Bank Alfalah Announces Major Organisational Restructuring

Major changes are underway at Bank Alfalah as it has announced a major restructuring of the management team. As reported by the business recorder,  a massive number of people from the management team have decided to leave the bank, making a huge shuffle in resources.

The following are those who have left the management team at Bank Alfalah:

  1. Faisal Farooq Khan, Group Head HR & Learning and Corporate Services
  2. Mirza Zafar Baig, Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
  3. Khurram Hussain, Group Head RMM North, Central, and Consumer Finance
  4. Aly Mustansir, Chief Marketing Officer (CMO)
  5. Imran Zafar, Group Head Merchant Banking
  6. Saadur Rehman Khan, Group Head CIBG & International Business

The bank has appointed Nauman Ansari as the President and CEO to replace Atif Bajwa who was the President and CEO for over five years and has resigned due to personal reasons.

According to the memo, after serving for six years, Faisal Farooq Khan, Group Head HR & Learning, and Corporate Services will be leaving on November 17, 2017. Bank Alfalah has not announced his replacement as yet but the GM is now going to report to Khawaja Muhammad Ahmed Group Head Operations.

The CFO will also leave on the 17th of November and Amin Sukhiani will be replacing him as the acting CFO. Khurram Hussain Group RMM North will be leaving at the end of November while the CMO, Aly Mustansir is leaving by December 10, 2017.

The President, Ansari mentioned in an inter-company memo,

“The bank’s Q3 2017 accounts are testament of performance, but to maintain momentum, we must accelerate the transformation of our business and make sure that we have the right organizational structure in place to strengthen our connections with growing universe of customers and business partners.”

Mehreen Ahmed will now be looking after the entire retail banking group, Consumer Finance, SME, Bancassurance, Bank at Work, Products and Customer Experience.

The new structure will see the marketing functions become part of the retail banking group and report to Mehreen Ahmed. The Group Head, CIBG and International Business has decided to leave Bank Alfalah from November 10 and Fakhar Ahmed will hold the office as the interim.

Nauman Ansari has announced a town hall meeting in order to answer the questions raised due to the current restructuring at Bank Alfalah.

Karachi To Receive 2,000 Eco-Buses Under $600 Million Project!

Ever since the establishment of CPEC, China has been of great help to Pakistan, both economically and environmentally.

Many power and infrastructure projects have been introduced in the country under the $62 billion agreement.

This year, in Karachi, many new transportation projects have been announced by the local government, namely the Yellow Line Bus Rapid Transit. Now, a Chinese company is willing to introduce electrical buses for the metropolis which shall facilitate the transportation means of the city.

The Chinese company, Eco-Bus, is offering electrical buses worth $600 million which would run on electrical batteries and would not produce smoke or noise hence improving the environmental standards of the MEGA-CITY.

A delegation of 6-people led by Thomas Wang met Waseem Akhter, the Mayor of Karachi, where they discussed the benefits of this project.

This joint venture encompasses 500 stations, which would produce new job opportunities. In these stations, the buses could come, get recharged, and then once again run for 280 kilometres.

Two new electrical buses are expected to arrive in Karachi within next two months which would evaluate and examine the performance of this vehicle on the roads of this city.

These Eco-friendly buses are providing a great opportunity for Pakistan to move towards renewable energy resources and advancement in technology.

Minsk Motorcycle & Bike Plant Signs Contracts with Pakistan

Minsk Motor Plant (MMZ trademark) has signed 3 big contracts with Pakistan.

“We welcome a positive momentum in our trade and economic relations with Pakistani companies, which enables us to bring the cooperation to a new level,” MMZ noted.

The Q3 2017 was an especially successful period of cooperation from international manufacturers who have shown immense interest in investment in the automotive sector of the auto industry.

Credits go to the well-crafted foreign economic policy. According to the agreements, with Imperial Auto Store and M.S. Enterprises, MMZ is to supply spare parts for diesel engines.

In line with a deal worth over $138,000 with Pakistan’s Amwar Agencies, Minsk Motor Plant shall sell a batch of spare parts and D-244 diesel engines. MMZ also supplies these engines to Minsk Tractor Works as components for agricultural vehicles sold to Pakistan.

MMZ shall also supply engines and spare parts to Pakistan which then will be used to repair tractors operating in the country’s agriculture sector.

“MMZ is stepping up the effort to promote cooperation with the Pakistani companies, considering finance-related matters, and working individually with other Pakistani partner companies,” MMZ added.

Standard Chartered inaugurates Diabetic Retinopathy Ward at Al-Ibrahim Eye Hospital

As part of the Seeing is Believing programme, Standard Chartered Bank recently inaugurated a Diabetic Retinopathy ward at Al-Ibrahim Eye Hospital Karachi.

The ward was inaugurated by Shazad Dada, Chief Executive Officer, Standard Chartered Pakistan.

Dr. Saleh Memon, who is a respected authority on eye health made a brief presentation on the progress of the project for the team.

Munazza Gillani, the Country Director Sight Savers International acknowledged the Standard Chartered partnership and lauded their contribution to eye health in Pakistan.

This ward is part of Seeing is Believing Phase 5 project. Under this project, the Bank will be investing $1million USD across 3 districts (Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi) within five years, to treat men and women who are known diabetics, for Sight-Threatening Diabetic Retinopathy (STDR).

It is estimated that the new programme will reach out to approximately 1million direct and indirect beneficiaries.

Commenting on the occasion Mr. Shazad Dada, Chief Executive Officer, Standard Chartered Pakistan, said: “Standard Chartered is making a difference in Pakistan through its avoidable blindness programme Seeing is Believing. I am proud that approximately 20percent of reduction in blindness is attributed through programmes which are supported by our Bank. This Seeing is Believing Phase 5 project will ensure that men and women who are diabetic are treated through early detection to prevent visual impairment.”

Standard Chartered Pakistan has led various Seeing is Believing initiatives in Pakistan for over 11 years, touching close to 11million lives.

As a result of the commitment and focus in this area, the Bank of Pakistan is the only corporate to be part of a policy-making government committee for Eye Health in Pakistan.

Dubai Residency Visa: All You Need to Know

A vast number of Pakistanis have been working in the UAE for decades, almost a majority of these people have left behind families, including parents, their wife, and children that they only meet a couple of times during the year.

The reason for leaving behind families in the home country is the expenses related to sponsoring the family to live in the UAE.

Requirements for a Residence Visa in the UAE:

  1. Monthly Salary of a person working in the UAE should be between Dh 3000- 4000 Plus Accommodation for sponsoring wife and children
  2. A monthly salary of Dh 20,000 is required for sponsoring parents with accommodation
  3. An entry residence visa is required first.
  4. A typed application form
  5. Salary certificate
  6. Labour card and contract
  7. Attested marriage certificate
  8. Attested birth certificate of children
  9. Bank statement for 3 months
  10. Attested tenancy contract
  11. Emirates Identity Card
  12. Valid medical insurance policy for parents with minimum coverage of Dh 600
  13. Expat has to show valid proof that they are the sole provider for the parents
  14. For the parents’ residence visa, a two-bedroom accommodation is required and a DEWA bill will have to be submitted

For Pakistanis, it is important to remember to get the marriage certificate attested by the relevant ministry and also stamped and attested by the UAE consulate in Pakistan. Finally, it also needs to be cross attested by the relevant ministry in the UAE.

Shehzad Roy Appointed as National Goodwill Ambassador for United Nations

Pakistani singer and social activist, Shehzad Roy, has been designated as an official National Goodwill Ambassador for United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

Yury Fedotov, UNODC Executive Director, congratulated and appreciated the veteran singer and social worker by saying;

“Throughout his career as a singer, social worker and a humanitarian, Mr. Roy has shown an unwavering commitment to tackling illicit drugs.”

He added:

“His position as one of Pakistan’s most famous singers, his enduring popularity with young people, and his energy and undoubted talent, will help UNODC publicize the dangers of drug abuse.”

All honoured, Shehzad expressed his gratitude by tweeting:

Shehzad Roy has previously received the Sitara-e-Imtiaz in 2005, a civil honour, for his efforts in the public service sector. He was also honoured with the ‘Sitara-e-Eisaar’ in 2006 for his NGO’s work for the rehabilitation of the victims of the 2005 Kashmir earthquake.

The singer spoke on this occasion:

“I have been following UNODC’s work even before joining them as a Goodwill Ambassador. Their work is commendable in the fields of criminal justice, drug demand reduction and HIV/AIDS prevention. These things are close to my heart especially when children are concerned, and I will give my all to my new role as National Goodwill Ambassador for Pakistan.”

He has been appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador for 2 years. During his tenure, Shehzad will work on various UNODC goals including criminal justice and drug demand reduction.

Roy said:

“It is disheartening to see children imprisoned for petty crimes or drugs ruining the lives of young people. If I can help one child out of prison or convince just one boy or girl to turn away from drugs, I feel proud that I have made a difference.”

Many celebrities and social workers came forward to congratulate Shehzad Roy on this achievement.

Toxic Smog Returns to Lahore!

An intense fog has engulfed Lahore, affecting breathing and visibility, forcing the residents of Lahore to stay at home.

However, the smog is man-made, a mixture of smoke & fog, created by nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and other aerosols. It is highly toxic and can be extremely harmful to the lungs, eyes and the nose.

According to the MET Office, shallow foggy and misty weather conditions are expected in plain areas of Punjab and upper Sindh during morning hours.

Over the past years, a thick smog descends in Lahore every December. However, the situation has aggravated over the past 5 years owing to poor quality of air and increasing pollution. Deforestation and rapid industrialization are one of the vital causes.

The adverse climate is causing is proving to be quite detrimental to health, resulting in breathing difficulties and irritation in eyes for residents.

Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy Films’ Website Hacked; Hacker Leaves Funny Message

Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy has been the talk of social media lately and somehow has turned into a major controversy.

Obaid’s sister received an unwanted friendship request from her doctor who worked at Agha Khan University Hospital (AKUH).

However, the fire actually started when she used the term ‘harassment’ to describe the situation at hand. Many bashed her for the choice of vocabulary clarifying that sending a friendship request is unprofessional however you cannot call it harassment!

That’s not all, apparently, after this controversy stirred, Sharmeen’s website SOC Films got hacked by someone who definitely is not a fan of hers, going by the name of Fahim Magsi, who had a very funny message for her.

Geo Khelo Pakistan Comes to an End!

Earlier this Ramadan, Wasim Akram and Shoaib Akhtar created a frenzy in Pakistan’s entertainment scene by uniting for a game show ‘Geo Khelo Pakistan’ on Geo Entertainment.

While previously, Wasim Akram had hosted a couple of talk shows, it was for the first Shoaib Akhtar hosted a program, that too a game show.

Together, the dynamic duo strived hard to match the level of Fahad Mustafa and Aamir Liaquat. While they did not garner as much fan base as their rivals, the pair did get popular for their funny skits and the audience loved them in avatar never-seen-before.

Umrah Pilgrims New Visa Law for Pakistanis Introduced by Saudi Arabian Government

As winter months approach, pilgrims traveling for the holy ritual of Umrah have begun preparations. However, there is a change in travel policies this year for Pakistani pilgrims. They will now need to get biometric verification before applying for the visa.

This new requirement will cost Pakistani pilgrims traveling for Umrah approximately PKR 1,040 Million each year. Due to this exorbitant amount, the Travel Agents Association of Pakistan (TAAP) staged a protest outside the Lahore Press Club on Monday to put an end to this tedious process.

According to the TAAP, the decision will not only double the miseries of the pilgrims but also put the personal and national data of the pilgrims at stake. The TAAP is urging travel agents to stop applying for the Umrah visa for a period of one month, this will in turn cause the Saudi government to change its decision.

As per ProPakistani, the Chairman Travel Agents Association Pakistan (TAAP) Muhammad Yahya Polani spoke on the on-going issue,

“KSA should review this policy. Pakistani pilgrims are mostly living in remote areas of the country and this will cause them additional hassle. Pilgrims have to wait for hours for this process”

The visa law has been put into effect from yesterday by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Every pilgrim will require a biometric registration before applying for a visa. Saudi authorities have now partnered with Etimad to implement this new law in Pakistan.

TAAP statistics show that last year 1.5 million pilgrims visited Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah from Pakistan while 185,000 performed Hajj.

If you thought your internet was safe on the web, well, its time to re-think about that!

Completely Automated Public Turing Test To Tell Computers and Humans Apart (CAPTCHA) codes are a common practice used by many websites and companies to keep information safe so that no virus or malware can access confidential data.

However, an AI just proved even CAPTCHA cannot keep your data safe if it’s online! Scientists at Vicarious AI, a California-based start-up, have built a robot that cracks the CAPTCHA codes faster than anything built before. The AI can successfully mimic the human-eye making the codes vulnerable in front of it.

The AI, named RCN, collects information like the edge of texts and their representation to draw an overall picture. Co-founder Vicarious Dileep George has said;

“We can’t even get any machine to recognize all the forms of just the letter A yet. Computers have to deal with missing and uncertain information, clutter and noise.”

This is a huge achievement for technology, however, it is also a concern for the rest of us as if this AI technology is in possession of hackers then it can be used to extract sensitive information including bank account details and more.

Looks like Skynet is one step closer to taking over the web!

 

PIA’s Last Flight to New York Today!

Pakistan International Airline (PIA) has forever been in hot water. The nation’s aviation service always makes it to the news for all the wrong reasons and it seems, today is yet another unfateful day for the brand.

Farwell to U.S.A Flights

According to latest reports, PIA has brand has decided to cease flights to the United States from 28th December.

The reason is the surge in losses over the past few months and the airline is no longer booking US flights through its reservation system.

According to the media reports, PIA, after stopping direct flights to the US, will enter into a code-sharing agreement with an American airline. US-bound passengers will be flown to London, where they will then be transferred to the American airline which will take them to the US.

Dawn news revealed that nearly 500,000 Pakistanis live in the US and the aviation service has never ceased its services for that country since it launched the operation there in 1961.

Coincidently, Air Blue now is starting direct flights to New York!

PIA in Massive Loss!

According to latest reports, PIA is facing a loss worth 4 Billion. The country’s flagship carrier is akin to a sinking Titanic with no superhero to save it.

Advisor to Prime Minister on Aviation, Sardar Mehtab Abbasi told Geo News:

Neither the government nor the airline’s management or its employees are ready to own it.

However, he believes that the airline has a lot of potentials to recover itself and rise from the ashes all over again.

“There is a lot of talent, a lot of potential, if they [PIA] utilise their potential to the maximum then things can change”

Surplus staff to Fired

What is worse, PIA is expected to cut more than 500 jobs under the latest plan. This surely showcases PIA’s sorry state of affairs.

Fashion Designer Deepak Perwani Denies Joining MQM!

UPDATE: The personification of class, the style maverick and the connoisseur of Pakistani fashion: Deepak Perwani has undeniably created a timeless legacy in fashion with his successful sartorial endeavors.

The whole of Pakistan was shocked when the leading designer showed interest in affairs of state and joining a party to start a career in politics!

But according to the latest update, Perwani has made it clear that he has NOT joined MQM and wished Farooq Sattar all the best for his future endeavors

As a citizen of Karachi, I recognize the importance and relevance of the political landscape and the very vital contribution of the mqm . During my 25 years of career as a fashion designer I have been apolitical and Karachi has been central to my growth sustenance and pride . I have great respect and regard for Dr farooq Sattar . I would like to make it very clear that I have not formally joined any party but will always support causes and charities that will benefit my city and my country. I thank Dr Sattar and wish him and the party every success.

Earlier, according to various reports, Deepak had announced his shocking association with  Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM).

Farooq Sattar had welcomed the fashion guru along with a dozen other people have recently joined the party and all were welcomed to the club in a grand press conference.

Other members included:

  2. trader Khurram Rasool
  3. Saman Laiq Abbasi
  4. former PTI leader Farooq Dadi
  5. Alamgir Feroz,
  6. Taufeeq Kochin

Introducing the new members, MQM-P chief Dr. Farooq Sattar had said:

“These individuals have their own standing in the fields of fine arts, fashion and civil services”

“We will utilise their services in different domains of the party and have them help train our workers.”

Earlier, speaking to media, Deepak Perwani seemed pretty confident about his new affiliation with the political party.

Twitter can not help trolling Perwani over his change of mind!

Well, trolls are certainly having a field day now that he is NOT a part of MQM!

Sindh Building Control Authority to Demolish 19 Illegal Societies

Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has announced to demolish 19 illegal societies.

The authority posted this news on their Facebook page mentioning the names of the illegal societies and the soon they will be demolishing them.

The page further mentions their booking offices and constructions will also be taken care of in the process.

Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy Breaks Silence on AKUH Doctor Controversy!

Over the weekend, Pakistan went through a mighty social media brouhaha over Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy and the fired doctor controversy.

The revered documentarian found herself in the eye of a storm over a crucial matter that had Pakistan divided.

Her aggressive tweets about an AKU doctor harassing her sister created an explosion, stirring an aggressive debate on the patient-doctor relationship.

People claimed that she has used the word ‘Harassment’ a little too carelessly.

 

The issue ballooned up to create a massive chaos!

 

However, it was not just Sharmeen who received backlash on the matter! Apparently, AKU’s name was dragged through the mud and a movement called #bringthedoctorback started trending on the internet. To save the situation, the hospital rolled out a statement to clarify the matter but it really aggravated the whole situation even more.

Meanwhile, some people came up with various revelations on social media that the doctor was already under scrutiny for various other cases of harassment.

Sharmeen has finally Responded to all the backlash!

It was about time the documentarian finally break the silence and clarify things on her end. In a long note, Obaid did not shy away from accepting that her choice of words exaggerated the matter. However, her intentions were clear and feeling vulnerable, she was compelled to lodge a complaint against the doctor.

But she added that she has no responsibility what so ever for the decision taken by AKUH. What is more, Obaid claimed she will not remain hushed on a matter that will involve a breach of trust and privacy.
