Pakistan Declares Three-Day Eid-ul-Fitr Holidays

According to a notification issued by the cabinet division on Wednesday, the Pakistan government has announced a three-day public holiday from March 31 to April 2 for Eid-ul-Fitr.

Eid-ul-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting. In Pakistan, Ramadan began on March 2, one day later than in most other Muslim countries. The festival is expected to be observed on March 31.

Pakistanโ€™s Ruet-e-Hilal Committee is responsible for moon sighting and officially confirming the date of Eid.

โ€œIt is notified that the Prime Minister has been pleased to declare public holidays (Monday to Wednesday) on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr,โ€ the notification from the cabinet division said.

Eid Al-Fitr is one of the two major Islamic festivals. The other, Eid-ul-Adha, involves the sacrifice of animals like sheep and goats. The meat is distributed among family, friends and those in need. This year, Eid-ul-Adha is expected to be observed on June 6 or 7, marking the end of the Hajj pilgrimage.
