Gilgit-Baltistan’s First Waste Segregation Machine Delivered By Nestlé Pakistan For Smart Waste Management

Every year, over 2 million tourists visit Gilgit-Baltistan, making the region a popular attraction for local and foreign tourists while creating income for local communities. This has also become a reason for increasing waste in the region. Staying true to its vision for a waste-free future, Nestlé Pakistan recently delivered the first waste segregation machine in Gilgit, under its Clean Gilgit-Baltistan Project.

Chief Secretary Gilgit-Baltistan Abrar Ahmad Mirza inaugurates the machine to facilitate Gilgit-Baltistan Waste Management Company for smart waste management.

Inaugurated by Chief Secretary Gilgit-Baltistan Abrar Ahmad Mirza, the machine is situated in one of Gilgit-Baltistan Waste Management Company’s collection sites and will facilitate the sorting and segregation of different types of plastics and paper waste ushering in smart waste management in the region.

Acknowledging Nestlé’s contribution, Chief Secretary Gilgit-Baltistan Abrar Ahmad Mirza said, “We are delighted that Nestlé is making great efforts to reduce packaging waste in the region, and the progress of Clean Gilgit Baltistan Project is a testament in this regard.”

Earlier, as part of the CGBP program, Nestlé installed three compressing and baling machines, one each in Gilgit, Hunza and Skardu. The company also installed 122 benches and waste bins made of recycled plastic at popular tourist spots in the region and donated 15,000 reusable bags for distribution among the communities. In the last five year, these efforts culminated into waste management facilitation of over 6000 tons of plastic packaging in the region, making a positive environmental impact.

Highlighting Nestlé’s global vision, Sheikh Waqar Ahmad, Head of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability, Nestlé Pakistan said, “We are accelerating our actions to reduce the environmental impact of various kinds of packaging waste. Our vision is that none of our packaging, including plastics, ends up in landfill nor in oceans, lakes and rivers.”

“Tackling packaging waste requires a collective action of leveraging public private partnerships to find improved solutions to reduce, reuse and recycle,” he added.

Senior Minister Local Government & Rural Development Abdul Hameed, Minister for Planning & Development Raja Nasir Ali Khan, Commissioners of Gilgit & Hunza, and other senior government officials representing Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Gilgit-Baltistan Waste Management Company (GBWMC) were also present on the occasion.

Under the CGBP program, Nestlé Pakistan has committed donation of a Waste Segregation Machine for Skardu, installation of additional 100 benches in Gilgit-Baltistan region and launch of Waste Management trainings for hospitality sector in partnership with GBWMC and EPA among other activities in 2025.

Gilgit-Baltistan is major tourist destination in Pakistan, serving as a hub for trekking and mountaineering expeditions in the Karakoram mountain range.

This initiative marks Nestlé Pakistan’s efforts to reduce the environmental impact of packaging waste by improving its management and recycling, in line with UN Sustainable Development Goals 12 and 17 – Responsible Consumption & Production and Partnership for Goals.

Fakhar believes Pakistan should take a similar approach with Babar, instead of shaking his confidence by dropping him.

“It’s concerning to hear suggestions about dropping Babar Azam. India didn’t bench Virat Kohli during his rough stretch between 2020 and 2023,” Fakhar wrote. “If we are considering sidelining our premier batsman, it could send a deeply negative message across the team.”

PCB’s Response

However, the post did not sit well with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and they issued a show-cause notice to Fakhar Zaman. In response to the show-cause notice, Fakhar clarified that his remarks were out of respect for Babar and the team.

He reiterated that Babar, one of the best batters in the world, deserves the same kind of backing Kohli received from India. Fakhar’s argument wasn’t just about Babar’s performance; it was about the broader message this sends to the team.

During tough times, a player’s morale can take a hit, and it’s the team’s responsibility to lift them up, not push them down. “Babar Azam is one of the best batters in the world, and that’s why I felt compelled to express my opinion,” Fakhar clarified.

Swvl CEO Denies Consumer Business Shutdown Amid Strategic Shift

Dubai-based mobility company Swvl is supposedly retooling, however, its chief executive, Mostafa Kandil has flatly denied reports that the firm closed its consumer-facing business. Reports circulated after a LinkedIn post from MENAbytes reported that Swvl has “quietly shut down its consumer business to focus entirely on enterprise customers.” The post was directly responded to by Kandil who clarified that “We have not shut down consumer business.”

A New Direction for Swvl

While the consumer business might still be at least partially open, Swvl, by any measure, is moving focus toward B2B services. It shows that the firm has rolled out new branding and rebranded its website, which pitches Swvl as a company that offers “technology-driven mobility solutions for enterprises and governments.” The firm has been completely stripping its previous consumer options off its platform, from the “Daily” and “Travel” choices.

Today, Swvl is an enterprise-only services company that focuses on products such as SaaS and MaaS, directly providing services for companies, governments, and schools. It is quite likely that these will augment Swvl’s ability to win government contracts in Saudi Arabia, where it has been active for four years.

As the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 edges closer, the big question on everyone’s mind is: Will India actually play in Pakistan? Recently, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chief Richard Thompson and CEO Richard Gould weighed in on the situation.

He gave a clear message that India’s participation is crucial, not just for the competition, but for the sport’s financial health.

The India Factor: More Than Just a Game

“Cricket cannot afford to lose its broadcasting rights, and the Champions Trophy without India would not be in the best interest of the sport,” Thompson said bluntly. He stressed that without India, the tournament risks losing not only viewers but also serious broadcasting revenue.

In case India refuses to tour Pakistan due to ongoing political tensions, there’s talk of a hybrid model being used. This would allow India to play their matches outside of Pakistan. However, this plan isn’t final yet.

According to Thompson, the ultimate decision will be made by the incoming ICC CEO, Jay Shah, who also happens to be the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The Hybrid Model: A Possible Solution?

India could still participate in the Champions Trophy, but instead of playing in Pakistan, their matches would be hosted in a neutral venue, possibly the UAE or another nearby country. This would let India avoid traveling to Pakistan, while still being part of the tournament.

This isn’t a new idea. In fact, it’s similar to the arrangement for the 2023 Asia Cup, where some matches were played in Sri Lanka, allowing India to avoid touring Pakistan.

CEO Richard Gould backed this idea, acknowledging the complexity of the situation: “Whenever Pakistan and India play, security concerns in the region escalate, but the financial stakes for broadcasting rights are significant.” In other words, safety is always a concern, but the money involved makes it impossible to simply leave India out.

A Long History of Tensions

It’s no secret that India and Pakistan have a long and complicated political relationship, which often spills over into cricket. The Indian team hasn’t traveled to Pakistan since 2008, when they participated in the Asia Cup.

Since then, every time these two teams face off, it’s either at a neutral venue or in India. In contrast, Pakistan has made four trips to India in the last 16 years, with their most recent visit just last year for the ICC Men’s World Cup 2023.

Once again, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to shake things up in the selection committee. The seven-member committee has been trimmed down to just five. But that’s not the real game-changer here.

What’s caught everyone’s attention is the fact that the captain and head coach no longer have voting rights when it comes to picking the playing eleven.

The new selectors—Aaqib Javed, Aleem Dar, Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq, and Hassan Cheema—now hold all the cards. They’re the ones calling the shots on who makes it into the final XI.

While they’ll still talk to the captain and coach, these discussions are purely advisory. The power of decision-making lies solely with the selectors.

Why the Drastic Change?

The PCB seems to be looking for clarity and control, especially after the disappointing performance in the first Test at Multan. Pakistan faced a heavy defeat by an innings and 47 runs, and it looks like the PCB isn’t willing to take any more chances.
