Mercedes-Benz presented Pope Francis with a completely electric Popemobile on Wednesday. Based on the Mercedes G-Class model, the specially designed car has an elevated seat beneath a glass canopy so the pope can welcome guests. The Popemobile, is painted pearl white and has an electric motor that is specifically made for slow papal processions. Ola Kallenius, the CEO of Mercedes-Benz and project engineers unveiled the car in the Vatican, calling the production “a special honour for our company.”

This vehicle continues a 45-year tradition of Mercedes-Benz supplying Popemobiles to the Vatican. It reflects Pope Francis’ environmental advocacy, particularly highlighted in his 2015 encyclical Laudato Si, where he urged global climate action. The pontiff reiterated these concerns in 2023, expressing disappointment in slow progress.
