Emily Ratajowski

Celebs normally stun in black but this gothic look is not working for Ratajowski at all.

Naomi Harris

Definitely too much color for the Cannes! The rainbow dress by Gucci was a miss and reminds us of our desi ‘gola-ganda’ dessert.

Robin Wright

Looks like the ‘House of Cards’ star forgot to change before getting out of bed. The skimpy emerald green gown surely resembles a nightgown. Paired with pink slippers this was a definite fashion fail!

Rihanna

The queen of controversial dressing, Rihanna’s black Ralph and Russo did not suit ‘bad girl riri’s’ eccentric style!

Its mere appearance awakens the spirit of discovery: This is where the stylistic features of an SUV concept meet the dynamics and athleticism of an urban lifestyle. With its high roofline, the body creates an especially generous sensation of spaciousness in the interior.

Optional xLine extras in sanitised Aluminium on the body reinforce the athletic look and the visual association with the X family.

They also give the front and rear their distinctive appearance. These characteristic features, which are also available in numerous exclusive paint finishes, additionally afford protection against chip damage during off-road excursions.

Aerodynamic excellence and the accompanying reduction in fuel consumption are guaranteed by details such as the side Air blades on the tailgate and the Air Curtain integrated into the air inlets at the front. It also features the Panorama Glass Roof which provides mesmerising views and allows a great deal of light into the interior, lending it a particularly spacious and open ambience.

Interior

The BMW X1 surprises with the familiar. This is made possible by the customary driver-orientated cockpit layout with its extremely innovative and sophisticated design elements. The sense of touch plays a key role here:

Exceptionally fine materials and top-class finishing impress from the very first contact. Ambient light that is perfectly adapted to the interior as well as a selection of materials such as leather, fine woods and aluminium impress with their distinct quality.

Even attention to the practical details is clearly apparent in the BMW X1: The generously designed centre console with closing roller covers cup holders and additional storage spaces offer freedom and underline the versatility of the interior.

This House of Clay & Water by Faiqa Mansab: A Bold Romantic Story Between a Woman & Hermaphrodite

This House of Clay and water

Of love, loss, and betrayal; the ground-breaking novel ‘This House of Clay and Water’ by Faiqa Mansab dares to tell a contemporary love story between a woman and hermaphrodite! The rising Pakistani writer is making lots of noise in the literary circuit for all the right reasons.

The novel has been published by Penguin Random House India this month. It’s tale of Begum ‘Nida’ and the beggar hermaphrodite tends to explore a relationship beyond the conventional with its much-taboo topic. However, it is one that will definitely raise interest and tempt many to pick it from the bookshelves later this May.

Brandsynario had the pleasure of enjoying a heart-to-heart with Faiqa Mansab. She opened to us about her visionary story and inspiration behind the novel.

Please tell us a bit about yourself

First of all, thank you so much for having me. Thrilled to be on this wonderful platform.
I’m an MPhil literature and an MFA creative writing graduate. I teach creative writing as well. My debut novel This House of Clay and Water is coming out in May with Penguin Random House. I’m super excited about that.

In This House of Clay & Water, did you create characters and events that are based on real stories or is the story purely fictional?

It’s definitely purely fictional. It’s set in Lahore and it is a love story. And yes, the story of love is as much about the city as the protagonists of the novel. The location is a political choice in writing and I didn’t just choose Lahore, I chose a very particular facet of The city. Most of the action takes place at the shrine of Data Sahib, and the story moves from Hijra chawls, to the political arena and the old city. Lahore has so many faces like any ancient city and Lahore is one of the oldest in the world. There are so many stories to tell. This is just the beginning.

What inspired you to create a romantic tale between a woman and hermaphrodite?

I believe characters tell their own stories and as a writer, I just have to listen. Initially, my hermaphrodite was going to be a spiritual guide to Nida, my female protagonist, but during my research on the subject, I came across the book Herculine Barbin by Michel Foucault. It’s based on the diaries of a young woman who later finds out that she is, in fact, a hermaphrodite. After reading Alexina’s account of her life and how difficult it was for her to accept that she wasn’t a girl, but a hermaphrodite, I was in a trance for days. It was a heart-wrenching account. She chose to become Herculine Barbin after having identified herself as a woman all her life. It was an act of extreme courage but also of despair. I just had a new image of Bhangi after that and he transformed into the character you see now in the novel. I think before he had been a very one-dimensional person, an idea of a hermaphrodite but after reading that book he became a person, who is confused and is replete with desires and fears like any normal human being. I think I grew up as a human being when I wrote this book.

In the recent past, there was that horrible story about an attack on hermaphrodite in Pakistan. What are your thoughts about that?

Aadmi ko bhi muyassar nahin insan hona We have forgotten how to be human in our quest to be Muslims. We have forgotten that being Muslim, Christian, Jew, Buddhist, Jain, Sikh, etcetera means being a good human being. If we are good people, if we treat others with kindness, then we are automatically good Muslim/just-fill-your-religion-here. Take away kindness from our choices and we are animals. Those people, who tortured and humiliated and murdered their fellow human beings because they were different, killed their own humanity.
We are afraid of difference, may it be gender, race or culture. Our fears and hate makes us bestial and removes us from the presence of God.

What kind of response do you hope readers have to your novel?

I hope that people will read it and then form their own opinion about it. I hope that they will see themselves in it and they will see people they recognize and can relate to, sympathize with. I hope they can laugh at the humor and appreciate the irony and tear up at the tragedy. I hope that will read it and think about themselves and the world we live in.

Can you tell us about your second novel?

I’m loving writing it. I’m enjoying it so much and I really hope I can finish it soon because I take really long to write the first drafts. I’m not disciplined enough. Sadly. But I’ll get there.

13 Reasons Why NOT to Watch 13 Reasons Why Season 2

13-reasons-why-season-2

Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why (Th1rteen R3asons Why) is a drama-mystery based on the 2007 novel ’13 Reasons Why’ by Jay Asher.

The series is about a teenager Hannah Baker who commits suicide and leaves a set of tapes behind, one for every reason why she did what she did.

13-Reasons-Why

Not only is the entire series extremely harsh on a child’s mind, there are several concepts left unclear or portrays it absolutely wrong. For those who have seen the first season, you know how it made you feel, all those hours of binge watching about someone who committed suicide tends to take its toll on you. For those who have not seen it, trust me when I say, you should keep it that way.

Unfortunately for me, I am one of the ones who did watch it. This is why it is important for you to know the 13 reasons why you shouldn’t watch ’13 Reasons Why’ Season 2.

1. Suicide is NOT Glorious

Hannah-Baker

Suicide is not something that should be going around with glory, it is a deadly serious topic, and it needs to be understood. Suicide is the ending of a human life, someone who was living, breathing, laughing, who was pink, and now they are not.

It is not something ‘cool’ it is a nightmare, a disaster which the individual leaves behind on their families, friends, those who loved them, a wound soo deep that it never heals. Even time does not heal these wounds, it only teaches them how to live with them.

2. Revenge is NOT the way to go

Alex-Standall

Hannah’s suicide is more like revenge, she left behind a lesson to teach. She was bullied, they were mean to her, she decided to end it all, take revenge, teach them a lesson by leaving traumatising tapes which have changed more than 13 lives, not to forget to make them feel guilty every day, for the rest of their lives, until they decide to end their life.

3. When it Comes to Bullying, Schools Turn a Blind-Eye?

We see and we hear over and over again that bullying has lead to suicide. Experiencing bullying is traumatic and each individual copes in their own way, even we have been bullied at some point in life. But, is bullying a taboo in schools? It is reason enough to end life?

Mental health advocate and speaker Aliçia Raimundo says, “Your bullying experience is valid even if you were never suicidal and your feelings of suicide are valid even if you were never bullied.”

Bullying does not directly cause suicide. Schools run campaigns, community centres and other communities help local schools in spreading awareness, serious actions are taken against those who have mistreated with someone causing them to get hurt, spiritually, mentally, and physically.

4. A Short ‘How to Suicide Guide’

 Hannah-Baker-Suicide

The final episode of 13 Reasons Why actually shows how Hannah Baker commits suicide. From wearing old clothes to getting in a running tub of water, till breathing her last couple of breaths, everything is shown on TV.

A child is literally shown how it goes about. The art of slitting wrists with stolen razors is portrayed in the most horrific ways that it becomes almost impossible to forget her last moments.

5. Give-up and Go Kill Yourself is NOT a Solution

Suicide is not the answer to every problem in life, my cat died, oh no, I should suicide! Oh no my chocolate fell on the floor, I need to die! Suicide is NEVER an option! If there is an ongoing problem like bullying, fat-shaming, boy/girls issues, or even harassment, you need to talk!

Tell an adult, your parents, tell a friend, tell someone, but let it out. Not talking is a crime in itself, you need to get everything out there, find different solutions, and work a way out, not end life because it’s easier than confronting, trust me, it is not, especially not for parents who have to go around explaining to people why their child end their life and they have no idea what drove them to do it.

6. Rapes are Not Meant to be Hush-Hush

There are 2 rapes in 13 Reasons Why Season 1, and in both situations, Hannah Baker is present, and decides to stay quiet about it. The first time, she witnesses her ex-friend get raped, she does not help, she does not tell, she remains silent, so does the boyfriend of the girl who gets raped, yes, he was aware.

Hannah wanders to the rich kid’s area, she apparently ends up being at the rapist’s house! Yes, even after knowing that he raped someone who was once close to her, she still ended up going to his party. She even finds herself in his hot tub (jacuzzi) and she actually jumps in.

When the rapist approaches her, taking advantage of her being alone, she does not ask for help, she does not make any noises, she hardly struggles to get herself out, not to forget she got herself into the mess.

Even days after this event, she decides not to talk to her parents, she does not confront the culprit. She remains quiet, and when she finally gets the courage to talk to the school counsellor, she denies to give up his name, to which the counsellor suggests its best move on, as she did not open state that he raped her, she does not even mention that he has raped another girl.

Hannah-Baker

Is crying the only solution to everything? Wouldn’t things be different if she would have slapped him in front of everyone, took it to a higher authority at high school, had her parents deal with his parents… If only these things were actually done and not just said.

7. Social Media & Technology Need to be Supervised

Hannah-Baker-Viral-Pic

Hannah’s first tape is about the boy who was her first kiss. He is also the boy who snapped an inappropriate picture of her, it went viral from his phone after one of his friends decided that everyone should see it, and he does absolutely nothing to slam the rumours about them being physical.

Thus, Hannah is labelled as many different things, even though nothing happened. Technology can be extremely savage, 13 Reasons Why only shows us the bad side of it, how to use it to spread fake news like wildfire, how to stalk people outside their homes with DSLR cameras, not how to blackmail and take advantage.

Why just the negatives? Why not how tech saves lives? or how it can be used to stop and prevent suicidal children from taking and making the decision to end their lives?

8. Ignorant Parents, Friends, and School Counsellor

Yes, of course, they were ignorant because you never told them what is wrong in your life in the first place! Until and unless you do not tell your family and close friends about what has gone wrong, how do you expect them to know? They do not wake up with a dream that there is something wrong with you! Speak!

Yes, it is hard, it is not easy to talk to others about being bullied, or when it comes to being harassed and even raped. However, it was clearly established that staying quiet does not help either. Do not think silence is the best answer, sharing is. You can always call helplines, talk to those who have survived such situations, but start at home!

9. Triggers Suicidal Tendencies

Suicidal thoughts and behaviours start when vulnerable individuals encounter stressful events. They become overwhelmed by the situation and decide, based on their faulty way of thinking, that suicide is the only reasonable way to stop the pain they are experiencing.

Determining what makes events stressful is difficult because of the everyone copes in different ways and has different perspectives. What may seem pretty meaningless to one person may seem devastating or unbearable to another. Those who are stressed due to bullying, being harassed, or because of relatable content from high school, and be one reason.

Me, being a student in a high school abroad, I can relate to most of the things on the show. One, yes, there are people who pull pranks, humiliate students, and make inappropriate comments, rumours and pictures go viral. Yes, there are bullies, bullying does exist, and no not just heavy-built or popular boys, even girls are bullies!

I agree parties and drinking are very common at the age of mere 16-17, however, there are events such as lost friendship, neglection, and other add-ons which build-up stress, leading to suicidal thoughts. The story through Clay’s character, the boy who is narrating events through the eyes of the victim, is so powerful and effective that it feels as if I am Clay, I knew Hannah, and I am also one of the reasons why she took her life.

10. Suicide Needs to be Discussed not Hidden in the Closet

hannah-baker-and-zach

Hannah Baker was a talented girl, she had a bright future, witty and charming. However, despite the fact she knew she was depressed, she knew she needed help, she blames others for not helping.

She blames Zach ( a friend of her rapist) for not helping her even though he knew she needed it. She blames Clay for leaving her alone the night she witnesses the rape and tells him that if he stayed things would have been different.

Instead of blaming, why not accept you too were at fault? You never spoke out loud, you never told others about what is going on, not to forget that you were the one who forced Clay to leave while he kept asking if he hurt you or if he did something wrong.

11. Graphic Depiction is Not Nessasary

The last four episodes are extremely intense. They do have explicit warnings at the beginning of each episode, but that isn’t enough.

Not only does it feature 2 rapes, bot acts are gritty, horrifying and not something your children need to actually witness just in case they need to deal with something like this. They did a good job of showing Hannah and how she felt during the rape (soulless look and expressions), but watching her body writhe with each “thrust” was completely unnecessary and not something we needed to watch in order to understand the gravity of the situation.

Hannah-Baker-Suicide

The suicide toward the end of the series literally displays how to kill yourself. She is seen stealing razors, and then actual cutting her wrists, the way she cried out and laid in the bathtub until she was gone. Why show a kid exactly how to do it?

12. Not Educational Enough for its Intended Audience

The story is about teenagers and school life – the ups and down, the fun, the dates, the attractions, the challenges, the jocks and suicides. Isn’t it great that it’s also aimed at that very audience? The most impressionable, and those that do experience suicidal thoughts due to pressure and immaturity.

According to The Mighty, not all who die by suicide have a mental illness, but a mental disorder and/or substance abuse is found in 90% of suicide deaths. And when it comes to adolescents, one in five have (or will have) a serious mental illness. With those statistics in mind, it’s no wonder suicide is the third leading cause of death among those 10 to 14 and the second among those 15 to 34 years old.

Clearly, these are important issues and ones that need to be addressed. “13 Reasons Why” is one of the first and most popular mainstream media portrayals of suicide in adolescence and it doesn’t talk about mental illness at all. It is missing a crucial opportunity to discuss an issue affecting the lives of so many children and teenagers.

13. Consequences can NOT be paid for after Damages have been Done

13-reasons-why-season-2

One thing 13 Reasons Why taught me was that Hannah’s suicide was pointless and did no good. She could have approached each individual personally without having to take the glory. Now that she is gone, people are paying the price for it, and at times, such as Sherri (character) knocks down a stop sign leading to the death of a teen and serious injuries to an old man.

She is then shown taking care of the old man and his wife, but is that really enough? For months the boy who died was presumed to be under alcoholic influence whereas he was completely sober just because he was bringing back beer to the party. Some damages cannot be repaired, like the trauma, Hannah’s parents are going through, the stress and emotions all characters, their families are going through. Most of all, the heaviness the viewer carries till the last second of the season.

13 Reasons Why is not appropriate for teenagers, not even young adults. Do not let your kids watch this series, it is not healthy for them, and can leave its influence on the child.

Wall’s new TVC Celebrates Mother’s Day with a Heartwarming Concept

Mother’s Day 2017 was quite interesting to watch. There were those people who went all out and celebrated the day making sure their mums had a great time. Then there were some who argued that we shouldn’t just be thoughtful on one day and proceeded to do nothing at all. A number of deals and discounts were introduced especially for Mother’s Day and many brands launched thought-provoking TVC to commemorate the occasion.

Walls was one such brand, with a unique TVC that compelled the audience to re-evaluate their daily lifestyle.

Watch the TVC below:

This is what the brand had to say “We are so caught up in our own lives that we forget to take out time for the ones who love us most- our mothers!” The heartwarming concept behind the ad is a reminder to us all. Often we get so busy with life that we forget to spend time with the one person who deserves it the most. Even after that, our mothers try to be a part of our lives, often trying to fit in by doing things we do.

The TVC is a story of one such mother who is constantly trying to be a part of her two children’s life. The kids being young adults have their own social life. The mother is always in her own way trying to join in the conversation. As a last resort, she joins in the social media website she sees her kids frequenting. She does what every parent has done after making an online account: send friend requests to her kids, tagging them in childhood pictures etc.

Initially, the kids feel embarrassed by all this, but soon they realize the actual reason why their mother felt the need to do this. Walls has always been a family-oriented brand. In the past too, they have come up with heartwarming TVCs that celebrate togetherness and loving families. This TVC too makes you shed a tear or two over the idea and makes you appreciate your mums a little bit more.

CNG Prices Spike 4 times Over 5 Months!

CNG prices have spiked 4 times in the last 5 months. Fuel prices have increased from Rs 74 to Rs 75 and in some areas of the city, it has increased from Rs 73 to Rs 74 per KG.

The government had set its price at Rs. 67.50 per KG before Dec 2016. However, the government increased CNG prices by Rs. 2.18 in mid-December.

There are many factors which add on to this problem, for example, the lack of digital meters. At times, CNG station employees work with stations which do not have digital meters and easily cheat consumers by robbing an extra 1-2 rupees per KG.

Chairman All Pakistan CNG Association Sindh, Shabbir Sulemanji said that the price of CNG across Karachi ranges from Rs. 73 to Rs. 75 under the current regime. He said that adding up the costs for gas, taxes and duties, the prices have increased from Rs. 55/Kg to Rs. 61/Kg over the last 3-4 months.

Another issue might be electricity. Electricity tariff is also the highest for CNG stations compared with other parts of the country, this adds on to the costs including power bill, labour charges, etc. Activists work to solve this issue with the government, however, it will take some time to resort.

Automotive Sales Drop in April by 12% in Pakistan

Pakistan-Car-Sales

Despite demand, the automotive sector saw a drop in sales in April by 12% compared to the previous month of March.

According to  Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA)’s report states that 3 automotive makers, combined, sold a total of 17,443 units throughout April. Pak Suzuki sold 9,171 whereas Indus Motor Company managed to sell 4,753 and lastly Honda Cars sold 3,519 units.

One of the reasons behind the low percentage of sales is limited production capacity of cars ( with also includes replacement of new car models) affected the sales numbers negatively in April.

According to analysts, old cars have started to phase out, new cars are being warmly welcomed by consumers whereas the demand for cars which are phasing out has started to die down.

According to ProPakistani, local automobile players have been witnessing production constraints vis-a-vis the increasing demand in the local market.

The gap in the supplies and demands are huge in the local market due to the limited production capacity of the three main players.

Additionally, customers are made to wait for months to get their cars unless they pay extra own money for getting them on time.

For the time being, sales will remain low.

Farewell Misbah & Younis, We Will MisYou!

MisYou

Cricket has changed, for good or for worse, Pakistani cricket, cricketers, and fans worldwide have bid farewell to two of the most amazing, talented men who didn’t just play cricket, but lived and breathed it.

It was indeed a heartstring-tugging moment when Misbah-ul-Haq, Pakistan cricket team’s most successful skipper, no doubt one of the most courageous one, walked onto the field to play his last innings.

Who better to bid him farewell with a smile and a warm hug than the man who has emerged as undeniably Pakistan’s greatest Test batsman, Younis Khan!

https://www.brandsynario.com/younis-khans-retirement-gift-has-made-every-pakistani-proud/

The moment is best described in the words of a die-hard fan of Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan, Jarrod Kimber;

“Misbah walks out slowly, you only see him from behind, fiddling with his helmet, and looking a bit stiff. I think about all those times he looked like the fittest guy in the team despite his age, but now he walks like he’s 42, and then he swaps his bat from one hand to the other as he sees someone walk towards him. It’s Younis, and the first time I saw this, before Younis had even come up to Misbah, I was welling up.

It was exactly as I would want to see it: Misbah, slow moving and closed off, looking a bit worse for wear, while Younis, gloves off, comes down the wicket with purpose, not caring much for the state of the game, to embrace his friend and put a fatherly hand around his shoulder. And that is it, the last bit. It’s what they have always done, and will never do again, forget the emotions and go about their business”

An athlete is often compared to death as a metaphor when they decide to retire. It is the process of life after death for them, a new life, new career, new view in making decisions, and this time it’s not the country which they think about it’s their families.

However, when talking about Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq, this metaphor does not apply, because no matter how many years go by and how many years go by, Pakistan will not produce another duo like ‘MisYou’. What is most commendable is that no matter what life threw at these titans, the duo did everything they could have possibly done to make every Pakistani proud.

“Whenever you think back, you think I’ve done this and that, you always have a feeling I could’ve done this a little better. I tried all that I could on my part, with whatever authority and responsibility I had, whatever was in my hands, I did what I could. I tried my level best with this team.”– Misbah-ul-Haq

From 2002-14, a black cloud had surrounded our Maximus, he witnessed the loss of 7 family members (and friends) and had reached a low point in life. They included his father, three siblings, an adolescent nephew, a brother whom he described as his first cricket coach, and a cricket coach he described as a father.

All these departings occurred while he was away on tour, and was exhausted. However, despite what happened in his personal life, he stayed professional and continued to strive to give everything he had with each stroke he took.

“Patience is very important. The other thing, for captaincy, is that the most difficult task, you go there and do it yourself. If you do, then automatically players get behind you and start playing their roles.”

“The most important thing, in any situation, is to have players who truly believe they can do it, players who believe that whatever the situation, whatever circumstances, they are the ones who can do it for the first time. That is the key thing to bring, that belief in a side – who are the players who will bring that belief into a side?” – Misbah-ul-Haq

MisYou

Thank you Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan, thank you for all those victories, thank you for all the memories, thank you for that precious hug, thank you for your dedication your patriotism and for your sacrifices.

We will MisYou!
