Pinky Memsaab Review: How The Movie Could Have Been A Contender

Pinky Memsaab Review

Pinky Memsaab is one of those films where the cast performed better than the expectations, while it was the promising plot that failed to do justice with the trailer.

The coming-of-age story of a maid from Pakistan to the United Arab Emirates could have gone anywhere but not where it eventually did because had it gone the Cake or The Motorcycle Girl way, Oscars might have been their next destination.

Hajra Yamin talks to Brandsynario

But now, even the first week seems far. How the film could have done better and what could have made it a contender, let’s find out:

The film’s camera work was the biggest no-no!

Three years back when Yasir Jaswal’s Jalebi was released, it garnered mixed reviews. Some liked it, some didn’t but everyone was in love with Mo Azmi’s camerawork that more or less ‘English’. Be it the car chase or the indoor sequences, never before did Islamabad look this menacing and beautiful at the same time.

Sadly, Pinky Memsaab suffered from a shaky camera work that could have been avoided to make it more presentable. There was no need for so many indoor shots when the film was about Jumeirah or Dubai; handheld camera in certain sequences would have done well but not in the whole film and had the director realized that it might have saved the film.

It could have been all about women!

In a film about Pinky (Hajra Yamin) and Memsaab (Kiran Malik), it was the husband (Adnan Jaffar) who had the complete story; how he ditched Tennis to become an investment banker, how he chose to work day and night to make his family comfortable, how he loved his wife who didn’t love him back because he didn’t understand his writing (in a diary), it was coming-of-age for the male character in the lead.

When he played Tennis in front of his son, when he hugged him to bed that night and when his wife finally answered his phone, that was the moment you felt that you had accomplished something. Hajra Yamin and Kiran Malik’s stories were well-conceived but not well-executed which was surprising considering the film’s writer and director Shazia Ali Khan was a woman herself.

MY character reveal in film #pinkymemsaab. COMING SOON

A post shared by Adnan Jaffar (@adnan.jaffar) on

A good editor always makes a difference!

One of the many reasons why Cake looked so well connected was because of the editor Aarti Bajaj who had edited countless films for her now ex-husband Anurag Kashyap. She knew what to keep and what not to keep and that’s why Cake came out as an international level flick; Pinky Memsaab could have gone the same route but they didn’t, ending up with a two-hour ride in a car that was going nowhere.

A good editor can save a bad film but a bad editor can make a good film look mediocre, and that’s what happened with Pinky Memsaab.

No depth for female characters!

Hajra Khan may not be the best actress in Pakistan but she has a presence on digital media especially through the Teeli video she did a few days back. However, she was wasted in the role of Kulsoom Api, a woman who went to UAE after getting married and ended up as a prostitute (or something like that).

That character had so much potential but the director didn’t go that way and was stuck in her own arc where Meher-left-Hasan-thinking-he-was-in-love-with-Pinky-when-he-wasn’t! Their kid who had the minimum presence in the film had more depth than these females which is one of the reasons it feels like a TV drama, not as a feature film.

When you aim for Eliza Doolittle but do too little!

Kiran Malik’s Meher is a failed mother, wife, writer and a housewife; Hajra Yamin’s Pinky is a naïve village girl sent to UAE so that she can help her Mistress; the two end up helping each other as Memsaab train Pinky to wear Western Clothes, speak English, behave like a maid and above all, look presentable, something that reminded me of Eliza Doolittle from Pygmalion where Professor Higgins turned a Cockney girl flower into a what you call a Memsaab.

All was going well until one night the Mistress loses it and throws Pinky out of the house, after which the film lost its way.

Meher’s father enters the scene who had remarried after her mother’s death; her stepmother was a sweet lady who adopted the daughter of their Christian maid reminding Meher of how badly she treated Pinky. Confused? Yes, that’s confusing!

Good acting is the only highlight of the film!

The film will always be remembered for Hajra Yamin’s stellar performance as a maid who grooms into something better but that seems her own doing since she hails from the theatre.

Sunny Hinduja makes his presence felt as the driver Santosh and his entries were the only moments where you felt like smiling during the entire film.

Although Adnan Jaffar had done this kind of roles before this was his most proper film role and he excelled in it; his wife Kiran Malik was breathtakingly beautiful and with a little bit of experience, she might develop into the perfect film heroine who can raise the bar high by looking sexy and classy at the same time.

Pakistani E-Commerce Websites Discontinue iPhone & Google Pixel!

Customs Duty

The Government of Pakistan recently imposed Customs Duty on imported Smartphones.

It is likely that this has discouraged the sales of imported sets, including iPhone and Google Pixel in the local market.

Several e-commerce platforms have removes the phones from their catalog as well. These sites include Telemart, and even iShopping.

If a user searches the website using the keyword ‘iPhone’ or ‘Pixel’ they are automatically redirected to a webpage reading ‘There are no products matching the selection’.

System for Blocking Unverified Phones to go Online Soon!

If an individual tries to use a direct link to the page on Telemart, they are also redirected to a new webpage which reads that the product is out of stock, or once again results as the item which is being searched for does not exist.

Though it is not confirmed, the reason behind the sudden vanishing of these phones seems to be the news Customs Duty law. According to it, individuals will have to pay a tax amount on the phone i.e if the phone is priced at Rs 24,000 then an additional Rs 10,000 as a tax.

Customs Duty

This casts an uncertainty over the price at which these online shopping stores can provide apple devices, or other imported devices for that matter, to their customers.

The government imposed this duty as an effort to cut down the number of illegal devices which are smuggled within the country and sold in the black markets. Another step taken is the introduction of the DIRBS (Device Identification Registration Blocking System) program.

PTA DIRBS Can Block Stolen or Smuggled Mobile Phones!

On the other, HomeShopping has shared that due to the introduction DIRBS and lack of an official channel for importing iPhones in Pakistan, selling these phones at the previously offered price to customers has become quite difficult. This has forced such e-commerce sites to stop selling these devices on their online stores.

It is still unclear if we will see the sales of iPhone or Pixel or probably even other imported smartphones anytime soon.

‘Fortnite’ Company Takes on Amazon, Steam with Retail Games Store

Fortnite

Epic Games, the popular company behind the massively popular game Fortnite has made an interesting decision.

The developer has now officially launched its own digital download storefront, the Epic Games Store, at a key juncture in the Holiday season.

Fortnite is available across computers, consoles, and mobile phones, not only makes and publishes its own video game titles but also develops and maintains a well-known, well-respected development suite called the Unreal Engine.

Just as “Fortnite” is expanding to accommodate more creative applications, so Epic Games is repositioning itself to occupy territory associated with industry giants Amazon and Steam, among others.

Fortnite for Android: Device Support List, Release Date & More

Epic is appealing to developers by undercutting competition in terms of its sales percentage — 12% instead of the standard 30% store cut — a policy it already applied to Unreal Engine licensees and had credited to the financial success of revenue earned through “Fortnite” cosmetic tweaks and season-based loyalty program.

And as well as having an established base among “Fortnite” players, it’s courting new customers with a series of rolling free giveaways until the end of 2019, starting with highly impressive sci-fi underwater exploration “Subnautica” on December 14 and acclaimed jump’n’run platformer “Super Meat Boy” on December 28.

That double-whammy of developer cut and free games allows Epic to challenge both Steam, whose 30% cut has been industry standard, and Amazon, whose streaming network Twitch has its own giveaway system set up for those within its Twitch Prime (i.e., Amazon Prime) membership tier.

There’s also a revenue share program for online streamers that lets developers incentivize online broadcast of their games’ playthroughs.

The Store launched December 7 with a selection of PC and Mac games, with Android “and other open platforms” planned for 2019.

It made its presence felt with a store logo displayed prominently at the end of many trailers premiered at The Game Awards on December 7.

Karachi Anti-Encroachment Drive: Operation at Circular Railway Begins

Karachi anti encroachment drive railway

The Circular Railway land is next on the hit list of the anti-encroachment drive which has been going on in Karachi for the past few weeks now.

The drive will begin from 11th Dec 2018, informed the additional deputy commissioner on Monday.

Illegal encroachment on the land will be demolished as Railway and District administration officials visited the Gharibabad railway track to survey the land.

Pakistan-China Bus Service: Booking, Ticket Price & More

However, as the officials reached the area, many store owners, who had illegally set up a local furniture market, had already cleared up.

While speaking to the media, Deputy Commissioner Wasimuddin stated:

“Today, we have just come to issue a warning to those who have set-up illegal stores and from tomorrow we will begin to raze the encroachments.”

He went on to add:

“In the first phase, Gharibabad furniture market will be razed and the railway track will be cleared,”

Over 10 points of the Karachi Circular Railway have illegal encroachment and houses have been constructed near the railway track points, while the land is also being used for parking.

We have yet to see how the official authorities are to deal with the matter and what is next on their ‘To-Do’ list.

sherry rehman

Sherry Rehman is that extraordinary female politician who is a trailblazer for what Pakistani women can achieve in all walks of life.

In 2008, she became the Minister for Information and Broadcasting to Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani and has always remained one of the most prominent leaders of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).

But that’s not how her professional career started!

She was educated at Smith College and later at the University of Sussex where she studied Art History and Political Science. Later, she began her career as a journalist and served as the editor-in-chief at The Herald.

She has co-authored the book “The Kashmiri Shawl: From Jamawar to Paisley” and has also served as a member of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors for 10 years.

Not just that, she’s also remained a former TV anchor for a current affairs show and served as the chairperson of the Pakistan Red Crescent Society!

Being an outspoken person, Sherry has often faced criticism from her rivals. Regardless of that, the politician has proved that she is a woman of substance with her achievements and political career

  1. Rehman was one of the closest acquaintances of Benazir Bhutto, the first female Prime Minister of Pakistan.

She worked side by side with Bhutto during the restoration of democracy in the nation. She worked hard to earn the loyalty of her leader and helped in coordinating party activists around the country.

2) For her services to prevail democracy in the country, Sherry Rehman was awarded a title “Democracy’s Hero” by International Republican Institute.

3) During her tenure as the Information Minister of Pakistan back in 2009, Rehman resigned from her post.

Her resignation came as a protest against the government’s attempt to put restrictions on freedom of the press.

Being a journalist herself, Sherry stood up for Pakistani media and she didn’t stop to raise a voice against her own party leadership. She also sponsored two press freedom bills: the Freedom of Information Bill and the Press Act, which protects journalists from arrest under the 1999 Press Ordinance.

She emerged as the first female politician to do so. She has also served as Pakistan’s first woman ambassador to the United States.

Legend of Maula Jatt Scores Day-And-Date Release In China

Legend of Maula Jatt

There is no secret that China is a huge market for South Asian films but so far, only Bollywood Blockbusters have managed a screening in the country, that too much later after their domestic debut.

However recently, it has been revealed that Bilal Lashari’s upcoming project ‘The Legend of Maula Jatt’ has scored a day-and-date release, which means a theatrical opening date that falls on the same day as the domestic debut, in China and we are already excited about it.

You heard it right! The most talked about film wasn’t in the news for no reason.

Maula Jatt will be the first ever first film from the subcontinent that will score the same date release in China with its domestic release in Pakistan and it will definitely prove to be quite profitable for the project.

Only a handful of big studio backed projects from Hollywood have been able to achieve such mainstream release in China. Even the most commercially successful Bollywood films from India like Dangal, Secret Super Star, Hindi Medium and Bahubali have been released in China after months or a year later after their domestic and international screening.

It’s no mean feat as China has a limited quota for foreign films to be released each year. Therefore, annually a small number of films are selected among the myriad of them released globally, after thorough scrutiny by the Chinese regulatory authorities.

Until now, only a handful of Hollywood movies belonging to the league of Spider-Man 2, Captain America and X Men have been the chosen ones to secure the Chinese theatrical release overlapping with US domestic and worldwide release.

This breakthrough for a local film is all set to give Pakistan a global footing in the world of cinematic craft. A film from an infant industry like Pakistan has set benchmarks for even the most commercially viable neighboring cinema in the subcontinent, Bollywood.

Not only is this groundbreaking but also a hope for all other Pakistani movies to make it big internationally by not following Bollywood trends but by setting a few for them.

The makers of the 1979 hit rendition took to social media and shared the first poster of the movie which took the internet by storm. the film is all set to release on Eidul Fitr next year and people are already excited about it.

Mindshare Pakistan takes home Top Honors at Campaign Asia ‘Agency of the Year’ Awards

Group M

South Asia ‘Agency of the Year’ awards was held in Mumbai on 4th December, recognizing the best individual and agency talent across South Asia in the industry.

The award recognized top achievers across the creative, media and activations industry spectrum.

Representing the Pakistani contingent, Mindshare Pakistan received the top award, as the Gold Award winner of the Pakistani Media Agency of the Year.

Innovative processes initiated and strong yearly results pushed Mindshare above its rivals as a deserving winner of the category.

Mindshare Pakistan, a subsidiary of Group M Pakistan, and owned by the Global WPP network, formally announced its operations in Pakistan back in 1999. With an elaborate and wide array of global and local clients, Mindshare is the biggest Media Agency of Pakistan.

The agency had more to celebrate later in the night, as Mindshare South Asia won the Gold in the South Asia Agency of the Year award, capping a successful year for the regional and local agencies.

Among the individual awards, the South Asia Young Achiever Award featured two aspiring female Pakistanis claiming the category as Gold and Silver Award Winners.

Sanober Ali Shah (Gold) and Wardia Ather (Silver), just in their mid-20s, were stepping up to positions of leadership at Mindshare Pakistan and became instrumental in executing key media campaigns and leading process reformations through the year, contributing the to the agency’s successes during that time.

We at Mindshare are committed to pushing boundaries. We strive for the unachievable, and that is what sets us apart from our competition. Our teams are interweaved in a closely knit network, which paves way for collaboration. That is where our best work comes from. Most importantly it is our Clients and Partners that enabled us, trusted us and vouched for us. We share this win with them equally.

Agha Zohaib, General Manager of MindShare Pakistan, shares his views after a celebrated night at the Agency of the Year Awards 2018.

It is particularly promising that young female talent shone through in the category, promising a change in the stereotype of Pakistan’s more patriarchal perception.

However, Mindshare Pakistan’s female talent excelling isn’t a new phenomenon, with Fatima Khalid, who led the Pepsi Co. team at Mindshare, being recognized in Campaign Asia “40 Women to Watch under 40” just earlier this year.

It is truly heartening to see both Young Achievers coming in from Mindshare Pakistan. We feel proud to have won Gold in Agency of the Year with Mindshare Pakistan, and silver with Maxus. It is humbling to have these honors making their way to the GroupM trophy cabinet.

GroupM CEO, Fouad Hussain, shared his thoughts on the success as well.

Campaign Asia proved to be a promising night for Mindshare Pakistan, and a hope that our local agencies keep delivering a higher standard of excellence in the future!

An Evening to Discuss #DigitalPakistan

digital pakistan

With the internet becoming a common commodity in Pakistan, a number of private sector companies in the country are aiming to digitalize. This will allow their customers to thrive in a digital economy.

Over the years, brands have launched various projects to promote digital innovation however most appear nothing more than promotional stunts.

If truth be told, only a handful of these companies are actually doing their utmost to support Pakistan’s Vision 2025 – the action plan to make the nation amongst the top 25 economies of the world.

One such brand is Jazz, which has become the government’s key stakeholder in the accomplishment of this goal through a myriad of digital solutions.

Being the country’s largest telecommunication brand that connects every 4th Pakistani to the world, Jazz has the resources to bridge the prevalent digital divide.

The recently appointed Head of Corporate Communications and Sustainability, Aisha Sarwari, hosted a grand dinner in Karachi on behalf of Jazz to inform and educate regarding this facility.

The evening celebrated the mobile operator’s achievements and discussed a way forward in implementing the right digital policies for the benefit of the masses and industries.

Amongst the guests were the likes of Kamal Siddiqui, Director of Center for Excellence in Journalism and Miftah Ismail, economist, and politician.

The evening started with an engaging ‘Pulse Check’ activity, where the guests with were provided digital clickers and asked a series of questions to decipher their understanding of Jazz and its ecosystem.

In the end, it was clear, that most guests knew about Jazz’s sustainability initiatives and a range of services on offer.

Following this interesting session, Aisha Sarwari took to the stage and invited Ali Mandviwalla, Managing Partner – Synergy Group; Rabia Garib, co-founder – ToffeTV; Jehan Ara, member PM’s taskforce on IT & Telecom and president – Nest I/O; Leon Menezes. Professor of Practice at Institute of Business Administration, Karachi, George Fulton, journalist and communicator; and Afia Salam, a journalist for a panel discussion.

The insightful discussion revolved around the challenges of monetizing high-value content; creating consistent policy regimes for a Digital Pakistan and taking the internet to communities on the other side of the digital divide.

Pak Suzuki Tax Relief Opposed by International Automotive Brands

SUZUKI

New entrants in Pakistan’s automobile industry have severely resisted the government’s willingness to allow Pak Suzuki tax exemptions under the auto policy (2016-2021).

After introducing the new auto policy, French automobile manufacturer Renault and South Korean companies like Kia and Hyundai, have announced their interest in setting up vehicle assembly plants in Pakistan.

Last month, Volkswagen also signed an agreement with a car dealer to start operations in Pakistan. These new entrants, plan to invest almost $3 Billion in Pakistan for producing various vehicles, ranging from cars to trucks.

Regal Automobile Plant Starts Production!

Pak Suzuki was exempted from taxation, under the Greenfield investment category by the previous government. However, the government was reluctant to receive fresh investment from the company, refusing to treat the automobile giant as a new entrant.

That has changed now as the PTI administration seems to show a lot of interest due to the pressure by the Japanese government and is willing to offer incentives as well.

Officials close to the development, Adviser to PM on commerce, industries, and investment Abdul Razaq Dawood have played a major role in convincing Imran Khan that Pak Suzuki should be treated under the Greenfield investment category.

If the Pakistan government does, in fact, do that, it is expected to receive almost $450 million worth of investment in return.

Officials have been critical of the adviser, stating that his view will encourage Pak Suzuki’s investment in the country but will hinder and disturb new entrants, as they would want the same privileges as the local brand.

Automobile Giant Datsun to Launch SUV for Emerging Markets

Currently, three dominant Japanese manufacturers are functioning in Pakistan:

  1. Pak Suzuki
  2. Indus Motors
  3. Honda Atlas

These automotive companies have a monopoly in the country, but they are also using technology that is obsolete and vehicle quality is poor.

The representatives of the new entrants also held a meeting this week with the Ministry of Industry and Production and raised the issue of allowing Pak Suzuki to invest under Greenfield category.

They raised serious concerns and protested against the way Pak Suzuki is being treated, and feared that it would disrupt their investment plans.

The new entrants also demanded that Suzuki should not be given the status of a new entrant and that import of used vehicles should also be banned.

The PMLN government had approved the automobile policy in order to break the monopoly of the 3 Japanese giants.

The Board of Investment (BOI) had refused tax exemptions for manufacturers such as Pak Suzuki and had also shown no interest in omitting the auto policy in any way.

We have yet to see what the future holds for Pak Suzuki and the new players into the automotive industry.
