Shanghai Man Scammed of $28,000 by AI ‘Girlfriend’

On Wednesday, a man from Shanghai lost nearly $28,000 after being tricked into a long-distance “relationship” with an AI-generated girlfriend, Chinese state media reported.

“Ms Jiao,” a fictional woman, created by artificial intelligence (AI) software using realistic videos and still images, was used to scam the man. He later transferred 200,000 yuan (nearly $28,000) to his “lover’s” bank account.

The scammers not only created a fake ID of the said woman but also medical records to make the victim believe that she needed funds for medical reasons.

“Throughout the process, (the victim) Mr Liu never met Ms Jiao in person,” stated State Broadcaster CCTV.
