pcbs-new-selection-committee-will-it-work-this-time-pcb-chairman-mohsin-naqvi-turns-to-ai-for-cricket-surgery

Once again, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to shake things up in the selection committee. The seven-member committee has been trimmed down to just five. But that’s not the real game-changer here.

Whatโ€™s caught everyoneโ€™s attention is the fact that the captain and head coach no longer have voting rights when it comes to picking the playing eleven.

The new selectorsโ€”Aaqib Javed, Aleem Dar, Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq, and Hassan Cheemaโ€”now hold all the cards. They’re the ones calling the shots on who makes it into the final XI.

While theyโ€™ll still talk to the captain and coach, these discussions are purely advisory. The power of decision-making lies solely with the selectors.

Why the Drastic Change?

The PCB seems to be looking for clarity and control, especially after the disappointing performance in the first Test at Multan. Pakistan faced a heavy defeat by an innings and 47 runs, and it looks like the PCB isnโ€™t willing to take any more chances.

In response, they swiftly brought in some fresh faces like Aaqib Javed, Aleem Dar, and Azhar Ali as selectors, hoping to turn the tide. The PCB wants a committee that has the full authority to pick players without too many voices in the mix.

This new structure is meant to avoid confusion and give responsibility solely to the selectors. However, the decision has raised eyebrows, especially considering the lack of direct input from the captain and coach in final selections.

A Web of Changes

Interestingly, the PCB has been tweaking its selection structure on the fly. When they initially updated their website, the selectors were joined by a few non-voting members, including assistant coach Azhar Mahmood, chairman advisor Bilal Afzal, and some others. But just two hours later, the website was updated again.

This time, the captain and head coach were removed entirely from the decision-making process. Now, the selection committee alone has the final say.

This constant back-and-forth shows how fluid the situation has been behind the scenes. A PCB official confirmed that the current setup is now final.
