President Grants Remission to Prisoners for Pakistan Day and Eid

On the occasion of Pakistan Day and Eid ul Fitr, President Asif Ali Zardari has announced a 180-day special remission in sentences for certain prisoners.

This remission is granted under Article 45 of the Constitution but it will not apply to those prisoners who are convicted of serious crimes. Offenses labeled serious by the Pakistani Law include murder, espionage, anti-state activities, rape, theft, robbery, kidnapping, terrorism, financial crimes or any offenses causing losses to the national treasury. It also excludes violations and crimes under the Foreigners Act, 1946 and the Control of Narcotic Substances (Amendment) Act, 2022.

The remission will primarily benefit male prisoners aged 65 and above and those who have served one-third of their sentence. The criteria for females is also the same, i.e female prisoners aged 60 or above, and those who have served at least one-third of their sentence are eligible for this remission.

Besides from the general criteria set. Women prisoners who are with children and young new offenders under 18 who have completed one-third of their sentence will also be eligible.

Eid ul Fitr Holidays Announced by Government

In other news, the federal government has declared official public holidays for Eid ul Fitr from 31st March to 2nd April. This was confirmed by a notification from the Cabinet Secretariat confirming the Prime minister Shehbaz Sharif’s approval of these dates.

The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will meet after maghrib, on the evening of 30 March 2025 (Ramazan 29) to sight the Shawwal moon for Eid ul Fitr. Religious scholars, meteorological experts and the committe gathered will then assess reports from across the country (Eid ke Chand ki Shahdaten) to confirm the date of Eid ul Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan and the start of Eid Celebration.
