Al-Haj Awarded Greenfield Status to Manufacture Proton Cars in Pakistan

Proton Saga 1.3L

The Ministry of industries and Production gave Greenfield status to Al-Haj automotive for manufacturing and selling Protons cars in Pakistan.

Proton Holdings is a Malaysian automotive company that started off by producing Mitsubishi Motors products in 1980. They produced an indigenously designed vehicle with Mitsubishi’s engine in the year 2000. They may have taken a serious inspiration from the legends, Lamborghini.

The speculations were in the air for long but nothing concrete came forward about this collaboration. However, after the Greenfield status, the things are in “black and white” now.

The production will officially start in 2020 as Proton is currently working on establishing its production plant in Karachi.

This will be the company’s first CKD plant in the region, covering almost 55-acre of land. The initial investment will be around $30 million. Talk about a “ray of light” in the dark times for Pakistan’s economy.

As per the sources, this manufacturing plant will be producing 25,000 units per year. Not just that, it will also fill a bit of void in the employment crisis by offering 2000 direct employment. The opportunities are unlimited for local vendors also, as we can expect 20,000 indirect employments.

The 1.3 litre Saga Sedan will be the first locally produced car. We are hopeful that it’s first of many to come by the collaboration of Al-Haj and Proton. This manufacturing plant will be a gateway for more foreign investment in Pakistan.

Dell Technologies Acknowledges Potential in Pakistan’s Tech Sector

Dell Technologies

Pakistan as an economy is suffering nowadays due to the recent depreciation in the currency.

This led to a significant negative impact on the overall economy, especially imported goods.

While most tech brands would prefer pulling out, Dell technologies, one of the most sought after tech companies in Pakistan, still see market potential for IT products.

Since December 2017, Prices of Dell Technologies’ products had a significant increase of about 40%.

Despite this, Anothai Wettayakron, South Asia Consumer Business Vice President at Dell Technologies remains positive about Dell’s future in Pakistani Market.

According to Dell Technologies, with the launch of 5G, Pakistan’s IT sector has the potential to grow as it can give rise to new business models and perhaps, in turn, make the economy better in relation to the IT industry.

Adding further, he mentioned that most countries have faced crunches and economic hurdles like the one faced by Pakistan and he was hopeful that Pakistan would survive it and its economy would grow in the future.

Talking about 5G, he said, “We believe it will deliver massive transformational changes across all businesses and society.” He’s of the opinion that 5G is more than just a telecom service for Dell Technologies.

Dell is sure that with the introduction of 5G, new business models would be introduced and billions of devices would be generating and consuming data like never before.

Talking about foreign investments in relation to the IT sector in Pakistan, and its security and political environment, he mentioned that Dell already had a huge presence in Pakistan and would potentially be good to work with in order to provide better services than before.

We hope that as mentioned by Dell and its vice president, this new fifth-generation technology brings a positive change in the Pakistani economy and Pakistan sees positive growth in regards to IT in the future.

More Than 50% of Global Advertising Expenditure to be Spent on Internet Advertising in 2021

More Than 50% of Global Advertising Expenditure to be Spent on Internet Advertising in 2021

Advertising is not just informing people or consumers about the product or a service, it’s also a way of influencing some of the major buyer decisions regarding available products and services.

In order to create an impact on the minds of consumers, these products/services need to be advertised.

And the most commonly used media for advertising purposes were print media, television, radio, and billboards.

However, recently this trend is changing due to the advent of social media, and the above mentioned mediums aren’t as popular as they once were.

David Ogilvy once said, “If you’re trying to persuade people to do something, or buy something, it seems to me you should use their language, the language they use every day, the language in which they think. We try to write in the vernacular.”

According to Zenith Advertising Expenditure Forecasts report, advertisers are keen on spending more on social media than on other media platforms, especially press or display advertising.

The report forecasts that, by the end of 2019, press is set to fall 6% to $69bn in terms of Ad spend, while an increase of 20% to $84bn is expected on social media.

It is also reported that there is a 4.4% growth possibility in global adspend making it $640bn however marking a fall on its previous estimate of about 0.2%.

It was also reported that the US ad market is the strongest market in the world so far followed by North America by a growth of 5.5%.

Due to this forecast agencies are less likely to gain profits or advantages, however since North America’s small and medium-sized companies rely on social media especially Google and Facebook to advertise, they might have an advantage over the rest.

It was further reported that social media with a 13% share of global adspend comes behind Television and paid search, both of which are at 29% and 17% respectively.

The growth in social media is expected to slow down especially for the next 3 years, however it will still do well if not to great.

It is expected to drop to 17% in 2020 and 13% in 2021 respectively, however by then it would account for total global adspend of about 16%.

Zenith global brand president commented,

“Social media advertising gives brands the opportunity to drive growth by using automated tools to optimise their campaigns for key business objectives.”

Which is true, considering paid search advertising is expected to exceed $100bn for the first time ever.

Zenith’s forecast, published in June, found that more than half of global advertising expenditure which is around 52% would be spent on Internet advertising for the first time in 2021.

#Lahore is Now the World’s Second Most Air Polluted City!

air pollution

A considerable part of the world seems to have become increasingly aware and concerned abut climate.

Although climate change affects every region differently as the pollution levels also differ, there is possibly no region that remains completely unaffected by climate change.

The air, the water, the soil, every element is suffering, and we’re responsible for it.

According to World Air Quality Report (2018), air pollution will take an estimated seven million lives globally in the next year, while costing the world’s economy nearly 225 billion USD.

Executive Director of Greenpeace South East Asia, Yeb Sano, commented on the report:

“Air pollution steals our livelihoods and our futures, but we can change that. In addition to human lives lost, there’s an estimated global cost of 225 billion dollars in lost labor and trillions in medical costs. this has enormous impacts, on our health and on our wallets. We want this report to make people think about the air we breathe, because when we understand the impacts of air quality on our lives, we will act to protect what’s most important.”

Frank Hammes, IQAir CEO, said:

“The 2018 World Air Quality Report is based on the review, compilation, and validation of data from tens of thousands of air quality monitoring stations around the world. Now everyone with a cellphone has free access to this data via the AirVisual platform.

This has also created a demand for air quality monitoring in cities or regions where no public data is available. Communities and organizations from California to Kabul are supplementing governmental monitoring efforts with their own low-cost air quality monitoring networks, and are giving everyone access to more hyper-local information.”

Findings from the report include that out of 20 most polluted cities in the world, 18 are in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

In Pakistan, Lahore seems to be in the worst condition as it is now the world’s second most air polluted city.

Moreover, air pollution in India has worsened after Diwali, especially in Delhi.

Coca-Cola Pulls Out of CokeFest Amid Economic Slowdown

CocaCola CokeFest

Coca-Cola Export Corporation (Pakistan) has pulled the plug as the titled sponsor for CokeFest.

The reason behind the brand’s withdrawal is the economic slowdown in the country and change in management.

The annual food festival that was held by ActiveMedia and backed by Coca-Cola started back in 2016.

ActiveMedia has confirmed that Coca-Cola is no longer the title sponsor, however, the event will go on under a different title called ‘Soul Food Festival’.

The festival is still very much alive. Coca-Cola has pulled out from the event for their own reasons, but all the other sponsors are still on board -Saad M Khan, the CEO of Active Media told Profit.

According to Profit, the reason Coca-Cola stepped back was that the new management was questioning the return on investment the brand was making to sponsor the festival.

An official has shared that the current recession in the economy has also strained profit for the brand in Pakistan, sales have also fallen.

There were also security concerns. The event is not owned by Coca-Cola, and we make no profits from it, but it has our name plastered all over it. If anything goes wrong, it is our head on the chopping block -An Official told Profit

Coca-Cola, on the other hand, has not made an official announcement or has said anything in regards to this news. The brand has stated that they will release an official statement if need be.

Furthermore, Profit reports that there were some discrepancies between the brand and ActiveMedia in accordance with the operations of the festival.

Coca-Cola’s communication boss, Fahad Qadir, said:

After many successful editions, The Coca-Cola Export Corporation, Pakistan Branch, has decided to not sponsor FoodFest for 2019-20, in line with our evolving business strategy. All of our focus is currently on Coke Studio.

However, there are all kinds of possibilities to enter into the food side. And while we have pulled out of CokeFest thanks to the recent recession, we are constantly working on new ideas on how to expand.

We have now to see what Coca-Cola decides. What do you think of this sudden decision?

Last year, it was also claimed in some media reports that Unilever Group plans to invest the US $120m in Pakistan over the next two years. So there may be some truth behind this speculation that is going viral nowadays.

However, all claims and speculations have been denied by Shan Foods. Shan Foods has put forward a holding statement on all of their social media pages along with their website claiming that these speculations are nothing but a rumor.

Although Shan Foods in its holding statement has denied such rumors, it was also stated that “IF and WHEN” something like this were to happen in the future, then the food giants would be the first to announce it to all their stakeholders.

Adding further, the statement also said that Shan Foods has established itself as “a powerful global brand” and it would continue to explore itself in order to strengthen its business outlooks.

So even though this recent claim has been denied, there could be a possibility of it being somewhat true.
