Punjab has recently announced a MEGA cash program for underprivileged women seeking marriage. The mass wedding program offers $350 in cash for miscellaneous wedding costs, clothes, furniture, and dinner sets. These items are often expected from a girl to bring with her. Marriages are one of the most costly expenses when it comes to having a child in Pakistan, especially a daughter; with whom you have to send furniture and whatnot.
Punjab’s Mass Wedding Fund
Given the crisis was resulting in bankruptcy, these fancy dinners and clothes were draining a lifetime of savings, so Punjab announced its program. The government of eastern Pakistan approved its largest mass marriage program for up to 3,000 low-income women. This has been reported by the state broadcaster this week.
In the religious context, marriages are supposed to be within income budget, and not too extravagant. Regardless, due to a social-media enthusiast world, marriages have become an extravagant affair in everyone’s lives. Putting an insane amount of financial burden on families that come from lower-income backgrounds.
The traditions often include hosting a large group of people for dinner, luxury bridal clothes, and heavy jewelry. Moreover, the family of the girl is also expected to pay for expensive gifts for the groom’s family, furniture for the bride’s new room, and more. As per local customs, the bride’s male relatives are also often expected to pay a dowry to the groom’s family.
The Program
“The Punjab Cabinet has approved the province’s largest historical mass marriage program,” Radio Pakistan said on Tuesday. CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif also directed authorities to plan the expansion of this program. Yet, no details have been announced further.
Though the program offers incredible financial relief, it seems unusual to spend an extensive amount on marriages while the country suffers from high rates of illiteracy.
