Center for Molecular Medicine and Research. Her supervisor, Dr. Iqbal Chaudhry, allegedly was harassing her, which ultimately led to her decision to take her own life.

Ashraf had been trying to complete her Ph.D. for the last 15 years. Her area of research was cancer, and she was a promising student, yet her supervisor was acting as a massive obstacle in her life and career. 

To her close friends and family, she remarked several times that Dr. Chaudhry will not let her complete her Ph.D. or that she’s unaware of what he wants from her.

More details from a media outlet report that Dr. Chaudhry is an illegal director of the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences, Karachi University. Additionally, he had appointed another faculty member to bully Ashraf.

Sources report that when Ashraf applied for research elsewhere so that she may attain her Ph.D., Chaudhry also tried to get her terminated from there. After that, she asked again in the same department at Karachi University.

Harassment In Educational Institutes

Harassment in educational institutes is being exposed to be as common as anything. Faculty members, administration members, and male students all feel entitled to make a woman uncomfortable. They don’t feel remorse for making people’s lives hell and putting them in unimaginable distress. 

Ashraf was an only child, living with her mother alone. Can we even imagine what was being done with her? How helpless must she have felt that death seemed like the only viable escape?
