Fakhar Zaman emphasized the importance of a wake-up call for the national team ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, slated to take place in the West Indies and the USA next month.
Reflecting on Pakistan’s shock loss in the first T20I against Ireland, Fakhar acknowledged the necessity of the defeat as a wake-up call for the team.
He highlighted how the disappointment fueled every player’s determination to bounce back stronger in the subsequent fixture.
“We needed a wake-up call considering the way we lost the first game. So it was in the back of our minds while we were playing the second game and that is why everyone was giving their best,” Fakhar said in a candid video released by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Digital.
With eyes set on the T20 World Cup, Fakhar Zaman emphasized the significance of maintaining the momentum gained from the second T20I victory. He expressed optimism about carrying the same energy and commitment into the global tournament.
Facing a daunting chase of 194 runs in the second T20I, Pakistan encountered early setbacks with the loss of key wickets. However, Fakhar Zaman’s partnership with Mohammad Rizwan turned the tide in Pakistan’s favour.
Fakhar’s blistering knock of 78 runs off 40 balls, complemented by Rizwan’s unbeaten 75, propelled Pakistan towards victory. Their aggressive approach and calculated strategy defied the early pressure, showcasing the team’s resilience and determination.
Fakhar revealed Pakistan’s game plan to counterattack despite the early setbacks. Their aggressive intent aimed to alleviate pressure and chase down the target swiftly, ultimately leading to a convincing win.
“Our plan was to counterattack despite losing two wickets early. There is pressure when you lose early wickets, but since we have planned to play attacking cricket, it releases all pressure,” Fakhar told PCB Digital.
With the series leveled at 1-1, all eyes are on the third and decisive T20I clash between Pakistan and Ireland. The outcome of this match will not only determine the series winner but also serve as a crucial stepping stone for Pakistan’s T20 World Cup campaign.
