Third Tier Helped to Overcome Decline in Tobacco Revenues: FBR

tobacco revenues

At the second meeting of Special Senate committee on tobacco tax revenues, the Federal Bureau of Revenue (FBR) has shared facts that a policy decision to introduce the third tier of excise duty on cigarettes was taken as a corrective action to arrest the declining trend in revenues from tobacco sector.

According to FBR, the third tier and unprecedented enforcement drive against illicit manufacturers had not only helped compliant tobacco sector regain its lost volume but also resulted in revenue growth of around 20 percent to Rs 88.5 billion during 2017-18 against Rs 74.1 billion collected during the same period last fiscal year. Interestingly, despite a sharp decline in their market share, the two multinational players contributed almost 98% of tax revenues from the tobacco sector. Meanwhile, illicit cigarette manufacturers have caused an estimated loss of over Rs 130 billion to the national exchequer in past five years.

Before the introduction of the third tier, revenue collections from tobacco industry stood at Rs 88.40 billion in the financial year 2013-14, Rs 102.88 billion in 2014-15 and Rs 114.19 billion in 2015-16. Thereafter, a sharp decline in revenue to Rs 74.1 billion was registered for the first time in many years in 2016-17 as the price gap between tax-evaded illegal cigarettes and legal tax-paid industry kept on increasing to a point where most of the smokers shifted their consumption to the tax evaded cigarettes being manufactured in Mardan and Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJ&K).

The second meeting of the special committee, headed by Senator Kalsoom Parveen, was attended by Senators Dilawar Khan, Dr. Ashok and Azam Swati. The FBR Chairman, members of civil society and industry representatives were also invited to the session.

Industry representatives further explained that prior to the introduction of the third tier, the market share of illicit cigarettes had surged to 40 percent. This share was estimated by Nielsen, a market research agency that is well reputed globally and could be validated by FBR through an independent survey or audit of the tobacco sector.

During the meeting, there was also a discussion on the menace of cigarette smuggling that was hurting the local exchequer.  It was highlighted that there is a wrong assumption that all local manufacturers are tax compliant and there is no illicit cigarette production from them. This contradicts facts about raids, multiple seizure reports by FBR over the past two years.

The two-pronged strategy of FBR showing consistency in tobacco taxation policy and unprecedented enforcement efforts to maintain the momentum in fight against illicit cigarettes in Pakistan has decreased the market share of tax evaded brands from 40 percent to 35 percent, which shows that authorities are moving in the right direction to curb menace of illicit trade and boost government revenues.

Pakistan to Introduce 5G Technology in 2019!

Here’s the Real Story Behind Ahsan Khan’s ‘British’ Accent on BBC

Ahsan khan

Ahsan Khan is that versatile Pakistani superstar who has a huge portfolio of successful projects to his credits.

He has created ripples in Pakistan’s entertainment industry with his iconic roles in Vasl, Dastaan, Udaari, and Mirat Ul Uroos. Not to forget, he has made his mark on silver screen too with movies like Ghar Kab Aao Gay and Chupan Chupai.

It’s not just his debonair looks that make his fans fall in love with him. Khan’s excellence in acting and down-to-earth nature adds to his charm. One is compelled to watch him and appreciate his acting trysts.

Ahsan Khan is Being Loved by this Bollywood Celebrity [Watch Video]

Recently, Ahsan Khan was in London to attend the International Pakistan Prestige Awards (IPPA) 2018. So much so, he even made us proud by bagging the ‘Star Of The Year’ award.

As he is an actor with powerful opinions and strong views, Khan was interviewed by BBC about his take on PEMRA’s warning to Pakistani dramas.

Always representing Pakistan in a dignified manner, the hero spoke his heart out how important it is to educate the masses on sensitive subjects.

Social media reacted to his video in the most shocking way. It was heartbreaking to see that the actor was ridiculed for flaunting a ‘fake’ British accent. Meanwhile, his thought-provoking message was ignored and somewhere lost amongst all the hate he received.

For those who are unaware, Ahsan is a British born Pakistani. He was raised in U.K, received his early education in the West and was 12 years old when he came to Pakistan.  As a young student in Lahore, his accent was always made fun of.

After all these years, he still frequently travels to London as his family resides there. So no way Khan was feigning an accent while talking to BBC.

Guess it was a surprise for Pakistani media as they must be hearing him talk in British for the first time.

However, it is a huge responsibility on our end to not make a mimicry out of stars we love so much. These celebrities represent us worldwide and add to the worth of Pakistan. If we, being Pakistanis will troll and judge them, outsiders won’t hesitate to shame our icons either.

We love you, Ahsan Khan! More power to the heartthrob.

Ahmed Shehzad Likely to be Banned for Six Months: Reports

Domino’s Pizza Starts Drone Delivery in Pakistan

domino's pakistan

Imagine ordering a pizza and instead of your meal arriving on a bike, it arrives in no time from the sky!

Well, Flying Food is now a reality!

Domino’s Pizza has just raised the bar by declaring an innovative way of delivering pizzas.  Surpassing vehicles of all sorts, the brand has begun its Drone Delivery Service in a bid to ensure faster delivery.

It all started when the Domini’s Pizza started teasing that they are all set to roll out something new for their customers.

We clearly have thought of everything, haven't we? Got a clue as to what's about to come?#GreatnessFromDominos #BrandNewDelivery

Domino's Pizzaさんの投稿 2018年9月7日金曜日

Not even in their wildest dreams, anybody could have thought that Domino’s Pizza will be introducing drones.

Just a few moments away till the big reveal. Keep those guesses coming in!#NewDeliveryMethod #GreatnessFromDominos

Domino's Pizzaさんの投稿 2018年9月7日金曜日

Finally, the big reveal was made by that brand and became the first in Pakistan to introduce the idea to the nation.

Drone Delivery

Keep your passports ready as we take off into the unknown. If you spot a drone flying around in your neighborhood, please don't try to take it down, it could be someone's lunch!#Dominos #DroneDelivery #GreatnessFromDominos

Posted by Domino's Pizza on Saturday, September 8, 2018

Pakistanis have the most hilarious reaction to this new innovation!

However, is this actually more efficient than the traditional method of delivery?

With foodies and their growing demand for speedy delivery, the eatery aimed to make it all the easier with an instant collection of food.

Drone service will surely defeat the challenges of long-mile deliveries, logistics costs, and traffic delays. Research reveals that it is also environmentally friendly and efficient.

However, while a delivery bike or a truck can carry hundreds of pizzas, Domino’s drone service will surely fail in transporting meals ordered in large quantity. Also, since the element of a delivery guy will be minimized, so would the Cash on Delivery option.

What’s more, they are an expensive mode of transportation with a low battery life. Operating drones is a tricky task as they require deep technical familiarity. Harsh weather will also come into play while using the device.

Domino’s Pizza first introduced the service in New Zealand with the world’s ultimate pizza drone delivery.

“The use of drones is the next stage of the company’s expansion into the artificial intelligence space and gives us the ability to learn and adopt new technologies in the business,” stated Domino’s Group CEO Don Meij.

The pursuit of technological innovation is happening all over the world. There is a growing interest from global players to invest in this revolution. Uber is already experimenting with Drone technology while Amazon Prime is already delivering goods with a drone.

Mercedes-Benz has also announced a partnership with Silicon Valley Drone Startup Matternet to develop an integrated Van/Drone delivery system.

Will the concept work in Pakistan? Let us know in the comments below.

The Reason of the Alleged Ban

The report by Gulf Daily News revealed that as many as 50 forged Pakistani passports issued by the Pakistani Embassy in Bahrain have been discovered by immigration officials.

However, in another report, Pakistani passport holders in Bahrain are being demanded to visit their nearest police station with official documents for fingerprint verification.

A 30-year-old banker living in Bahrain for less than two years stated:

I got a call from the Muharraq Police Station two weeks ago asking me to go with my original passport and CPR for verification

I went there to find at least 30 Pakistanis waiting in queue, and one by one we were asked if the documents were original.

All Pakistanis are being summoned for this verification and I also learn that soon a no-objection-certificate will be issued after the verification.

The matter is now being escalated on social media so that relevant authorities can take urgent note of the matter and resolve it for Pakistanis living in Bahrain, legally.

The Hate U Give

Pakistani Producer & Director Wins ‘Best Documentary’ Award at DCSAFF

The 7th annual Washington DC South Asain Film Festival concluded on 9th September where short movies and thought-provoking documentaries, engrossing feature films, from individuals from the origin of Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and other countries were screened.

The festival was held in collaboration with Women in Film and Television Society and Montgomery College in the American capital.

The red carpet glistened with big names in the film industry including Boney Kapoor, Swara Bhaskar, Janhvi Kapoor, Suraj Sharma, Catherine Hand, Kimberly Skyrme, Petrina D’Rozario, Piymush Punjani the director of Opening Night Film 5 Rupiya to name a few.

A total of 6 attractions were submitted by Pakistanis, including a feature film titled ‘Some Lover to Some Beloved’ a short film titled ‘Grand Pa and I), and a documentary titled ‘The Unknown Mountaineers’ and more.

Director and Producer of The Unknown Mountaineers, Sherbano Saiyid, was awarded ‘Best Documentary’ Award at the event.

Eight young women from Shimshal, Hunza, led by Karachi-based, independent filmmaker Shehrbano Saiyid broke several records when they conquered three peaks with temperatures dipping -10 or less, at the Karakoram Range, in Gilgit-Baltistan region.

According to mountaineering official from Shimshal, Qudrat Ali:

“these girls summited three 6000m peaks (close to 20,000ft) back to back within six days. This is a record not only for women but for all non-professional Pakistani climbers and trekkers.”

This team of eight women aged between 18 to 25, manoeuvred two unclimbed routes, which are now named after them — including a mountain that had never been climbed before.

Two of these mountains have been named after these Hunza women. Five Nannies Peak 1 and Five Nannies Peak 2. The decision was made by the group,” said Shehrbano.

Dubbed Pakistan Women’s Expedition (PWE), the eight-member team is organized and led by Shehrbano, who initiated this project as part of her documentary series on Pakistan’s northern areas, and life in the Karakoram — one of the biggest glaciers and mountain attractions in the world.

I wanted to share the stories of people who live here, in my documentaries and through their stories, show the true picture of diversity, the richness of tradition and the tremendous beauty of the mountainous region of Pakistan

These people are tourism-thirsty,” Bano added.

Congratulations to the talented lady!

PIA Passengers Stranded in Toronto: Female Protestor Arrested at the Airport

PIA

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has made it to the headlines yet again and as predicted, for all the wrong reasons.

Hordes of passengers, including 5 infants and 7 wheelchair-bound senior citizens, have been left stranded at the Toronto Pearson International Airport due to 12-hour flight delay. Angry protestors took to social media to report the incident.

It all started when the aviation service first announced a waiting period of 4 hours due to a technical difficulty in the plane.

However, PIA officials did not update the passengers regarding the recommencement of the journey, making the delay as long as 12 hours.

As per various reports surfacing on Twitter, no accommodations have yet been given to the stranded passengers.

Meanwhile, renowned Pakistani filmmaker Rafay Rashidi is also grounded at the airport and slammed PIA for mismanagement.

“many senior citizens in wheel chairs sitting in line – infants – and frustrated travelers- Rafay Rashidi”

The outcry by the passengers has escalated matters at the airport.

The security officials have reportedly taken a female protestor under custody after she lost her cool over the delay.

So far no action has been taken by the national carrier to solve the crisis at hand. No PIA representative has yet addressed the passengers or informed them about the flight schedule.

However, PIA has responded to Rafay Rashdi on Twitter and has asked the details of the flight.

“Shahid Afridi you beauty, what a win!” do you remember these words? Do they bring back nostalgic memories from when Pakistan beat India at Asia Cup 2014? Well, how can one forget?

When India rolled out their #MaukaMauka campaign, one could feel how over-confident they were as to who will lift the Asia Cup trophy. However, their dreams were soon crushed and Sri Lanka took the title.

Now, even more determined to bring the trophy home, the Asia Cup #KnockThemOut campaign is a direct hit at arch-rival Pakistan. Both giants are set to lock horns on 19th September and we might just see an Indo-Pak final!

Starring Bollywood movie ‘3 Idiots’ star Omi Vadiya aka Chatur Ramalingam, the TVC focuses on how annoying neighbours can be. Labelling him as ‘Pange waala Padosi’, the campaign focuses on how such neighbours will do whatever it takes to bring you down and belittle you.

Alibaba Co-Founder Jack Ma Announces Retirement!

jack ma

Alibaba co-founder and chief Jack Ma announced he will leave from the Chinese e-commerce giant Monday to devote his time to philanthropy focused on education.

Ma was an English teacher before starting Alibaba in 1999 and built it into a multibillion-dollar internet colossus.

His own worth has soared along with that of the company, which was valued at $420.8 billion based on its share price at the close of trading on Friday.

Ma told The New York Times that he plans to step down from the company, referring to his retirement as “the beginning of an era” rather than an end.

After being knocked back by US venture capitalists in 1999, cash-strapped Chinese entrepreneur Ma persuaded friends to give him $60,000 to start an e-commerce firm called Alibaba.

As he prepares to leave the company, Ma is among China’s super rich. His net worth was estimated at $36.6 billion by Forbes.

Ma will turn 54 years old on Monday, the day he is retiring.

He gave up his university teaching job after discovering the internet.

Seeing an opportunity for small businesses to buy and sell their goods online, he started Alibaba, initially running the company out of his apartment in the eastern city of Hangzhou.

“The first time I used the internet, I touched on the keyboard and I find ‘well, this is something I believe, it is something that is going to change the world and change China,'” Ma once told CNN.

Ma has inspired strong devotion among his employees and users, drawing comparisons with late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs — although he practiced a more open management style.

A devotee of tai chi, he has made references to Chinese martial arts in both business strategy and corporate culture.

Porter Erisman, a former Alibaba employee who made a documentary about the firm, “Crocodile in the Yangtze,” said: “What Silicon Valley is known for, he embodies a lot of that with Chinese characteristics — that spirit of openness, risk-taking, innovation.”

Ma graduated from the Hangzhou Teachers College with a major in English-language education, and went on to teach at another university in the city, where Alibaba is still headquartered.

Chinese state media have burnished his rags-to-riches story, saying his parents were poorly educated and his father depended on a monthly retirement allowance of just $40 to support the family.

Ma’s success was evident after Alibaba’s Taobao bested eBay in China, forcing the US auction site to largely withdraw from the country in 2006.
