You know something must be quite off about a deal when a giant like Sony has cancelled it. Yes, Sony’s Indian division has abandoned a proposed $10 billion merger with Zee Entertainment, which would have created one of India’s largest entertainment conglomerates. This news comes as quite a surprise, especially because Zee Entertainment has had an impressive track record over the years, creating quite a lot of content.

The merger, initially revealed two years ago, aimed to unite over 75 television channels, film assets, and two streaming platforms under a single entity. This meant that all the data and media was going to be integrated onto a single platform. Not only would this have made the regulation of each media channel easier, but it would have created a universal network.

Sony Cancelling Merger

Sony cited unmet merger conditions as the reason for the termination, while reports suggest a leadership dispute may have played a role. They say that the conditions of the merger were not met, but there might be something greater at play here. It is possible that there has been some form of dispute among the leadership running both the ships. It is not uncommon to have mergers cancelled because of massive disputes meeting no ends.

Zee Entertainment responded by stating it might pursue legal action against Sony and contested allegations of breaches of the merger terms. Now, one side is blaming the other and it can be seen on both ends. So, which is the truth? Who is the one telling the truth and what exactly is this dispute? It certainly puts a dent in the credibility of both Sony and Zee Entertainment.

The Media Industry

The deal’s closing date of January 20 was missed, and disagreements emerged over Zee’s CEO Punit Goenka’s leadership role, especially following a regulatory probe. The collapse of the deal is seen as detrimental to both parties’ plans to compete in India’s growing digital market amid increasing competition from platforms like Netflix, Amazon, and Hotstar.

It would be good for a company like Zee Entertainment, to make a mark where Netflix currently resides.
