England wicket-keeper Sam Billings, who represents Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), made headlines recently with a provocative statement made at a press interaction in Karachi. When prompted by a Pakistani journalist to contrast the PSL with the Indian Premier League (IPL), Billings didn’t hesitate. Unflinchingly, he anointed the IPL as the finest T20 league in the world — a statement that left the Pakistani media room aghast in silence.
“It’s Hard to Look Past the IPL”
“Want me to say something daft?” Billings laughed, playing along with the suggestive tone of the question before going on. “It’s difficult to look beyond the IPL as the best competition in the world — it’s common knowledge. Every other competition pales into second place.”

This remark, if unvarnished, was a shot in the dark with some Pakistani fans, who are intensely patriotic about their domestic league. The PSL has improved over the last ten years, having excellent bowling attacks and uncovering local talent. But Billings’ honesty exposed a nasty reality: when it comes to international viewership, name recognition, and bank balance, the IPL is still unmatched.
PSL’s Growing Reputation — But Still a Gap
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time a Pakistani journalist has tried to stir India into the conversation. Just days earlier, David Warner — captain of the Karachi Kings — was asked if he felt any backlash from Indian fans for joining the PSL after going unsold in the IPL auction. Warner shrugged off the suggestion, saying, “This is the first I’ve heard of it. I just want to play cricket. There was finally an opportunity for me to come to the PSL, and I’m excited.”
The reality is, for many international players, the PSL provides a competitive and passionate cricketing environment — but it’s still viewed as a step below the IPL in terms of commercial appeal. Billings’ remark may sting, but it reflects the global perception.

All that being said, the PSL keeps growing. Comparisons with the IPL are inevitable, perhaps, but maybe it’s time for the league — and its supporters — to concentrate on what sets the PSL apart from constantly looking for validation through comparison. I mean, trying to catch a larger shadow doesn’t necessarily make you shine any brighter.
