Stargazers are in for a treat this Saturday. This weekend a celestial spectacle will be visiting. Yes, April’s full moon — known as the Pink Moon will rise in near-perfect alignment with sunset.
What Is the Pink Moon?
First things first—no, the Pink Moon isn’t actually pink in color.
The term “Pink Moon” comes from Native American and colonial traditions, which often named full moons after natural events occurring around the same time. April’s full moon is called the Pink Moon because it coincides with the early spring bloom of the wild ground phlox, a vibrant pink flower that blankets fields in the northern hemisphere.
The Pink Moon is also known by other names, such as the Sprouting Grass Moon, Egg Moon, and Fish Moon—all signs of spring’s arrival.
Pink Moon Rise Time
According to NASA, the full moon will reach peak illumination at 8:22 pm EDT on Saturday, April 12, and it will be at its farthest point from Earth — about 251,000 miles (404,500 kilometers) away. Because of this distance, the moon will appear about 14% smaller and 30% dimmer than a typical supermoon, although the size difference is subtle to the naked eye.
For viewers in parts of Central and South America, as well as southern Africa, the moon will briefly pass in front of the bright star Spica, in an event known as an occultation.
Viewing the Pink Moon in Pakistan
In Pakistan, the Pink Moon will be visible on Sunday, April 13, with moonrise occurring at approximately 9:08 p.m. UTC in Karachi. The full moon will be visible throughout the night, rising in the east at sunset and setting in the west at sunrise.

Here’s a breakdown of moonrise times for major cities:
- Karachi: Moonrise around 9:08 PM PKT on April 12
- Lahore: Moonrise around 8:45 PM PKT
- Islamabad: Moonrise around 8:50 PM PKT
- Peshawar: Moonrise around 8:55 PM PKT

This full moon is also significant for its connection to Easter in Pakistan. It is the “Paschal Moon” which will determine the date of Easter Sunday.

Importance of the Pink Moon
Apart from the “aesthetic” purposes, the Pink Moon has cultural and astrological significance. The moon symbolizes renewal, growth and change. This aligns perfectly with the energy of spring. For many, it’s also a moment to slow down and connect with nature, whether through meditation, journaling, or simply watching the night sky in silence.
