Thousands of protesters in Bangladesh set fire to the home of the country’s founding leader, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, on Wednesday. The incident took place as Sheikh Hasina, his daughter and former prime minister, delivered a speech online, calling on her supporters to stand against the interim government.
According to witnesses, several thousand demonstrators, some armed with sticks, hammers and tools, gathered at the historic house and independence monument. Protesters even brought a crane and excavator to demolish the building. The demonstration was part of a broader movement called “Bulldozer Procession,” organised to disrupt Hasina’s scheduled speech.

Tensions in Bangladesh have been rising since August 2024, when mass protests forced Hasina to flee to India. The interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has struggled to maintain order as unrest continues. Protesters have targeted symbols of Hasina’s government, including Sheikh Mujib’s house, which was first set on fire in August.
In her speech, Hasina accused the interim government of seizing power unconstitutionally. She declared, “They can demolish a building, but not the history. History takes its revenge.” Meanwhile, student-led groups behind the protests have expressed their intent to dismantle the 1972 Constitution, which they claim upholds the legacy of Hasina’s father.
