A UK court will hear the appeals of Urfan Sharif and Beinash Batool, who were jailed for life for murdering 10-year-old Sara Sharif. The trial revealed horrific abuse, with Sara suffering broken bones, burns and beatings with a metal pole. The judge described the cruelty as extreme and noted that neither parent showed “a shred of remorse.”
Saraโs father received a 40-year sentence, while her stepmother was sentenced to at least 33 years. Faisal Malik, her uncle, was given 16 years for causing or allowing her death. The Solicitor General, Lucy Rigby, is also appealing the fatherโs sentence, arguing it was โunduly lenient.โ

The abuse went unnoticed by social services, despite Saraโs school raising concerns multiple times. She was withdrawn from school four months before her death. The court heard she was forced to wear a hijab to cover her injuries. The case led to new government rules on home-schooling.
After Saraโs death, the three adults fled to Pakistan, leaving behind a note claiming no intention to kill her. They returned to the UK after a month and were arrested. Saraโs body was repatriated to Poland, where her mother arranged her funeral.
