Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has raised eyebrows over the omission of all-rounder Aamir Jamal from the national T20I squad for the upcoming series against Ireland and England.
As the Pakistan team gears up for a series of matches in Ireland followed by England, Afridi expressed his surprise during a press interaction in Karachi. He highlighted the absence of Mohammad Wasim Jr. and Aamir Jamal from the squad, despite their previous contributions.
“It’s surprising to see Mohammad Wasim Jr. being dropped after being in the team for a significant period,” Afridi remarked, questioning the selection decisions made by the team management.
He further emphasized the significance of Jamal, drawing comparisons to the legendary Abdul Razzaq. Afridi expressed bewilderment at Jamal’s exclusion, citing his potential as a valuable all-rounder for the team.
“After Abdul Razzaq, we saw a good all-rounder in Aamir Jamal, it’s surprising he wasn’t retained,” Shahid Afridi stated.
“A good captain takes important decisions in difficult times. We want Babar to become a great captain as much as he is a great player,” Afridi asserted, emphasizing the pivotal role of captaincy in achieving success in the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Afridi’s comments were in response to Babar’s explanation behind the exclusion of Jamal from the T20I squad format. Babar stated that the all-rounder needs to gain more experience and exposure in order to refine his skills for the fast-paced T20 format.
“Aamir Jamal performed admirably in Test cricket, but Test performance cannot be directly compared to T20s,” Babar stated. “In T20 cricket, we require a genuine hitter in the position where Jamal bats. He needs more time and matches to further polish his game for the T20 format.”
