IDEAS 2018 Traffic Plan Announced

The 10th International Defence Exhibition and Seminar- IDEAS 2018 is all set to begin in Karachi today, November 27 at the Expo Centre.

The four-day event is exclusively for trade visitors and official defence delegates.

Around 262 high-level delegations from 51 countries, officials of the Defence Export Promotion Organization (DEPO) will be attending the event.

Tram Service in Karachi to be Restored: Supreme Court

Touted as the biggest defence exhibition of the year, IDEAS 2018 will be showcasing new inventions of Pakistan’s Defence industry. Over 300 traffic policemen will be deployed around the exhibition venue.

A traffic plan has been issued to regulate direct routes for citizens to avoid any inconvenience.

University Road will be open for traffic throughout the four-day exhibition.

Traffic from Hassan Square to the National Stadium will be closed from 7 am on November 27.

The roads from Dalmia to Karsaz and New Town will remain open.

Hassan Square Flyover will be closed.

Traffic coming from Liaquatabad will be diverted towards University Road.

To avoid traffic, motorists are advised to use Shara-e-Pakistan, Shara-e-Faisal, Rashid Minhas Road and Shaheed-e-Millat.

Heavy traffic will be banned to use the road from Nipa to Millennium Mall and Karsaz to Hassan Square.

They will be allowed to travel alternative routes from Liaqatabad no.10, Nipa Chowrangi, Millenium and Karsaz.

Parking around the Expo Centre is banned for the event.

Residents of the area will only be allowed to enter by showing their ID cards.

Latif Kapadia Memorial Welfare Trust in collaboration with Aaj Ka Random & New Louvre Art Gallery held a framed photo exhibition for supporting the trust. Held on Sunday, the exhibition showcased the work of various contributors to the Aaj Ka Random group.

Aaj Ka Random is a group of global photography enthusiasts, who donated their framed clicks for sale.

The contribution collected through the exhibition was donated to LKMWT’s Community Outreach Program.

This LKMWT program is operational in different parts of the city, the aim of which is to hold regular medical camps for health awareness and prevention of diseases.

The event was graced by friends and family of renowned artist Mr. Latif Kapadia (late), along with the son of aforementioned, Mr. Ahmed Kapadia—Managing Director, Synergy Group. Other family and friends included Ms. Naeema Kapadia, Mr. Hasan Ahmed, Mrs. Farhat Kapadia Mehboob, Mr. Imran Kapadia, Dr. Dinaz Ghandhi, Mr. Arsalan Khan, Mrs. Jamila Khan, Mr. Sajid Dadabhoy, Ms. Manahil Kapadia, Mrs. Tahira Ahmed, and Mrs. Zahra Chugtai who have been supporting the trust since long.

Speaking at the occasion, Ms. Naeema Kapadia—Executive Director, LKMWT said,

“We are humbled by the response of the audience for our exhibition held for a noble cause. We also would like to extend our gratitude to Mr. Rahim Jivani and Mrs. Amreen Jivani of the New Louvre Art Gallery for hosting the event for the Trust. The exhibition was a great success in terms of the collection of funds for the noble cause. The proceeds of the sales made here today, will be a great contribution towards the efforts of LKMWT. The framed photos were also pledged to different orphanages and/or old people’s homes.”

After the exhibition, the framed photos will also be available online, on the Latif Kapadia Memorial Welfare Trust’s Facebook page for sale.

These proceeds will be contributed to the different Community Outreach Programs which are run under the banner of “Latif Kapadia Memorial Welfare Trust”.

The heartthrob’s powerful performances and fierce characters have also made him bag various accolades.

In a heart-to-heart conversation with the acclaimed journalist Fifi Haroon, Khan finally cleared the air about his relationship with Sajal.

Fifi candidly asked the actor about Aangan’s teaser starring Sajal Ali. Feroze replied:

Sajal has literally blown me away with her acting, her dialogue delivery, and her expressions. I was thinking from where she has taken inspiration from for her role.

The host then boldly asked Feroze if he misses Sajal. Our hero replied:

If I will ever miss Sajal, I will pick up my phone and give her a call. We are quite normal now and there is nothing really between us.

Fifi then went a step further and asked her guest the nature of his relationship with Sajal.

We are still really good friends. I respect her a lot. She is a really brilliant actress and I wish all the prosperity in the world hits her.

At one point during the interview, Feroze revealed to Fifi that he was involved in multiple relationships before his marriage.

I did not have one involvement, I had multiple involvements before marriage.

However, Khan revealed that he is madly in love with his wife Alizeh and marriage indeed suits him.

E-street Restaurants in Karachi to be Shut Down?

The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has kickstarted an operation to seal or demolish buildings and properties built illegally in Karachi.

Strict action is being taken against properties built in violation of the approved building plan.

According to buzz on social media, many E-street restaurants including Koel, Xanders, Flo and Aylanto, have been issued notices to relocate from the residential block.

These popular eateries have been reportedly warned that they will be shut down after December.

Several private schools have also been notified the same.

Educational institutes like Pre School Plus, Origins, Links, Nixor and Haque Academy have been warned to relocate from the plots approved for residential purpose only.

Chai eateries have also been asked to vacate the spaces in Defense Housing Authority (DHA).

Chicken Meat Can Cause Cancer: Report

A public notice has also been released by SBCA recently regarding the “Construction Against Approved Plan and Misuse of Premises In violation of Section 6 (2) & (3) of SBCO 1979 and Against Land Use Plan in Karachi”.

The notice warns that the building plan of a plot approved for residential one house unit should not be used for any other purpose or it will be considered as the violation of the acts and misuse of the premises.

SBCA has also requested the Private Schools Association of Karachi to shift such institutes to a properly designated area during winter vacations in December.

Since many big names have been pointed out this time, let’s see what is going to be their action on this.

Karachi’s Anti-Encroachment Drive: 70 Iconic Burns Road Eateries Demolished

Karachi’s anti-encroachment drive by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) along with Karachi Development Authority (KDA) has now targeted the illegally built properties on Burns Road.

The authorities have demolished around 70 eateries located on the busiest street of Karachi, including the most popular ones, Waheed Kabab House and Delhi Rabri.

On the other hand, it is reported that many of the encroachments were removed by people themselves.

More shops including Fish Stall, Agha Sajji and Dehli Dhaee Baray have also been demolished along with Waheed Kabab House and Delhi Rabri. This is because these commercial based eateries were operating at residential plots and area.

Once upon a time, these restaurants were considered as landmarks and were the pride of the famous food street of Burns Road, located in one of the most engaging areas of Karachi.

Having their favorite food places getting demolished every other day, Karachities have shown a mixed response over this step by SBCA. Some of them are demanding to allocate an alternate space to the targeted restaurants.

Famous human rights activist Jibran Nasir has also shown his response over this matter!

According to Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Syed Saif-ur-Rehman, removal of all illegal constructions and structures made on footpaths, roads, streets, parks, and drains will continue.

He added that besides Burns Road, encroachments in Khori Garden, Lea Market, Joria Bazar, Kharadar, Mithadar, and Garden area will also be removed.

Engro Foods Limited inks MOU with International Finance Corporation for Dairy Market Development

Engro Foods Limited, core purpose is to provide better nutrition to Pakistan, a good living to farmers, now and for generations to come. In lieu of the same spirit, EFL joined hands with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the prestigious World Bank (WB).

The two corporate giants signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for Dairy Market Development project in Pakistan earlier this month at the Engro Foods Limited Head Office in Karachi. The MoU was signed by Ali Ahmed Khan Managing Director, EFL and by Tania Lozansky, Senior Manager Advisory Manufacturing Agri business & Services, IFC.

The focal purpose of the memorandum was to initiate joint efforts to unlock the potential and strengthen the development of Pakistan’s dairy industry. Both the organization will work together to promote sustainable living for farmers and reduce poverty by enabling dairy farmer empowerment.

This will eventually result in developing awareness about best dairy farming practices and increase the quality of dairy output. The MoU promises to facilitate the farmer and other stakeholder access to knowledge, technology and financing and to empower women along dairy value chains.
Speaking at the occasion Ali Ahmed Khan, Managing Director Engro Foods Limited said, “Engro Foods purpose to provide better nutrition to Pakistan and a good living to our farmers remains the core of every initiative we undertake. We work with 250,000+ dairy farmers and have disseminated over 1 million trainings on best dairy farming practices. Our farmers have received Rs. 51 billion as direct incomes from Engro Foods since 2005. We have in the past and we will continue to play our role in creating a complete eco system to facilitate sustainable living for farmers through our dairy development programs. The signing of this agreement with IFC shows our commitment to strengthen the dairy sector of Pakistan.”

Coke Fest 2018 was held in Lake City Lahore this weekend and in a short time became the talk of the town!

There were a number of food stalls at the event, however Innovative biscuits caught the attention of its visitors creating quite a stir at the festival.

For a second time this year, Innovative Biscuits brought back their very successful Ice Cream Sandwich Bar to their stall.

Customers queued up to get a pack of Innovative Digestive Biscuits. They also got a chance to pick their favourite ice cream flavour and toppings and enjoyed a free Innovative Ice Cream Sandwich.

The Mystery Machine was the Highlight of the Event!

Adding to the excitement, the stall had a “Mystery Machine” – a vending machine that intrigued visitors with the  “Try Me” Button.

Each time someone pressed the button, the entire area came to life! Lights flashed, sirens buzzed, confetti popped and a mystery hand from the machine delivered a surprise gift!

The Wonderful Surprises were a Cherry on Top for the visitors!

Visitors received many gifts including packs of Innovative biscuits, board games, flowers, pizzas and many other exciting prizes.

The sight at the festival around the stall and the mystery machine was a throwback to the non-social media days when people gathered around vending machines and shared the experience together rather than just on their phones.

Drone Sampling By Innovative Biscuits Wowed Everybody

A number of drones were flown from the Innovative Biscuits stall with baskets attached to carry packs of Innovative Biscuits. The flying drones also dropped giveaways much to the delight of the attendees!

 

It is to be noted that Innovative Biscuits were the first ones to bring the concept of drone sampling to Pakistan at the previous Coke Fest.

The Audience Relaxed at the iDisconnect Lounge

Most importantly, the biscuit brand created an iDisconnect lounge at their stall which provided a seating area to the visitors.  As the Coke Fest got increasingly crowded, visitors were able to enjoy their meals in a comfortable area.

However, there was a catch! 

Those who wanted to hang out in the lounge had to put away their mobile phones in the iDisconnect box and take a break from technology! Once done, the area was theirs to have a good time with family and friends enjoying the break from the disconnect from social media.

System for Blocking Unverified Phones to go Online Soon!

The federal cabinet is expected to give grant approval for the implementation of Device Identification Registration and Block System (DIRBS) on Friday. This system will block unverified/fake IMEIs mobile phones and will be implemented from 26th November.

The state is said to also approve the introduction of an amnesty scheme for smuggled or phones with fake/duplicate IMEIs.

However, Chairman of PTA, Mohammad Naveed has stated that summary was presented for the last meeting was deferred.

The deadline is expected to be 26th November and may also be extended to the very last day of the month.

The chairman also added that the objective behind the DIRBS is to stop smuggled phones with the fake IMEIs as not only are these devices resulting in a huge loss to the national exchequer but also posing a valid security threat.

The cabinet will consider six items agenda including;

Revision of GoP policies to enable import of used mobile devices and prevention of smuggling through implementation of DIRBS by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA)

According to the summary, the import policy order 2016, will be amended to allow the import of mobile devices (having SIM/IMEI functionality) subject to the following conditions:

  1. Used devices which offer 3G, 4G and next-generation technologies will be importable;
  2. Such devices shall be models which are already PTA type- approved and having valid GSMA IMEI etc;
  3. The clearance of these devices shall be subject to certification of above conditions through a certificate of compliance (CoC) issued by PTA;
  4. In case of non-fulfilment of the above requirements, importers (commercial/individual entities etc) may be allowed to re-export such devices by customs authorities.

Furthermore, PTA will revise its regulation allowing all entities to import mobile devices model type-approved by PTA after issuance of CoC.

The used cell phones shall be subject to the same rates of leviable duty/taxes as are applicable to brand new phones.

PTA DIRBS Can Block Stolen or Smuggled Mobile Phones!

A mechanism for assessment of duty/taxes on used phones will be worked out with the help of FBR in consultation with Registered Mobile Association.

All mobile devices active on Cellular Mobile Networks within Pakistan as of 26 November 2018 shall remain operational with service interruption till the useful life of the device.

The stocks available in the market that are not activated by 26th November on Cellular Networks will be allowed to regularize on payment of leviable duty/taxes on or before 31st December after furnishing of CoC issued by PTA. No fine shall be imposed on such devices.

The disposal of confiscated cell phones (new/used) through auction by customs authorities shall be subject to issuance of technical evaluation certification/CoC by PTA. Such devices will accordingly be White-Listed by DIRBS.

Where this innovation is beneficial in many cases, it can also lead to some extremely harmful effects in others.

According to a recent finding by Food and Drug Administration (FDA), broiler chickens which are raised by poultry farmers for meat production, may contain Arsenic, a carcinogen associated with various cancers.

Arsenic, a heavy metal found, has been linked with many diseases. The long-term exposure to this carcinogenic element can increase the risk of cancer in the skin, lungs, kidneys and bladder.  It is naturally found in the earth’s crust, water and air, and inorganically generated by industrial waste.

The fact that even inhaling Arsenic at the workplace can cause lung cancer determines the toxicity of this extremely dangerous element.

The question that how does Arsenic end up in our chickens?

Since broiler chickens are solely bred for the purpose of producing meat, many poultry farmers intentionally add Roxarsone, an Arsenic containing drug, in the chicken feed for  better color and texture of meat.

Though present in a small quantity, Arsenic from this drug keeps accumulating in the liver of the chicken and is spread throughout its body through blood circulation. It subsequently ends up in our body when we consume the meat.

According to PM Khan, almost 55 lakh Pakistanis who are deserving will be able to make the most of the grants.

T-Series to Take YouTube’s Top-Spot from PewDiePie?

Bollywood music giant T-Series might just overtake controversial Swedish vlogger PewDiePie to become the top-ranked channel on YouTube’s subscriber chart in the coming days in a new landmark for India’s digital rise.

T-Series will become the first non-English-language channel to hold the top spot on the world’s most popular video platform as smartphone ownership soars in the country of 1.25 billion people.

“We’re very excited, for the organisation and for India. An Indian channel becoming number one is a big compliment for the entire country,” T-Series chairman Bhushan Kumar told AFP.

Few outside the Indian diaspora will know T-Series’ typically upbeat song and dance videos, but they are already the most-watched on YouTube.

They have been seen more than 53 billion times, again beating PewDiePie — whose videos have notched just over 19 billion views — as well as Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift.

The Swede, whose real name is Felix Kjellberg, has had the highest number of subscribers for five years during which he has regularly been in hot water over his videos.

In September last year, he apologised after he was heard using a racial slur in an expletive-laden rant against an opponent while playing a live-streamed computer game.

In 2017, he lost contracts with YouTube and Disney over anti-Semitic comments. He was temporarily blocked from Twitter in 2016 after joking he had joined the Islamic State group.

– ‘World recognition’ –

With T-Series rapidly closing in, fans of the Swedish gamer have rallied to push up his subscriber numbers in recent days but that will likely only delay the inevitable.

On Thursday both had over 71 million subscribers. PewDiePie was ahead by around 150,000 with T-Series expected to overtake it in coming days.

“It will give us recognition all over the globe,” chairman Kumar said.

The company, one of India’s biggest record labels, operates 29 channels in Hindi, Tamil, Punjabi and other languages. It also airs health fitness videos and children’s cartoons.

T-Series was founded by Kumar’s father, Gulshan Kumar, in 1983.

He was a fruit juice seller who started selling Bollywood music cassettes and became a legendary Hindi film music producer, enjoying massive success with the soundtrack to the 1990 film “Aashiqui” (Romance). He was murdered by Mumbai mafia members in 1997.

As well as producing music videos, T-Series also buys film soundtracks and collaborates with artists around India, providing a platform for their content.

Its most-watched music video is Guru Randhawa’s “Lahore”, which was uploaded in December last year and has been viewed almost 620 million times.

Kumar refused to say how much money T-Series makes from YouTube but Bloomberg News reported recently that the site accounts for around a quarter of its annual sales, which are about $100 million.

– ‘Sky’s the limit’ –

T-Series started posting videos on YouTube in 2011.

By October 2016 it had around 12 million subscribers and total hits of 11 billion, according to Social Blade, a website that tracks YouTube viewership.

That month India’s richest man, Mukesh Ambani, rolled out a new 4G network called Reliance Jio. He offered bargain-basement data plans, sending shockwaves through India’s telecoms market.

T-Series’ views rose quickly before skyrocketing this year.

In January, subscribers were at 31 million while its views reached 29 billion before soaring to 71 million and 53 billion respectively now.

“People say it’s a successful channel because data is more or less free. It’s not that. There are so many channels in India but we are becoming number one because of great content,” said Kumar.

Mobile internet users in India have increased from around 306 million in October 2015 to 478 million in June 2018, according to the Internet and Mobile Association of India.

And with millions more Indians still to buy their first smartphones the country’s YouTube channels are going to keep hitting new heights.

“It’s increasing day by day. The sky is the limit,” said Kumar.

Chinese Consulate in Karachi Attacked: All Terrorists Down

Police and Rangers have killed three terrorists who tried to enter the Chinese Consulate but failed to do so because of tight security.

The vehicle which these terrorists had travelled in to reach the Chinese Consulate has also been taken into custody. The vehicle is reportedly being said to have explosives inside.

Traffic has been diverted away from the perimeter so that the operation can continue with ease.

Update: Another terrorist is reportedly killed, it is expected that there are at least two more terrorists remaining.

Geo News has also reported that the Chinese officials within the consulate are safe. A total of two terrorists have been shot dead in the operation.

Rangers and other officials are checking each vehicle and residence to ensure that there are no hidden bombs or weapons.

Our priority was to secure the lives of citizens and the consulate staff. The terrorists could not take any hostage, kill or injured anyone. Those who do not want to see Pakistan progress were behind this act  -Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi

Reports of gunfire and explosions near the Chinese Consulate Karachi came pouring on Friday Morning.

The smoke of a black cloud can still be seen near the building where suspected terrorists tried to enter the premises but failed to do so because of heavy security.

A heavy contingent of police and rangers have arrived at the scene following the incident in Karachi’s Clifton area.

Pakistani Student Murdered in China – FO Dismisses Reports

As of now, two police officers have been killed and bullet shots can still be heard, while one security guard deployed at the Chinese Consulate was injured and in being said to be has been taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The initial report states that multiple armed men launched what appears to be a terror attack at around 9:30 am. The attackers hurled hand grenades and then opened firing targetting the security guards of the consulate.

Witnesses and officials added that 3-4 men tried to break into the consulate. Rangers have taken over the scene as an operation has been launched under the supervision of SSP South Mir Mohammad Shah after sealing the area.

A female police officer, SSP Suhai Talpur, led the operation against the terrorists.

The houses surrounding the Chinese Consulate in Karachi have also been sealed by the authorities. It is being considered that the terrorists might have tried to escape to the residential houses nearby for cover. However, there is no official report of it.

Geo news has reported that at least one of the terrorists is dead, weapons and a suicide jacket were found from near his body.

The Herald, a publication of the Dawn Media Group, has been in circulation since the early 1970’s. It will be rolling out its commemorate 50th-year-anniversary issue in January 2019 which is speculated to be the final one.

According to sources, employees have been asked to work on the anniversary edition, and have been informed that it will be their last. The sources have further mentioned that this decision has been taken because of a financial ‘crunch’.

Joint Secretary Karachi Press Club Mr Naimat Khan took it to Twitter to break the news.
