Awami Sawari: A New Ride-Hailer In Town

A new ride-hailing application has just hit the market. The newly launched “Awami Sawari” is trying to mark its spot in the highly competitive world where Uber and Careem which have become the popular method of transportation nowadays.

The service, Awami Sawari, has been launched by the Awami Rickshaw Union (ARU), and its direct competitors are Careem’s Tez Rickshaw and UberAuto, which have perfectly captured the market.

The ARU stated that ever since the launch of these taxi-hailing services, the business of auto-rickshaw drivers has been greatly affected, therefore they decided to launch their own app. About 30%-40% business has been affected by each rickshaw driver.

ARU President, Majeed Ghauri, said that 500 rickshaw drivers have registered with the application. The union is providing rickshaw drivers with Android smartphones too, to make this venture successful. The rickshaw drivers are now asking their passengers to install the application and call a rickshaw at their doorstep anywhere and anytime.

Another incentive given to the rickshaw drivers is that Awami Sawari will take 20% commission from Rickshaw drivers and will reward Rs.4000 per week to Rickshaw drivers on completing 60 rides per week.

Majeed also enhanced on the fact that this is solely a local project initiated by a local union, and no foreign investment is involved in it. The base tariff for Awami Sawari is Rs.48 and the cost per kilometer is Rs. 9.

He further added:

Some of our friends, who have a tech background, helped us in developing the mobile application platform for rickshaw drivers and commuters. The application has been tested among a select group of users and all bugs have been fixed before the launch.

We are not against multinational ride-hailing services operating in different cities but we are against the uneven playing field. The rickshaw drivers are paying for vehicle fitness certificates, traffic police challans, the fines imposed by the environment department and several other such taxes and penalties, while these ride-hailing services are snatching passengers from rickshaw drivers.

Respecting this view, the new ride-hailing app will face a lot of competition from the current market leaders, yet the chances are that we might see more innovation in these services.

CSS Examination Policy Revised

css exams

Good news for CSS students. To reduce the pressure on the students appearing for Central Superior Services (CCS) exam, Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) has decided to relax its policies.

CSS Examination Policy Re-evaluated!

Now only one CSS exam will be conducted in a day, unlike the old rule in which two exams were taken in a single day.

The FPSC took this decision after considering the low passing rate of the CSS exams at a meeting where the federal cabinet is scheduled to take up the proposed restructuring of the commission.

Moreover, the resolution suggested that the commission will aggregate the marks for English essay and précis/composition from now on.

Besides, the FPSC is also preparing a briefing for the federal cabinet government bureau which shall consist of proposals for restructuring the reforms in the commission any time soon.

“The cabinet was scheduled to take up the agenda earlier this week, but due to unidentified reasons it was pulled out at the eleventh hour,” said an FPSC official who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The results of CSS have declined from 9.75% in 2011 to 2.09% in 2016.

The commission is also going to propose changes in the educational programs of colleges which are one of the proposals of the commission.

Meanwhile, the FPSC chairperson, in a report submitted to President Mamnoon Hussain in August, also highlighted the issues causing the low passing rate in the exam. He suggested ways how the result could be improved.

He said one of the major problems for the commission was finding the right officers for the right group due to the “declining education standards caused by sub-standard schooling, particularly in rural areas.”

Pakistani Visa Service to Britain Awarded to Company With No Experience

The visa facilitation service contract from Britain to Pakistan has been awarded to Sentinel Group Securities by the Pakistan High Commission. The news comes as a surprise as the Sentinel Group does not have previous relevant experience in this field.

The three companies were shortlisted for the bid were:

  • TCS Express Worldwide
  • Gerry’s Offshore
  • Sentinel Group Securities

Sentinel Group has been a security service provider in the past as per the information on the website however, it does not have experience on visa handling and providing efficient visa customer services as the other two bidding companies. Gerry’s is the current service provider for the Pakistani High Commission in the UK for the last five years while TCS has been in the industry, dealing with clients for decades.

The lowest financial bidder was Sentinel Group which was awarded the massive visa facilitation contract.

The PPRA has two main prerequisites required for companies to qualify for bidding, these are:

  1. The company must have adequate or relevant experience or be able to demonstrate the capability to provide the requisite services.
  2. Must possess necessary experience and capacity to handle a large number of visa applications.

It must be mentioned here that Sentinel Group (SGS) does not meet the two key requirements that have been deemed necessary by the PPRA.

In a statement, Pakistan High Commission added on the matter,

“The Visa Facilitation Services Selection Committee of the High Commission opened the financial bids from the shortlisted companies for Visa Facilitation Services at the Chancery premises. In order to ensure transparency, all the bidders brought along their sealed bids, which were opened at 04:30 pm in their presence at the High Commission.”

The bidding process has finished and is following all legal formalities. The contract will be signed by the High Commission with the lowest bidder, SGS.

It still remains a mystery as to how Sentinel Group received the contract because it was previously mandatory for any firm taking part in the bidding to have a physical presence in the country in form of offices/interests, however, this requirement has been let go this time as well.

Mahira Khan Breaks Silence on Censor Board’s Objection on Verna

The news of the Mahira Khan’s upcoming movie ‘Verna’ probably being banned by Islamabad Censor Board has created a massive social media uproar.

The whole nation is questioning the decision taken by the Central Board of Film Certification and are curious to know why a film that addresses the issue of rape in Pakistan has been barred from a release.

Apparently, Verna has been deemed unfit for the audience cause of its bold dialogues and portrayal of public figures. The movie’s premiere in Lahore was scheduled today and now has been postponed after the Censor Board’s decision.

The film will be viewed by a full board, later in the day to decide whether to ban or allow it.

Verna: To Ban or Not to Ban?

People are taking to social media to protest about the development and are lashing out at the authorities on the verdict.

It is shocking that a movie addressing incredibly important social issues is being prevented from screening

Super Cinemas General Manager Khorem Gultasab too slammed the decision taken by Islamabad’s censor board.

Haroon Shahid, who is making his debut in the movie across MK, trolled Censor Board the like a boss!

And now Mahira Khan too has broken silence on the controversy & expressed her disappointment to a leading new channel.

The starlet has expressed hope that the ban will be lifted soon as there is no element in the movie that is unsuitable for screening in Pakistan.

Earlier, her Bollywood debut Raees featuring Shah Rukh too was restricted in cinemas of the state.

Meanwhile, there are some keyboard warriors who believe this is all a publicity stunt.

The mastermind behind Pakistani blockbusters, Khuda K Liye and Bol Shoaib Mansoor is making his cinematic comeback with Verna.

The maestro can easily be credited for the revival of Pakistani cinema. If it gets the censor,  Verna is bound to be yet another potential blockbuster, written and directed by the Showman himself.

“This film has been Written and Directed by a man of Pakistan for the men of the world to listen to women. It is to encourage women to speak up … Khuda ke liye bol verna…..”, divulged Shoaib Mansoor.

PSL 3 2018: Reasons Why Chris Gayle is Missing in Action!

Remember the West Indies version of Shahid Afridi? The massive sixes, the energy that would charge everyone on the field, the cheering of the entire stadium because that one man walked on to the field with his might bat? Remember Chris Gayle?

Well, the cricket superstar was a part of PSL season 1 and 2 but, he seems to be missing from season 3! This year no franchise picked Chris Gayle, and as much as it might hit you as a surprise, there are a couple of explanations for this!

PSL 3 Players Draft 2017: Complete Player’s List

1. Leave PSL 3 Mid-Way

Well, if Chris Gayle had been selected in any of the 6 franchises, he would have only been a part of a couple of matches, and most probably would not have been a part of the final matches, including the finale in Karachi.

The reason being is that West Indies is to play their qualifying match for the World Cup in the upcoming months, for which Gayle needs to be back home practicing to take the cup home.

2. Performance in PSL Seasons 1 & 2

We all know that when it comes to performing, Gayle and Afridi and on the same side of the court. There are days where they will leave you ecstatic, craving for more action, and then there are days where ducks seem to be a normal thing for them.

Same thing happened with Gayle in the last 2 seasons of Pakistan Super League. When he played for Lahore Qalanders in season 1, he secured a total of 13 runs in 5 matches, whereas he was only able to make just 160 in 9 matches in season 2.

Pakistani Cricketers & Their Salaries in the Last 4 Years!

3. Performing Better in IPL Over PSL

Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the direct competitors PSL has in cricket. If we compare his performance in PSL (given above) to his performances in IPL, we can see that there is no ‘wow factor’, however, the stats are comparatively better.

In fact, Gayle was able to secure more runs in the previous year compared to his stats in 2017. He secured 200 runs in 9 matches in IPL 2017, whereas he managed to gain 227 runs in IPL 2016, showing a deterioration in his performance over the last year.

Pakistanis in Denmark Allowed to Hold Dual Nationality!

It is estimated by the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development that approximately 7.6 Million Pakistanis are living abroad. A majority of this number is residing in the Middle East and Europe.

For most countries, Pakistan does not allow citizens to hold dual nationalities except for a number of nations across the world. Out of the list, Pakistanis settled in Denmark can now hold a dual nationality as announced on Saturday by the Interior ministry in a notice.

As per the Ministry, there are 30,000 Pakistanis living in Denmark at the moment but have not been allowed to hold a dual nationality due to regulations. The notice further reads,

“Thirty thousand Pakistanis living in Denmark would benefit from the arrangement and be able to hold Danish nationality without renouncing the Pakistani nationality. More than 5,000 Pakistanis settled in Denmark visit Pakistan every year.”

Here’s the complete notice issued by the Government of Pakistan Ministry of Interior:

Courtesy: Express Tribune

The ongoing dual nationality matter had been pending with the federal government for years and the delay had created difficulties for the Pakistanis living amongst the Danish.

Denmark is marked as the 19th country to have a treaty of a dual nationality with Pakistan.
The Danish government has approved it from its parliament and allowed Pakistanis to hold a dual nationality after the Pakistani envoy in Denmark lodged the matter with the Danish government earlier this month.
