Pakistani E-Commerce Websites Discontinue iPhone & Google Pixel!
The Government of Pakistan recently imposed Customs Duty on imported Smartphones. Importing mobile phones or asking for relatives to fly them over has now become expensive.
There are, however, several conditions to make the policy easy on overseas Pakistanis who are flying in for short visits. According to the policy, each individual (Pakistani or overseas Pakistani) can carry up to 5 handsets per year.
Out of the 5, one will be free, whereas taxes and duties will be applicable on the rest. Furthermore, those handsets which have not been paid for will be blocked within 30 days. Those who have foreign SIMs with roaming on will also get cleared from paying these taxes.
This is applicable on handsets flowing into Pakistan after 1st December.
Mobile Tax & Duties Breakdown
Imported phones will have the following taxes and duties applicable to them:
- Customs Duty
- Regulatory Duty
- Sales Tax
- Additional Sales Tax
- IT Duty
- Mobile Levy
- Provincial Tax
Customs Duty
The fixed amount for Customs Duty is PKR 250.
Regulatory Duty
Mobile phones worth in-between $1-60 will be taxed with Rs.250. Handsets worth in between $61-130 will be taxed with 10% of the value. Whereas phone worth over $130 will be taxed with 20% of their value under Regulatory Duty.
Value of Phone (USD) | Taxation |
$1-60 | Rs. 250 |
$61-130 | 10% of the value |
$130+ | 20% of the value |
Sales Tax
Sales tax is fixed at Rs. 1500 per handset.
Additional Sales Tax
Additional sales tax is fixed at 3% of the phone’s actual value.
IT Tax
The fixed amount for IT Tax is 9% of the phone’s value.
Mobile Levy
Value of Phone (PKR) | Levy |
Rs 10,000 to 40,000 | Rs 1000 |
Rs 40,000 to 80,000 | Rs 3000 |
Over Rs 80,000 | Rs 5000 |
Example
- Value of a phone declared by Customs is Value A
- Add 1% Insurance on Value A, this would become Value B
- Add 1% Landing charges on Value B, this would become Value C
- Now, this Value C is important because Customs will now Apply/calculate all Duty/Taxes on Value C, not Value A.
If Value A = $100, then its Value B will be $101. Its Value C would then be $102.01 (and not $100).
Now that the value of the phone has been determined- it will be converted from USD to PKR at Inter-Bank rates for that particular day.
Now that we have the phone’s value, the following formulas will be applied for taxes and duties:
- Value C + 10% or 20% Regulatory Duty = Value D
- Value D + Rs 250 fix Customs Duty = Value E
- Value E + 3% Additional Sales Tax = Value F
- Value F + Rs 1500 fix Sales Tax = Value G
- Value G + 9% or 6% Income Tax = Value H
- Value H + Rs 1000 or greater as Mobile Handset Levy = Value I
- Value I + Rs 1000 fix Sindh Stamp Duty = Value J
- Value C + 1.16% CESS Duty = Value K
Value J + Value K – Value C = ___ PKR. This is the final amount which is the total of Duty/Taxes that an individual will have to pay.
Taxation Per Phone
The following chart explains how much taxation will have to be paid according to the value of the handset.
Value of Mobile | Taxation (PKR) |
$50 | Rs 4,641 |
$100 | Rs 6,367 |
$150 | Rs 8,083 |
$200 | Rs 13,116 |
$250 | Rs 15,666 |
$300 | Rs 20,216 |
$350 | Rs 22,767 |
$400 | Rs 25,317 |
$450 | Rs 27,867 |
$500 | Rs 30,417 |
$550 | Rs 34,967 |
$600 | Rs 37,517 |
$650 | Rs 40,067 |
$700 | Rs 42,618 |
$800 | Rs 47,718 |
$900 | Rs 52,818 |
$1000 | Rs 57,918 |
$1200 | Rs 68,119 |
$1400 | Rs 78,319 |
$1500 | Rs 83,420 |

Sonu Nigam Expresses His Wish to be a Pakistani [Watch Video]
Sonu Nigam is considered amongst the top singers in India. Boasting a stellar career over two decades in Bollywood, he has proved his mettle time and again with various chartbusters.
However, over the past years, there has been a dent in his career with Sonu bagging less work in Indian movies.
Apparently, the singer believed that the demand of Pakistani artists in India is increasing and Indian talents is getting fewer tunes in Bollywood soundtracks.
During an interview, Sonu Nigam took a sly dig at Pakistani singers, claiming how they are taking away offers from Indian artists.
“Sometimes, I feel like it would be better if I was from Pakistan. At least I would get offers from India.”
He also expressed his disapproval over how Indian singers have to pay music companies to sing in shows.
“They don’t do the same with Pakistani singers. But then why single only Indian singers out?
He added that he is good friends with Atif Aslam and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. But they are not demanded to pay and sing at musical evenings.
Atif Aslam is Like my Younger brother. He is never asked to pay to sing at shows, neither is Rahat Fateh Ali Khan”
Evidently, the B-town singer is pretty unhappy with the practices in his nation’s music industry and laws that restrict Indian artists to exhibit their talent.

Ilaj Sahulat Plan: KP Government’s New Health Insurance Program
The KP government has introduced yet another health insurance program called ‘Ilaj Sahulat Plan’. During their last tenure of PTI’s government, the party introduced the province-wide ‘Sehat Insaf Programme’.
Reportedly, the plan is in its beta phase (pilot project), if it proves to be successful then it will be carried across throughout the province. The KP government is launching the project in association with the National Rural Support Programme (NRSP) and State Life insurance company.
Adviser to K-P Chief Minister on Education Ziaullah Bangash shared that the government has issued the ‘Sehat Insaf Cards’ to residents in different parts of the province.
In a few weeks, the government will be handing the Ilaj Sahulat Plan card to 800,000 needy people. -Ziaullah Bangash
The Sehat Insaf Card programme will remain intact and the launch of the Ilaj Shaulat Plan will not interfere with the health program. Citizens in 4 districts-Kohat, Malakand, Mardan, and Chitral will be able to make most of the best health care services.
He furthermore added that families will only have to pay PKR 2,550 a year and in return will get services worth of PKR 30,000 at hospitals throughout KP and will be able to avail ambulance services only for RS. 1,000.
Initially, the PTI-led KP government launched their flagship Sehat Insaf Cards program back in August 2016. The program had been formed to cover 1.8mn families in the province while only costing the government Rs. 5.2bn over a 2-year span. The cards are accepted in 102 designated healthcare facilities including both private and public hospitals.

HEC Bans 3 Medical Universities From Giving Admissions
The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has banned three medical universities from admissions in the postgraduate medical and dental programs.
According to Dawn, the educational institutes have been barred from admitting students for a period of one-year i.e, until Nov 2019.
Following are the three medical universities that have been barred from admissions:
- Faisalabad Medical University (FMU)
- Nishtar Medical University (NMU), Multan
- Rawalpindi Medical University (RMU)
These institutes were established by the Punjab government in 2017 by upgrading various colleges.
Apparently, HEC’s action is a result of the provincial government’s inability to make these institutes fully functional as per HEC’s rule and regulations. The three medical varsities did not have any constituent medical colleges, which is a compulsory rule to get recognition.
A detailed report by the Higher Education Commission stated:
“The requirement of having a constituent medical & dental college as a recognition requirement of the PMDC Ordinance 1962 (Amendment Act 2012 XIX) shall be ensured and the notification of the constituent college shall be issued by the government of the Punjab”
Consequently, the three universities have been given a deadline of Nov 2019 to get recognition status from the Pakistan Medical & Dental Council (PMDC).
HEC’s report further adds:
“Since MBBS is a professional discipline, hence, as per practice, the HEC will only verify degrees of those graduates who have been registered with the PMDC as registered medical practitioners”
What’s more, HEC has also declared it compulsory for the varsities to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) prior their launch from for postgraduate programmes the Quality Assurance Division.

Waseem Badami’s Second Marriage on the Cards?

And now the news of Pakistani news anchor and broadcast journalist, Waseem Badami tying the knot for the second time has taken social media by storm.
Here’s what happened!
Apparently, Mubasher Lucman invited Aamir Liaquat on his show ‘Khara Sach’ on Samaa TV. The host congratulated the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insfaaf politician on his second marriage and even included the ARY anchor, Waseem Badami in his talk show over a call.
During the candid conversation between the trio, Lucman asked Badami about his second marriage plans.
The question was posed as a joke by the Khara Sach host and Waseem shied away from commenting on the matter. However, Aamir Liaquat dropped some major hints about Badami’s second marriage.
The ARY host, Waseem Badami couldn’t stop blushing as he stated:

Patari Releases “Bohot Ho Chuki Nafraten” in Remembrance of the APS Tragedy
Patari, Pakistan’s premier music streaming platform, has released a song with
an accompanying animated video called “Bohot Ho Chuki Nafrate’n”, in memory and
remembrance of the APS attack victims on the 16th of December, 2014.
This was a terrible day in our history, a day on which hundreds of futures were wiped out in an act of senseless brutality, a day on which happiness was snatched away from hundreds of households and a day which four years later still burns with a searing pain in the collective memory of our nation.
It is then on days like this when it’s important to remember that the only answer to hate and violence is love and peace. That only a message of peace can douse the raging flames of extremism and hatred. It is this message that the song encapsulates.
This song is a composition by Ali Aftab Saeed, with production from Saad Sultan and lyrics by Mukhtar Javed with vocals done by Ali Aftab Saeed as well. The video was produced by Patari.
Ali Aftab Saeed, the Composer, and vocalist said:
“I know many people believe that corruption is the biggest menace we face at the moment but I think religious extremism and terrorism outweighs it and everything else and we need to address it more even though it’s not a safe thing to do. I’d like to Thank Zeeshan Noel for introducing me to this poetry and Mukhtar Javed for writing this heartfelt poetry.”
Patari’s Co-Founder, Humayun Haroon, talking about the collaboration between Patari and Ali Aftab added:
“When we first heard this song and the message behind it, we were deeply moved. We immediately felt it was important that these impactful lyrics and vocals needed to have a visual depiction to properly convey its meaning and message. We had Patari’s in-house animator, Hamza Salar do the artwork and animation for the video and I think he did a wonderful job capturing the essence of the song. The video captures the bleakness of the tragedy while also managing to convey hope in an evocative way. We hope that on this terrible day, as we remember the countless precious lives lost, we also remind ourselves that only a message of peace and unity can conquer the crusade of hatred”
The Video has been released on Patari’s official YouTube Channel

The audio can be streamed and downloaded from Patari’s website and apps

‘Powderplay’ Anyone?
It all began when Olpers came out with a TVC attacking Nestle Nido and projecting it as if it had been caught in a lie!
Oh yes, it did!.. or have they really?
If that wasn’t enough, a “Public service message” which was more like a tantrum suddenly started filling up our streams/newsfeed.
Amazed by their “directness” of the content, we sat back and waited to see what comes next!
As expected NIDO did clap back but in a way, we did not totally expect!
The response was well how should I put it… addressing the point directly? Hard hitting? YES. CAN WE SAY IT WAS “CLASSY”? Probably yes.
Not only did the brand thank its competitors, but it also offered to invite people to come to visit their factory and get their facts right.
Following this very public and brutally humble takedown, the loyal NIDO babas and mamas seem to have taken to Twitter to support their “favorite” brand.
Looks like a solidarity movement beginning with #MorethanMilk
Here is how it went down, grab them popcorns:
When you believe in your brand and the trust of your consumers than nothing can stop you! Let’s go NIDO! #MoreThanMilk

As kids start eating solids, there comes a gap where not all necessary nutrients are not present in the food. Nido bridges the gap and provides minerals and nutrients necessary for the growth of a child. #MoreThanMilk

This is what good marketing looks like. Brands need to learn to promote themselves without attacking others #MorethanMilk

But still, to clear the doubts NIDO invites all of you to their factory to witness the manufactured products with your own eyes #MoreThanMilk
— Rayy. (@RabyaMemon) December 12, 2018
You really have to be missing a few brain cells to think you could take on a 100+ year old corporate giant with nothing but petty theatricality. Well played, Nestle #MoreThanMilk

A lil brand war and here is a Thankyou note to them from Nido pic.twitter.com/4r108c0zod— Junaid Iqbal (@junaidsayss) December 12, 2018
This is savage. Thankyou NIDO for a lesson in how to deal with haters in the future 😉 #MoreThanMilk pic.twitter.com/ZKC39SaelB
