Pakistan’s Olympic javelin champion Arshad Nadeem has formally declined an invitation to compete in the Neeraj Chopra Classic, a big-ticket one-day athletics meet that will be held in Bengaluru on May 24. Though the reason for the rejection was cited largely on grounds of clash of schedules, it also comes in the context of heightened political tensions between India and Pakistan following a recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
Scheduling Conflicts and Prior Commitments
Arshad clarified that his withdrawal was due to his existing training commitments and his upcoming participation in the Asian Athletics Championships in Korea. “The Classic event is on May 24, but I’m scheduled to depart for Korea on May 22,” Nadeem explained, emphasising that the clash was unavoidable. He is currently busy getting ready for the World Athletics Championship in Tokyo in September and is set to go back to his training headquarters in Pakistan shortly.
While Nadeem insisted his move was sporting in nature, the affair is clouded by political undertones. The Pahalgam terror strike has set the diplomatic tensions between the two countries abuzz, and sources indicate that this might have played on Nadeem’s mind. His involvement would have needed approval from the Pakistan government, and there were fears the heightened tensions would delay or invalidate his travel permits—or even worse, have his invite withdrawn by Indian authorities.
