Pokémon TCG Pocket is a collectable card game that brings the classic franchise to mobile. Developed by The Pokémon Company, it allows players to open digital booster packs and battle online, mimicking the experience of the physical card game. This app has not only revived the Pokémon brand but also increased sales of physical cards. As Frederique Tutt, a toy market expert at Circana, says, “Physical cards remain the brand’s heart; something collectors want to own for playing and trading.”

Released in 2016, Pokémon Go became a global sensation, earning over $200 million in its first month and encouraging millions to go outdoors to catch virtual creatures. Now, Pokémon TCG Pocket taps into that same enthusiasm, while boosting interest in physical cards.

The game’s design mirrors the experience of opening physical card packs, which has contributed to its success. Simon Carless, founder of GameDiscoverCo, explains, “It’s a very unchanged experience compared to the physical card game—which was smart, and that’s why people love it.” Fans are sharing their excitement on social media, with the hashtag #PokemonTCG generating over 1.5 million posts on TikTok.

The game is free to download, but in-app purchases encourage players to collect more cards and continue their journey. The success of Pokémon TCG Pocket shows the ongoing appeal of collectable card games, both digitally and physically.
