The opening ceremony of the ICC Champions Trophy in Karachi tomorrow will feature a spectacular aerobatic display by the Pakistan Air Force’s renowned Sherdil Squadron. The tournament is set to kick off with the Pakistan-New Zealand match on February 19. The ceremony is set to add colour and excitement to the occasion, with the Sherdil Squadron taking to the skies after a five-year hiatus.
The Sherdil Squadron, meaning ‘lion-hearted’ in Urdu, will showcase complex manoeuvres using Karakoram-8 aircraft. These demonstrations will include barrel rolls, loops, bomb bursts and the release of coloured smoke. The PAF’s JF-17 Thunder and F-16 fighter jets will also be part of the breathtaking display.

Founded on September 19, 1974, the Sherdil Squadron is internationally acclaimed for its performances at airshows, including those in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Notably, in 2020, the squadron also demonstrated its aerobatic skills over Karachi’s Sea View beach, celebrating the downing of an Indian jet.
The Karakoram-8-8, a Pakistan-made advanced trainer aircraft, is used for basic and operational jet training at the PAF Academy in Risalpur. The aircraft is equipped with the ability to carry weapons on its four hard points and a ballistic gun pod, adding to its impressive capabilities during the aerobatic display.
