In a country where cricket often overshadows everything else, footballers like Muhammad Riaz struggle to find the recognition they deserve.
Riaz, once a national hero who represented Pakistan at the Asian Games, was forced to sell jalebis at a roadside stall to make ends meet after his departmental team was disbanded. His story recently surfaced online, drawing attention to the harsh reality many footballers in Pakistan face.
But now, there’s finally some good news.
The Pakistan Football League (PFL) has stepped in, announcing a cash prize of PKR 1 million for Riaz and offering him a key role in the league. This move is part of PFLโs broader mission to revive football in Pakistan and support struggling players.

A Struggle That Shouldnโt Have Happened
Riazโs downfall wasnโt due to a lack of talent or poor performance. It was simply because Pakistanโs departmental sports system was suspended, leaving many athletes jobless overnight.
With no steady income, he had no choice but to set up a stall in Hangu, making and selling jalebisโa heartbreaking sight for someone who once played on the international stage.
His story quickly gained attention, leading to an invitation to the Prime Minister House and, eventually, PFLโs generous support.
PFL Steps Up for Pakistanโs Footballers
PFL Chairman Farhan Junejo acknowledged that Riazโs situation is not unique. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of talented footballers in Pakistan who have been forced out of the game due to financial struggles.
“Muhammad Riaz is a prime example of the immense talent Pakistan has, which often goes unnoticed due to the lack of platforms and support. We at PFL are committed to changing that.”
Junejoโs words reflect PFLโs bigger goalโensuring that no footballer has to quit the game just to survive. Along with the cash prize, Riaz has been guaranteed a prominent position within PFL, allowing him to return to the sport he loves.

“I Wonโt Let Another Player Be Neglected” โ Muhammad Riaz
Grateful for the support, Riaz promised to work with PFL to prevent other players from suffering the same fate.
“I am thankful to PFL for giving me a chance to revive my football career. I will make sure no other player is neglected the way I was.”
To further promote football, PFL has also announced free kits and training facilities for underprivileged players in Hangu. This initiative aims to support young footballers and give them a chance to pursue their dreams without financial barriers.
