Interest on Private Loans to be Banned: Senate’s Standing Committee

Interest on Private Loans

Senate’s Standing Committee has announced the prohibition of interest on private loans in Islamabad. A Bill seeking approval has been passed in regards to this decision.

This decision was considered at  Old PIPS Hall, Parliament Lodges in Islamabad during a meeting of the committee.

The Islamabad Capital Territory Prohibition of Interests on Private Loans, 2017- introduced by Senator Sirajul Haq was discussed and the Bill was deemed approved to be set forward to the Senate for final approval.

NICOP Requirement For Visiting Expatriates Abolished

Reportedly,  the document is a request for the complete ban on interest-based lending by individual and group of people. Accordingly, clause 3 of the Bill reads:

No money lander either individually or in a group of persons shall lend money for any purpose or advance loan to any person for the purpose of receiving interest thereon nor shall carry on an interest-based transaction in the Islamabad Capital Territory.

Whoever contravenes the provision of the sub-section (i) shall be punished with imprisonment of either description which may extend to 10 years but shall not be less than three years and shall also be liable to fine not exceeding one million rupees.

Any individual who intentionally and willfully abet, engages, assist or aid the money lender in lending money in contravention of the sub-section of Section 3 will be punished accordingly.

Those who molest a borrower or lender can serve up to 5 years in prison with a fine of Rs. 500,000 to pay back a loan/debt or interest on such loans.

NICOP Requirement For Visiting Expatriates Abolished

The government on Tuesday abolished the condition of carrying your National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP) for expatriates visiting the country.

According to the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis, the decision was made after Prime Minister’s Special Assistant, Zulfiqar Abbas Bukhari, made the recommendation.

Zulfi stated that the recommendation was approved by the PM:

“Now the overseas Pakistani can travel to Pakistan without visa.The ministry takes lead in initiating and implementing prime minister’s 100-day reformative agenda to ensure quick redressal of issues pertaining to expatriates and their children by achieving almost all set targets”

Imran Khan had, earlier, decided to undertake a few initiatives to aid overseas Pakistanis. He announced that the government will soon unveil a special incentive package aimed at encouraging overseas Pakistanis to transfer remittance through their banking channels.

PM also assured that he was fully aware of the problems faced by Pakistanis living abroad while sending remittances and retaining their legal properties in Pakistan.

HEC Hungary Scholarship 2019: Higher Education Commission(HEC) is offering scholarships to Pakistani students under the Stipendium Hungarian Scholarship Programme 2019-20. It is bilateral Higher Education and Scientific Exchange Programme between the Government of Hungary and HEC.

The programme is open for Pakistani Undergraduate, Masters and Ph.D. students.

HEC Commonwealth Scholarships 2019 in UK: How to Apply

Financial Coverage & Benefits

Tuition-free education: exemption from the payment of tuition fee

Monthly stipend: Bachelor and Masters Scholarships: monthly HUF 40,460/- (CCA EUR 130) contribution to the living expenses, for 12 months a year, until the completion of studies

Doctoral level: according to the current Hungarian legislation, monthly HUF 140,000/-(CCA EUR 450) at present – for 12 months a year, until the completion of studies.

Accommodation: Dormitory place or a contribution of HUF 40,000/- to accommodation costs for the whole duration of the scholarship period.

Medical insurance: Health care services according to the relevant Hungarian legislation (Act No. 80 of 1997, national health insurance card) and supplementary medical insurance.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicant must be a citizen of Pakistan/AJ&K.
  • Must be between the age of 18-22 years for undergraduate programmes, for which they are applying for admission and the age limit should not exceed from 35 years for postgraduate Master’s (18 years) and Ph.D. programs on 31st December 2018. In the case of Ph.D. programs, for full-time employees of public sector Universities, Colleges and R&D organizations the maximum age must be 40 years on 31st December 2018.
  • The applicant must have completed HSSC/Intermediate or equivalent for application in 04 years Bachelor’s (Undergraduate Program).
  • The applicant must have completed 16 years Bachelors/or equivalent Degree for application in Master’s (Postgraduate Program).
  • The applicant must have completed 18 years Degree/or equivalent for application in the Ph.D. Program.
  • The applicant must fill all the fields of the Hungary Application Form and HEC application form and no column or field should be left unfilled.
  • Certificates/Transcript/Degrees to be attached must be attested by the attesting authorities such as IBCC and HEC. Equivalence of O & A level from IBCC is mandatory.
  • It is the sole responsibility of the candidate to make sure that all technical/engineering/professional programmes which they are applying, must be accredited by the respective Councils/Governing Bodies such as PEC, PMDC etc.
  • IELTS/TOEFL scores as required, where applicable.
  • All applicants must submit the medical certificate of satisfactory health condition (issued not earlier than 1 month, a written certificate from a physician to prove that the applicant does not have the following illnesses: AIDS, Hepatitis A, B, C or any other epidemic conditions)
  • In case of final selection, applicants will have to submit a bond on legal paper to HEC that he/she will not change discipline after final award of scholarship, and immediately after completion of his/her degree, he/she will return back to Pakistan to serve the country for a period as prescribed by the HEC. In case of failure to do so, HEC reserves the right to recover from the candidate or his/her guarantor, a penalty amount as prescribed/decided by the HEC.
  • Applicants must fulfill all other requirements set by host Hungarian university/Higher Education Commission of Pakistan.
  • In the case of final selection, a candidate has to submit a bond agreement.

Applications will not be considered in the following cases:    

  • Hungarian citizens (including those with dual citizenships)
  • Former Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship holders, who are re-applying for studies in the same cycle of education (e.g. bachelor, master, doctoral). Candidates nominated by HEC in 2016-17, 2017-18 & 2018-19 batches of Stipendium Hungaricum Programme are not eligible to apply.
  • Applications misrepresenting any information, even if the misrepresentation is pointed out after the scholarship is awarded.
  • Result awaiting candidates are not eligible to apply.

Qatar’s Visa Center Finally Opens in Pakistan

As promised, Qatar’s Visa Center finally opens in Pakistan and has inaugurated its first branch in Islamabad.

The development has made Pakistan amongst the eight countries to have a Qatari visa facilitation center for easy processing of workers’ visas, looking for a job in the Gulf state.

Earlier, the Qatari ministry has announced setting up visa centers in 8 countries to facilitate citizens seeking employment opportunities. A letter was also sent to the PM assistant regarding this matter.

The details stated that these facilitation centers will benefit shortlisted candidates so that they would be able to secure a contract even before they arrive in the country.

The main motive of these visa centers is to ensure smooth and easy recruitment process by allowing applicants and that all necessary requirements are met before initiating a contract.

These centers will also ensure that no worker returns to their country after being rendered unfit to obtain a residence permit in Qatar. What’s more, they are also expected to protect worker’s rights and prevent exploitation at the hands of employers and intermediaries. This will also help speed up the process of recruitment.

This year, Qatar had promised 100,000 jobs for Pakistani workforce.

Now the Gulf State has shown interest in hiring more Pakistani worked ahead of 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Qatari Ambassador Saqr bin Mubarak Al-Mansour said on Thursday that Qatar is planning to hire more Pakistani workers for building infrastructure projects.

In 2016, Qatar had announced 100,000 employment opportunities for Pakistan, following that announcement 9,706 Pakistanis made their way to the country on a work visa.

In 2017, the number swelled to 11,592 individuals and 13,697 Pakistanis have successfully secured a job in Qatar.

Sindh Government Reconsiders Decision to Relocate Schools!

Parents can now take a sigh of relief as the Sindh government has decided to reconsider their decision to relocate schools.

Recently, the Government of Sindh along with other authorities have been conducting anti-encroachment drives and tackling the mafia in the educational system in the country.

The report stated that 99% of schools in Karachi are illegally operating in residential areas. Thus, the Sindh government had issued a notice to the schools giving them 30-days to vacate and relocate.

However, just a day after the notice was circulated, the decision has been withdrawn. Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani said that no action will be taken against the private schools situated on residential plots.

I want to assure parents and school owners that taking action against private schools will be our last option. For now, we don’t have any plans to shut down or seal schools. -Local Government MinisterSaeed Ghani

Private School Association Chairperson Tariq Shah said that he is thankful to Saeed Ghani and SBCA for realising the strength of private schools.

We definitely want rules and regulations in place for schools that will open in future, but the existing schools should not be affected. We are ready to negotiate with the government to formulate a policy. -Tariq Shah

He told parents not to worry as private schools will remain functional. A meeting with private schools is in the pipeline and is expected soon.

Pepsi & Coca-Cola to Invest $1.4 Billion in Pakistan

A number of leading global companies are aiming to invest in Pakistan due to its fast-growing population of 208 million people. The beverage giants, Coca-Cola and Pepsi have too joined the list of businesses to invest a whopping amount in the country.

According to Reuters, Pepsi and Coca-Cola are all set to invest $1.4 billion in Pakistan in the coming years. The executives from the two companies met with Prime Minister Imran Khan.

A delegation of Coca-Cola from Turkey announced in the meeting its future plans of $200 million investment in the coming two or three years.

Already, the company’s current investment in Pakistan amounts to $500 million.

Further investment by Coca-Cola will create new jobs, support ancillary industries and help the government earn incremental revenue through taxes.

Imran Khan assured the delegations of government’s complete support and facilitation towards companies willing to invest in the country.

It is no secret that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insfaaf’s (PTI) government is vying hard to bring major investments in the country and fulfill its promise of 10 million jobs to the youth.

Suzuki Motors to Invest & Expand Production in Pakistan

In another news, Suzuki Motors is also likely to invest $450 million in the economy to expand car production.

Federal Minister for Finance, Revenue, and Economic Affairs, Asad Umar has confirmed this on Twitter.

A delegation of the Suzuki Motors Corp called on Prime Minister Imran Khan at Prime Minister’s Office and briefed him about the existing investment of the corporation and future investment plans in the country.

What’s more, the world’s largest publicly traded international oil and gas company, Exon Mobil is also re-entering Pakistan after 27 years.

Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Asad Umar, on Tuesday, stated that Suzuki Motors has shown interest in investing $450 Million to expand car production in Pakistan.

A delegation of the Suzuki Motors Corp called on Prime Minister Imran Khan at his office. The delegation included Global Chairman Suzuki Osamu Suzuki, Kinji Saito, Masafumi Harano, Shiego Takezawa, Yusuke Katto, and Shafiq A Shaikh.

The Foreign Minister announced the good news on his official Twitter account!

The Japanese ambassador to Pakistan, Takashi Kurai, was also present during the meeting. The delegation briefed the PM about the existing investment of the Suzuki Motors Corp and its future investment plans in the country.

Illegally-Built Private Schools To Be Demolished: SBCA

The Government of Sindh has once again hit back at private institutes in a pursuit to bring an end to the mafia which has taken over the educational system of the province.

Reportedly, the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has issued a notification to the educational institutes which are operating in residential areas.

The schools have been warned that if they are not relocated, they will be either demolished or sealed.

Reportedly, it is being claimed that 99% of educational institutes (5,000 schools) in the city are functional on residential plots instead of proper commercial areas.

It further stated that using residential plot lease for commercial purposes is illegal.

Private school owners and businessmen who are operating illegally have been given a 30-day ultimatum to move out. If not complied with, their properties will be lockdown and any violations to the building will be dozed over.

On the other hand, many restaurants in DHA and towards Clifton are also reportedly closing down including Cafe Flo, Koel, Xanders, and others. Schools belonging in the area, including Nixor College, have also been warned.

While private schools have been warned, the anti-encroachment drive has been taken forward. In PECHS Block 2, bulldozers knocked down the Kindergarten play area belonging to Karachi Public School while cleaning up the street right next to it.

Private Schools Registrations Suspended Over Fee-Hike

High-end schools had their registrations suspended overtaking more than 5% of the fee. The government had allocated 3 months to these schools to return the excess amount back to the parents, failure to comply will result in the permanent ban on registrations.

IDEAS 2018 Traffic Plan Announced

The 10th International Defence Exhibition and Seminar- IDEAS 2018 is all set to begin in Karachi today, November 27 at the Expo Centre.

The four-day event is exclusively for trade visitors and official defence delegates.

Around 262 high-level delegations from 51 countries, officials of the Defence Export Promotion Organization (DEPO) will be attending the event.

Tram Service in Karachi to be Restored: Supreme Court

Touted as the biggest defence exhibition of the year, IDEAS 2018 will be showcasing new inventions of Pakistan’s Defence industry. Over 300 traffic policemen will be deployed around the exhibition venue.

A traffic plan has been issued to regulate direct routes for citizens to avoid any inconvenience.

University Road will be open for traffic throughout the four-day exhibition.

Traffic from Hassan Square to the National Stadium will be closed from 7 am on November 27.

The roads from Dalmia to Karsaz and New Town will remain open.

Hassan Square Flyover will be closed.

Traffic coming from Liaquatabad will be diverted towards University Road.

To avoid traffic, motorists are advised to use Shara-e-Pakistan, Shara-e-Faisal, Rashid Minhas Road and Shaheed-e-Millat.

Heavy traffic will be banned to use the road from Nipa to Millennium Mall and Karsaz to Hassan Square.

They will be allowed to travel alternative routes from Liaqatabad no.10, Nipa Chowrangi, Millenium and Karsaz.

Parking around the Expo Centre is banned for the event.

Residents of the area will only be allowed to enter by showing their ID cards.

Feroze Khan Finally Breaks Silence About his Relationship With Sajal Aly

In the past few years, Feroze Khan has skyrocketed to stardom with his back-to-back television hits, including Chup Raho, Gul-e-Rana, Khaani and the latest drama ‘Romeo Weds Heer’.

The heartthrob’s powerful performances and fierce characters have also made him bag various accolades.

It is to be noted that during his career, he developed a strong on-screen chemistry with Sajal Aly. The actor starred with her in two dramas, Chup Raho and Gul-e-Rana along with a movie ‘Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hai’.

In a heart-to-heart conversation with the acclaimed journalist Fifi Haroon, Khan finally cleared the air about his relationship with Sajal.

Fifi candidly asked the actor about Aangan’s teaser starring Sajal Ali. Feroze replied:

Sajal has literally blown me away with her acting, her dialogue delivery, and her expressions. I was thinking from where she has taken inspiration from for her role.

The host then boldly asked Feroze if he misses Sajal. Our hero replied:

If I will ever miss Sajal, I will pick up my phone and give her a call. We are quite normal now and there is nothing really between us.

Fifi then went a step further and asked her guest the nature of his relationship with Sajal.

We are still really good friends. I respect her a lot. She is a really brilliant actress and I wish all the prosperity in the world hits her.

At one point during the interview, Feroze revealed to Fifi that he was involved in multiple relationships before his marriage.

I did not have one involvement, I had multiple involvements before marriage.

However, Khan revealed that he is madly in love with his wife Alizeh and marriage indeed suits him.

E-street Restaurants in Karachi to be Shut Down?

The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has kickstarted an operation to seal or demolish buildings and properties built illegally in Karachi.

Strict action is being taken against properties built in violation of the approved building plan.

According to buzz on social media, many E-street restaurants including Koel, Xanders, Flo and Aylanto, have been issued notices to relocate from the residential block.

These popular eateries have been reportedly warned that they will be shut down after December.

Several private schools have also been notified the same.

Educational institutes like Pre School Plus, Origins, Links, Nixor and Haque Academy have been warned to relocate from the plots approved for residential purpose only.

Chai eateries have also been asked to vacate the spaces in Defense Housing Authority (DHA).

Chicken Meat Can Cause Cancer: Report

A public notice has also been released by SBCA recently regarding the “Construction Against Approved Plan and Misuse of Premises In violation of Section 6 (2) & (3) of SBCO 1979 and Against Land Use Plan in Karachi”.

The notice warns that the building plan of a plot approved for residential one house unit should not be used for any other purpose or it will be considered as the violation of the acts and misuse of the premises.

SBCA has also requested the Private Schools Association of Karachi to shift such institutes to a properly designated area during winter vacations in December.

Since many big names have been pointed out this time, let’s see what is going to be their action on this.

Karachi’s anti-encroachment drive by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) along with Karachi Development Authority (KDA) has now targeted the illegally built properties on Burns Road.

The authorities have demolished around 70 eateries located on the busiest street of Karachi, including the most popular ones, Waheed Kabab House and Delhi Rabri.

On the other hand, it is reported that many of the encroachments were removed by people themselves.

More shops including Fish Stall, Agha Sajji and Dehli Dhaee Baray have also been demolished along with Waheed Kabab House and Delhi Rabri. This is because these commercial based eateries were operating at residential plots and area.

Once upon a time, these restaurants were considered as landmarks and were the pride of the famous food street of Burns Road, located in one of the most engaging areas of Karachi.

Having their favorite food places getting demolished every other day, Karachities have shown a mixed response over this step by SBCA. Some of them are demanding to allocate an alternate space to the targeted restaurants.

Famous human rights activist Jibran Nasir has also shown his response over this matter!

According to Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Syed Saif-ur-Rehman, removal of all illegal constructions and structures made on footpaths, roads, streets, parks, and drains will continue.

He added that besides Burns Road, encroachments in Khori Garden, Lea Market, Joria Bazar, Kharadar, Mithadar, and Garden area will also be removed.
