Mahira Khan Cheered Her BFF in Her Latest Instagram Post!

Here’s Why Everyone Should be a Feminist in Pakistan!

feminism
Credits: Talkspace

Recently, I came across intriguing research claiming that power, control over their own self and other resources (financial, food, status, recognition), tends to make a person less attentive towards other’s emotions.

This leads to people using more stereotypes and increases the objectification of others.

The simple ability to influence someone else while staying uninfluenced by them makes a person more likely to engage in socially unacceptable behavior. Adam. D. Galinsky through experiments proved that power reduces our capacity to take the perspective of others.

The results from the experiment suggested that power decreases one’s ability to experience empathy and I believe there could be no better explanation for the high number of cases of violence against women.

It is important to state here that the link between power and negative behaviors is by no means an automatic one. Power triggers inappropriate behaviors among those who already have a tendency to behave in a certain way.

Simply put, not every man is going to abuse the power our patriarchal culture bestows upon the male in our society but the thought does little to comfort when you think of all the men, with possible criminal tendencies and serious personality disorders that enjoy complete supremacy over the females in their families; their cruelty continuously fueled by the fact that no one can question their authority.

The uncontrolled and unchecked patriarchy prevailing in our society allows them to make major life decisions for their wives, daughters, and sisters, without any consideration of their consent.

They can marry off their adolescent daughters to 40-year-old drug addicts, kill their sisters for rejecting a marriage proposal, beat their wives black and blue in fits of outrage or throw acid on the face of a lover they consider promiscuous all in the name of male honor and ‘vani’.

Vani is a custom followed in rural areas Pakistan i.e interior Sindh and Afganistan where girls (minors) are married off or given as servitude in agreement to another family. This is usually done to settle financial or personal disputes.

“I could do whatever I wanted with her” don’t these words sound a bit too familiar?

These were the words of 21-year-old Bashir Ahmed when he was inquired about Gulzaraan, the 6-year-old bride he had attained through ‘vani’ 2 years ago, who was admitted at district Sukkur hospital for sustaining internal injuries.

After establishing that he was the rightful owner of Gulzaraan since they were married, Bashir Ahmed added that he had divorced Gulzaraan and sold her to another man, Rasul Baksh, for Rs. 87,000. According to police officials, Rasul Baksh had intercourse with the now 8-year-old Gulzaraan and she was severely injured as a result.

This is not an isolated case. Incidents like these are quite common in Pakistan, young girls are traded like stocks to compensate for crimes that men of the family have committed.

Our society has reduced women to the status of a mere commodity by shackling them to traditions and depriving them of basic social justice. They are harassed, battered, raped, subjected to both physical and emotional abuse in their own homes.

They are burnt alive or killed in the name of honor by their own family. People committing such atrocities are always unrepentant, just like Bashir Ahmed and Rasul Baksh.

After all, they are only exercising the power this society has granted them. The idea of having irrefutable rights on their wives, daughters, and sisters was instilled into their minds by this very society so why should they expect any confrontation from it now.

On the contrary, they only expect facilitation and understanding from a society that is reluctant to condemn an acid attack on a woman whose character it deems less than crystal clear as if it somehow justifies the atrocity.

A society that after all this progress cannot proclaim that women have just as many rights as men; the right to respect and basic civility, the right to choose the state of their life, to express themselves, to choose a life partner, or to choose a career.

It is one thing for men to consider female subjugation their birthright, but what is even more despairing is that the women in our society have also internalized this belief and consider themselves inferior to men in every aspect. They believe the dehumanizing behavior they are subjected to in their day-to-day life to be a part of our culture, tradition, and religion.

According to a survey conducted by the Punjab Commission on the status of women (PCSW), half of the victims of domestic violence in Pakistan avoid reporting domestic abuse in fear of bringing dishonor to the family. They fail to be reported because they are not recognized as serious transgressions, not by men or even women themselves.

Let’s suppose if a woman does stand up against the injustice and inequality, the misogynistic society that more than often shares the mentality of the offender is always there to put her back in her place and our flawed justice system. Already too weak to discourage the preparator, she is rendered useless by this patriarchal mindset of the society.

Sadly, we can make place for ‘vani’ and ‘karo-kari’ in our customers but not for empowered women, better equipped to fight these horrors.

I fail to comprehend what it is about a strong woman that scares us so much that we can tolerate women being traded like sheep and cows but recoil in horror at the word feminism.

“There is no place for feminism in Islam.” A statement more than often uttered confidently by men with Islamic knowledge limited to hijab and man’s rights over their women.

It has become a popular belief among people in Pakistan that gender equality cannot be achieved within the context of Islam and also the most used argument to vilify feminism, for once secular feminists, tend to share the opinion and believe term “Islamic feminism” to be paradoxical.

I beg to differ, I believe it is the misogynistic mindset and oppression of women that Islam doesn’t have tolerance for, as women we are often told that Islam has given women more rights than any other religion yet continue to be subjected to grossly unequal treatment.

No one can deny the great difference in the rhetoric, how women are held in high stature in Islam and the bitter reality we see all around us where women are forced to lead the lives of second-grade citizens in their own country. There could nothing be farther away from Islam than this ill-treatment of women at the hands of the very men Islam has declared as their maintainers.

If there is something that Islam has no place for, it’s not feminism but ‘vani’, ‘karo-kari’, harassment, acid attacks and the overall social injustice that women face in Pakistan.

Feminism is the need of Pakistan. The only solution to correct the imbalanced power dynamics between the two genders that stimulate violence against women. In the current situation if we want to bring about any change to the condition of women in our country, first and foremost we need to change our mindset, which is the biggest facilitator of oppression of women.

To reshape this society and make it a safer place for women, we need to identify and establish women’s rights and diminish the inequality between genders, which gives men an unfair advantage over women. by providing women with the same access to health, education and financial independence as men.

Men and women are not the same but they are equal in rights and dignity nevertheless and it is very possible to achieve absolute gender equality in Pakistan that accounts for the gender difference, keeping with Islam. Only by getting rid of the taboo that surrounds the word feminism in our society we can convince women to stand up for their rights and to do that we all need to call ourselves feminists.

Understand that feminist are not loud angry females that hate men and want to put them down, feminism does not mean being anti-male or anti-Islamic, nor does it call for immoral and anti-religious practices, it is a movement to fight for the equality of rights between men and women, nothing more and nothing less.

Men or women, everyone should be against the oppression of women, even if it somehow does not affect them, especially if it does not affect them. Simply because it is only the decent thing to do.

So be a feminist!

To create a change in Pakistan, we all need to be feminists, and proud, to let every predator of women know that we do not share their mindset and will no longer let our silence facilitate them in their crimes.

Confidently declare yourself a feminist and let women know that the society is ready for them to speak up against the horrors of ‘vani’, child marriage, rape, sexual harassment, ‘karo-kari’ and domestic violence. it will not use cultural and religious blackmailing to silence them, this time it will stand with them.

Chinese RMB May Replace US Dollar for Selective CPEC Projects

RMB

The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) has become a symbol of peace and friendship for both neighboring countries.

The project has come a long way from its announcement. One of the most recent and major developments in regards to it is that both countries have mutually decided to use Renminbi (RMB) for future energy projects.

The Renminbi is the official currency of the People’s Republic of China, and one of the world’s major reserve currencies

A meeting was held on Monday of the Joint Working Group—JWG of CPEC which the Minister of National Development and Reform Commission—NRDC of China and the Federal Minister for Planning Development attended.

However, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of Pakistan’s Cabinet needs to give this approval for this decision before it can be implemented. An official summary would be presented in the next meeting.

Lahore Teens File Petition Over Deadly Smog & Hazardous Air Quality High Court

Lahore Teens File Petition Over Deadly Smog & Hazardous Air Quality in High Court

lahore air quality

Two school-going children in Lahore have filed a petition in the Lahore High Court against the dangerous smog that has built up in the city since October.

Mishael Hyat, 17, Leila Alam, 13, and Laiba Siddiqi, 18 have filed the petition to get Chief Justice Mamoon Rashid Sheikh’s attention in regards to the deteriorating air quality in the city and its surrounding areas.

The teens have accused the government of Punjab of violating their right to life and health by underreporting the severity of Lahore’s polluted air.

The petition states that “Smog Policy and Action Plan arbitrarily underreports the severity of ambient air pollution thereby exposing the general public to unacceptable and unsafe levels of air pollution and is therefore violative of the Fundamental Right to a clean and healthy environment.”

The children’s lawyer Rafay Alam added:

According to USEPA Air Quality Index (AQI) the air should be on 50 (Good) whereas it is on 144 (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups). Lahore’s air quality was 182.

Just last week, the air quality of the city crossed 400, crossing all safe limits to set an all-time record.

Children start to get ill as soon as the winter begins, -Rafay Alam

Alam told the court that seniors and children are vulnerable to the smog outside. Not just that, it can lead to serious health issues including a rise in asthma and other related cases.

Earlier, Amnesty International had also pointed out at the Pakistan Government’s failure to protect the citizens from the increasing bad-air quality as Lahore had reached 484.

The threshold for ‘hazardous’ level of air quality is 300 where people are advised to ‘avoid all physical activity outdoors -Amnesty International

Alam shared that air-quality worsens when smog seasons ponders in (Oct-Jan), due to Pakistan’s general industrial, agricultural, and transportation practices. The government needs to do something to provide relief to citizens, he added.

The petition calls out several government agencies in charge of monitoring air quality, including the Punjab Environmental Protection Council, Punjab Safe Cities Authority, Environment Protection Department of Punjab, and Pakistan Environment Protection Agency.

The LHC has directed the Punjab government to submit its reply in the next hearing.

Govt of Pakistan Issues Official Tsunami Awareness Message to Pakistanis

Pakistan”s coastal areas, particularly the Makran Subduction Zone (MSZ), had major tsunami threats that under went a destructive tsunamigenic earthquake in 1945.

Over 4,000 casualties were caused because of it, and a major chunk of the damage was owed to the lack of casualty awareness in the country.

When two huge tectonic plates collide, the pressure and friction is great enough that the material in the Earth”s mantle can melt, and both earthquakes and volcanoes can result”, he told.

According to Zahid Rafi, Director National Seismic Monitoring Centre, Subduction zones are places of high activity.

The UN General Assembly designated 5 November as World Tsunami Awareness Day four years ago, in December 2015.

Zahid Rafi said it is pertinent to inform that National Seismic Monitoring and Tsunami Early Warning Centre set up by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) in Karachi with the assistance of UNESCO was running round the clock and efficiently performing Seismic monitoring.

Considering the vulnerability of country’s coastal areas of Sindh and Balochistan including Karachi city of 20 million people, PMD conducts awareness sessions and drills to educate people about the developing stages of Tsunami flood and safety measures.

The Government of Pakistan’s official Twitter account made a post today about the same:

Popular Comedian Takes a Hilarious Dig at Meray Paas Tum Ho! [Watch Video]

faiza saleem meray paas tum ho

Starring the popular and legendary Humayun Saeed, Adnan Siddiqui and Ayeza Khan, Meray Paas Tum Ho by ARY Digital has been making waves on the internet for a number of reasons.

The drama’s story revolves mainly around the theme of cheating in a marriage, so needless to say, it has created quite a conversation around the subject.

While most of the stories we see on the theme of cheating show men as cheaters, this story throws light on the aspect of women cheating on their husbands, which automatically makes it all the more sensational and controversial.

Samina Peerzada’s Stance on A Scene from Meray Pass Tum Ho Goes Viral!

So much so that Ayeza Khan herself gave a warning before the last episode went on air:

The drama is written by Khalil ur Rehman Qamar, who was also recently interviewed and caught himself in the eye of a social media storm for his misogynistic point of views.

Do Takay ki Aurat, a phrase from the dialogues of Meray Paas Tum Ho, is also getting widely popular.

So popular that Faiza Saleem, renowned comedian and artist decided to make a hilarious video on it.

Take a look at the video here:

Addressing the subject with a satirical, feministic lens, she talks about the way women are treated- rather mistreated- in the society and how the cheating of a married man will always be justified but when a woman does the same thing, she becomes Do takay ki Aurat (cheap, worthless).

McDonald’s Fires CEO Over Secret Relationship with Employee

McDonalds

McDonald’s has fired President and CEO Steve Easterbrook. The reason behind this decision is that Easterbrook was found having a secret relationship with an employee.

Having a relationship with an employee is against the company’s policy. He “has separated from the company” after the board determined that he “violated company policy and demonstrated poor judgment involving a recent consensual relationship with an employee,” McDonald’s said in a statement.

Furthermore, Easterbrook has now been replaced by McDonald’s U.S. president Chris Kempczinski. In an email sent to McDonald’s employees, he acknowledged his affair and that it violated company policy.

He added that “this was a mistake. Given the values of the Company, I agree with the Board that it is time for me to move on. Beyond this, I hope you can respect my desire to maintain my privacy.”

Easterbrook had taken the position of CEO in March 2015 after serving as the chief brand officer.

One the other hand, Kempczinski, in an email, has shared “I’m thrilled to be leading this incredible company. Working alongside our talented team, our board, our franchisees, and suppliers, I am committed to upholding our rich heritage of serving our customers and driving value for our shareholders and other stakeholders.”

Facebook’s New Corporate Identity Brings its Family of Apps Together

Facebook

Tech-titan Facebook has unveiled its new logo. The corporate identity has been designed to represent the company as the parent of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and more.

Although the label reads facebook, the color coordination, and bland, generic look hint something else.

Reportedly, the logo is supposed to be put to use in the “coming weeks” within Facebook products and marketing materials.

We had heard earlier that Facebook would soon do something like this and add their logo to their products to show ownership.

Jianguo Pro 3: Price, Specification, Features & More

According to the company, the new corporate identity uses custom typography and is “designed for clarity,” with the goal of creating a “visual distinction between the company and app.”

Facebook says the goal of including “from Facebook” is to let people know that its apps have “shared infrastructure” and rely on many of the same teams. “People should know which companies make the products they use,” writes Antonio Lucio, Facebook’s chief marketing officer.

Furthermore, Lucio added that the company even considered renaming the parent company, however, the idea was dropped.

There’s still a question in the pipeline whether changing the logo will help the company come out of the dark times they have had to face especially after the Cambridge Analytica scandal and everything else that followed.

I want to tell you all this story.. story of a girl I met years and years ago. Story of someone who has the biggest heart in the world. I remember meeting Naroo in college thanks to @sanahafeezsheikh 😘🙏🏼 Blaring desi music and some algebra books in her car. That was it. She was there for me when no one was around. She put up with my loser behaviour. She listened patiently while I told her all my dreams. She used to wake up in cold sweats when her father passed away while we were in college, she would cry.. but she never let her mother see it. She protected her sisters fiercely. And at the age of 23 she took over a then small company of her fathers. She worked day and night, surrounded by only men ( at that point). And all the while still making us all feel that she’s there for us. And day before, when I watched her on stage making her dream come true, it felt like life had come a full circle. She is the only female CEO in the automotive industry in Pakistan. She told all of us that once at a conference they were welcomed as – Good evening Lady and Gentlemen. Aaaah! I truly believe success comes from hard work and good intentions. But dreams.. dreams come true because some kindness somewhere has just worked, someone’s prayers for you have been accepted. And imagine someone who is always kind to people, that’s my naroo.. ♥️ Naroo, the day Penny kicked us out of our apartment and you took me and Hissaan in, I prayed for you so hard. I believe my prayers have something to do with you being on that stage, as does anyone who has known you because that’s ALOT of prayers. I love you and have always been proud of you. To you my Naroo, to you forever inshAllah 💋

The whole post was about praising Narissa Dharani and the success she has endured while working super hard from a really young age. And now Naroo, as Mahira likes to call her, is the only female CEO in automotive industry of Pakistan!

“And day before, when I watched her on stage making her dream come true, it felt like life had come a full circle. She is the only female CEO in the automotive industry in Pakistan. She told all of us that once at a conference they were welcomed as – Good evening Lady and Gentlemen. Aaaah!”

These are the pure words one could write for a friend and we just love how expressive Mahira is!

We really wish we had a BFF/cheerleader like Mahira. It’s very rare to see such strong friendships that keep growing strong in this industry. We really hope both Mahira and Naroo stays in each other’s life forever and stay as strong as they are now.

Do you guys have any such friends that you will move the mountains for? Share some of your fun moments with us in the comments below.

Students in Pakistan Finally Allowed to Form Student Unions After a 35 Year Ban

Pakistani students have spent 35 years without being able to exercise the basic right of forming student unions in all educational institutions in the country.

This deprivation was a result to General Zia ul Haq’s attempt in 1984 to curb increasing clashes between ideologically different student groups.

The ban, however, failed to serve the purpose and instead stifled the intellectual growth and social development of students.

Student unions are important as they give students a platform that allows them to practice skills of diplomacy, debate, politics and leadership.

Without regulated student unions, students tend to find refuge in various groups based on religious, ethnic and geographic associations. The purpose, of course, is protection of rights of affiliated students. But it becomes problematic because the groups work for the benefit of the parts, not whole of the student body.

Thankfully, after almost 35 years, the Sindh Assembly decided yesterday (November 4th, 2019) to lift the ban on student unions from Sindh. The resolution, moved by Pakistan Peoples Party MPA Nida Khuhro and supported by all opposition parties in the assembly, demanded the revival of student unions as well as the maintenance of a healthy environment within the educational institutions of the province.

While reading out the resolution, here’s what Nida Khuhro said:

“It is of utmost importance for the youth of Sindh to actively and meaningfully participate in the democratic, social, cultural and political processes of their country and of the province,”

Shopkeepers in Japan to Start Charging Customers for Plastic Bags!

japan plastic bags

Japanese retailers including supermarkets and convenience stores will be required to charge for plastic bags by next summer ahead of the Tokyo Olympics, a government panel agreed Friday the 1st of November.

The new move brings Japan in line with many other countries that have already adopted the environmentally friendly measure, but it will only come into effect in July 2020.

It seems that the Say No to Plastic revolution has truly begun! Even in Pakistan it was officially announced that no stores would sell their goods in plastic bags after October, 2019.

Moreover, there won’t be a set price for a bag, with every retailer able to decide how much to charge.

The government will try to “ingrain the habit among consumers of bringing bags” and aid them in understanding the move as “a step towards transforming their lifestyle”, according to the plan.

It comes after the major economies of the G20 agreed on a deal at a meeting in Japan’s host nation in June to reduce marine plastic waste.

However, a lot of Campaigners have critiqued the East Asian country for taking this action very slowly and reducing plastic consumption – chiefly as it produces more plastic packaging waste per capita than any nation apart from the United States, according to the UN.

Japan is venturing an enviable waste management program, and 86 percent of its plastic waste is recycled by the state.

Nevertheless, much of that “recycling” includes merely incinerating plastic, also producing energy –  a method that produces carbon dioxide and contributes to climate change.

Japan is shipping about 10% of its plastic waste for reuse overseas. Nevertheless, environmentalist research shows that if poorly burned, the waste can end up in the ocean or release toxic pollutants.

Furthermore, In 2018, the government of Japan launched a plan to tackle plastic waste, with the goal of eliminating by a quarter by 2030 the country’s 9.4 million tons generated each year.
