Pakistan International Airlines has always been in the news for the wrong reasons.Recently the national carrier announced closing down of various international destinations including the iconic New York and Europe destinations.
The news was met with disappointment from people who used the service. PIA has been undergoing huge financial losses and the rapid decline has led to the closure of the foreign routes. However, this time around PIA is making the rounds on social media for their brave pilots who saved the lives of those on board flight, PK 536 on Monday.

Samsung HDTV Sales
Here are some of the best Black Friday Samsung HDTV sales you can take advantage of this week:
In past few years, Pakistani cinema has witnessed a massive resurgence, rising from the shadow of Bollywood movies and establishing its own identity.
This year, the entertainment industry welcomed winners like Punjab Nahi Jaungi and Na Maloom Afraad 2. The rest of the films failed to mint massive moolah at the box-office, receiving poor reviews from the critics and even failing to impress the picky Pakistani cinema-goers.
One might have expected Shoaib Mansoor’s ‘Verna’ to be even a bigger hit than PNJ and NMA 2. Sporting a mature theme based on women empowerment and starring the ever-popular and forever haseen- Mahira Khan, the flick was bound to be a blockbuster.
Prior to its release, Islamabad’s Censor Board barred it from screening in theaters, creating a massive social media brouhaha. #UnBanVerna started trending on Twitter and there was a huge outcry among women’s rights campaigners.
But who knew that Verna, challenging taboo and fighting rape, will fall flat on the box-office.
Box-Office Update
Numbers from boxofficedetail.com are out and we have analyzed that the movie had a poor opening on its Day 1 in cinemas. Its late release in Punjab and issues created by Censor Board hit Verna hard, resulting in a slow business on its debut day.
Verna Day 1 (Friday) = 68 lacs.
Since Saturday, the movie started picking pace all over Pakistan but still did not meet expectations, considering the name of Shoaib Mansoor and Mahira Khan attached to it
Verna day 2 (Saturday) = 1.12cr
Verna day 3 (Sunday)= 90lacs
Tota= 2.7cr
However, the daily business of Verna from Rawalpindi depict that it has defeated its rival Golmaal in the city.
Friday = 17.82lacs
Saturday = 22.95lacs
Sunday = 16.87lacs
Total= 57.64lacs
According to reports, Verna is performing poor overseas and numbers are yet to be released.
Reviews from Critics & Audience
Will take more than 72 hrs to rid of #Verna's symptoms from my system. Wud have been better had it not been released than scarring viewers for life. Still wondering what made ShoMan do it esp after the classic TV record he has had! @shafiqulhasan81@jawevuzuz@faysalquraishi
#verna excellent movie,if only they didn’t go overboard with the end, would have been better if the “KUTTA” was drowned in the lake as predicted by his peer sahab rather then revenge of Anarkali … that’s the only flaw for me in the movie ( Male lead was not up to the mark)
It seems Shoaib Mansoor spent all his time on the poster of Verna and how to make it eye-catchy; the director treated the film as the adopted son who in fact in the middle child.
The film that was supposed to become a blockbuster; that was supposed to make others understand the basics of filmmaking; that was supposed to show the world that Pakistani films are as good as any fell so badly on the ground that all the King’s horses and all the King’s men failed to collect the debris.
As Shoaib Mansoor’s biggest fan (fan for life, if I may write so myself) I was heartbroken for more than 72 hours since I didn’t expect Verna to be this bad or ShoMan to come up with such a bad product.
1) Pathetic Script
Kids say Ganday when they see something bad happening; Mahira’s character was not a kid so why was she saying it repeatedly. This is the quality of the script ShoMan came up with this time around where the screenplay was as weak as the husband played by Haroon Shahid on screen.
It is a social drama turned vengeful film where the plot makes you want to puke, where whatever happens off-screen jolts you from within and where the name of ShoMan isn’t enough to guarantee a good film.
Those days when a director didn’t share his work with others are long gone and had ShoMan shown his script to some film people, they would have advised him to take a break, breath in fresh air and start again.
2) Disturbing Dialogues
You men love just one area on a woman’s body … when you have to curse, you use words like Teri Maa Ki, Teri Behn Ki. Yes, that’s ShoMan’s writing and that left me disturbed for more than a couple of days.
Was he desperate to make a film that would do well at the box office so he can finance his next venture; was he molded to write such crap by the financers of the film who had no idea who he really was?
Where did the ‘Aagaya Hai Kyon Kakul Mere Jaisa Bloody Fool’ evaporate? Why did the man who immortalized ‘Moral Kaisa Hai, High Sir. Up to The … Sky, Sir’ stoop so low that it will take him an eternity to stand back on his feet. ‘Mujhe Do Aadmion Ne Kharab Kia Hai’ should have been ‘Mujhe Do Logon Ne’ and so forth.
ShoMan should either quit or apologize to his millions of fans around the world including this scribe who became a writer so that he can write about the Man who changed his life.
3) No Direction At All
The next time you watch a news channel, observe the movement of the tickers on the bottom of the screen. For Urdu, words move from left to right and for English, right to left. That’s an advice for one of the greatest director Pakistan has produced because he had no idea about the movement.
Then there was the plot that was seemingly inserted in the film to give the idea that there was a reason behind everything that happened.
You can find a stricter security protocol in a mall than it was given to the governor in the film; the poor attempt to make the audience vote for a party that has its head office in a house on a hill left the thinking audience thoughtless and the rest, soulless.
Shoaib Mansoor’s strong points have always been his script and direction and he falters in both, big time.
Sound Track, What Sound Track?
Khuda Kay Liye and Bol were the two films that must be credited as Pakistan’s first international films; Verna can be termed as the first Tele Film to be screened with so much fanfare (no one turned out to watch Ek Thi Mariyam, another Tele Film screened in the cinema last year).
Like a TV drama most of the scenes didn’t have anything in the background and when they did, it was not at all great.
Except for Zeb and Haroon’s songs, the rest were like novice attempts at singing – why ShoMan wanted Zain to say Ashko instead of Askhon is a mystery; had he given that much time to the script, the film might have turned out better than it actually did.
No Impact At All!
Shoaib Mansoor wanted Shehnaz Sheikh to be part of Unkahi when she said no. He approached her again and she demanded a fee that was unthinkable 35 years back. Shoaib Mansoor knew PTV will not agree so he agreed and the amount she demanded was the amount she got – ShoMan paid the extra money from his own pocket to get the actress he wanted.
That ShoMan is nowhere as he used a leading TV channel’s Court Reporter as head of a government agency (he looks shady enough) and a broadcast journalist as a psychiatrist for reasons better known to him.
Using non-actors in the film (in the roles of Mahira’s family and in-laws as well as the abductors, the governor, the ministers) cost him the impact he might have had with Verna.
The scenes in which Mahira Khan, Haroon Shahid, Zarrar Khan and even Fahad Ali Panni are in give the feeling of a film, by looking at the rest of the scenes you wonder if you are watching a B grade telefilm on a channel that no one knows exists.
In a modern day and era where you see women as competent an successful as men, there are still some who take the other gender very lightly. We have seen this occur time and time over again especially in advertising.
From tags and captions like “Look good is all you do” to “it’ll blow your mind away” women have been targeted over and over again and this time, Bata joined the bandwagon with their latest ad.
It comes to us as a surprise how a brand like Bata could have approved such an ad, but then again if other big names like Dove can make this mistake, others can too.
Joining him were Fifi Haroon and Meesha Shafi, thrashing the brand for taking ‘advertising’ to lowest possible level.
The apology is even sillier than the the picture! Your picture is not "inconvenient" its discriminatory & in totally bad taste! Your printers didnt make the booboo, YOU did. How about owning up #bata and just fire a few of the real decision makers in the process? pic.twitter.com/gDEOMQ3H5m

Instead of selling phones being manufactured in China and other countries, Pakistanis will finally be able to buy locally manufactured phones after 5 mobile companies have announced the set up of their assembly lines in Pakistan.
The foreign direct investment (FDI) is worth millions of dollars and will help in reducing the increasing growing import bill. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued guidelines for the assembly lines in the country in hopes of stepping up digitalization.
Speaking about the growing market an official from the PTA says,
“Mobile phone users in Pakistan are fast shifting to hi-tech products, of the 24 million mobile sets being imported in a year, almost half are smartphones.”
The 5 Cell-Phone Brands to Begin Manufacturing in Pakistan
Haier
G5
3. Jio Phone
4. Mobo Mobiles
5. Foxconn
The hub for mobile phone manufacturing since the past decade has been China. The main reason every brand has their assembly plants in China is due to cheap labor availability. However, the labor costs have now increased which have raised overall mobile phone prices across the world.
Samsung Mobiles have been approached by the government for an assembly plant in Pakistan however, an official has replied to the query via email,
“The government should frame a policy to provide incentives to the brands establishing assembly lines in Pakistan.”
Probably after the government frames a policy fit enough for Samsung, we may see the cell phone giant begin manufacturing in Pakistan which would slash prices as it manufacturing would be completed locally.
After the assembly plants come to Pakistan this would create a major boost in the economy and increased broadband adoption as more people would be able to afford the cell phones.
The PTA believes the companies will begin manufacturing in Pakistan soon, however, a specific date has not been set as yet.

The popular eatery, Nando’s is known for its witty ads based on the ongoing situation in the country, be it political or entertainment related, their comebacks are truly controversial just like their statements!
However, this time around a recent post by Nando’s has created an outrage on social media. It seems like people did not find it the least bit funny when Nandos decided to poke fun at the iconic Pakistani diva, Meeraji.
The post talks about the recent crooning session Meera had on a television show. She was seen singing her heart out on “My heart will go on” originally sung by the melodious Celine Dion for the legendary movie Titanic.
Nandos mentions in their post addressed to the veteran Lollywood actress,
“Meera Jee, please leave the crowing to our chickens!”
The text is pasted over a scene similar to the Titanic signifying the famous singing session Meera had just a few days ago that had created a buzz on social media.
Almost everyone criticised this post by the popular eatery, while some spoke about the missing ethics, others believed it was downright rude to take a dig at Meera on her singing!
Armeena Rana Khan was the only celebrity who stood up for Meera and slammed Nando’s for its savage post!

The Pakistani national carrier, PIA has been in the news recently trying to cut off its loss-making divisions such as closing down some popular international routes in order to make the airline financially stable again.
However, the next step it has decided to take is to sell off some of its critical assets like the ‘Roosevelt Hotel’ to gain financial stability. The hotel is situated in the heart of Midtown Manhattan on Madison Avenue. The hotel has 1,015 rooms, including 52 suites; some of the suites are among the most luxurious in Manhattan. Last year, the hotel was valued at a whopping $1 billion.
The current debts of PIA which contribute to 1.5% of the country’s GDP have now amounted to a total of Rs. 352 billion putting a stop to various operations and services. A business plan has been presented to the federal government by Dr. Musharraf Rasool Cyan, the CEO of PIA.
The plan suggests that the government pick up debt servicing cost of Rs. 59.3 billion for 2018 and Rs. 49.9 billion for 2019. The CEO has mentioned that these debts will allow the entity to make improvements in the next two years.
PIA has mentioned in the report that they would bear the debt-servicing cost for the year 2020, 2021 and 2022 without external support. Mr. Cyan also spoke about PIA’s fleet increasing from 36 to 44 by 2022, however, they will terminate 5 ATR aircrafts by the year 2022.
The closing down of various departments in PIA will not only result in unemployment as PIA has a vast number of people on their payroll but passengers would no longer be able to haul direct flights to international destinations which other domestic airline companies do not offer at the moment.
Shoaib Mansoor’s latest feature film Verna is all set to be released today after the Appellate Tribunal viewed and approved it and passed it without any cuts and mutes.
The film ran into trouble with the CBFC (Central Board for Film Certification) earlier this week when it was deemed ‘too bold’ for the audience.
The Censor folks in Islamabad recommended a few cuts and mutes which were rejected by the director Shoaib Mansoor who already has Khuda Key Liye and Bol to his credit.
A post shared by The Zone Pakistan🔹 (@thezonepakistan) on
The film which didn’t have many issues with the Censor people in Sindh will be previewed by Censor Board in Lahore later in the day, hopefully paving way for a release in the largest province of Pakistan.
It is to be noted that Verna has already been cleared for viewing internationally where it will be opening to the audience from today.
A post shared by M5MediaMag By Mahin Noor (@m5mediabug) on
Verna stars Mahira Khan and Haroon Shahid as the lead couple who drift apart after a horrific incident that threatens to tear them and their families apart.
The Censor people in Islamabad had issues with the ‘politically correct’ storyline where the son of a Governor is shown to be the main antagonist.
The stellar drama, Baaghi, continues to create enthusiasm and excitement amongst the audience as Kanwal Baloch, played by the striking Saba Qamar, she strives to rebel against the social media chaos created by Salman Ali who took advantage of Kanwal’s clip just to increase his show’s rating.
The episode opens up to Kanwal calling her family for the first time after she fled from her village. Upon inquiring, she gets to know from her sister that her family is facing a tough time ever since she has left, to which Kanwal promises that she will send money to support her family.
Despite Rehan telling Kanwal to not send money to her family as she hardly manages her own expenses, the head-strong girl decides to money-order Rs. 15,000 to them.
On the contrary, Abid is having a fancy time with another girl. Upon giving less monthly expense to his mother, Ruby exposes her husband’s affair with other women on whom he spends enormous amounts and woos them by giving free goods.
Coming back to Ms. Baloch, she continues posting her videos and “Girl power” statuses on her social media page. A number of people support her while, simultaneously, a large number of people backlashed her, but this did not stop the insurge.
Saba stole the show with her dialogue,
“agar zindagi main khush rehna hai to khud-gharz aur munaafik ho jao”
The story takes a new exhilarating turn when Kanwal reaches the post-office and is filling a form, and accidentally leaves the envelope containing money in a register on the inquiry counter. The “angel-dressed-as-a-man”, Shehryaar, played by the da[[er Osman Khalid Butt, comes to the rescue where he pitches in his own money for Kanwal.
While the unfortunate star was working hard to find a grade A opportunity to start her modeling career, her lucky strikes when a businessman watches her bizarre singing audition and calls Gohar to appoint Kanwal as a model for an international brand based in Dubai.
Towards the end of the episode, we witness Shehryaar’s mom speaking words of sympathy for Kanwal over her audition’s video. Upon watching the video, he starts pondering upon the whole situation and starts wondering if Kanwal is actually innocent or all of it was a publicity stunt.
In the end, Kanwal again posts a video on social media and gives “An open challenge” to the judges of the reality show that she will prove them wrong and will show everyone that she can sing really well.
The ups and down and switching between various emotions were quite evident during the episode. No doubt, Saba has been a crowd-puller throughout the drama and has awed the viewers with her super-real acting and jaw-dropping dialogues.
To see what else happened during the episode, watch Baaghi here:
The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has spoken up and finally taken action against the encroachments established by the five-star hotel, Marriott Hotel in Islamabad and has also sealed 9 other high-rise buildings in the city.
The CDA targeted the encroachments by the hotel on a plot which measures 3.75 acres of land. The plot which was taken over by Marriott is public property and such construction on it is illegal. The area occupied by Marriott was being used for ‘security’ purposes even though it is state owned.
The operation was conducted in the presence of the Assistant Commissioner ICT, the Islamabad Police was also present in order to deal with any situation that could occur. A bulldozer was brought in yesterday to remove the encroachments surrounding the Marriot Hotel situated in the Red Zone.
The bulldozer demolished two permanent sheds that were constructed illegally at the entrance, two huge temporary sheds, two security cabins and barrier posts and poles. All the construction removed were allegedly on an illegal property.
A video showing the CDA demolition of the Marriott walls and other illegal construction has been making the rounds on social media.

Seems like the business of fake degrees is in full spring in Pakistan. According to latest updates, a college in Islamabad has kickstarted trading of counterfeit degrees and its something all academic authorities, students and even parents should be aware of!
HEC Exposed Islamabad Law College
The head of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad exposed Islamabad Law College of giving fake degrees to the students.
The matter was addressed in a meeting of Senate Standing Committee on Federal Education and Professional Training, held under the chairmanship of Senator Rahila Magsi. The aim was to find a solution to the college’s affiliation with Islamia University Bahawalpur.
A case was brought in front of the panel in which the student of Islamabad Law College, Muhammad Akmal, told the committee that back in 2015 he took admission in the college and paid Rs 60,000 as a fee.
Apparently, he was told by the college that the institution is affiliated with Islamia University Bahawalpur.
After appearing in examinations of part 1, Akmal was informed that Islamia University had ended its affiliation with the Law College.
The HEC Chairman has issued a warning to the college and has allotted a target of months to the college authorities to resolve affiliation issues.
What is more, the chairman informed the Senate that all those students who are unable to bribe well-reputed institutions then opt for fake degrees form Islamabad Law College and various other illegal institutes.
It is crucial that relevant authorities take strict measures against these corrupt practices prevailing in the education sector and nip the evil in the bud.
