On the night between March 13 and 14, 2025, a rare celestial event will occur: a total lunar eclipse will turn the moon into a striking shade of red, also known as ”blood moon.” If you live in North or South America, you will have the best view of the eclipse. Sky watchers in Europe, parts of Africa, and Oceania will also see some of it.
North and South America will be the prime locations to witness all five phases of the eclipse. The Western United States and parts of Canada will have an advantage due to clearer skies in March. In Europe, parts of the eclipse will be visible during moonset, while East Asia and Australia will see the moonโs phases as it rises. The eclipse will last for a total of five to six hours, with totalityโwhen the moon is entirely in Earthโs shadowโlasting approximately 65 minutes. The peak of the eclipse will be between 2:26 a.m. and 3:31 a.m. Eastern Time.

Why does the Moon Turn Red?
During this period, the moon will glow in shades of red and orange. The Earth will be positioned between the sun and the moon, blocking most sunlight but allowing some to pass through Earth’s atmosphere. Shorter wavelengths like blue and violet scatter, while longer wavelengthsโred and orange, reach the moon, creating the blood moon effect. The exact shade of red depends on Earth’s atmospheric conditions at the time. Volcanic eruptions can deepen the red hue, while clear skies may result in a lighter red.
No special glasses are required to watch the eclipse. It is safe to view with the naked eye, but a telescope or binoculars will enhance the experience. To get the best view, it is recommended to find a location free from artificial light. The 2025 blood moon will be the first total lunar eclipse since 2022.
