Dr Ruth KM Pfau Civil Hospital, the largest teaching hospital in Sindh, has been without electricity in key areas since Tuesday. The power outage has severely impacted the operation theatre, orthopaedic, medical and surgical units. This has forced the hospital to rely on two large generators to keep critical services running. Over the past 24 hours, the hospital has used around 1,500 litres of diesel, costing over Rs300,000 to maintain the power supply.

The power problem stems from a faulty PMT (Pole-Mounted Transformer), which has been malfunctioning for a while. Despite multiple requests for its replacement, no action has been taken. The technical issues with the PMT cause daily power disruptions, endangering patients, especially during surgeries. While the generators are keeping the power on, they come with added costs. The hospital administration has assured that patient care has not been interrupted, but the ongoing power failures remain a serious concern.
