President Asif Ali Zardari reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to building maritime cooperation in the Indian Ocean. He commented that to unlock the full economic and strategic potential of the ocean collective efforts are needed.
Speaking through a video link from the 3rd China-Indian Ocean Regional Forum on Blue Economy Cooperation, the president of Pakistan outlined some pressing issues like climate change, pollution of the world’s oceans and degradation of these ecosystems, which transcend country borders, and require addressing together by regional stakeholders.
Promoting Peace, Development, and Sustainability
Pakistan, he noted, envisions the Indian Ocean region as a symbol of peace, development, and sustainability. He believes that strengthening partnerships with neighbouring countries and key global players will enhance cooperation in the maritime sector, and lead to long-term regional prosperity.
Developing Gwadar Port, a flagship of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, is one of the critical aspects of Pakistan’s maritime vision. As President Zardari said it is fast turning into a hub of regional connectivity. Gwadar Port is expected to not only add muscle to trade routes for Pakistan but will also fuel growth in the maritime economy in the entire region.

The President also mentioned the increasing worldwide power of Eastern economies, most notably in Asia.
